Did you know? Civic Arts Education of Walnut Creek is the largest community arts education program in Northern California. Each quarter over 130 classes, workshops and programs are offered, with over 7000 participants from pre-schoolers to senior adults. Fine arts, music, dance and theater programs are facilitated by professional artists and instructors. Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation, is a non-proÀt organization dedicated to ensuring everyone in Contra Costa county has access to arts learning regardless of the ability to pay. This past year over 100 scholarships were awarded to grateful students.
Why you should be a FRIEND OF THE ARTS • Are you one of the thousands of Contra Costa and Bay Area residents who have enjoyed participating in the many arts classes offered by Civic Arts Education? • Are you an active supporter of the arts who believes that arts education shapes every stage of life and helps communities and economies to thrive? “It’s loads of fun!” “I’ve made a lot of new friends!” Jillian Fenty and Matthew Pollock are two lucky teenagers excited to be participating in Civic Arts Education’s Junior and Teen Theater yearlong programs with Friends Foundation sponsored scholarships. Matthew, a seventh grader at Foothill Middle School, has just begun his third year with Junior Theatre, a Civic Arts Education advanced group of young performers that produces two large-scale productions a year. His Àrst role was that of Tweedle-Dumb in a production of Alice in Wonderland, but Matthew’s favorite, he says, was playing the role of a roving reporter in True Stories. Besides meeting new people, he loves the energy that comes from being part of the theater group. Matthew has also participated in By the Kids, For the Kids for the past two years. This student produced and directed charity event, which just took place on October 2, beneÀts the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation scholarship fund and the Monument Crisis Center. Matthew is a 7th grader at Foothill Middle School where he has the opportunity to continue working on his techniques in school-run Improv and Drama classes. Jillian, a freshman at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, only became involved in theater about a year ago. “My mom’s a singing and voice instructor, so I learned to sing when I was young and started performing in theater when I was 7.” Her older sister’s long involvement with the Civic Arts Education Youth Theater programs convinced Jillian to give it a try herself although she was reluctant at Àrst. “I was nervous about not knowing anyone, but my family Ànally talked me into signing up for the summer theater classes in 2010. I made lots of friends and found out how much fun it was!” She went on to join Teen Theatre, Civic Art’s more advanced program that works on the Àner skills of dance, vocals, character development and production and produces two musical events a year. Jillian was excited to be able to travel with the group to Atlanta last spring for the Junior Theater Festival. At school she is Ànding other activities to engage her interest and is currently taking Yearbook and Spanish electives. To Ànd out how you can ensure all kids in Contra Costa County have access to arts learning regardless of their Ànancial circumstances, consider supporting the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation. You can attend our annual fundraiser, ¡Viva Arts! on February 3, 2012, buy rafÁe tickets (where you do not need to be present to win) and/or make a monetary donation to the Friends Foundation. For more information, call 925-939-2787 or visit www.friendsartsed.org.
Meet the Friends Foundation’s Newest Board Member: Suzanne Masella Supporting the arts in Walnut Creek is not new to Suzanne Masella. As a Walnut Creek Arts Commissioner, a position she has held since 2007, Suzanne has approved large public arts projects, served as a liaison to the Lesher Center for the Performing Arts, consulted with the Bedford Gallery, and has volunteered with the Civic Arts Education Youth and Teen Theatre. She also was a founding member of the Walnut Creek Film Festival and served on the Library Opening Committee. Suzanne and her husband moved to Walnut Creek from Oakland 13 years ago and says that “Walnut Creek combines the serenity of the country with the edgy urban experience, reminiscent of my hometown, Brooklyn.” An east coast transplant, she moved to the Bay Area in 1975 to pursue an active career in real estate and is currently a full time residential broker associate with Better Homes & Gardens Mason McDufÀe. “You will never Ànd me without a book, and sometimes 2 or 3, at arms reach,” she admits. “When I am not at home reading, cooking or listening to KFOG, I am out and about in our wonderful city.” Besides testing every restaurant in town, she is a Jeopardy contender, Trivia night team member and daily crossword puzzler. “I have a passion for movies, theatre, ballet, baseball games and love to dance to live music, at small local clubs or large arenas.” Suzanne has sat on the Friends Foundation board for over a year, serving as an Arts Commissioner liaison. “I decided that it was time to become an active board member so I can be more involved with all its wonderful projects.”
