Master Potter Workshop: A Day with Akio Takamori Using the coil building method, Akio will demonstrate the construction of a sleeping figure. This method allows him to modify the figure into the hollow constructed form. He will finish the figure with surface painting using under glazes. The economy of the simplified coil built form allows him to add information by drawing and painting on the surface. Following his tastes and favorite blue and white functional ceramics from the past, he will also demonstrate the making of press mold ware with under glaze drawings loosely based on pictorial images and forms of historical ware seen in museums. Pottery Making for Raku Firing (Int/Adv) Raku is a low-firing process. Preheated ware is put into a hot kiln with tongs, then withdrawn and usually heavily smoked. First

Best of the Best Awarded! There is enormous talent in the CAE program, that we know for sure! To celebrate, the Friends of CAE Foundation has awarded excellence in music through the Kathy Nelson Merit Scholar Awards. “The most successful musicians often reflect on the support, encouragement, and mentoring they received when they were learning and improving.” says Michael Weiner, Friends Foundation President. “We want to join in on that process in supporting these students”.

CIVIC ARTS: A Truly Valuable Asset to Our Community For almost 50 years the Civic Arts Education program has been the center of excellence for arts education. The arts education classes offered in this catalogue distinguish Walnut Creek from other communities and build a tremendous sense of community among the area residents.
Did You Know? • CAE runs over 680 classes, workshops and programs in visual and performing arts annually
• Approximately 7,000 students of all ages attend classes over the year • Over 200 volunteers spend over 45,000 hours a year supporting CAE’s programs
• Over 64 performances, concerts, and events are held at Shadelands, Del Valle Theatre and other venues
• Approximately 175 part-time seasonal jobs are created for instructors, artists, teenagers, etc. Recently, the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team (ACT) reviewed CAE’s function and its value as a part of the greater community. They reported CAE is a high quality, worthwhile and unique program. It helps fulfill Walnut Creek ’s significant commitment to the Arts and greatly benefits young people in the community. An evaluation of the student may take place the first – third day of a session. Instructors reserve the right to replace your child if needed. Spaces cannot be “held”. Aquatics Refunds Refunds are allowed up to seven business days prior to the first day of class; a $10 service fee per class will be applied to each refund. Students must be able to swim front and back crawl 15 yards, do 20 bobs, glide underwater, and tread water for at least 45 seconds. Class objective: continue with front and back crawl refinement, treading water, diving, and introduction of breaststroke and scissor kick.
