Welcome

Welcome to Mystic, Connecticut, circa 1988. Based on the iconic movie, this musical sweeps us back in time to experience the unique relationship between three young women as they negotiate their place in the world and discover their future. The bond they share is both deeply personal and one for the ages. It’s a relationship that we find incredibly inspiring and moving, and we hope you do too.

We’re also extremely inspired by the unique relationship we’ve embarked upon with McCoy Rigby Entertainment, Lively McCabe Entertainment, and Riverside

Theatricals, in bringing MYSTIC PIZZA to life on the West Coast.

This joyous musical started out its

life down at La Mirada Performing Arts Center in Long Beach before moving up here, and next it moves on to Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom. Partnerships such as these are the future for our industry, and we are thrilled and grateful for their collaboration.

Thank you for joining us today! If you like what you see, please help us spread the word about what we’re up to at Center REP. You, and what you tell your community, is our very best press.

Mystic Pizza is presented by Center REP in partnership with La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts & McCoy Rigby Entertainment. Playwright Sandy Rustin shared her thoughts with BT McNicholl, Producing Artistic Director of La Mirada Theatre, about the creation of Mystic Pizza.

BT: What drew you to the source material? Had you seen the film before you were approached to adapt it?

SANDY RUSTIN (Writer): I loved Mystic Pizza when I saw it as a teenager. I loved the juxtaposition of grit and vulnerability in Daisy, Kat, and Jo. Their sisterhood and friendship felt important and admirable and aspirational. When the opportunity to adapt the film for the stage came to me, I jumped at the chance to dive into the hearts and

minds of these three young women. I feel so lucky to have been given the chance to reexamine this story through a more contemporary lens - to ask, what more do these women want beyond the men in their lives? To settle into the nostalgia of the piece while celebrating a decidedly feminist angle has been a joy.

BT: Tell us about the song score. How did you go about deciding which songs should be used to further the story?

SANDY: The score of Mystic Pizza is a thrill! It’s the soundtrack of my teenage years and I am still pinching myself that we’ve been able to build a show that highlights such evergreen hits! In creating a jukebox musical, I first have to create the script - without any music at all. Understanding the story - the play itself - allows me to see a) where songs belong and b) what the songs need to

accomplish to help tell the story. For Mystic Pizza, knowing the genre we were building our world in helped to narrow down which songs we had to choose from, and from there it was a matter of defining the required tone, style, and lyric for each musical moment - and then praying that we could get the rights to the song that matched each moment best! This score reflects a “perfect - match” for every momenthow amazing!

BT: Did you feel that you identified with any one of the characters in particular, or did you find yourself connecting to different aspects of these three leading characters?

SANDY: I can never choose any one character in my plays to love the most! I love them all! And certainly, that is true in Mystic Pizza. There is always a part of me in every character

I write - and in Daisy, Kat, and Jo, my teenage self bubbles up within all three. I identify with Kat’s ambition, with Daisy’s wanderlust, and with Jo’s desire to “have it all.” These young women look at the years ahead of them as an opportunity for triumph and self - discovery, for love and success. I love that about them.

BT: What do you hope the audience takes away from seeing Mystic Pizza?

SANDY: Well, first and foremost, I hope our audiences have FUN. This show is designed to have people dancing in their seats! But more than that, I hope audiences walk away having absorbed the power of close female friendship. The young women in Mystic Pizza support each other - unconditionally. They’re there for each other when things go south, and they celebrate with each other when things feel joyful.

So often in storytelling, we see female friendship defined by petty jealousy or vicious gossip. In Mystic Pizza, friendship is the key to their happiness. What a great message for audiences of all ages to walk away with.

BT: Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

SANDY: One of the best parts about developing Mystic Pizza has been working with Casey Hushion (Director) and Carmel Dean (Musical Arranger). Our creative, collaborative trio has become our own Daisy, Kat & Joand that has been a true gift. For the three of us to be able to craft a musical about three strong, funny, passionate, empathetic, ambitious, loving young women has been a total delight.

BT: Thank you, Sandy, and here’s to a bright future for this brand-new musical!
