Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS ARE A MEASURE OF ACHIEVEMENT AND THEY SHOW THAT YOU HAVE MASTERED PARTICULAR SKILLS AND GAINED SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF A SUBJECT. THEY ALSO PROVIDE A PROGRESSION ROUTE TO FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS. STUDENT WRITER, MELISSA SNOW TELLS YOU ABOUT THESE FAMILIAR QUALIFICATIONS.

ualifications range from entry level up to Level 8. Some are available at several levels, for example Functional Skills and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) which are awarded at Entry Level and Levels 1, 2 and 3. Others, like A-levels, HNCs (Higher National Certificates) and HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) are only offered at a single level.

GCSES

GCSES are graded – with grades D-G (in the new system these will be grades 3-1) being classed as a Level 1 qualification and grades A*-C (these will be grades 8–4) being Level 2. The new grade 9 will be reserved for exceptional candidate results.

AS AND A-LEVELS A-levels are studied full time over 2 years and like GCSEs, you will normally study for several A-levels or a combination of A-levels and vocational qualifications. AS levels are assessed in the summer after 1 year of study and the marks awarded no longer count towards your final A-level result, which is assessed at the end of Year 2. A-levels are graded A-E. The combination of subjects you choose is very important. You need your subjects to support your university application, if you are thinking of applying, so check university websites for details of their specific entry requirements.

AWARDS, CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS Awards, certificates and diplomas are accredited by different awarding bodies such as BTEC, City & Guilds and OCR. Awards, certificates and diplomas have a different number of credits and the time that they take to complete will differ. They are awarded at entry level right up to Level 7, which is the level of a postgraduate certificate or diploma. Awards, certificates and diplomas are available in a huge variety of subjects and within those, they also allow for lots

Universities will tell you whether they have any particular entry requirements for a course and your result can be converted into UCAS points, just like A-level grade.

UNDERSTANDING CHANGES TO GCSES AND A-LEVELS

GCSEs are usually (but do not have to be) studied full time and typically take two years to complete. They are highly valued by schools, colleges and employers and the broad range of subjects you can take is a great way to prepare you for the world of work, further study and apprenticeships.

Students who began their GCSE studies in English language, English literature and maths, in September 2015, will be the first to open up their exam results in August 2017 and see a numerical grade between 9 and 1 rather than the traditional letter grading of A*-G. The new grading system, introduced by Ofqual, is intended to better differentiate between each pupil's performance, particularly between the A*-C, or as it will now be, 9-4 grades.

HERE’S HOW THE NEW GRADING SYSTEM FOR GCSES WILL WORK 9 - is the new 'elite' grade to identify exceptional performance 8 - is equivalent to A* 7 - is the new A grade 5/6 - will straddle the high Cs, low B grades and high B grades allowing for better differentiation 4 - is equivalent to the existing C grade 3-D 2-E 1 - F and G grades are covered by grade 1

A-LEVEL CHANGES The first tranche of reformed AS and A-levels were launched in September 2015. Here’s the low-down on key changes to A level qualifications. • •

irst things first – an apprenticeship isn’t a qualification as such, although you will study for nationally recognised qualifications as part of any apprenticeship programme. The North West region had more apprenticeship starts than any other region in England in 2014/15 and 79,310 people began their career as an apprentice. The greatest numbers of apprentices were in business, administration and law; health, public services and care; retail, and engineering and manufacturing technologies, which is great because these are some of the biggest employment sectors in the North West.

One of the attractive things about roles in business and administration is the fact that you can step on to the career ladder in an entry level role and continue to train and develop your skills as you progress up the career ladder.

Caitlen Dawson-Smith is a Technical Microbiology graduate, currently in the role of microbiology officer at Ulverston and is in her third and final rotation on the graduate scheme. “As the microbiology officer for one side of our sterile production stream, I am the key contact in microbiology for manufacturing in that area. I get involved in a lot of production problemsolving and risk assessments, as well as providing microbiology coaching to staff. I am also involved in assessing potential risks to product quality or sterility and suggesting appropriate remedial actions. “I have an undergraduate degree in Medical Microbiology. My ambition is to move into an above-site role. This will allow me to support multiple sites across different global markets with dayto-day micro-problems as well as longer term micro-improvement plans. “I love how varied my job is and the fact that every day I come in to something new and challenging. I really enjoy having to engage my brain and the technical challenges that come with problem solving. I also really like that my role gives me the opportunity to develop knowledge outside of my immediate function in areas like manufacturing and engineering.

“I attended a school that GlaxoSmithKline has close links with. They play an active role in helping to promote apprenticeships to the local community and they visited my school when I was in year 12, to help us gain an insight into the career opportunities that they were offering. Listening to previous apprentices expand on their experiences within the company helped me to recognise the amazing career opportunities that would be offered to me if I was lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship with the company. “I am completing a Level 3 Diploma in Applied Medical Science as part of my apprenticeship, so I am at college one and a half days per week, and here in the laboratory for the other three and a half. We conduct a number of laboratory tests to assure the sterility of the products manufactured here on site, before they can be released to the patient. “As an apprentice I am always trained to the highest standard – not only being trained and assessed on the practical task, but also being trained in the theory of the task. Rotations around the site in different job roles are helping me to gain experience in a variation of sectors and job roles.

I often find myself torn between trying to balance my day-today or longer term project work and having to suddenly drop everything to support production, which means I have to be very sensible with time management. “The best advice I have been given so far in my career is to try different things and find out what motivates you rather than trying to decide what you do from the outset – you don’t necessarily have to choose one career or one job and stick to it for the rest of your life. “I have found that the graduate scheme has been a really great way to give me exposure to different roles across different departments and on different sites and has really allowed me to understand more about what it is that interests me and what it is that gets me up in the morning to come to work. This has given me a much clearer picture of what I would like to be doing in the future.”

ince 1956, the nuclear industry has deepened it roots in the North West region and now offers over 26,000 jobs with organisations such as Sellafield Ltd, EDF Energy, NuGen and URENCO. These jobs cover the lifespan of the sector, from new build projects being developed by NuGen, operating power plants in Heysham in Lancashire, the manufacturing of new fuels for the power plant at Springfields in Preston, all the way through to decommissioning and waste management at Sellafield. The nuclear power renaissance has found its way back to the North West with new build operations due to commence at Moorside, Cumbria and Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, North Wales. These new stations will not just need people to help build them, but also people to run them during their 60 year lifespan. While the North West is home to the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory, which delivers a full range of research and technology to support the nuclear fuel cycle, the careers available are not just in science-focused disciplines. The sector will need people in areas including engineering, welding, accounts, project management, information technology and many other fields of work. For people looking to change career, the nuclear industry should not be ignored. The knowledge, skills and experiences of working in other industries are vital to improving the industry as a whole. The nuclear industry can provide a long-term and stable career so it’s a good industry for

school-leavers to consider. There are many routes into the nuclear power sector and not all of them require a nuclear physics PhD! Anyone who studies a science, technology, engineering, or maths (STEM) subject at GCSE or A-level will be able to look at either an apprenticeship or a graduate scheme. Major nuclear employers, such as Sellafield and EDF Energy offer extensive apprenticeship schemes for people looking to gain a wide variety of skills. An apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn and many apprentices, who join their company straight from school, will also go on to complete a degree. Horizon, one of three new nuclear developers in the UK, has recently started an apprenticeship and a graduate scheme explaining that they want to “give young people and those wanting to re-train - the chance to play a part in one of Europe’s largest energy projects”.

“Careers available are not just in science focused disciplines.” There are a number of graduate schemes in the nuclear industry available to students coming to the end of their university careers. The large companies around the nuclear field in the North West all have their own schemes and are always looking to recruit capable personnel. Other schemes such as 'nucleargraduates' offer graduates the opportunity to work for the biggest nuclear companies, over a two year period. This includes having three, eight month placements based around the UK or abroad, with companies such as Rolls-Royce, Jacobs, INS and the NDA and there are opportunities all across the nuclear industry in the UK and beyond. Rolls-Royce sponsored nuclear graduate Shyam Sikotra said: “This is an industry striving to cut out dependence on fossil fuels – an issue that has always resonated with me. Working in the nuclear industry has given me an insight into the massive and unrivalled challenges facing this country and the rest of the world.”

As an apprentice, you’ll earn while you learn, gain nationally recognised qualifications and develop the skills and knowledge to become a confident and skilled care worker. There are lots of different types of jobs in adult social care, it just depends what you’re interested in and what role best suits your skills. The Army CORPORAL CHARLIE HORNIBLOW, COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEER, CURRENTLY A RECRUITER FOR THE ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS

harlie joined the Army six years ago and completed an apprenticeship in communication systems engineering. Charlie now serves as a member of the specially selected Royal Signals Engagement Team as a Royal Signals Recruiter. The Royal Corps of Signals are leaders in Information Technology and Communications for the British Army and they provide the Army with communications throughout the world and offer a varied and exciting career. When he is not training in Jordan, scaling a mountain or learning to sail, Charlie’s on the lookout for the next generation of British Army apprentices. Charlie visits schools and sixth form colleges providing presentations on the rapidly changing world of communications. Why did you join the Army and was there a defining moment when you realised it was the right choice for you? I joined the Army to gain life experience away from my home town and also to develop myself as an individual. I realised it was the right choice for me when I spoke to the careers centre and my eyes were opened to what was available and what was involved. What type of role do you do? I am Recruiter for the Royal Corps of Signals. This involves delivering presentations to a wide variety of audiences, conducting tasks with students and attending job fairs around the country. What does it feel like to represent the Army in such a public manner? It’s good – I enjoy the recruiting role, engaging with people from all walks of life and no day is the same. I can tell potential recruits that they have everything to gain from qualifications and life experience that you can only get in the Army. With qualifications and experience from the Army you are very employable outside of the Army. What qualifications have you completed with the Army? I have completed an Apprenticeship and Adventurous Training qualifications such as Competent Crew in Sailing and Foundation Mountaineering. Have you gained any other skills? On a personal level I have gained lots of skills. These include improving my overall confidence and also developing my presentation skills – I am now confident in presenting to large audiences. How do your friends and family feel about you being in the Army? They love the fact that I am in the Army and think it is a brilliant job choice for me. f you are thinking of choosing a career in the Armed Forces there is a huge variety of specialist job roles available. From entry level careers which require no formal qualifications, to graduate roles, you can also enter the Armed Forces as an apprentice. The qualifications you'll need and the training you'll be given will be dependent on which role you choose.
