Final Flight Of Vultures!
glu rzinclioscoring. E d a r u with M And I’m going solo under the name
A
t the year’s half way point, the Windsor Scene has born witness to an onslaught of locally produced albums, fantastic touring talent, new collaborations and lots to look forward to in the coming months. Coincidently, as we finished last month’s column with a goodbye to the one and only C-Bass, we start this month’s column with two more goodbyes.
The Divergence of Yellow Wood
On June 16th, Adam Rideout-Arkell casually and quietly released the following press statement via Facebook: “After roughly 7 years since we first started writing in our parents suburban basement, it’s time for the Yellow Wood brothers to lay our partnership to rest. We’ve had some amazing experiences together and most of all created music that we are very proud of. But life changes, and we have new ambitions that are better pursued apart. Matt is headed to music school to work toward a career in audio production and film
AMRA, while working as a record producer and mix engineer (my first production/mix credit will be on Pat Robitaille’s new record, due out this fall). As hard as it is for us to let go of Yellow Wood, it feels like the right thing. We could have continued to soldier on, but for us at this moment, this feels honest, complete. The greatest proof of that is our strengthening friendship since making the decision. There are far too many people we want to thank for their support. Be sure that if you are reading this, you are one of them. Starting today and from now on, our last album “Son of the Oppressor” is now available as a free or Pay-WhatYou-Can download. We want as many people to hear it as possible, so please go download it and share with your friends and enemies.” That pretty much says it all. The Windsor Scene pays a humble respect to Yellow Wood, an act who contributed a driven and unique blend of indie rock that set them apart from every band in the city. Their song, ‘Chinese Women Unite’ took the top honours at this year’s WAMM Music Video Contest (see last month’s issue) and will surely be remembered as one of the catchiest singles to ever come out of the area.
An act that emerged on the scene in 2009, Vultures!, which combined the forces of Scott Warren and Andy Langmuir (of Lone Locust), Anderson Lunau (of Golden Hands Before God) and Kimberly Ann (This Is Me As A Woman), quickly made a name for themselves with a fun synth rock sound. Now they come back after a near year hiatus for one final epic flight. One of Warren’s former Somatose bandmates, guitarist Jeff Riley, joins the band as a new member for a string of great rock shows throughout the first half of the the month, culminating in the the release of new recordings at their farewell show. The opening date sees the band at Phog on Saturday, June 3rd. Coming for the show from Toronto is the high energy grunge rock band Cut Throat Britva, who have climbed out of the basement to become a respected act throughout Ontario, playing along with acts like Young Rival and showcasing at CMW, NXNE and a recent Steamwhistle /Edge FM Session. This show marks their first visit to the venue. Also along for the ride are the hard hitting and always enjoyable Explode When They Bloom who keep pushing forward in promotion of their release The Ugly with their last performance in these summer months.. www.myspace.com/cutthroatbritva www.myspace.com/explodewhentheybloom The second show sees the band playing in support the black metal roots
nomads Jucifer (Relapse Records) at The Coach and Horses on Thursday, June 8th. This ‘wall of sound’ rock duo has been touring constantly in their RV for the better part of 17 years melting faces across Europe and North America. The band’s latest release ‘Throned In Blood’ has garnered them positive reviews from the likes of Exclaim, Pitchfork and Guitar Player. Jucifer is not a band to be missed by fans of the loud; if you’re just hearing about them now, you’ve been missing out. Some more good local heaviness to round out the bill is Vaudevillianaires who play in promotion of their
debut recording released just last month as well as Destroy Thy Will who continue their work with Fifty Watt Head on their debut release. www.jucifer.com The final show has the act playing with two bands that share their appetite for loud, high energy synth rock at the first of two FAM Festival pre-parties happening this summer at the FM Lounge on Friday, June 16th. Toronto’s Make Me Young, with members hailing from Amherstberg, have made a positive impression here in the city over the past couple of years and are now starting to see some play of their self-
titled record on CBC Radio 3. Also on the bill: Surdaster, an act that has continually packed shows over the past few months and are looking to make impression on Windsor’s rock fans. Vultures!, all be it a short lived venture, was an extremely fun act act to see live and see develop and they may not be an act that goes down in the annals of rock history but these guys and gal sure as hell know how to go out in style. www.myspace.com/vulturescanada www.myspace.com/makemeyoung
directly involved with, but like this column, Harvesting The FAM Festival, is a completely volunteer based endeavour, and in that, I don’t feel so bad. FAM (Filmmakers/Artists/Musicians) Festival started back in 2007 has quickly grown to become the one of the area’s largest independent inter-arts festivals. Last year the festival
FAM Fest 5 I don’t make mention of events I’m

drew out a diverse array of acts (over 80) from Windsor, Detroit and greater Ontario as well as hundreds of Windsor music fans. This year’s festival is scheduled for October 1st-9th offering an even greater opportunity for fans to see and for talents to be seen. The best part of all is that it’s 100% free! No application charges, no admission fees, just a celebration of local culture of all kinds at venues in the downtown core. Film, art and music talents of any medium and genre as well as volunteers looking to get involved in this year’s festival can email: famfest@live.com. The submission period will run the entire month of July. www.famfest.ca

There’s something to be excited about for music fans living in the west end of town this summer. The Domonion House has renewed its commitment to live originally produced music with the re-opening of their basement venue ‘Down The Stairs.’ The initiative is being headed up by local musician Josh Olsen (Sean Connery Supergroup, Water/Heart) who has teamed with the DH owners to book a series of shows that put local talent first. The first of the shows occurs on Friday, July 2nd, and features one of the area’s finest singer-songwriters, Pat Robitaille, who recently moved from Windsor to the Simcoe-Collingwood region. But don’t expect him to to disappear from the local scene, with shows like this one and his work with Adam Rideout-Arkell on his next release, hopefully we won’t have to miss this musician too much. Opening the evening is acoustic act Richard Brady and a new local power-pop quartet The Dance Floor. www.patrobitaille.com
Keep Rowing
Windsor ex-pat Craig Gloster returns to Windsor with his dark, spacey, shoegaze rock project Fjord Rowboat at Phog on Friday, July 9. Fjord Rowboat has been defining their sound for seven years with a roster of top level musicians that has largely gone unchanged since the band’s inception. They come to us with a new offering ‘Under Cover Of Brightness’ which saw its release in June at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Also on the bill is local act Two For The Cascade who come back with their own blend spaced indie rock after a brief hiatus while transitioning to a new work space. The band’s drummer, George Manury, kept himself busy during the break by recording and releasing a solo EP. Manury, who also plays in the punk-folk outfit Magic Hall Of Mirrors, has been refining his solo acoustic stylings live to the delight of audiences at events and shows around town. In a move other musicians might not think to make, Manury has mapped out a week long tour of open mic nights happening throughout southern Ontario. The ‘Open Mic Tour’ starts on Monday, July 12th at Phog’s Open Mic Surgery hosted by Tara Watts and comes back to town on Sunday, July 18th at The FM Lounge for a big finish featuring a full backing band. www.fjordrowboat.com www.myspace.com/georgemanury
In The Works June saw a huge rush of new releases from some of Windsor’s most talented and respected independent musicians. While July is a little less release heavy their are several projects and a handful of great shows in the works we can let you in on. On Saturday July 10th, watch the music video and listen to the first single from Ben Clark
& Bori Afolabi’s full-length album that will be coming out this summer. Clark, who has done well as a solo performer and Alfolabi, who turned heads fronting indie rock band Firelife come together in this promising new collaboration. Also on July 10th, the Toronto indie rock four piece The Junction play a rare intimate show at Phog along with Frontiers. What Seas, What Shores is putting the final touches on a 7 inch vinyl release with production work from James OL, who along with his Villains tours Ontario and Quebec this month. What Seas bassist and experimental electronic wizard Martin Schiller (87 Things For The Future) joins the ranks of Poughboy who return to the city with the release of a new concept album in the late summer. Red Rows goes into the studio to lay down their debut recordings this month. This trio has been getting attention with their technical post-punk sound playing some mind blowing sets. One of the area’s heaviest acts, Aquila, return to to play in Windsor for the first time since December 2009 on Friday, July 16th at the Chubby Pickle’s Picklefest (Sledgehammer, Odium, Our Lady of Bloodshed and more). Richy Nix, who has also found a considerable amount of success touring throughout the states is putting Windsor on the map while performing with acts like God Smack, Papa Roach, Deftones, 3 Days Grace and Snoop Dogg. He returns to play the Pickle the following night on Saturday, July 17th with Rose City Rags. Sinnastarr, who now bring us the likes of High On Fire, Priestess and Skeleton Witch, presents the show that could top the visit we got from Shadows Fall earlier this year. Head to the Blind Dog on Sunday, July 18th to get in on Windsor’s biggest circle-pit. www.benandbori.com www.myspace.com/highonfire

C
hart Attack Magazine said of his 2009 LP ‘Censored,’ ‘There’s really nothing here you want to hear more than once.’ Though in the real charts Fortunately Everything Dies’ ‘Censored’ found itself in the top 20 electronic albums of 2009, along with Junior Boys, MSTRKRFT and YACHT, but unlike the aforementioned artists, Fortunately Everything Dies isn’t on a label or known to anyone or even that listenable. A project of Chris White, FED is noisy, glitchy and ambient an may very well be a response to the
thousands of records he scans through every week as CJAMs music director. White decides the fate of releases that fall through the CJAM letterbox, whether a new CD for the library or another silver circle for the dustbin, it is all in his hands. If the assault on his ears has influenced his soundscapes, the deplorable design of many record sleeves have influenced his packaging. While FED albums are available to the public exclusively via the internet, when he sends his releases to radio stations around the country, every sleeve is different. Each disc lives in an appropriated, repurposed package saved by White from the pile of rejected CDs at his
desk. From random classical albums to the new Queen Latifah releases, (god only knows why it was sent to a campus station,) White digs out his scissors, Sharpie and tape and gets to work. The new Fortunately Everything Dies collection ‘Horror’ hits the virtual shelves on the 5th of July, but unless you are Chris White or one of his fellow music directors you’ll not have a chance to see the finished visual products, unless you look at this page, visit chrisrwhite.wordpress.com or alternately fortunatelyeverythingdies. bandcamp.com.

f you are one of the many people who wrote, and continue to write, to WAMM assuring us that the best feature we ever ran was the ‘History of Windsor Punk’ piece (issue 8 | November 2008) and you have a computer then this blog is for you. Jim Meloche of Windsor punk traditionalists Orphan Choir has long been a collector of Windsor’s punk rock ephemera has dedicated a corner of the web to preserving some of the many recordings created over the years in this city. The DIY nature of punk meant most recordings were self-released, usually in small numbers
and more often then not on cassette tape, a medium that has unlike vinyl and CD has all but disappeared. Meloche, luckily was inspired enough to dig the box cassettes and 7” singles from under his bed, wire a cassette deck to his computer and register a domain name. Every entry in The Windsor DIY Archive (windsordiy.blogspot.com) features a forgotten release; the details behind it, a scan of the sleeve and most importantly and often for the first time a digital download of the
tracks, all free. Entries so far have included The Prehistoric Cavestrokers, Searchingforchin, Elk, Full White Drag, Disco Assault, Closed Casket Funeral, Clusterfuxx, The Lager Lads, Big Daddy A & the Merves, Tension, Village Idiot and many more. Do it yourself, type ‘windsordiy.blogspot.com’ into your favourite browser and return to a time when cassette hiss, Xeroxed sleeves and a real spirit of DIY was alive and unwell, you can almost smell the floor of Jimmy’s Pub.

Rose City Sessions Vol.2
Orphan Choir & Jason Deary @ The Old Hiram Walker
R
ose City Sessions is a collaborative project that brings together Windsor, Ontario based filmmakers, visual artists, musicians, writers, photographers, and recording engineers to shine a light on our community’s burgeoning artistic and musical talents. Rose City Sessions is operated and produced in Windsor, by Windsorites, for Windsorites.
The mission is simple: to create live audio/visual representations of Windsor-Essex County talents in the highest quality possible. Each month, more free online materials and downloads will become available. Each live session pairs a Windsor-Essex County based visual artist with a musician or act. In addition to the audio and video content, read blogs about the production process, profiles and interviews with featured artists and musicians or peruse the project’s growing photo archive. The second Rose City Session was recorded in the old Hiram Walker building in east Windsor. The gritty blown out space offered a fitting background for the month’s featured artists, but the three story room set the reverb to high, and was the initial challenge to the audio engineers. Add in ‘the blue screen of death’ and the drive to get a new computer and the session was creeping towards the four hour mark without a single usable audio recording. It was really a tribute to the DIY spirit in Jason Deary and Orphan Choir who stuck it out through all these problems to walk away with complete documentation. Jason Deary, a graduate of Fine Arts at the University of Windsor, was painting and illustrating long before he began his upper education as a student a Walkerville High School. From there Deary refined his skills over the coming years, which led to his first public exhibition at The Cobrasnake Yard Sale, a charity arts and music event held in the summer of 2008. At the event Deary received accolades from all in attendance for his style that fuses skateboarding, comic book, street art and rock n’ roll culture into a style that is
distinctly his own. Deary’s colour pallette has such a wide spectrum in every painting that it is difficult to anticipate where he’ll go next. Since the yard sale, Deary has shown his work at various exhibitions throughout town and has been noticed by Bench, providing them with an exclusive shirt design as well as winning an art contest with a popular snowboarding magazine just last year. Most recently Deary is pushing forward with a growing series of t-shirts which feature limited runs of his illustration works. More akin to the type of work you’d find in Juxtapoz Magazine, Deary’s work is some of the most promising in Windsor’s recent history.
Orphan Choir is a true blue punk rock band. Their DIY ambition knows no bounds, their instrumentation is driven and focused and an overwhelming amount of passion springs forth out from their lyrics, whether you listen to the recordings or have a chance to catch the band live. Orphan Choir has been a staple of the Windsor punk scene for the past four years but have musical roots in the local community going back much further than that, most notably singer and frontman Jim Meloche’s involvement with Windsor punk-hardcore legends, Searching For Chin. Since 2006 the Choir has dropped four 7-inch split releases through their self-started label Tragic Comedy as well as underground labels like No Scene and Vinyl Addict until they found their home with the Buffalo based rock label Art Of The Underground. With Art Of The Underground, Orphan Choir released their debut full length album in the fall of 2009 to such a positive response the label decided to press the band’s first vinyl LP. With two national tours in the bag and an upcoming east coast tour this July, Orphan Choir is a band that shows they aren’t letting up anytime soon. Playing alongside respected punk acts like Leatherface, Chuck Ragan, Tim Barry, Cancerbats, Fucked Up and Against Me among others, Orphan Choir have taken their place as one of the top punk acts in the province with greater national success looming in the future, all the while championing Windsor’s cultural community every step of the way. Reigning Queen of Burlesque Miss Exotic World 2010
Roxi Dlite
E
very four years, soccer fans get painted up, yell and honk their horns in support of their favourite team in the World Cup. The Olympics introduce us to the world’s fastest, strongest, best athletes. We sit through hours of boring Oscars every year to see what film takes the coveted “best picture” title (or simply who is wearing what on the red carpet). In the world of burlesque, the best fan dancers and tassel twirlers compete annually in the Miss Exotic World pageant, part of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend, which takes place where else, but Las Vegas. Canada’s reigning queen of burlesque, Windsor native Roxi Dlite, has taken her title to an international level. After bringing home the first runner-up trophy in the contest in 2009, Dlite left Vegas with the winning tiara firmly on her head this June. Ms. Dlite is a performer, photographer, and pin-up model who has been on the burlesque scene since 2004. Burlesque theatre, specifically the classic striptease act, was popular in the early 20th century, and saw a revival in the 1990s. Celebrity performers like Dita Von Teese brought the glamour, sass and humour of burlesque out of the underground and into the mainstream. While burlesque acts can take many forms, using elaborate props, or simply just a fan, gloves and pasties, Dlite is known for her signature aerial act, which she learned from a former Cirque Du Soleil member. However, for the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend, Windsor’s sassiest export knew she had to push her act
even further. “After I trophied and placed second last year, I knew I had to up the ante a bit,” Dlite explains. “I remember thinking, ‘how can I top myself?’ To my surprise I really did.” The act that topped all others was a cigar-themed number inspired by Marlene Dietrich. “I saw an old photo of Marlene Dietrich smoking a cigar and then it came to me -- how phallic is a giant cigar when a girl sits atop it?” says Dlite. She also took inspiration in the way the cigar motif fit perfectly with her own tagline, “The Drinkin’, Smokin’, Strippin’ Machine.” For those who couldn’t make it to Vegas for the show, here’s the rundown: “the act starts out with me smoking a cigar in a purple smoking jacket,” explains Dlite. “I perform a striptease and then the curtains open to reveal the giant 12-foot smoking cigar and ashtray which I ride as I flip my hair. That’s where the phallic theme comes in.” While a lot of contemporary burlesque performers take an approach that is more cheeky than outright sexy, Dlite wanted her cigar act to break out of this trend. “I wanted something that involved smoking and was a little dark and even a bit raunchy,” she says. “It’s a bit more on the raunchy, sexy side which is something I feel has been lost in the art of burlesque. I feel it’s all becoming too cute and I really want to stay away from that. Being cute is fun and all but the audience also wants to be aroused. Every once and a while they need a performer who makes their jaws drop to the floor.” Jaws certainly dropped in Vegas,
including Roxi Dlite’s as she was crowned Miss Exotic World 2010 by last year’s winner Kalani Kokonuts. “You can practice your show over and over but
“
in what was going on, I’ll admit that I cried tears of happiness, I was just so happy,” she remembers. “After that it was insanity, lots of pictures and drinking to celebrate. I think my lipstick was smeared in every photo because everyone kept kissing me!” This burley-q sense of support pervaded the entire Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. As Dlite explains, “the weekend is first and foremost a reunion. Everyone is hugging each other and catching up. Most of us all know each other even though we live all over the world, from London to Vancouver, New York and even all the way to Japan! My favourite part of the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend is seeing all my friends and catching up.” With burlesque performers and fans from around the world, the weekend even manages to make Vegas more colourful and bright. “If you look around while waiting for the show to start, you’re surrounded by the blinking lights of the slot machines and standing in the middle of a beautiful crowd of men and women dressed in suits and sequin dresses. The burlesque crowed is very colourful, with big hair and big personalities to match,” says Dlite, adding, “I am so very lucky to be a part of such a wonderful supportive community.” It is not just Roxi Dlite’s contemporaries that support and offer inspiration, as she cites some legends of burlesque as major influences on her art. “Many burlesque legends were the foremothers to modern stripping. They were true exotic dancers, masters of the art of striptease. They performed seven nights a week all over the country but in many ways they were pushed into the background. This is why the Burlesque Hall of Fame was created. The legends of burlesque are such a huge part of Americana and now their stories live on through the Burlesque Hall of Fame,” she explains. As someone in the minority in burlesque, performing the same shows at burlesque nights and gentleman’s clubs, Dlite can
says Dlite. “She performs a beautiful balloon routine to an instrumental version of Moon River. I’ve adored Julie’s performance style for years and have been really lucky to get to know her a lot over the past year; she is a beautiful person inside and out.” In the audience when Roxi Dlite received her crown was another legend, Big Fannie Annie. “She was a burlesque comedian in her prime who started in carnivals at the age of 15,” notes Dlite. “At the height of her career she was a 600 lb showgirl that could make any sailor blush, and still can to this day. Annie is very supportive of me; she was in the audience and in tears when I won. I love her dearly.” Not everyone immediately took to Roxi Dlite’s burlesque career. While her family are now her biggest supporters, they had their qualms about her performances at first. After an education in burlesque, this early skepticism has completely vanished. “I’ve made them very proud,” she notes. “They understand that I have my head on straight and I’m actually in love with the art form. A lot of my family came to Vegas this year to support me; I’m just so happy that they saw me win. It really meant a lot.” Beyond her family, Dlite appreciates everyone who has helped her reach this level of success in the art she loves. “It was hard at first. There isn’t a great deal of room for a full time burlesque performer. I was performing for next to nothing when I first started. I would drive for hours just to be on stages with other burleskers. Often it would cost me money but I loved what I was doing and I knew that I had to pay my dues.” Now that these dues have been paid, and have paid off in dividends, Dlite has big plans for the future. “I’m working on my biggest show to date... It’s going to be a very beautiful number inspired by the incredibly artistic Ziegfeld who glorified beautiful women,” she says. If that is not enough, she has a tour of Europe
I perform a striptease and then the curtains open to reveal the giant 12-foot smoking cigar and ashtray which I ride as I flip my hair. That’s where the phallic theme comes in.”

no one can ever practice winning,” says Dlite. “When they called my name I grabbed a bottle of vodka to celebrate. I brought it on stage and shared it with Kalani Kokonuts. She then crowned me and gave me the trophy. I had no idea what to do; I went to go stand with everyone but was told to prance around the stage and do that wave thing. So I ran around the stage in circles completely lost. It was actual quite comical, I guess. I really didn’t know what to do. I am a bit shy at heart, believe it or not. All I wanted to do was stand with everyone behind me.” It wasn’t until she left the stage that the win completely hit her. “Afterward I had a moment in the backstage office to breath and take
relate to Candy Barr, a stripper and burlesque performer from the 1950s: “she was a really strong woman who endured a lot in her youth, but all she wanted to do was dance. She got a lot of joy out of it. I’m currently reading her book; her story is really incredible. I’ve seen some videos of her dancing: it’s raw. She just really tunes in and actually hears the music and dances to every beat.” Dlite also cites 1930s burlesquer Sally Rand and her creative acts such as feather fan dances and performances involving giant balloons as inspiring. “One of my favourite burlesque performers of today, Julie Atlas Muz, is most known for her modern take on this classic show,”
and Australia in the works, and is prepping for the Toronto Burlesque Festival, which runs July 21st to 25th, where you can catch her performing the winning cigar act. For more information check out www. torontoburlesquefestival.com. From a Windsor-girl inspired by old school striptease sophistication to the international Queen of Burlesque, Roxi Dlite is a burlesque success story. “Burlesque has really changed my life,” she gushes. “I’m in love with an amazing man, I have photography studio to fall back on thanks to my graphic design background, and my family supports me. As my grandmother would say... ‘Life is salubrious!’”
