Welcome n
Mansion In May 2012
In th e Spirit of What Matters W
hat an honor it has been to lead the signature fundraiser of the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center – the 16th Mansion in May held in the event’s 38-year history. It is with great pride that we welcome you to Glynallyn! In the spirit of an ancient proverb, we like to say that it takes a village to build a Mansion in May, and that village is our community. The journey of Mansion in May 2012 began nearly one year ago when a hidden treasure in the heart of Morris County – an estate known as Glynallyn – became our diamond in the rough. To make this diamond shine, we reached out to our community. It has been amazing and gratifying to watch the transformation of the Mansion and to see over one thousand people come together to make it all happen, and we are grateful to all who participated. Mansion in May is much more than a Designer Showhouse and Garden tour for you to enjoy. Mansion in May is about what matters to the Women’s Association and about what matters to our community. What matters to us is Morristown Medical Center. What matters to us is our cause – the new Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center at the hospital. This center will matter to families in the community who will rely on the services of the dedicated doctors and staff to help them better cope with one of the most difficult times of their lives. What matters to us is the loyalty and support of the community that has come together to work so hard to bring this Mansion in May to you. Our community reaches far beyond the walls of the Mansion, and the spirit of our community resonates throughout the entire Mansion in May effort. The spirit of our community is in the support of Morristown Medical Center and Atlantic Health System. The spirit of our community is in the Community Bank of Bergen County who opened up the doors of Glynallyn to us and worked by our side every step of the way. The spirit of our community is in the generosity of our corporate sponsors, in-kind and individual donors, patrons and contributors. The spirit of our community is in the creativity of the Interior and Landscape Designers who worked tirelessly to present to you their spectacular spaces. The spirit of our community is in the expertise and professionalism of our service providers. The spirit of our community is in the participation of vendors who, while providing our guests with shopping and dining enjoyment, give back to our cause. The spirit of our community is in the leadership and passion of the fortyseven Mansion in May Executive Board members who donate to us the gift of their time and talent. The spirit of our community is in the 1,000 volunteers who selflessly devote countless hours of their time pulling it all together and making it all work. The spirit of our community is in you as you have chosen to spend the day supporting our cause, and for that, we sincerely thank you.

Welcome n
A Message from th e Wom en’s Association President W
elcome to Glynallyn, our 16th Mansion in May. As president of the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center, I am so happy to invite you into a time past when beautiful mansions and their gracious owners received guests at the end of a tree-lined drive. Visitors entered through arched doorways into beautiful rooms full of polished wood, shining crystal, comfortable furniture, lovely antiques and the fragrance of fresh flowers. This beautiful home has been transformed to its glorious past by our talented, hardworking and outstanding professional designers, landscapers, landscape architects, contractors, craftsmen and women! We sincerely thank them for the donation of their time, talent and resources. Without them, we would not have this spectacular mansion for you to tour. We especially thank the owners of this property, Community Bank of Bergen County and their President and CEO, Peter Michelotti. Our real heroes are the great team of Dannette Merchant and Nathalie Dennis, Chairwomen of Mansion In May 2012. They have worked tirelessly since July 2011 on this project, pulling together an over-the-top talented team of 46 committee chairs to make this month-long designer showhouse happen. They have all reached out to friends, family and tradesmen to contribute to bringing this property to its current state of splendor. They recruited over 1,000 volunteers to make this event flow effortlessly. You have the opportunity to tour beautiful and interesting rooms and magnificent gardens, shop till you drop, and sit to enjoy tasty meals in good company. We are so lucky to have Country Picnic and owner, Cliff Cababe as our café caterer in the Castle Café. If you do not want it to end, you can purchase a beautiful piece from your favorite design or landscape space to remember your day at Glynallyn. New for Mansion in May 2012, we are pleased to have ASP1RE NJ Magazine as our Journal and Marketing sponsor. Publisher, Steven Mandel and his team of professionals designed this beautiful program and also helped to bring Mansion in May to the next level in print media and design. Their partnership has taught us what real beauty in printing is all about! So why do so many people work so long and so hard on a project like this? In the past 38 years, Mansion in May, in addition to revitalizing beautiful properties in New Jersey, has raised over $6 million for Morristown Medical Center’s programs, equipment and services. This year’s beneficiary is the new Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center that will be built with 100% donated funds. That is why the Women’s Association has pledged $1 million for this cause! Please help us reach our goal by coming back to Glynallyn with new friends to enjoy it again and again throughout the month. These fundraisers only happen through the efforts and hard work of our members and volunteers. I sincerely thank them. I also thank you for contributing through your visit to Mansion in May at Glynallyn. Enjoy your time here! The Head Worker Bee,

I
t is with great pleasure and gratitude that we welcome you to the Women’s Association’s 16th Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens.
Proceeds from this year’s featured mansion will go to the new Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center to be built at Morristown Medical Center, for which the Women’s Association has pledged $1 million. The center will provide a much-needed private, compassionate space for patients with chronic or life-limiting illness to help them live as comfortably as they can, for as long as they can. The private patient suites will feature the latest medical treatment but with the feel of an elegant private home.
Through creative fundraising projects, including this signature event, the Women’s Association has contributed millions of dollars to improve the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, the Emergency Department, and the Valerie Fund Children’s Center at Morristown Medical. The Women’s Association also provides financial support through its Bargain Box Thrift Shop and three hospital gift shops. As a volunteer organization, the members are also responsible for several service programs, such as providing art in public areas of the hospital, fresh flowers in the chapel, holiday decorations, and scholarship funds for deserving staff. Since its inception in 1893, the Women’s Association has been dedicated to improving health care in our community (they even purchased the hospital’s first ambulance). Today, that mission continues at Glynallyn. Thank you for making this Mansion in May another resounding success.

Each day, we have 14 billion little reminders to continue advancing eye health. From the moment we open our eyes and start to view the possibilities of each new day, we look at how we can improve the well-being of the world’s 14 billion eyes. Will this be the day when one of us unlocks a way to eliminate visual impairment in newborns? Or strikes upon a treatment that actually helps the eye heal itself? To us, these are not some distant hopes. They are the daily questions that add new urgency to all we do and everything we see for the future. We’re Bausch + Lomb. One company solely focused on advancing the vision and care of the world’s eyes.

Inpatient Hospice & Palliative Care Center
A Must for Morristown Medical Center
T
he Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center is proud to support the new Inpatient Hospice & Palliative Care Center at Morristown Medical Center and has pledged $1 million toward its construction. All proceeds from Mansion in May 2012 are dedicated to this pledge. The sole mission of the new Inpatient Hospice & Palliative Care Center at Morristown Medical Center is to help patients with chronic or life-limiting illness live as comfortably as they can, for as long as they can. With medicine’s emphasis on technology, the human dimensions of suffering are sometimes given little attention. The goal of palliative care is not to cure, but to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for seriously ill patients. For patients with chronic disease, palliative care helps maximize their overall health and well being by tapping into their individual vitality. For those facing terminal illness, hospice care helps ease the journey from this life to the next. The Inpatient Hospice & Palliative Care Center will be the first of its kind at Morristown Medical Center and will demonstrate the commitment to treating the whole patient, regardless of prognosis. Services will be designed to address each patient and family’s unique needs, offering individual choices, dignity and respect. Dr. Karen Knops, Medical Director of Palliative Care, will lead a seasoned, compassionate team of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and clergy who will collaboratively develop palliative interventions. Services will include pain management, psychological counseling, religious/spiritual support, guidance in making complex treatment choices, and bereavement services that will take survivors through a step-by-step journey toward reassurance, understanding, acceptance and ultimately healing. The 11-bed unit will be located in the main hospital, providing immediate and convenient access to staff and services. The Center will have a residential look and feel - much like an elegant private home with soothing colors, ambient lighting and tasteful furnishings. Private patient suites will include accommodations for overnight visitors. Common areas will feature expansive windows and sunrooms, as well as a relaxing outdoor patio space and meditation room. Anticipated cost projection is $5 million, which includes repurposing part of a floor in the main hospital, updating infrastructure and systems, and purchasing equipment and furnishings. Your contribution to Mansion in May 2012 will be directed toward the realization of the new Center, reinforcing Morristown Medical Center’s commitment to treating the whole patient. We thank you for your support!
W
hen I received the official letter from the Women’s Association announcing the $1 million pledge towards the new Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center, I was beyond thrilled. It is truly an honor for our patients and their families. Our Palliative Care team looks forward to promoting Mansion in May and assisting to make it succeed beyond all expectations. This will be an amazing opportunity to demonstrate to our community that we value our patients as unique human beings who matter from the time of birth to the time of death. Since the word about this project has begun to spread, I have had wonderful feedback from our hospital staff and there is an overwhelming sense that the time is right for this endeavor. Thank you from the bottom of my heart— Karen M. Knops, MD

History n
Glynallyn G
lynallyn is a grand 3-story, 32,000 square-foot mansion that was built from 1913-1917 by George Marshall Allen and is rich in history. It features over 60 rooms abounding with architectural intricacies and surprising details around every corner. In 1987, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the late 19th century in the New Jersey countryside, Morristown became a desirable summer retreat for wealthy New York industrialists and business leaders who built grand mansions along what was nobly hailed as Millionaire’s Row on Madison Avenue. Among these entrepreneurs was George Marshall Allen, a publisher, amateur photographer, pioneer of color printing and yachtsman who, in the fall of 1912, purchased nearly 10 acres of land (adding more acreage later) in Convent Station to build a country estate for his family – wife, Grace Fanshawe Allen and daughter, Loraine Allen. In his global travels, Mr. Allen struck an interest in the Tudor architecture of England and became intrigued by a sixteenth century Warwickshire castle, Compton Wynyates. Compton Wynyates was completed in the early 1500s after several decades of labor, and served as the ancestral residence for Sir William Compton. Visitors to the castle included Sir William’s lifelong friend, King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I. The castle has served as the seat of the Marquis of Northampton and remains in the Compton family today. To realize his vision of a regal Tudor George Marshall Allen manor, Mr. Allen commissioned
renowned New York architect Charles I. Berg to visit and study Compton Wynyates, and to adapt an architectural design plan for a country estate on his newly acquired Morris County property. Mr. Allen chose the wooded land in Convent Station, as it is reminiscent of the rolling English countryside where Compton Wynyates stands. As the property sits on the edge of a deep glen, he bestowed the name Glynallyn upon the homestead. In 1913, construction of a lodge and garage on the property began, and when it was finished in 1914, it served as temporary housing for the Allen family while the mansion was being erected. By the end of 1914, the foundation of the house was done, however, with the onset of World War I, construction was halted until 1916 when it resumed again. Glynallyn was largely completed in 1917, and Mr. and Mrs. Allen were able to host the wedding of their daughter in their new summer retreat on August 21st of that same year. It is estimated that at the time of its construction, the house cost $500,000 to build including $15,000 for the stained glass windows in the Great Hall. The profound architectural details and accomplishments of the home were highlighted in an article that appeared in the December 1918 issue of The Architectural Forum. In the article, according to Mr. Berg, the principal portions of the home that were copied from Compton Wynyates are the main entrance, the group of five grand stained glass windows on the façade of the house, and the large second-story bay

window. The distinctive chimneystacks, 16 in total, were also replicated from the ancient castle. Mr. Allen’s goal was to have the new home resemble that of a weathered, 400-year old castle. This was achieved by the careful, deliberate selection of desired materials. Hand-made bricks with rough edges, uneven and varying color laid in irregular lines were used on the exterior of the home along with pitted, stained, unevenly textured limestone. Rough timber from old ships and skids were used for the traditional Tudor-style trim work and the slate chosen for the roof was of an irregular shape and thickness with uneven color. There are many unique, elaborate carvings on the exterior of the home including the Fanshawe family crest at the main entrance, flourishes and badges of English royalty, gargoyles and caricatures. Intrinsic features of Tudor castles such as turrets, battlements, crenellated parapet walls and gables are not spared in the ornate details of the sprawling edifice. The interior of the home has countless intricate features at every turn. Upon entering the home through the medieval doors, visitors arrive in the Little Hall, a quaint room featuring

centuries-old oak paneling that Mr. Allen acquired from Compton Wynyates during renovation work being done there. There is also a rustic fireplace that is a replica of one in a cottage built for William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, in Stratford-on-Avon, England. Immediately off of the Little Hall is the piéce de resistance of the dwelling, the Great Hall, with its soaring, vaulted ceiling of nearly 3 stories with timber beams and rafters. Amid the brick wall of the 1,300 square-foot room are the regal hand-painted stained glass windows, and tucked in the corner in an oriel bay is a petite stairway leading up to an enchanting organ loft. This stairway is exceptionally unique in that in order to ascend it, one must begin with the right foot as each tread is cut diagonally across so that two risers occupy the space of one tread in order to save space. Hidden behind one of the walls in the Great Hall is a secret circular, intentionally worn stone stairway that leads down to a medieval dungeon with vaulted ceilings and gothic arches. If you look closely around, you’ll see curiously carved faces peering at you from the stone walls. An enormous fireplace, antique lanterns and Shakespearean stage add to the gothic ambiance of the room. Equally remarkable rooms on the first floor include a 1,000 square-foot library with ceiling-high oak paneling imported from England by W. & J. Sloane, an ornately carved fireplace surround and a sculptured plaster ceiling copied from a room at Oxford University; a covered winter porch with an outdoor fireplace; an intriguing and finely detailed chapel with a mosaic floor; a morning room with an exquisitely arched doorway and a picturesque bay window; and, a spacious dining room with a 17-foot bay window and a hidden vaulted safe. When Glynallyn was built, the kitchen was a small and isolated space for use by the servants. In early 2012, the kitchen was completely expanded and renovated. The second floor of the home served as the living quarters for the family and their guests with generously sized bedrooms, all of which have individual bathrooms and fireplaces. The guest room is an especially charming space with many detailed wood carvings and whimsical characters adorning the windows. The fully finished attic has a 6-room apartment and has a space modeled after a room at Compton Wynyates called the Priest’s Room was that was used by Mr. Allen as his photography studio. This room features a lofty beamed ceiling,

an expansive skylight and an exposed brick fireplace. The servants’ wing of Glynallyn extends over 3 floors on the east end of the house, as well as into the basement, and in this wing is a 1915 Sedgwick freight elevator that operates from the basement to the third floor. Stained and leaded glass muntined windows are showered throughout the house, as are fine wood trim carvings. Many of the rooms are embellished with elaborately sculpted plaster and all of the rooms have a fireplace, except those in the servants’ wing. Sparing no detail to safety, many of the walls are two-feet thick and the house has its own system of built-in fire hoses. Noted landscape architects Brinley & Holbrook designed and developed the lavish grounds for Mr. Allen. Substantial lawns abutting the tree-lined driveway leading to the portico flank the home. A fieldstone terrace with a brick balustrade runs along the south side of the house and features a slate covered cloister with gothic window arches and an ornate wrought iron door. Beyond the terrace, curious remains of terraced gardens, stairways and gothic gates edge the lush, wooded ravine. At one time, the meticulous landscape of Glynallyn featured a

moat and a noted sunken rock garden with a miniature canal and fountain that was featured in American Gardens 18901930 (Sam Watters, Acanthus Press, New York, 2006, p.45). In its heyday, with the Allen family in residence, Glynallyn was the venue for many opulent social events and was a prominent home of distinction. Maintaining the home at that time required the services of 8 servants, 7 gardeners and 2 chauffeurs. Each year, it took 125 tons of coal to heat the house – so much so that a miniature railroad was used in the basement to bring coal to the furnaces. Over the course of the years, a silent movie was filmed there and the ceremonies of four weddings and a funeral took place. Mr. Allen died in 1941 and his widow remarried in 1946. Within a year after her death in 1951, the home was sold to General Drafting Company, a successful map-making business. Keeping the historical significance of the dwelling in mind, the company made several modifications to convert the residence into offices where they operated for nearly forty years, closing in 1992. Since then, the home has had only one other family in residence having purchased the property in 1997. Today, Glynallyn resides on 7.5 acres and is unoccupied. A portion of the property with the associated outlying buildings was sold as a separate lot, and the carriage house now serves as a private residence. Although many of the turnof-the-century mansions of the Gilded Age in Morristown are no longer standing, the regal Glynallyn still reigns in historical glory.

Handcrafted Since 1926 Skilled craftsmen hand make DUXŽ Beds today just as carefully as our artisans did in 1926. They use the finest materials: hardy pine from our Northern forests, thousands of strong Swedish steel springs, high thread count cotton and latex harvested from the rubber tree. Our craftsmen fashion The DUX Bed by hand during weeks of intense effort. They are committed to the craft of quality, and that’s why a DUX Bed can last for generations.

Upon approach to the long, tree-lined driveway, one gets the immediate sense of having traveled back in time to arrive at a centuries-old Elizabethan Tudor castle in the English countryside with an imposing fortified entrance and majestic stained glass windows stretching high upon its façade. It was a time when monarchs reigned supreme and gallant knights on horses stood guard...welcome to Glynallyn. The Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center proudly presents its 16th Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens at Glynallyn. Proceeds will be directed toward the new Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Morristown Medical Center.

Handsom e Little Devil
As the entrance, “Handsome Little Devil” sets the stage for the experience that is Glynallyn. An eclectic mix of Elizabethan, Georgian, and Contemporary, this room is meant to reflect the American connoisseur of the early 1900’s. The space is conceived as a Turn of the Century version of the family room; cozy and comfortable, whimsical, yet posh. The room takes its name from the Italian Renaissance style pedestal next to the sofa, depicting a rather decadent figure of a horned devil, pitchfork and all. Many of the antiques in the room are European, illustrating the fashion for wealthy Americans in the early 20th Century to travel the continent and bring back treasures. The sofa and the console table were designed by Mr. Dobbs specifically for the room. All additional furnishings are from the Greenbaum Interiors custom workshops, or the Greenbaum collection of antiques.

Located off of the main foyer, this petite gem would be used as a display area and less formal sitting nook, maybe where a cup of tea could be sipped or a book could be enjoyed. Comfortable and inviting, this space would display artwork, china and serving pieces; surrounding its guests with beautiful things. In keeping with the grandeur of the house, I decided to mix in traditional elements with some fresher patterns and textures, making the space transitional and timeless. The space is comprised of elements of whimsy, tradition, and a neutral and refreshing palate.

Th e Great Hall
The Great Hall is the largest, most daunting and dramatic room in the house. The architecture is so strong that it was essential to balance it with glorious colors and large scale pieces of furniture. This room was torn out of a sixteenth century English country manor house and transplanted here to Morristown. The Tudor theme was already set in place by the rustic beamed walls, soaring ceilings and gothic stained glass windows. I was pleased to discover the atmosphere of the room is further enhanced with a friendly resident ghost. Despite all this drama and historic excitement, I wanted to create a warm and welcoming room encouraging everyone to come in and spend some quality time. I took a serious space and filled it with joyful colors, uplifting music, living trees and flowers to permeate the room with redolent fragrance. This is a perfect room for large scale entertaining.

Glynallyn Living Room
The M. Frederick Glynallyn Living Room concept was designed around the conceptual needs of a growing family of five who would desire a family-friendly, yet sophisticated main living area suitable for daily family living activities, more formal entertaining, and the needs of a small personal home office. To this end, we wanted to craft a space that is clean and bright while still managing to maintain and showcase the architectural magnificence of the room. We wanted the room that could stand up to the aesthetic and physical demands of a black tie fundraiser that would also be a warm, welcoming family space, reflecting the sophisticated equestrian, and art addictions of our conceptual family. In the end, we wanted to design a room that is the embodiment of our “Elegant Living for Everyday Life” lifestyle theme.

Hidden Respite
Hidden Respite was inspired by the space itself hidden near the grand entertaining area and proximity to the gardens. It was once a covered porch but windows were installed by the owners to be used year round. Removing windows allowed the space to flow between interior and exterior and to show the lovely landscaping. The designer imagined a special place the homeowners could ‘get away’ from the formality of Glynallyn within their own home to enjoy the gardens or sit by a cozy fire in privacy. The brick walls, terracotta flooring, dark beams and stone fireplace create an intriguing space as a secret respite. A bass stone relief on the wall is reminiscent of medieval period and adds to the mystique of the room. The location adjacent to the gardens helped to visualize a comfortable and natural room as a special private space. To better utilize the room, sheer motorized shades give full view of the grounds as well as ability to choose to open the space to the outside or not. Natural colors and fabrics create a casual space with warm amenities as a haven from the activity of the home.
“A quiet, comfortable h ideaway surrou nded by nature’s beauty is a respite of peace, harmony and tranquility.”

Papyrus Home Design Katja van der Loo
Th e Greenery
The design philosophy of Katja van der Loo is to create classic interiors, regardless of style, that will stand up over time. Spaces are shaped to embody the atmosphere we wish to create, cumulatively reflecting the essence of who we are and the spirit of the people who live in them. Color and light act as essential, yet subtle, backgrounds. The space should “live,” evolving and growing with one’s travels, art, photography and meaningful treasury of life experiences. It should allow one to freely change composition, introduce new ideas and eclectically blend different furniture in a way that, for reasons not completely explicable, make perfect sense in its context. The Greenery has beautiful architecture with wooden carvings and leaded glass doors and windows that truly make the space. To highlight and not detract from the room Katja chose to keep the furnishings simple and light. The space was originally a “greenery” or mudroom, as the room opens to the gardens. At some point, it was also used as a chapel. Now it is a quiet space to be creative.

Nature On Tap
Inspired by the 400 year old beer cask head and our deep regard for honoring English Tudor architecture, our design celebrates old world hospitality with warmth and elegance. Within the stylish passageway, Glynallyn guests may be offered English ale, served in lovely etched glassware from the antique cask. In honor of Morris & Company’s 150th Anniversary, we chose fabrics from the archive collection, authentically English designs, newly interpreted with timeless appeal. The embroidered drapery fabric is based on the bed-hangings in Morris’s bedroom at Kelmscott Manor. Brer Rabbit, first registered in 1882, was used to create the skirt around the table finished in an Italian lime-based Marmorino plaster. From top to bottom, decorative finishes add timeless elegance and luminous drama. Decorative paints and glazes produce a beautiful, reflective finish on vintage plaster walls and ceilings that now shimmer as the morning dew. The plaster is enhanced to emulate aged ornamental wood, providing a framework for finely hand-painted elements, and the hardwood floor is embellished with a wood stain decorative inlay. For a touch of whimsy: our original design hand painted Bottoms Up pillow and tree of life wall hanging, “Drink to the days that are.” William Morris.
“A genuine h om e reflects wh o you are, naturally.”

Our vision for the Summer Pavilion was to make our room stand out from the darkness of the rest of the home and enhance its original character while giving it a fresh look for 2012. The color palette of cream and Mediterranean blue became the base for the hand-made Moorish inspired lattice stencil. In the foreground of the room, a double-sided settee rests. Across from the fireplace, we placed a pair of luxurious shearling chairs designed by Jean-Michel Frank of Hermès on either side of a distressed parchment finish console. To the right of the fireplace, we have designed a dry bar utilizing our custom cabinet line. The bay window area boasts a custom designed sofa with luxurious pillows in the Mediterranean blue and cream Ikat patterned fabric. Additional seating is provided by using branch inspired side chairs at the dining table with an X design base. It is distressed in a parchment gray finish and is one of the most sought out designs. The table is set using Hermès porcelain in the Siesta Island pattern, flatware and St. Louis Crystal. We are so honored to be working with world renowned Hermès for this show house. Hermès’ history of excellence is unparalleled. Appréciez!

An Affair at Glynallyn
One would expect, in as gracious and formal of a home as Glynallyn, to find the dining room set up for a formal affair, yet today it is designed for an engaging and intimate celebration lunch. Different from the Tudor styled mansion, the dining room is unique with its Georgian influences, especially in the details of the beautifully detailed mantel and carved plaster ceiling. A Gustavian influenced color palette of muted blues and soft toasts is subtle yet graciously complements the details of the room. Our furniture arrangement suggests how a large dining room can be used to entertain in a more informal way than the typical formal dining room setting. The room features smaller intimate dining tables in the center and a larger dining table in the leaded muntined bay window. The tables are classically designed by Jeffrey B. Haines’ “Signature Style of Entertaining” and display a beautiful collection of china and glassware. Our dining room comfortably welcomes the guests into a few moments of a gentile sophisticated daytime celebration.
“Dining is always a celebration.”

Lady Allen’s Bower
It was customary during the years Glynallyn Castle was being built (1913-1917) to have a special room for the lady of the house called a Bower - a private space to withdraw, read, embroider, or focus on an interest. Today, Grace Allen would be a strong, creative woman with style, imagination, and knowledge about creating a beautiful home after decorating the 66 rooms in Glynallyn. She would heed the words of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a prominent novelist and feminist during the late 1800s, who helped pave the way for women to have their own careers. Allen would be a career woman, an Interior Designer, who creates beautiful rooms. The juxtaposition of the room between the kitchen and dining room is the perfect workplace for a home office - while tending to her family in the kitchen, she can make business calls at her desk, and when not entertaining, the dining room table is a perfect workspace to lay out projects and meet with clients. The room’s varying shades of mocha brown accented with lemon yellow and the architectural details and warmth of the upholstered walls add a modern day elegance.

Th e Grande Gourm et
The “Grande Gourmet” Glynallyn Kitchen and Butler’s pantry was designed to incorporate the style and sophistication of the old world castle with modern amenities and functionality. The main kitchen cabinetry is richly detailed with hand staining and glazing for antiquity. The ornamental valances over the sink and range feature carved keys to create drama. A large central island offers vast counter space for working and cooking. An attached faux driftwood top, made of concrete, provides a less formal seating area. The morning room features a built-in hutch and buffet finished in a rich armor colored enamel with light distressing that fit in with the charming imperfections of the home. The sumptuous settee and large square table create an inviting area to enjoy a meal or catch up on daily tasks. Custom window coverings soften and warm the space. A modern convenience for any large scale home is a separate kitchen for food preparation. The Butler’s pantry is mainly appointed for staff and caterers. A creamy, hand-glazed finish on the cabinetry and the subtle wall color offer a monochromatic atmosphere. It adjoins the main kitchen, dining room, and front hall for ease of flow and entertaining.

Into Blu es
What’s hip, modern, and blue all over? “Into Blues” - A Jazz Club! Inspired by Turkish patchwork rugs and a Lee Jofa Ikat fabric, “Into Blues” is the homeowner’s personal jazz club. The rugs are made from salvaged pieces of old carpets, which have been over-dyed with vibrant colors, then stitched together to create a unique new piece– no two pieces are ever the same. The Lee Jofa Ikat is a printed linen, full of vibrant color and natural texture. The colorful accent textiles used throughout the space all take their cue from the ethnic inspirational pieces. The dramatic colors are counterbalanced with a variety of natural linens and flaxes. In addition to the textiles, the room is interspersed with a variety of surfaces: furniture pieces built from salvaged wood (some from old Shanghai factories), a concrete top on the cocktail table, metal chairs, and even a few pieces of Lucite. It’s fresh and natural, with a modern twist, that gives a nod to the classics, sometimes re-purposed, always discriminating, with a few shots of ethnic and the blues!!!

(Old English for Linger)
Steeped in history, this charming landing inspired us to create a space to linger. On the ground level, relax in the large and comfortable William and Mary chair. The beautiful English antique chest is in the style of the day with intricate carvings and details. The floor painting echoes the ceiling medallion and adds visual interest and pattern. The fabric panels with my silkscreened logo set within the ‘window’ openings, provides a pop of color. The bench adds further color with some bright pillows and an embroidered pillow that also highlights the medallion. Climbing the stairs to the mid level, the bas-relief figures on the wall are highlighted with a subtle glaze. On the stair landing, a simple Chinese cabinet with a fabulous floral arrangement is a testament to the family’s travels. Even a small landing can become a place to linger and enjoy the finer things in life. Arriving at the top of the landing, the intricacy of the plaster medallion is also emphasized with a subtle glaze.
“Th e total beauty of th is space is truly an enticem ent to linger!”

Take Five
(after Da ve Bru beck’s famous jazz recording)
Five minutes, five beats, five hours in this fabulous refuge from his demanding roles, our man of the moment retreats to his space filled with the colors of the jazz that inspires his soul. Here he can kick back and relax on the supple leather sofa, watching the view, watching the flat screen, watching the minutes tick by…1,2,3,4,5. Juxtaposed against the medieval architecture of this grand room, with its high ceiling, whimsical stained glass, and hand-carved wood, BHE presents the conversion to a modern sanctuary with its hand-crafted pine desk, solid oak console table, and lit black lacquered bookcase / flat screen TV console. The fully renovated bathroom features a light grey lacquered vanity with granite top. All the cabinetry is designed by our architects and custom made in our local wood shops. Hand rubbed leathers, velvets imported from France, zebra prints and menswear textiles, a unique mix of industrial materials, lucite, art and objects collected from travels across the globe fills the room with color and texture. Add to the mix state of the art electronics, which raises the environment to the level of perfection.

Art in Arch itecture & Design
A collection develops over time. It will grow quickly in some directions and more slowly in others as ideas mature and evolve. That is the beauty of it; it’s a living thing. Attached to it are emotions and memories. Collecting is started on a whim or a want, and - pun intended - there is an art to it. Forget all the garage sale rubbish at the strip malls and stop purchasing the landfill fodder in catalogues. Buy just one good, if not great, piece each year - the best possible piece you can afford. Glynallyn offers the opportunity to exhibit a collection of design elements that compliment its structure and comment on its history, i.e. the oft repeated Tudor Rose. Raphael’s “Delle Loggie...”, Rome, 1772, based on 16th century paintings in the Vatican’s famed vault ceiling Loggia, are in a gallery overlooking Glynallyn’s vault ceiling Great Hall. An Audubon “American Crow” pays homage to Mr. Allen’s ‘Old Crow’ Kentucky bourbon fortune. One-of-a-kind 1920’s fashion watercolors reflect an era embraced by Glynallyn’s owners. 17th through 19th century antique botanicals echo the vast gardens. This collection of original drawings, engravings and lithographs creates an integral ensemble displaying a harmony of architecture, painting, sculpture and design. It offers a glimpse into a life of style in every sense of the word.
“Great collections don’t just happen; th ey are built, each piece a block– som e a cornerstone– of an expanding concept. It is a living th ing.”

Th e Messieurs’ Retreat
The design inspiration for “The Messieurs’ Retreat” reflects the tastes of two Gentlemen. The handsome couple met at Princeton and have been together for twenty-six years. The room is influenced by their travels to Europe and especially Savile Row in London. The Gentlemen’s eclectic and sophisticated tastes are represented by the artwork that is displayed on the faux lizard leather wallpaper with black lacquered trim. The room is designed as a sanctuary for relaxation, libation, and meditation. The selection of haberdashery fabrics include fine wools, silks, and velvet that provides a masculine environment that is both striking and seductive. The charcoal grey wall-to-wall carpet unifies the space. An exuberant and rare piece of multicolored onyx makes up the custom backlit headboard along with the luxurious bed linens and hangings set off the sleeping alcove. Upon entering the room, there is a well-appointed, mirrored bar with honey onyx and crystal. The two wool glen plaid covered, custom chaise lounges are reflected in the Deco-inspired mirror covered fireplace. In the dressing area, sits a unique chest of drawers covered in leather with nail-head trim. To the left, is standing a custom, beveled floor mirror in which to make sure all is in place before a night on the town.

A Woman’s Ca ve
Move over men, it’s the women’s turn now. Contrary to the man cave, a woman’s cave is a room where a woman can nurture herself by reenergizing, recharging and relaxing. The room is invigorated with colors of raspberry that are sprinkled sparingly to subtly energize the cream palette of the room. The woman’s cave is abundant with plush textural fabrics that are delicious for the eyes. Lounge in the sumptuous ivory wool Chippendale Style sofa, which pays homage to the rich English history of the mansion. Additional seating of a tufted wing chair accompanied by a petite lounge chair, are upholstered in a diamond velvet and linen background fabric. The chairs are the perfect place to sit with a friend and enjoy the warmth of the fireplace. Place a cup a tea atop the round ottoman that is upholstered in a cut-velvet damask fabric. An elegant writing desk and chair is designed with a soft, serene, and refined style that brings comfort at the end of a long day. The show stopping silk embroidered floral panels with spectacular hues of raspberry and citrus will beautifully frame the windows, but will not intrude on the lovely stained glass windows.

Silver Anniversary
Our master bedroom palette of silver, charcoal and cream subtly suggests a Silver Anniversary Celebration. After 25 years, a couple would have acquired not only beautiful memories of their lives together, but also the time-loved furnishings that they would have purchased. Our Silver Anniversary Master Bedroom reflects and honors the past with a welcomed nod to the future, by updating their traditional furniture and refreshing their bedroom with a contemporary palette and accents. By placing the bed on the bathroom wall we are accomplishing two things; creating a dramatic focal point with the beautiful half-tester canopy bed, as well as allowing circulation and flow into the adjacent dressing room. Wrapping the room in a silver gray will unify the space and act as the perfect backdrop for the lush fabrics and furniture. However, the ceiling, which is the fifth wall and so expansive, should have attention brought to it. By installing the silver and cream ornamental arabesque wallcovering, we created interest while repeating the Tudor motif of Glynallyn.
“A celebration of lo ve that is as brigh t and enduring as silver.”

17 Going On 30
Like every other young girl who wishes she were older, the daughter of the house can’t wait to grow up and have an apartment of her own. Until then, our “17 going on 30” young lady enjoys all the comforts of home in this sophisticated, chic bedroom complete with her own fireplace and private bath. A subtle play of pattern, soft pastels, and iridescence shimmer throughout the room. The teen obligatory prerequisite of purple is present in the softer tone of lavender. The fireplace wall is draped in a beautiful color of French lilac. To accentuate the color and focal point wall, a magnificent marble has been added to compliment and add excitement to the fireplace surround and hearth. The walls are wrapped in an off-white grasscloth with shimmering silver accents peeking through. ‘Everything old is new again’ in the play of pattern on pattern in the beautiful bedding, repeated in the headboard and again in draperies. The grandeur of ‘Glynallyn’, the house and its many stained glass windows inspired the unique patchwork design of the headboard. The headboard’s playful use of color, pattern and the dimension of the tufted panels offers a new stained glass interpretation for our Princess.

Sir William’s View
The inspiration for Glynallyn was Compton Wynyates Castle in England. Sir William Compton, owner and friend of Henry VIII must have enjoyed such views as this. The surroundings are loosely interpreted in this mural, but the castle’s details and gardens are true. The soft, limited palette helps create the illusion of receding space, which is a useful way to address a confined area such as this. Colors of umbers and siennas feel old world and the green gives it a modern twist. The ancient looking candle bracket picks up some Glynallyn details and adds to the castle ambiance.
“Fresh, elegant interpretation in paint for today’s lifestyles.”

La Petite Suite
Every client is unique. Their lifestyle and personality are theirs and theirs alone. Years of experience, combined with strong intuition, help me give my clients what they want, even if they are not sure themselves. Home should be where comfort meets style, where luxury and elegance are warm and livable. When the project is complete, I want the client’s personality to shine through. Lovely and charming, the home should still look lived in. It should not look like a decorator just installed it. La Petite Suite is inspired by my travels through Europe, Asia, and Africa, especially, in this case, by the beautiful small hotels I’ve encountered in Paris where luxury and comfort prevail. Glynallyn invites the harmonizing of classic contemporary and elegant French styles. Opulent fabrics, rich cut velvets, soft leathers, and textured solids combine to create a space that invites you to relax and pamper yourself. The serene palette of azure blue, taupe, and gray add to the luxurious ambiance. It is a suite inviting and comfortable.

Th e Map Restorer’s Keep
The concept of our design is that of one that takes in the unique architectural feel of the space. The arched, trussed ceiling and unique wood treatments coupled with the faux skylight detail inspired me to think of repose from the vast public home below; a place to escape, contemplate, and even meditate while indulging in a hobby fueled by great passion: map restoration, researching and even the creating of innovative display. Today, we can enter an address and have our route created for us. The maps of the past were documents of history as well as social migrations. The restorer’s keep integrates the warmth and protective qualities of the environment and even makes a play on the ship-like feel when one traveled the world centuries ago by boat. Our color palette of neutral taupe and cream with hints of lavender harkens to the colors in the leaded glass windows throughout the house while creating a sense of peace within the Keep, so called because it “keeps” one ever present and calm, stimulated and protected all at the same time. My thought is to have one enter this room and feel a calm repose while sensing the unique tasks being undertaken in this sumptuously private work space.

Under th e Silver Moon
My favorite place on the earth is at the beach, with the waves crashing at my feet. Smelling the salt air and walking barefoot on a sandy beach. Every summer since as far back as I can remember I have always spent time at the beach. So many fond memories...of building sand castles and falling asleep under the silver moon and stars, watching the refection on the waves coming to shore and dreaming of castles and princesses and knights of another time. The princesses’ nursery “Under the Silver Moon” was born from all those blissful summers and many trips to moon lit beaches and sandy shores around the world. I loved the architectural detail of this space, the sloped ceilings, brick fireplace and romantic window balcony. What a perfect setting for the young princess. The bathroom was a challenge I refused to ignore. I knew the space could be transformed into a tranquil oasis, all it needed was a little love, artistic creativity and beautiful tile! The play closet is a bit of whimsy, a tribute to Mr. Allen’s “Angel Fish”.

Tudor Glam
Most of my inspiration for this bathroom came from the beautiful architecture of this home. I felt the space needed to be fresh and glamorous. I chose the check pattern floor for its classic style and the texture that it brings to the space. The color palette for the wall finishes were taken from these tiles. A sheen was given to the dark ceiling to have a reflective quality and the walls remain lighter to keep the space fresh and have contrast with the cabinetry. A rich walnut with burled center panels was chosen for the cabinetry. The cabinet doors have multiple panels that you will see in the architecture throughout the interior of the home. The linen cabinet has a Gothic arch top with a leaded motif antique mirror as the center panel. This Gothic arch you will see repeated throughout this home. The crown detail on this cabinet resembles brackets on the exterior and the marble top gives it a unique feel. You will see a lot of beautiful antique mirror being used here. It gives the space a more glamorous feel with a contemporary flare. Crystal hardware for the cabinetry was used and crystal for the light sconces and chandelier. With a lot of cool colors here, I felt the space needed a punch of color. You can see this in the draped fabric and a few other accessories throughout this space.

Th e Glynallyn Collection Collecting art is a love affair. It nourishes our soul and brings joy and memories to our lives. The breathtaking creations of the artists that I represent at Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery are my inspiration for the design of “The Glynallyn Collection.” A lighted glass creation by Barry Entner shines from the ceiling, while paintings in oil, pastel and watercolor of flowers and sunsets and bucolic landscapes enrich the oak paneling of the second floor hallway. Blown art glass is displayed in an ornate lighted cabinet and select pieces of sculpture made of glass and bronze sit atop pedestals which have been carefully placed along the hallway. The Glynallyn Collection is a celebration of the talent of local artists who bring beauty to the mansion and give visitors the opportunity to own a piece of art from the collection for their home or office.

Th e Singles Suite
The Singles Suite is all about creating the perfect guest room. We envisioned a room that is comfortable for multiple guests. The Pointillist painting style wallpaper with intertwining branches allows for rhythmic movement and creates a perfect backdrop for the two Artisan Poster beds, which sport full headboards and dramatic horizontal stripes. The combination exudes a feeling of warmth and comfort. The Libretto style chairs and ottoman flank the teal tiled fireplace, allowing for guests to relax, read and stay warm. The light colored rug, whimsical fabrics and classic wood furniture combine to produce a room feeling rich in organic texture. This is a truly sophisticated guest room where visitors can feel at home, whether they are friends, family or your own children returning from college.

Glynallyn Drawing Room Drawing Room is the modernization of Withdrawing Chamber. Family and friends would withdraw to this room to engage in various leisure activities, from playing games of chess and conversing to reading together and simply enjoying a glass of Merlot. The inspiration for this room is derived from the English Tudor style and the surrounding rural atmosphere, by using a masculine, yet welcoming combination of fabrics, patterns and furniture. These include a paisley and plaid Scottish velvet pattern on the walls and draperies, chairs with pheasants printed on linen, mahogany tables and a yew wood English secretary. The richly colored interior creates a club style atmosphere for entertaining which defines the warm character of the room. This sophisticated look is accentuated by the decorative objects from the Orient. The window treatments consist of a complex serpentine cornice from which falls a gathered valance with goblets, pleats and cascades, finished with heavy bullion fringe and elegant tassels and ropes. The grace and weight of this glorious drapery complement the proportions of the room and its decorations.

Th e Voyager’s Lou nge The Voyager’s Lounge is a place to end the day, to unwind or to entertain. The second floor terrace reflects the well-travelled adventurer who has collected things from years of exploration and visits to exotic and far off places. The lush and exuberant outdoor space is layered with brilliant, jewel-toned hues, patterns, textures and plants. The 21st century sensibility is evident in the use of the reclaimed, recycled and antique. A green wall, architectural artifacts, contemporary furniture and antique sculpture combine with unusual plants to make the terrace an outdoor oasis that is both hip and historic.

Th e Enchanted Castle Imaginarium
What better way to stimulate your child’s imagination than with an enchanted castle playroom guarded by a silver knight! Nothing is more powerful than a child’s mind and this playroom will provide endless hours of creative activity. The colors of the playroom keep with the regal theme of the castle with gunmetal plum and soft lavender. The floor has a lush plum carpeting with silver metallic threads glowing with warmth to keep the young royals feet warm in the drafty castle. The lavish carpet leads up to the King and Queen’s throne carved into a platform and embellished with crystal jewels. The throne is strategically placed for the best view of the hand-built Marionette Stage, which is framed in rich, luxuriously textured fabrics and adorned with jewels. A mirrored vanity allows the Queen to admire herself (“mirror, mirror on the wall...”), along with the other noble visitors. There are costumes and play clothes for all sorts of adventures, along with toys to inspire those precious young minds. The walls are hand-painted to create the look of stone with a turret or two placed along the wall. The magical room is adorned with a crystal chandelier sparkling throughout and finishing the room with a richness and splendor of a royal court. What a way to ignite a child’s imagination!

Th e Bau haus Room
The Bauhaus Room was inspired by the movement of the same name, which began during the early 1900s. This movement is characterized by geometric design, respect for practical material and its economic sensibilities. This unique transitional space provided the perfect backdrop for creating a comfortable respite for a new graduate entering the workforce for the first time. The estate’s proximity to public transportation coupled with the eco-mindedness of today works nicely with the design philosophy applied in this room.

Entré Rouge
The meaning of “Enter Red” is to introduce our interior design students who are members of the premier interior design community of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). The students who worked on this room come from the five colleges where Interior Design is a major. The colleges represented are: Kean University, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Berkeley College, Brookdale Community College, and Raritan Valley Community College. The students were under the guidance of ASID members Robin LaMonte, Gwen Nagorsky, and Jeffrey Brooks. Robin is the Student Affairs Committee Chair, Gwen is the professional liaison to NJIT, and Jeffrey is the professional liaison to Kean University. We chose the red theme because red is the color of ASID’s logo. We wanted the guests to see how talented our future interior designers are and to come away with an appreciation of how current designers mentor the next generation.

Gu est Suite Kitch en Retreat
Whether for an overnight visit or extended stay, the Guest Suite Retreat Kitchen is a sophisticated living environment that is as hard working as it is aesthetically pleasing. The space is small and cozy enough for a couple’s respite, yet large enough for entertaining larger groups in its own right. While still paying homage to Glynallyn’s sophistication, the Guest Suite is purposefully distinct in its concept and aesthetic. The color palette and materials of the kitchen are both crisp and clean with various colors and textures. Cabinetry details are subtle and refined. The walls of the space were purposefully extended to even out all existing protrusions while also allowing the pantry storage, dish hutch and refrigerator to recess into them gracefully. An elegant arch encompasses the handmade LaCornue Range, Hood and Cabinetry. The space has an open floor to the adjacent living area which provides a modern living approach. All of which produces a space that is the perfect combination and juxtaposition of light airiness and cozy warmth - sleek sophistication and traditional familiarity in which all are welcome in a gracious yet convivial atmosphere for the grand home’s guests.

La Suite d’In vité
Glynallyn was always known for hosting many guests over the years and with that in mind, we wanted to create the ultimate guest suite for a couple or a family. Our inspiration came from the wonderful exposures in our room and the lovely windows that could be found in a French or English Chateau. We chose to highlight our room with Brunschwig and Fils fabrics in the green and blue tones and to have a mixture of both traditional and transitional style furniture. The fabrics are both whimsical and updated in style. We believe the Glynallyn family would have wanted to create a sophisticated, yet comfortable environment that encompasses a welcoming feeling.

Suite Escape
The inspiration for the guest suite bathrom, Suite Escape, comes from the spirit of The Glynallyn Mansion itself. When Mr. George Marshall Allen built Glynallyn in 1913, he did it with the thought of having a beautiful retreat for his family and friends. The guest suite and adjoining bathroom emulate Mr. Allen’s inspiration nearly 100 years later. Artisan installation of marble, ceramic and mosaic tiles reflect the craftsmanship that was put into the original structure. A freestanding soaking tub, simply elegant console vanity and clean line chrome fixtures modernize without compromising the architectural integrity. This bathroom truly is a Suite Escape.

Th e Tudor Rose
The Tudor Rose is the traditional floral heraldic emblem of England and the Tudor dynasty. The symbol, found throughout Glynallyn, ornamenting ceilings and walls, is the centerpiece of Patina’s decoratively painted stair hallway. Patina has designed a pattern of intertwined branches that surround brilliantly colored Tudor Rose medallions. The walls of the hall were painted with a verdigris Brushed Suede finish that serves as an atmospheric background for the hand-painted trellis pattern. Doors and floor moldings were wood grained and varnished to reflect Glynallyn’s beautiful wood paneling. The scenic folding screen and art work adorning the walls was painted for the Mansion in May by Marilyn White and Kathryn Sandelli. Sconces, chandeliers, shelf, and tapestry rods were created by metal sculptor, Larry White. Thank you, Jim O’Keefe of Enhance Painting for preparing the space for Patina and Lori Apgar, Tommie Freda, Donna Dwyre of Cove Carpet for providing the carpet for the staircase.

Woodland Tranquility
To create a dramatic entrance into the backyard of Glynallyn we have transformed a once barren space into an area of tranquility and serenity. A pea gravel path leads you through woodland plantings of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. The under planting is highlighted with seasonal perennials and groundcovers. A bubbling urn is the focal point of the garden. The walkway surrounds this feature giving the visitor a 360 degree view of the garden. Stone benches are placed along the walkway giving one a place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of water and nature.

Grace’s Lookout
Named for the original lady of the estate. We have re-imagined this space, in good faith, to re-capture the elements that made this a favorite spot for the ladies, during their evening perambulations. It is believed that from this vantage point, one would have been able to see the steeples of St. Elizabeth, as well as providing beautiful views of the iris garden in the valley and a great vantage point to take in the exquisite architecture of the mansion. We have brought back the sound of trickling water with a pondless fountain and our simple stone bench replaces the carved stone bench that once awaited at the bottom of the descent. The patio area and landing have been constructed with irregular bluestone flagging, and moss has been harvested from the site and planted between the flagstones. It is believed that this would have been the type of surface in the space when it was originally in use. Shade-loving plants help to soften the large stone structure and provide a bit of seclusion from the upper terrace. We have incorporated some variegated Irises, as the Iris once figured prominently in the landscape and was obviously one of Grace’s favorites.

Gateway to th e Glen
Set within the lavish grounds of the Glynallyn Mansion, natural blue stepping stones guide the way from Lookout Garden to raised the Corner Garden. This garden path is the terrain whereby wedding parties and movies were set in history almost a century ago. These famous grounds are brought to life again with the floral ambience of Roses, Cat Mint, Lavender and other appropriate plantings for an English Garden. Lined with Sea Daffodils and fresh green grass, the path historically led to an ornate wrought iron doorway which still remains in an unaltered condition. Only a few steps away the soothing sounds of the stream can still be heard, yet not seen, within the nearby glen. Enjoy the gardens and pass through history!

Th e Lady’s Garden
The high tree canopy and green understory of the surrounding forest sets the mood for a restful retreat. The existing antique sculpture in the far corner inspired the creation of a garden get-away for the lady of the house to de-stress or entertain friends. Additional inspiration came from early 20th century garden designer Vita Sackville West’s ‘White Garden’ at Sissinghurst Castle, in England, where white blooms, amid varying shades of green foliage, provide a comforting palette that calms the mind and pleases the senses. Visual interest from variegated foliage lasts throughout the season. A bluestone patio provides a sitting area from which to enjoy the woodland view while listening to the soothing trickle of water from the nearby fountain. This spot also offers the best vantage point from which to view the magnificent architecture of the mansion. A raised bed constructed with a low fieldstone wall protects the roots of the ancient Oak trees from planting injury.
“A garden sh ould summon feelings of peace and serenity.”

The Potted Garden Beth P. Riley
Woodland Reverie
“I’ve been fascinated by the woods and shade gardens since childhood.” The woodland glen that embraces the gardens of Glynallyn transports Beth back to her childhood home and her family’s farms, where dappled sunlight peeking through thick woodland canopies beckoned children for adventure. With Woodland Reverie, Beth again celebrates layered foliage and the dramatic play of light and shadow in a natural setting. She creates silent detail in the shade through the use of diverse plant textures, leaf shapes and hues of green. Upon descending stone staircases leading to the garden path, we feel an immediate sense of hushed protection. This sunken garden room invites us to slow down and stroll, while offering our eyes and souls a welcome opportunity to pause and reflect. The refreshing view of a woodland glen and Beth’s robust plantings contrast with the formal architectural setting of this walled garden. With her love of historic gardens, Beth has found designing a Woodland Reverie on the terrace of this 1917 English Tudor castle an inspiration and a treasure in our own community.

A Living World Awaits
A pioneer in regenerative design, Back to Nature has more than 13 years of experience in the creation of exquisite landscapes that fuse inspired site design with the values of regenerative landscapes. Now, the team at Back to Nature is bringing our core practices to the rear terrace at Glynallyn. Our plan brings forth new and exciting features, sure to entice everyone: Living Walls and Living Art. Our living walls feature live, beautiful plant material suspended in a self contained system. We’ve designed and constructed several examples of our living art collection to show the possibilities for any space. Our showcase pieces include three living walls, a living chandelier, elegant furniture, and more. Through use of our living art, we will transform the rear terrace to a beautiful outdoor room, where one is immersed into a sea of colors and textures. Back to Nature’s ongoing mission to bring the ecological narrative to everything we do is illustrated in our design. From living art to beautiful plantings, we are the sustainable choice.
“Carefully and Artfully integrating th e ecological components in every design we create is our main goal.”

A Garden of Seasons for all th e Senses
My vision for this project is a bright, elegant, formal garden area with a variety of pretty perennials that one can enjoy from spring right through to the fall season. The rich, green boxwood provide the formal lines and a perfect backdrop, which even in the gloomiest winter season, always are a pleasure to look at. My ultimate goal in the design would be for the homeowner to bask in the palette of colors and changing bloom times and to also enjoy the wonderful scents that are given off. From the nepeta, the peonies, and roses to the Japanese snowbell, (a favorite of mine) it is a magnificent garden where your senses will become aware and the seasons will never be bare. Expect to see plenty of butterflies swooning over as they come and enjoy the fragrances. To further enhance the senses, the Garden Cottage has created both an elegant dining area and inviting sitting area, enveloped by the sounds of a trickling fountain. The marble topped table and classic aluminum chairs offer a comfortable and serene setting to have an alfresco lunch. A teak Chippendale bench is a great spot to take in the beauty of nature. All is illuminated by intricately detailed cast iron fireburners on pedestals and bountifully planted classic urns.

Garden in th e ‘Glyn’
“A garden is both personal and private, A place that is it’s own world, A place that engages the imagination as well as the senses. Among other things it is a passage to somewhere else – To the personal and shared past its scents evoke, To the distant places to which its forms allude.” -Robert Cording. This was the perfect opportunity for the creation of a romantic retreat which attracts dreamers and thinkers alike. Buried beneath years of neglect we revealed a garden tucked in the hillside that had been built in the 1920’s. This garden lay uncovered at the top of the glen with massive circular stone walls creating a grotto-like space. This space is all about Mr. Allen’s love for water. Adorned with an eclectic mix of garden ornaments, the grotto walls enclose this beautiful water feature and frame an incredible view of the glen.

Compton Court Garden
Welcome to Compton Court Garden, named after the original owner’s inspiration. We designed this garden to emulate both the Medieval and English Tudor Style home. As you drive up the stately tree-lined drive, you can’t help but notice the natural and rustic look of the newly installed stonework and plantings that anchor the corner of this castellated home. We have created brick pillars, which imitate the time-worn brick facade of the home and serve as a structural point between formal hedges of greenery, creating a false wall. Our pathways, laden with timeless cultured bluestone, will meander through our courtyard and take you to different rooms with stately and ornate stone statuaries within our garden. As you pass through the flowering trees, notice the beds adjacent to our chiseled bluestone walk, which will be filled with different herbs and color, evident of the medieval type garden plantings. We invite you to wander through Compton’s court to stop, rest, look and listen to nature, as you find yourself back in a time period of simplicity, organization, craftsmanship and old world gardening.
“Tim eless Old World Charm.”

Th e Knigh t’s Court
The Knight’s Court at Glynallyn welcomes visitors to this impressive Tudor style castle. The Court is presided over by three knights featured on the beautifully refurbished historic stone sculpture, which has been restored to its original location as the focal point at the end of the entry drive. The roundabout is edged by a low curb and is accented by stone piers adorned by ornamental metal fixtures inspired by the latches on the doors to the castle. A custom-made bench takes its cues from selected architectural motifs of the castle and provides a place to rest. The boxwood and pea gravel typical of English castle courtyards lend a restrained texture to this entry court. May flowers add to the charm.

Reflection Garden
The “Reflection Garden” is a quiet, peaceful place where visitors can stop and take a few moments to relax and enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the mansion and grounds. This garden was designed to be simple, rustic and natural so as to blend in with the beautiful woodsy grounds surrounding the mansion. There was evidence of a prior garden and that existing, but faint footprint, was used in the design. A walking path meanders through the garden around the mature trees and plantings encouraging visitors to take a leisurely stroll and perhaps sit for a minute on the comfortable bench. A bird bath was placed along the path near the center of the garden to attract birds and small creatures to this tranquil space. A cool and inviting spot to enjoy the beauty of the garden and the peaceful feeling it inspires. Those who find solace and pleasure in nature will feel right at home here!

Evening Artistry – Th e Allée at N igh t
Night has fallen as you catch your first glimpse of two stately lions standing guard over the winged entry gates to this medieval mansion. Traveling through the moonlight your eye is drawn by the vertical symmetry of Linden trees that flank the driveway leading you to your visual destination – the imposing, fortified front door – your entrance to enchantment. NatureScape Lighting transforms beautiful spaces into works of art - after dark. Our goal for this space was to combine a variety of traditional techniques with cutting edge “green” lighting technology to create a magical scene in concert with ecological sensitivities. LED purpose built fixtures, retrofits and high efficiency halogens all work together throughout spaces 4, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15. The technology used at Glynallyn will conserve 30%-80% of the energy that would be used with traditional methods. Additional savings were achieved by the use of astronomical timers that adjust automatically every 2 weeks. However, saving energy is only the beginning of the benefits of “green” lighting. Being dark sky friendly, protecting our landfills, ensuring lower maintenance and saving money are all important additional benefits achieved at Glynallyn and in all of NatureScape Lighting’s projects.

Tudor Rose Garden
“First it’s an illusion then it became a reality”, The Glynallyn Castle is a striking Tudor style architecture. Due to its beauty and meaning as an English motif, The Tudor Rose was selected as the namesake and centerpiece of this garden design. Arbors borrowing architectural features from the Glynallyn Castle, such as Tudor arches and the half-timbering, help to define the entry points into the garden. Natural stone pathways utilize stonework that is similar to that found on the façade of the castle. The main walkway provides ample room to support the guests anticipated to explore the space. Salvaged brick walkways are used to repurpose contrasting paver patterns. The plantings throughout the garden are accented with May-blooming perennial and annual flowers, which provide vibrant bursts of color throughout the month-long event. At the center of the space, guests step down into the sunken garden, featuring the signature Tudor Rose, with 360 degrees of bench seating, low-voltage lighting highlighting predominant site features along with five illuminated water jets arc over the center planting bed and splash into a seven foot diameter fountain found at the heart of the Tudor Rose.
