ORB BATH The Waterless Bathing Experience of Tomorrow In collaboration with: Kohler

future bathing design 2014

ORB BATH is a new and advanced way to bathe comfortably and sustainably, as a solution to the expanding issue of water shortage. Without water, gentle warm air flows around the body while the orbs cleanse you.


RESEARCH

Why waterless bathing By 2025, 1.8 billion people will experience absolute water scarcity, and 2/3 of the world population will be living under water-stressed conditions. In recent domestic water usage statistics, the toilet, washing machines and shower are the largest consumers of water in the home. There are some ways to prevent water waste such as a vacuum toilet, dry cleaning and bath-substituting lotion. However, with regard to these waterless cleaning methods, it doesn't fit in with most humans' sustainability. They are one-time use products, targeted for people with special mobility needs such as mountain climbers, military, pregnant women and the disabled. Developing alternative methods of preserving water is extremely significant to the well-being of the human race and to the future.

Photocatalyst Clean Technology Photocatalyst is a substance that after illuminated by light, can decompose organic compound, kill bacteria and remove odorous components that have reached its surface. Although photocatalyst participates in the chemical reactions, it is not consumed by the reaction itself. This process is similar to how a plant absorbs sunlight to create and release water and carbon dioxide. A photocatalyst provides the benefit of being able to work under visible light which is safer for the skin than harmful UV light.

Let orbs clean you The glowing orbs are a soft gel-like substance made of transparent silicone, coated with a photocatalyst film containing titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is activated by light. Through the chemical compound's reaction to light, the cleansing orbs break down organic substances such as oils, grime, fungus, bacteria and odors. The cleansing orbs' flexible form makes for more opportunity to touch human body effectively, along with each light orb illuminating blue light to create the reaction for decomposition and cleansing.When you immerse yourself, the areas in contact with the orbs will be cleaned.

Comfortable air flow comes out Considering that bathing is not just to clean oneself but is regarded as a relaxing activity, the design keeps a similar soothing environment of that of bathtub. The warm air from the bottom of ORB BATH flows around body to warm the cleansing orbs, and creates the atmosphere of taking a traditional bath.

Vacuuming vent The vacuuming vents help clean dust and hair in the ORB BATH and the substance will be vacuumed out and stored in the dust bag.


The control panel is located within arm's reach for the user to easily control the temperature, the range of air flow and cleaning time.

Usage process

1/ The user immerses him/herself in the orbs and places the light orbs around his/her body.

2/ Set up the cleaning settings.

3/ The light orbs detects the level of ambient blue light and then adjust the luminance.

4/ Orbs efficiently decompose organic substances and comfortable air flow blows around the user's body.

5/ At the end of the cleaning, the dust and hair left in the ORB BATH will be vacuumed.

6/ Cleaning is done.


MODEL MAKING

The body of ORB BATH model is a scale model in size 1:4, mainly made of foam. The challenge is to make the inner holes and the wave surface. In order to to have lively light effect, there is LED lights inside the model of the light orb.

PICKER ENDER

Picker Ender is a tableware set designed for children who has picky habit. This design combines a game and reward to delight kids and help get out of picky habit while children are young. Instead of being forced to eat unlovely but good food, the concept behind this set is to make children be willing to do.


Picky eater All young children are more-or-less picky about food. For many parents, it is a big problem when children don't like to eat a nutritious meal and it influences child growth and development.

Probe design & Investigation We designed a probe and sent it to a mother who had a daughter studying in an elementary school. The probe contained two bags. One was for parents and the other one was given to child. Each bag had several gargets and missions for a week. Parents needed to fill out the forms and took pictures of meals which included child's unlovely food and child's room and love. On the other hand, the child was asked to write a meal diary to rate each meal and show their preference.

Observation From our probe and observation, we found that 5 to 12 yearold children have ability to judgement and it's hard for parents to create a story to make children believe to eat dislikeful food. Even if they do due to parents' command, the amount they eat is not so much and they feel unfair and unhappy.

Initial idea In this project, we propose a new eating experience to enable picky eaters to eat unfamiliar foods regularly and happily. The initial idea is to turn eating unlovable food into a game.

Improve picky eating habit happily Picker Ender consists of a tableware set and reward cards. The tableware set is designed to make eating fun and decreases the bad feeling when eating unlovable food. Besides, this new eating experience includes parents' participation, children would feel accompanied and be willing to try healthy food. The reward cards also help children have a healthy diet regularly.

Fun eating The probability make eating more entertaining. Picker Ender combines the scenario of drawing straws which is believed as a fair and common way for choosing during a game. Each chopstick has a color strip. The corresponding colors on the chopsticks holder and the illusion plate determine how much food children need to eat. That makes every dinning time more interesting.

The secret of the plate The illusion plate is divided into six partitions and each of which looks like having different size, but actually they have equal space mathmatically. This design creates a illusion that there are a variety of eating portions and helps parents who wants their children to eat the same quantity of food no matter what part they are going to eat.

Keep a healthy diet The reward card concept encourages children to keep a healthy diet. Parents and children can discuss the reward together. If children follow the rules to eat food with Picker Ender and get enough points, children will get that reward. This helps children to get used to those healthy food and improve their picky eating habit in the long run.

2012 Youth Technology Expo (Industrial Design) - Third Prize

Equirun is a new jogging program for visually impaired and the leader. It changs today's guidance which needs a rope held in hands and causes uncomfortableness and less flexibility, in order to improve the interaction between both of joggers.


Background & Motive Sight loss can affect a person's independence because many daily activities rely on sight so much, not to mention that they go out to exercise. Due to the obstacle from sight loss, visually impaired become passive to sports and gradually it has negative effects on their health. Furthermore, since sighted people seldom have opportunity to interact with visually impaired, they couldn't know how inconvenience they have in real life and don't know how much they can do as well. As a result, based on the lack of exercise for visually impaired and poor understanding about sight loss for general people, we want to use sport as a connection to improve those situation, which helps with interaction between visually impaired and sighted people.

Insititution visit Taipei School for the Visually Impaired is a school of approximately 110 students, from kindergarten to senior high school. We visited it to generally know assistive devices and learning enviroment for visually impaired and also took part in their PE lesson to interact with students there. Because some of students were totally blind, each warm-ups step had to be clearly described and the PE teacher then helped correct their movement.

Observation After exercising with students suffering from sight loss and consulting the teacher, we found : 1) Visually impaired didn't have any idea about new movement, not to mention that they create one. They need other people to help with their movement. 2) Clear description and tangible information are important for them to realize new movement.

Why jog

Problem

Jog is an easier learning exercise and has less restriction on environmental factors. Therefore, it gives visually impaired more opportunity to go outside to exercise.

The body of the visually impaired are just like ours and have comparable exercise needs. We reckon jogging as a moderate exercise for them. While jogging, the visually impaired should be led by the other companion. In most of the current jogging programs designed for the visually impaired, they need a rope as an assistant equipment for guidance. Also, the guide has to focus on the direction they’re heading for and keeping the same posture at all times, in order to stay away from the obstacles posted around both of the joggers. This interaction between the two is not inefficient.

3D model We chose two of possible ideas to build 3D model and think about the details, the mechanism as well as material.

Prototype 1 We began to make some prototypes to examine ideas. We used acrylic tube which was put springs inside to make an retractable mechanism. Then in order to increase flexibility during jogging, we used globular connected part to connect belt part.


Testing 1 We invited visually impaired to use our first prototype. We found if the ball-shape joints weren't not locked to the belt, it was very unsafe for visually impaired and it might make them fall down.

Prototype 2 Based on the testing result, we used aluminum to make the retractable mechanism in order to improve the hardness, and also made comfortable belt to wear. Besides, we decided to create a sensing part so that visually impaired can get more information during jogging.

BLINDJOG Jog

concept design 2012 co-design with Wei-Tsung Shu

2012 iF concept award 2012 winner (top 100)

Blindjog is a sport product which makes it possible for the visually impaired to jog by themselves.


Problem Jogging is an easy-learning exercise which almost has no age and space limit. However, for visually impaired, due to vision loss, they must need a companion for safety. Furthermore, the reason why visually impaired feel discouraged might be the thought that will bother others or hard to cooperate with other unfamiliar sighted person or volunteers.

Solution Because of sight loss, visually impaired are sensitive to sound. Therefore, the idea is that visually impaired can follow the certain sound to head in the right direction. It is made up of three parts – earphones, two anklets and sensor plates, which make sure that visually impaired stay on the track and heading in the right direction. The system uses RFID technology and the Bluetooth technology.

How to use When two anklets comprising RFID tags are detected by sensor plate which contains RFID recevier, the sensor plate will send message to the earphone to tell visually impaired people if they are on the runway by giving a sound signal. The back speaker will make a sound with frequency so that other will know their location. Furthermore, When sensor plate detects a tag, the center of the sensor plate will light up at dawn or night.

REVOLVING CLOCK

cultural creativity design 2012

2012 National Palace Museum Cultural Creativity Design Competition - Merit Prize

Revolving Clock is inspired by the Revolving Vase in Yellow Glaze Famille Rose with Auspicious Motifs of Ch'ing Dynasty, which was one of nobles' treasured curios. Combined with the interesting structure and characteristic pattern of the Revolving Vase, Revolving Clock is a useful tool in present day as well as a representation with ancestor's wisdom and aesthetic.

Concept The Revolving Vase is composed of a outer vase and a inner vase. When the inner vase is spined, people can admire the changing pattern through the hollow shape of the outer vase. To Represent the enchantment of the Revolving Vase, the short hand of the Revolving Clock is designed to be a embossed surface with a hollow shape. As time goes by, the clock will have different pattern due to the movement of the short hand which makes the bottom pattern shown. In this way, people can not only read time but also appreciate the beauty and the value of the Revolving Vase.

Feature In order to reveal the aesthetic of the Revolving Vase, the short hand surface is embossed with a design pattern transformed from the delicate surface patterning of the Revolving Vase.

STRAW INCENSE

experimental design 2013 co-design with Chung-Ping Lai, Chiu Chi, Yu-Chun Wang, Kai-Lan Huang

Straw Incense is a new possibility for straw product and also a solution to reduce the amount of air pollution.


Concept Burning incense to worship god is an important tradition in Chinese Culture. People believe that smoke can send their wishes and respects to another world. However, burning incense will generate a great amount of exhaust, which causes air pollution. Is there any solution to have the best of both worlds? According to the observation, we found that the farmers compress straw into blocks for burning. We decided to integrate these two common features: “born to be burned” and “replacing the bamboo (the core of incense) with the straw.” In fact, burning Straw Incense is making natural fertilizers and reduce the amount of air pollution.

Experimental process At first, we immersed straws in essential oil and then burned them. Unfortunately, the burning didn't last long.

After that, we decided to mimic original making of incense but a bamboo stick was replaced with the a straw. Finally, the burning can last.

SILVER CHAIR

redesign 2010 co-design with Yuan-Ling Hsu

Silver Chair is a redesign furniture which is made up of waste things. Instead of much decoration, it shows the beauty of original materials to make people admire the entity of things and think about the possibility of waste.


Concept When objects couldn't fulfil people's desire, they would be discarded and turn into waste. However, those discarded things may lose original function, they still keep most of material characteristic. In light of it, we want to create a redesign chair which comprises waste things to make people see the entity of things and know the possibility of waste when they admire Silver Chair.

Feature Discarded wheel frames of bicycles, spongy cushion, a table and umbrella fabric are main materials of Silver Chair. To keep original characteristic of material, an arc is a principal shape of Silver Chair due to those materials's initial form such as a wheel frame. Moreover, we use a black rope woven through many existent small holes of wheel frames to create a pattern to make the chair more vivid.

BUS BEACON

bus system for blind people 2013

Bus Beacon is a bus system for the visually impaired. It is made up of two parts - an Auditory Braille Device and an Intelligent Blind Bus Stop. The system utilizes GPS technology and Bluetooth technology to help the visually impaired take a bus independently.


Problem Due to sight loss, there is lots of inconvenience for the visually impaired, not to mention that they would like to take a bus. Most of bus information are designed as visual type which is hard for the visually impaired to get. Moreover, they have difficulty identifying the bus service they need and thus they always need somebody's assistance.

Idea sketch According to the problem, the idea of the product is that the visually impaired can get information by an audio device and there is a bus stop which can let the bus driver know the bus service they need.

/ Intelligent Blind Bus Stop The Intelligent Blind Bus Stop assists to show bus number the visually impaired need on the LED display and thus the bus driver will know to stop to pick them up. Also, It connects to bus service network and from which the visually impaired can get real-time bus informaiton.

Classroom Finding is a new sign and map system inside buildings to help people find right palce quicker.


Background & Motive New semester is coming. As a freshman student, it is hard for them to find classrooms in National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) campus. We wondered what causes this kind of situation and it might be the same for vistors.

Observation To begin our research, we asked Noreen, one of our teammates who wasn't familiar with the campus, to be the very first testee. Starting at the front gate of the campus, we asked Noreen to find E2318 & T2-307 in serial, since these are two of the important classrooms in Design Department in order for us to find out what problems the new comers will encounter. Then we found Noreen had no problem to find the way outside buildings; However, when she walked into the building, she felt annoyed and disoriented and totally spent more than ten times time getting to T2307.

Research & Analyze We appied the A-E-I-O-U Framework in our testing, and found some problems in the list below: 01 The edge between T2 and E2 is unclear. 02 The sign is not clear and enough. 03 People do not know their location. 04 People will be in bad mood and waste time.

Idea development & testing When testees was asked to go to T2-307, they tended to figure out the relation between E2 and T2. However, there was no other map or sign inside buildings except classroom numbers, and thus they spent lots of time confirming their location and finding the classroom. Therefore, we thought maps and signs were the main key to prevent people from getting lost. The goal of the design was that the map and signs were easy to understand and notice. We came up with several ideas, and each of them will be examined by asking testees who were unfamiliar with the building in NTUST to find T2-307 from E2-318 without telling them there were some maps and signs around them.

Final design & testing After so many examinations, we discovered there were some commons among those testees when they read maps and signs, so those characterisrics helped with our final design. 1) People would find their location right now in the map. 2) People remember the way by intersections and landmarks. 3) People would memorize the rough location then follow classroom numbers to find the destination.

Sign design We designed signs with geometric shape and different colors to make information more organized so that people can quickly understand it. There are three kinds of shape to make up a sign : a circle, rectangles and triangles. The circle is set in the center and it represented which building the user is in right now. Extended rectangles from the circle indicate classrooms' direction inside the building. As for outer triangles, they point out the directions of other buildings.

Arrangement When the sign is at the important intersection, it is better to place it on the floor, or some people would misunderstand about orientation. On the other hand, if the sign is designed to indicate one or two directions, placing it on the wall would be better than on the floor because it is easier to attract users' attention.


Map design Based on previous ideas, the main purpose of the map design is to be simplified because most of people merely memorize the relative position of destination. As a result, the intersection in the map is shown as a big dot. Seperated classrooms are grouped into several sections, and passages are simplified as lines for people don't need to know how real path goes.

Arrangement People usually think there will be some informaiton near elevators and stairs, so it is better to put maps around those places. Besides, when people are in a insection, they would feel confused, and thus there should be a map. The map should be placed at the same height of man's eyes. When people are trying to find a classroom, they would seek classroom's number and some information on the wall. People pay more attention on the wall than the floor. Also, most of people think the information on the floor is signs instead of maps.

RORO JUG

RoRo Jug is designed to help pour water more smoothly.


Problem When people try to pour water from a jug full of water, it is not only hard to hold, but also hard to balance the jug and then water would easily slop over.

Concept RoRo Jug has a metal base which carries the weight of the jug and provides it with a rail to rotate, and thus the user can balance the jug and rotate the jug to pour water without great effort.

Feature RoRo Jug carries the water as its energy. When the jug is filled with water, due to gravity, no matter how to place it, it will keep standing. On the other hand, when there is no water in the jug, it is easy to fall down and it reminds the user to add water into it.

SMART is a learning device with an AMOLED screen for children to discover the world. It helps children seek creatures and give relative information. Children can record their findings and share them with their parents and friends. The user can also bend the device to operate and storage it.


Problem Nowadays, children prefer to stay inside to watch TV and play video games rather than to go outside. Besides, because of advanced technology, virtual things are becoming more vivic and they give children more visual and exciting experience, and thus it leads to a strange phenomenon that children know more unreal things than real life creatures.

Insight I think the role of technology is to assist people to know more about their world, not to take people away from our living environment. As a result, I think the best solution is to combine both advantages to help children discover the real world with more fun.

Idea sketch The goal of the design is that children can go outside to discover, so the ideal product would be a mobile device. Using the flexible characteristic of the AMOLED, the device can be wore on the wrist, but due to the size of the display and the material, it will make the user uncomfortable if he/she wear it for a long time, and thus the device is wore on the neck with a rope.


Scenario Children go outside to have an adventure with SMARTs. They heard a bird singinig, and then use the SMART to find its location and know the breed. They can also bend the SMART to zoom in and out to observe creatures. Finally, children can share their findings with their parents.

Prototype The prototype is made of paper and soft board to simulate the silicon material and to confirm the size and test the operation.


3D model After verifying the size and operation, it's time to think about the detail design such as how the hook attaches to the device and how many parts the device has. Besides, because silicon can't be painted, so color planing should be adjusted.

Searching

The index is designed as a plate. The central circle represents the fuction which is working right now, and the outer icons are five main functions : searching, sharing, library, photographing, files

This fuction can indicate the creature's location by the sound. Also, it will mark common animals and plants' communities on the screen so that children can explore easier.

The device can identify the creature in the camera and give information.

The user can share their findings to others.

Photographing

Files

The user can choose to take a picture or record a video when he/she finds something.

It keeps all pictures, videos and notes, and those files are categorized by theme or date.

Eason Chen is my favorite singer, and I tried to redesign his lastest Chinese album "?" because I thought the original design didn't match the album. Songs in this album gave people sad but peaceful feeling, and thus I used low saturated color and the combination of real and unreal images to express this album.
