For this year’s cover, we chose to feature some of the many players who have sent us their pictures: players so various they may seem connected by a love of music and nothing else. Don’t be fooled. We’ve learned over the last 8 years that the extraordinary Luna tribe is made up of individuals only disguised as ordinary people. In reality we are free thinkers confident enough to follow our hearts and instincts; artists who derive meaning from visual symbols that, like music, speak a universal language; intuitive women, men, children who know that small things actually are the big things; musicians who want our instruments to reflect our individuality; citizens of the world who believe we can make a difference and are involved in advancing the greater good in our own back yards; local anthropologists who honor and celebrate both our own culture and the cultures of others; human beings who value authenticity, who challenge the status quo. Here we like to think that the Luna tribe has been drawn together by instruments that merge form and function, that engage the senses and fire the imagination. The Henna Series incorporates our folk style cutaway body, pairing its mahogany sides and back with either a solid Cedar or solid Spruce top for tone that is uniquely pleasing and distinctive as the instrument’s show-stopping henna artwork.

A second henna design graces the abalone Luna logo on the gently curved maple headstock. Elegant and durable brushed nickel tuners provide smooth, precise adjustment. Complimenting the design effort is the inclusion of a state-of-the-art B-Band® preamp tuner with 3-band EQ that maintains the intimate and natural acoustic tonal quality of these fine instruments.

The henna design, a custom creation of renowned UK artist Alex Morgan, is faithfully reproduced through leading-edge laser etching - in effect, tattooing the intricate design into the instrument’s wood.

An oracle was a priest or priestess acting as a medium through whom advice or prophecy was sought from the gods in classical Greek antiquity. A person or thing regarded as an infallible authority or guide on something. Following Luna’s innovative tradition, The Oracle Series foresees the future of guitar architecture and takes solid top guitar ornamentation into uncharted territory.

The whole point of Zen practice is to become fully aware, here, now . . . to come home to and inhabit each precious, present moment. Luna’s Zen awakens players to their own true nature. The resonator guitar is a favorite of Hawaiian, Blues, Country, and Bluegrass players. In contemplating a design that would appeal to players in the vast geographical stretch from Hawaii to the Mississippi Delta to Nashville to the mountains of Appalachia, I asked myself “what common element would tie the diverse musical genres and geographies together?” Much of Luna’s inspiration is drawn from nature, and I discovered that different species of the lovely Magnolia tree are found in all of these areas...... thus a Magnolia blossom became the inspiration for for Luna’s Steel Magnolia.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1830-1833), also known as The Great Wave is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. Copies of the print are in many collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and The British Museum in London. Featured on the front of Luna’s 21” Great Wave Soprano and 23” Great Wave Concert, this masterpiece can now be in your own personal ukulele collection!

Luna’s Tattoo ukuleles’ designs are based on traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. The designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin. The patterns and layout were strongly geometric and there were many shapes and symbols which represented the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. The design on the two Tattoo ukuleles is primarily based on waves and sharks teeth, while the Honu’s design is based on a Hawaiian turtle (honu), a symbol of longevity and endurance rendered in a Polynesian tattoo style. The fret markers are stylized sharks teeth. The Tattoo Concert is available with or without an on-board preamp.
