BUILDING UPDATE For the information of members, demolition is now complete. The screw piles and footings are now in progress.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S) Q. Why are we doing the building works now and not next winter? A. If we did not start in 2014 we would have lost several government grants which would have dramatically affected the bottom line. Q. Why didn’t we demolish the whole of the northern half of the building? A. Due to extra costs and current leases of our tenants. Q. What is the completion date? A. In the future! We will provide regular updates of the progress of the building works. We know it is difficult at the moment but the long term gain will be beneficial to all members.

Team Wanda Rescue 2014 Surf Life Saving World Titles in La Grande Motte France In these big sporting events, it's rare that it all goes perfectly to plan. For Wanda it started out perfectly with Melissa Campbell crossing the line 1st and blitzing the field in both her age division (35-40years) and the younger age group in the Masters 2km beach run! The crowd of over 500 gave her a great cheer and clap as she came across the line and formed a guard of honour as she walked through to the marshalling with a huge smile on her face. Alas, this was short lived. Seeing Melissa and second place, Ruth, disqualified for a minor technicality that had absolutely no bearing on the result, and the harsh reality of sport and life came through, sometimes it's just not fair and common sense is replaced by something else. The crime—going around a single flag the wrong direction at the 1km mark, which was not explained at the start, nor was it marshalled and nor did it make one iota of difference. Continued over...

Worlds continued... We had a goal of 3 medals from these World titles and wanted them all to be gold. We didn't quite get there, with Ali Najem a courageous 2nd in the men’s open, Mel Campbell 4th in the women’s open, Jock Campbell 2nd in the masters (45-50yrs) and Mel first in the masters, but DQ’d. So 2 medals, not the right colour, but what this doesn't tell you is how proud of Mel, Ali and Johnny Woods I am for their sustained effort and preparation. They couldn't have done anything more, they tested their limits in every aspect. In an unprecedented 2km beach race there were over 130 competitors for the men’s race which got split into 3 heats of 45, with only 15 going through to the final in each heat. Jock and John Woods had to go all out to make it through to the final where they both came in the top 30, 2 hours later. In an ironman performance, Woodsy had to jog to the Surf swim final that was waiting for him as soon as he finished his 2km run heat. What I ask from my athletes is to give it everything until after the finish line. Ali Najem stormed home feeling dizzy for the last 200m of the 2km and almost pinched the race from the Canadian. When he came over the line he collapsed and his brother had to drag him off the course. That is what we talk about when we mention ‘will to win’ and mental toughness, telling your body it's going to do more than it wants, and then doing it. Young Johnny Woods did exceptionally well for his first year against the big boys, coming up from the U19’s, and making the final of the Surf Swim, 2km run and placing 22nd in the 100m obstacle swim. We are expecting big things from him in the future. Thanks to Lloyds Supa IGA Cronulla, Jock Athletic and Wanda Surf Club for the great support for Team Wanda. Surf Lifesaving World Titles—we're not finished with you! We'll be back soon. Well done chaps from a very proud, but not quite satisfied coach. Jock Campbell, Team Manager

NIPPERS FIRST DAY! What a beautiful day to start the nipper season. The water was perfect and the sun was shining. Thank you to all the nipper parents and kids for being patient for the first day. Everyone seemed to enjoy their day at the beach and we thank you for your understanding without a proper clubhouse to use. Great work from all the helpers on the day and fabulous to see some of our seniors helping out our young nippers. An exert from the Wanda JAG Facebook page: It's the people that make a club: we proved that today without a "true" club house! Go Wanda and welcome to all our new nippers and families! Georgie Woods and Emily Rohr helping our nippers!

Solly’s Joke of the Newsletter An old Irish farmer’s dog goes missing and he’s inconsolable. His wife says “Why don’t you put an advert in the paper?” He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing. “What did you put in the paper?’ his wife asks. “Here boy!” he replies.

CRUST/SNAP SPRING BEACH CLASSIC SUNDAY 12TH OCTOBER 2014 Conditions were just perfect for the 8K Beach Run / Walk for the Crust / Snap Spring Beach Classic Race. With registrations up on last years numbers as always, this run attracts the Elite runners and also fun runners and families who want to enjoy a good day out. This year's race was won very comfortably by Hamish Wallace (28.15) who is in great form. In second place was our own Ali Najem ( 29.58) who has recently returned from France where he competed for Wanda at the Rescue 2014 World Surf Lifesaving Championships where he came 2nd in the Open 2K Run. Our first female to cross the line was Kasey Mumby (31.02) in what was her first ever beach race ! She loved the sand experience so hopefully we will see Kasey at next year's Spring Beach Classic. Jack Porter (31.40) and Imogen Russell (46.48) won the U16 division with Shane 'Machine' McCarthy (32.20) and Donna Cox (47.17) winning the Over 40 Division and our Dash for Cash winner was won by Tilly Handforth. Events such as the Spring Beach Classic don't happen without a huge support from our Wanda Members and our Sponsors and we would like to take this opportunity to thank to our major sponsors—Crust Pizza, Snap Printing and Brooks for their continued support and to Chris & June Stephenson from the Timing Guys for their assistance with online registrations and timing. The big clock was a great addition so thanks Chris and June! We are looking forward to next years Crust / Snap Spring Beach Classic where we will be able to show case our new Club House. HELPING HALLY As you would be aware, a fundraiser was held for Wanda member, Hally Chapman. Hally is one of our lady boaties who was diagnosed with cancer and has undergone surgery. Hally and Tom have two small children and this has been a trying time for them and their families. Some of their wonderful friends put together a fundraiser for the Chapman family so that they could organise a cleaner for Hally and maybe a bit left over for a small holiday. Well, what a fantastic effort by everyone! This is from Katrina Johannson (another of our Wanda lady boaties) who helped organise this fundraiser: “We raised over $11,000 for them and were just so amazed and grateful for all the generous donations we received! We have paid a cleaner to clean their house for 3 months, we have arranged some home delivered groceries for 3 months and we bought a $1000 flight centre voucher. We gave them the rest in cash so that they can use it where they need to. They were both stunned by just how many people care (we gave her a card with everybody's name in it). She asked me to pass on a huge 'thank you' from them both. Thank you to everyone at Wanda who contributed and we wish Hally a speedy recovery
