TREASURED MEMENTO (Excerpt from ‘JustCronullaNews’) By Brad Forrest AMONG memorabilia boxed away at Wanda Surf Life Saving Club during its extensive refurbishment, is a treasured picture of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. He died last week aged 98; his State memorial service will be held next week. Prime Minister Gough Whitlam christens the surfboat Nelly Pedersen at Wanda SLSC in 1973. Picture: courtesy Wanda SLSC It shows Mr Whitlam, impeccably dressed in suit and tie, christening a new Wanda surfboat outside the Wanda’s clubhouse on January 14, 1973, with his wife, a smiling Margaret Whitlam, in the background. The Whitlams had lived earlier in Woolooware Road, before buying a home in Wangi Avenue, Cronulla and raising their family close to the sea (before Mr Whitlam became the Member of Werriwa and the family moved to the western suburbs). Affinity The Whitlams’ affinity with the water also stemmed from Mrs Whitlam’s own swimming prowess. As a younger Margaret Dovey, she excelled in competition swimming, among many sports, and aged 18 represented Australia at the 1938 Empire Games. And she encouraged her children to learn to swim in the Cronulla district. The photo is included in my book “A Club Called Wanda”, marking Wanda’s jubilee celebration of their first 50 years (1946-1996), and detailed under the chapter, Surf Boats: Christening “On the 14th January 1973, a large crowd turned out at Wanda to see the Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam and his wife Margaret, christen the club’s new surfboat ‘Nelly Pedersen’.(The Whitlams had lived in Woolooware Road and had their children taught to swim at Harry Gibbons’ Oasis Swim Centre in Flinders Road, Woolooware. Gibbons also coached Shane Gould, who went on to become one of Australia’s finest female Olympic champions). “The boat was the first donated to the club in 27 years, from a private individual who donated $1,750 and wished to remain anonymous. It was later revealed the donor was the son-in-law of Nelly Pederson, fine club supporter Billy Coomes. “After the launch, with the Whitlams watching, sweep Jack Folwell slipped as the crew took the boat out through the shore break for a demonstration. Flying “‘I was half in when we hit a wave and I went flying,’ Jack recalled. ‘I then had to swim out to the the boat … instead of a five minute row in the new boat it ended up taking about 30 minutes.’ “The PM joined in the cheering when Folwell and the crew safely returned.” The Whitlam children – Tony, Nick, Stephen and Catherine – have organised the State service, which will take place on November 5 at 11 a.m at Sydney Town Hall.

THANK YOU FROM THE CHAPMAN FAMILY‌ Hi Everyone, I wanted to email and give you an update on how things have been going since my release from hospital. I have been getting loads stronger every week. I ditched the walking frame after a week of being back at home and can make it through every day things fine now. Tom even says my legs are getting back to their old sturdy self. Thats a good thing.......I think. I even managed a 4km jog this afternoon. It was slow and a bit uncomfortable but geez it felt great to run again !!! We want to say thank you again for your support. The cleaner each week, and the groceries delivered has been a massive help allowing me to rest and use what energy I have towards the special things, like running around after the kids. And excitingly through your amazing generosity I am going to experience the number one thing on my bucket list. With the money raised, Tom and I are going to Italy in April next year. (After a week away with the kids to the Gold Coast as well) It's such a wonderful thing for us to look forward to after everything. And it's because of all of your generosity. Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts. We have been really moved by everyones support. We are looking forward to better health and an awesome year ahead. Love from Hally, Tom, Willow and Ted

GOOD LUCK to… Danielle McMahon,Tait Brannock and Ben Bolewski who are attending the Coolangatta Gold this weekend. We wish you guys all the best. Go Wanda!

Solly’s Joke of the Newsletter An answer I can understand. An American tourist asks an Irishman: “Why do scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?” To which the Irishman replies: “They have to go backwards. If they fell forwards, they’d still be in the boat.” SKI PADDLERS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Are you interested in being involved in a Development Program?
