CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR VINNIES. THANK YOU to the many kind members of Wanda who donated to the Vinnies Christmas appeal, in particular, our nippers who had the table overflowing! The lady at the church said it was like ‘magic’. So… thanks everyone. You would have made someone’s Christmas a little easier and happier!
Solly’s Joke of the Newsletter A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were. The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex. Her friend said “Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that? ‘HELLLLOOOO….” answered the blonde. “They’re watch dogs!”

Australia Day Running Festival THE annual Jane McGrath ning Festival on Wanda Beach.
Classic
will headline the Australia Day Run-
The 2.5km soft sand race will be in its 9th year in memory of Jane McGrath, the wife of cricket great Glenn McGrath. A 6km soft sand race through the historic Wanda Sand hills, names the Wanda X-Treme 6, makes up the second of the 2 races in the festival. Jock Campbell, former Fitness Coach of the Australian Cricket team, organises the annual event through his company Jock Athletic. ‘‘Australia Day is my favourite day of the year,’’ Campbell said. ‘‘My wife and I were great friends with Jane and we didn’t know what to do for her. ‘Sutherland Council contacted us about organising a race to add to their event calendar, so that’s how it all came about.’’ The Foundation is close to Campbell’s heart too because his mother died of breast cancer more than a 2 years ago. ‘‘It’s a day we remember Jane, my mother and people going through breast cancer,’’ Campbell said. In 2014, Cricket legend and McGrath Foundation President, Glenn McGrath, took part in the 2.5km Jane McGrath Classic, together with his children James and Holly. "It was the first time in a while I've been available to participate in the race and I loved it", says McGrath, also a Cronulla resident. "Jane was so proud of this event, so I'm always happy when we can be down there to support the event." Asked about how he faired over the 2.5km soft sand course, McGrath added "It wasn’t pretty but I did my best!" All the money raised from the Jane McGrath Classic will go to the McGrath Foundation and the Wanda
Surf Life Saving Club.

MIGHTY FAREWELLS FOR MARC LEABEATER By Brad Forrest from ‘JustCronullaNews’ website CRONULLA gave one of their own a tremendous send-off today. Such was his popularity, the number of Cronulla mourners at Marc Leabeater’s funeral were almost matched by those who came from outside the district, including friends from interstate and from the United States. Paddle tribute The send-off started at 7am when more than 200 friends gathered at North Cronulla beach for a paddle tribute to the former North Cronulla Nipper and Wanda state and national beach sprint star. More than half of them, wearing frangipanis in their hair, jumped on surfboards – both long and short – and eventually joined hands in a giant circle about 200 metres off the shore before splashing the water in tribute to Marc. The numbers at North Cronulla more than tripled for the 11am funeral service. Fittingly for a young man who loved the water, it was held between the sea and Gunnamatta Bay at St Aloysius Gonzaga Church, Cronulla. The pews quickly filled in both lower and upper sections of the church. Marc’s family and friends paid tribute to a larrikin kid who went on to excel at sport and academia (see http://www.justcronullanews.com/?p=2811) Someone who, seemingly, lived every minute of his life to the full. Fought for survival A youngster who, as his father Larry recalled, was born too young, and had to fight for his very survival. Then, aged 26, died far too young when a car collided with his motorbike nine days ago outside McDonalds at Taren Point. Brother Scott recalled how the older brother he knew as “Captain Chaos” would dominate conversations and situations; such was his love of life and his infectious humour. Amazing stories Four days after Christmas, and with the Nativity scene shining brightly in his church, they continued to amaze St Alysoius’ parish priest Rev Dr Tom Carroll with their stories of Marc Aaron Leabeater. For those who knew him, those tales retold just made them smile: right down to the final, fast-beating Recessional played as they carried his coffin away: “Sandstorm”by Darude. It was one of Marc’s favourites.
