President’s Report 68 Proud Years of Lifesaving Service It is my sincere pleasure to submit a summary for the 2013-2014 season for your consideration, my seventh year as President. Our Lifesaving duties started on the 21st of September and concluded on the 27th of April. Wanda has continued to provide a high level of aquatic safety to our beach going visitors. Once again we can proudly say “NO LIVES LOST”. This Season saw our active members provide 7450 patrolling hours plus 573.75 hours for water safety, Carnivals, and community events, 117 rescues, 1055 preventative actions, 23 first aid cases, 2 incidents requiring ambulances and 25 beach closures due to surf conditions. The above statistics can only come about from the diligence and enthusiasm of our active members, while we did have a few problems with our patrols this season it was heart-warming to see the Club members rally to rectify those problems which is something a great Club like ours I am sure will always do. I ask you all to make sure that you read Ben Harris ‘s Club Captains report and please take on board his guidance on our problems from this season. I would personally like to thank our Club Captain Ben Harris, this has been his third year in this role and he has gone above and beyond what would normally be expected of a Club Captain. Our Director of Lifesaving, Matt Waugh also has done a truly exceptional job. As a Director he is excused from doing patrolling hours while he holds this role. Matt has logged 107 hours of patrolling not only did he cover his own rostered patrol but he stepped up to cover other patrols that needed IRB drivers. He also obtained his Silver medallions in IRB and Basic Beach management and his ARTC certificate
Anita Pryke
this season. Also as recognition for this outstanding commitment to his role he was also awarded with the Open Lifesaver of the Year for Wanda. Matt was also recognised for his commitment to Lifesaving with a High Commendation at the Sydney Branch Awards of Excellence. Thank you to the Patrol Captains and Vice Captains for all your hard work in ensuring our Patrols run smoothly. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the Directors, this has been an extremely busy and stressful year, and you have all put in countless hours into your areas and I truly value the support you have given the Club and myself in dealing with these issues. My thanks to the driving force behind the IRB section, Sam Axiotis, Steve Stavrou, Graeme Wright and Bob Cane. This is a critically important section, our patrols and competition cannot take place without them. The C.V. Forshaw Trophy, which is presented to the “Most Consistent Member”, is voted by secret ballot over the last twelve months by the Management Committee at the monthly meetings. This year’s award goes to Brett Furniss. Brett is our Director of Education an extremely important role in our Club. As well as teaching our squads of, Bronze Medallion, ARTC and as an Assessor he is also responsible for running all the proficiencies for these awards to enable our Lifesavers to be on the beach each season. A truly deserving recipient of this sort after Club award. Brett was also recognised for his contribution to Education with receiving a High Commendation for Training Officer of the Year at the Sydney Branch Awards of Excellence.
Sunday the 1st of June 2014 we held a very important Special General Meeting to discuss the Club proceeding with the Stage 2 development. It was a very well attended meeting of our members. After some discussion, questions and answers the vote to proceed with this work and the borrowing of funds to finance these works was put to the members, the vote was unanimous to proceed. This work to our Club House will ensure that our members for many years to come will have the modern facilities and a platform to ensure that we continue to give to the beach going public the best Lifesaving service, that we remain one of the best competitive Clubs in Australia. I wish to give my sincere thanks to Mark Sargeant, Director of Facilities and convenor of the Building Committee, Gary Bradshaw and Mitchell Pryke for working so diligently with the Architects to get us to this result also to Trevor Elliott for his work with the finances. The Competition section again this season produced some fantastic results, thanks to Chris Fox Director of Competition and all your very hard working group of Captains, coaches and supporters. Some of the highlights were: ■■

Both the Senior and Junior sections of the Club continue to work together to keep these young members in Surf Lifesaving. The JAG again ran a very successful “Big Board Bounty” Carnival. The training camp once more proved to be very popular with our younger members with instruction coming from our senior competitors, some of which are State and National Champions. The Wanda JAG was also well represented with 2 member’s part of the Sydney Interbranch team.

Once again our so very important fund raising event the “Brooks, Caltex Sutherland to Surf” was run under the expertise of Mick Brannock as the S2S Co-ordinator and Anne Caterson as the Traffic Management Organiser plus the very capable S2S Committee. Our 42nd running of this event saw a record number of entries, with the help of all Club members this event will grow. The S2S is our major fundraiser of the year with all monies going back into the running of our Club and providing our Lifesavers with the equipment that they need such as the ATV that was purchased through the BRP Grant. It is essential that all Club members support the running of this event. Also our appreciation to Chris and Rhonda Fox, Lizzy Sargeant, Carol Woods and Gay Curtis for the running and organisation of the Spring Beach Classic” this event continues to grow and I am sure to become a popular event on the fun run calendar. Some other fundraisers that have contributed to the benefit of our Club and members this year were ■■

Thank you to Karen Hardie and her father, Keith for their running of the “Wanda Golf Day”, numbers were slightly down on the previous year, but the running and the organisation of the day was certainly exceptional and all the players had a great day.
To our Gym Manager Rod Holdsworth thank you for keeping our Gym in such wonderful working condition. To Kersten Sadler thank you for the many, many hours you give in your role as Registrar, with her husband Rob retiring they are off travelling overseas. We are certainly going to miss your expertise and administrative skills in the keeping of our Club records in such good order. Thank you to Wanda’s Ladies Committee and Chairwomen Lyn Robbins for the many hours they give to making our Carnivals and functions so successful. I always receive so many lovely compliments about our Ladies’ catering at the Carnivals that we run. These hard working ladies have raised $2000.00 for prizes for our 100% Lifesavers for Presentation Night. Thank you to John Douglas for the hours you spend on the computer entering our members into the Carnivals. Thank you to our Resident Caretaker, Matt Blackshaw, for keeping our Club house in good order. To our many Club Sponsors, we cannot thank you enough for your generous support. To Gay Curtis a very big thank you and our gratitude for all her hard work and professionalism in helping to secure and look after our sponsors. Thank you to Carol Woods and Lizzy Sargeant who both so ably keep the day to day administration side of the Club running so smoothly. The contribution of those outside the Club is not only welcomed but greatly valued. There are some people that have helped and assisted the Club over the past year. I wish to thank Scott Morrison Federal Member for Cook, Mark Speakman State Member for Cronulla, Barry Collier State Member for Miranda, John Rayner General Manager SSC, Cr Steve Simpson Mayor SSC, and Cr Kevin Schreiber, Cr Scott Williams Cr Carol Provan JP CMC Councillors A Ward SSC. Brad Whittaker Manager for Beach Operations SSC and the Life guards who we work closely with. To our sister Clubs in Bate Bay I wish you all the best for the coming season, and working closely with you on the many District matters that have arisen in the course of this season.
Patron’s Message It is disappointing that I write this message in such a way, however it shows how a few members can bring disrepute on our Club by not using common sense and also having a little discipline in regards to both our Club and the Association. Mainly applying to arrival on time and wearing of the Patrol Uniforms as required. In saying this, the Branch also has some overzealous members who I feel that their approach to our problems was in the wrong way in the first place. Most of you active members would not know the amount of stress that was undertaken by our Senior Officers and especially our President, Anita Pryke. In a positive way, the shakeup has seen a few of our Senior Members come back to Patrol so as to help out. The way I see it, if half of the Patrols can work as required why can’t the others ? Work it out for yourselves and if you are not willing to do so, then maybe you should look at another pastime. Now that I have got this off my mind, I feel that the rest of the Club is going well.
Ernest “Solly” Stephens OAM
As can be seen we are still maintaining a high ranking in competition and we recognise areas where we are lacking. We should intend to fill in these gaps. This can be helped by you bringing in friends of yours who need not be athletes but there are other areas of the Club that they may excel in. Socially and financially wise we are going well and with our intention to extend the Club House in the future so as to gain more storage at ground level. This will also give us the opportunity to enlarge the social area above. If this goes ahead it will be a bit inconvenient during the extensions but will be an asset for the future. In winding up I wish to thank you all from the President to the youngest Nipper for your efforts in the past season and look forward to seeing you again next season. Don’t forget to say Hello and keep smiling.
Ernest B Stephens OAM Patron
In closing, I am very excited for the future of our great Club, it certainly looks very bright. We have so many members working hard to ensure we are a strong Lifesaving Club, that our competitors will continue to get the facilities they need to produce their fantastic results, that our financial position goes from strength to strength and very importantly that we have the membership retention and growth that we need to do all the above.

Director of Administration Report It is my pleasure to present to you the 68th Annual report and Financial Statements of the Wanda Surf Life Saving Club inc., and in doing so I ask that you take the time to read the report and understand the season the Club has just gone through. This season has again been a very busy one for members who give up their time to ensure that the general public are kept safe during patrol hours and a big thank you to everyone. We as a Club need to ensure that we are carrying out our duties as Lifesavers making sure that we are keeping our eyes on the public swimming at our great beach and making sure that we are on the waters edge and carrying out surveillance in the water area we are responsible for and this was addressed this season after a few meetings were held with our patrolling members.
Next season we need to excel in our Lifesaving, which can be achieved by the Club. The board has just purchased an ATV to assist in getting gear to the beach as well as the IRB before starting time of patrols. I would also encourage all members to look at gaining more awards and maybe one day become a Patrol Captain or Vice Captain. This season we also saw the introduction of several facebook pages for members only to try to arrange a sub for their patrols and also for IRB Drivers and patrol Captains, as well we had Lizzy calling patrol members to make sure they attended their patrols as well as ensuring that we had an IRB Driver and crew at every patrol, Lizzy was also the author of our news letter that was sent to members to keep us up to date on what was happening within the Club. Once again the competition side of the Club had some great results at all local Carnivals as well as finishing 3rd at the State Championships and some great results at the Australian Championships. I can report that the constitution Committee have finished the draft revised constitution which will be released shortly to the membership for their comments before a

special General meeting is called to adopt this and move us forward as a Club. The Club under took a review this season with the members and this will allow us the opportunity to look at the way we are managing the Club and with assistance from members allow us to develop a strategic plan for the Club in all areas to allow us to build for the future of the Club and become stronger in all areas. I would like to acknowledge and record my thanks to our wonderful office staff of Carol Woods, Lizzy Sargeant your assistance and support is number one and with out your assistance I do not know where we would be in the administration side of the Club.

A year full of meetings, discussions, arguments and many different opinions - sounds like a surf Club doesn’t it!
As a result of all the above a second Special General Meeting was called for due to the change of method of construction, increased floor space, and resulting increased building costs. The result of the meeting was very encouraging with the members giving us the green light to proceed.
Mark Sargeant
Our carpark is currently being redesigned and overhauled. The positives of this include much needed improved stormwater runoff control, new walkways etc. How the parking layout functions remains to be seen. Thank you to Sutherland Shire Council for at least allowing us to present our case.
The work involving the Stage 2 redevelopment of our Clubhouse has been hugely frustrating and, at times, it felt like I was head butting a brick wall due to the involvement of the Architectural Review Board (Council appointed) and the North Cronulla Precinct committee. At the time of writing this report the proposed works are as follows: ■■
■■
■■
■■
After much consultation with members and those as listed above, plans were agreed upon and submitted to council.
As a result Stage 2 is proceeding full steam ahead. This will obviously cause major disruptions and chaos to our Club, this will be short term only. The end result will be amazing, our Club is already the best, soon we will also have the best facilities! Help will be required particularly packing and storing prior to building works. Please help! I would like to thank the Building Committee who have been involved over the past year, this has been basically Gary Bradshaw, Mitchell and Anita Pryke. Their support and input has been fantastic.
Club Wanda has had another busy and profitable year. The increase in patronage is obvious and the bookings continue to pour in. Obviously if the building works proceed as planned our profits will be greatly reduced in the short term. Longer term I believe the facilities and area provided will be fantastic for all members. Thank you to our events manager and to our wonderful staff. Once again, thank you to Stick (Rod Holdsworth) who manages the gym so well and is always welcoming with a big smile. Also the usuals – Solly, Peter Brady and Spider who constantly do work around the Club, keeping the place functioning for everyone. Thank you.
Mark Sargeant Facilities Director
Council Development approval has been received. Work on issuing the Construction Certificate is in progress. A big thank you to Bernie Cohen of Essential Certifiers Liverpool for his continuing support and contribution. Our architects, Simon Tonks of Artas, and engineer, Chris Morris, have been great in redesigning the building as the original plans and method of construction were required to be scrapped, again due to the above parties.

Club Captain’s Report The season of 2013 / 2014 has held some mixed results for Wanda SLSC as a whole. During the season our Lifesaving operations received increased scrutiny. This was as a result of us not performing our duties on the beach to the best of our abilities. The bottom line was that we didn’t project the image of a professional Lifesaving organisation and we were firmly in the focus of our Lifesaving peers. The added attention on our patrols by various levels of Surf Lifesaving placed a large amount of pressure on our Club’s management structures and probably took the majority of our attention from achieving our core objectives and shifted our efforts into crisis management. One thing we all must keep in mind whenever we are performing our duties for our great Club is that “Perception is reality”. What this means is that it is imperative that we take a professional and diligent attitude toward our work whether that be in administration, or actively in our patrols, or when we are representing our Club in various competitions, or as simple as helping on a Sunday morning with the
Nippers. We are the advertisement for Wanda to the wider community and how we conduct ourselves is constantly on display to be measured against the community’s expectations. This professional image starts with having a positive attitude toward our patrols and wearing our uniform correctly and being attentive to the beach and watching what is happening in the water. With the difficulties we experienced and the external pressures being placed on our Club the main thing I personally found most heartening about our membership, which I believe we can all take pride in, is the resolve and the amount of Club spirit which was displayed during the darkest period. We all metaphorically speaking stood-up, worked together as a team and supported each other. These are some of the core values that makes Wanda the great Club it is. Looking forward to the future we need to recognise our strengths and weaknesses and we also need to identify our opportunities and where our threats lie. With this we can develop plans to ensure the long term viability of our Club for future generations in whatever it is we all as members of Wanda choose to pursue. The planning forms a framework for us to follow
Ben Harris
in the administration of the Club. However, this is only the first step in what is a long journey for Wanda. The planning and brainstorming session is integral to what we want to achieve, it could be rendered worthless without the follow-up of real action. We may have the best of intentions in the planning phase, it will be fruitless without the drive and the will to make it happen. With that I will draw my annual report to a conclusion by calling on all Wanda members to become actively involved in the future direction and decision making process of our Club. It must be remembered that it is not the sole responsibility of the Board of Directors to make policy and to act. This is the responsibility of the membership as a whole. It has been an honour to serve you all again as the Club Captain of Wanda SLSC.

Director of Lifesaving Report The flags have been pulled down on another season at Wanda Surf Club. I would like to thank all members that have assisted with this year’s patrols, and to congratulate them on another solid effort through a difficult season. It is your constant vigilance on patrol that keeps the beaches safe. It has been wonderful to have the assistance of so many great members in keeping our patrol up to a high standard. For our first Sydney Branch inspection, we received 100%: a fantastic start to the season. All patrol members have worked well to uphold the high patrol standards that we strive for here at Wanda, ensuring that we make it though those difficult times. I’d like to give special thanks to our Captains who have provided the leadership necessary to pull us through to the other side. Patrol 2 is this year’s champion patrol. They have been very reliable all through
the season, and every member shows a keen interest in their patrolling duties. This season will be the last for the Captain, Kath Fox, and IRB driver, Chris Taylor. Both have been huge assets to the Club, and it is now time for the next generation to step forward to take their place. We will be welcoming more of our these younger members next season, as the next group of Nippers achieve their SRC awards, and the older ones progress to their Bronze Medallion. It is important that we all do what we can to help them on their way through the Club, and to show them the opportunities that are all around them. The numbers that we consolidate today will alleviate the problems we face tomorrow. This season we suffered a drop in overall numbers, and dropped to eleven patrol teams to ensure we were always able to maintain our patrol obligations. This meant an additional patrol for each of our teams, and I know some of you were feeling the strain. The Club greatly appreciates the effort that you put in week in, week out. We cannot do it without you. We have had a few individual members that I’d like to mention that have been exemplary in keeping our patrols operational when we have been in need. The three most consistent helpers this season were Chris Taylor, Mitch
Palmer, and Aaron Taylor. They regularly responded to text messages requesting assistance down on the beach, giving up even more of their time. Lizzy has been a great help behind the scenes as ever, helping organise our patrol teams for each weekend. She helps us uncover any potential issues during the week before they become big problems on the weekend. Please thank her if you get the chance. The Nipper parent IRB drivers have again been great to our patrols in times of need. They work hard every Sunday morning with the Nippers, and often put up their hand to assist when our patrols are in need. But while I do really appreciate their help, I would like to see more of our patrolling members stepping up to become drivers. I can tell you personally that the course is a lot of fun, and you become part of a strong team. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get two trained IRB drivers on each patrol, and never have to send out a text? Moving towards next season presents a number of new challenges for us to face as a Club, but I am sure if we face them together we will come out on top.

Education Director’s Report With 2013-2014 coming to an end, Wanda had a good year with more members doing higher awards such as Spinal, ARTC and Beach Management. I would like take this opportunity to thank Sam Axiotis & Co for their outstanding training to obtain more IRB Crew and Drivers – Well done !!
Now Wanda has an A.T.V. it should make training more enjoyable to tow the IRB to and from the beach instead of pushing up the hill. With the SRC training I would like to thank Karen Ross and David Philpot for looking after the Nippers. During the season James Caterson and Matt Blackshaw attended the Trainers Course and should be qualified trainers at the start of next season. Over winter 5 members (Luis Rudenas, Scott McMaster, Matthew Bodey and Jo Handforth) will also attend the trainers course and will be qualified trainers before Christmas. This will be a great achievement for Wanda, as this will enable Wanda to
Brett Furniss
achieve more awards next season and beyond. I thank the Committee for their ongoing support and look forward to next season with more trainers to assist with Awards.

JAG Chairman’s Report “I would like to thank all the Nippers and parents who have chosen Wanda as their Club. Especially to all the new members that have joined us this year. I truly hoped you have enjoyed the year and I look forward to seeing you all back at Wanda again in October 2014 as we celebrate our 50th Nipper year” Bluey It is with pleasure that I write the Chairman’s report for 2013/14 as this season has been a very successful one for our Club. But what is the measure of this success? Our success can and should be measured across many areas.
Culture Culture is what underpins a great Club and we have a culture that has a perfect mix of fun, competitiveness and team work. Everyone in the Club contributes to this culture so thank you to all.
Sponsors Wanda JAG is lucky to have long standing sponsors that help fund a range of activities. To our major sponsors, Purnell Motors, AJ
Grant, Tempus Wealth thank you for your continued support. Also to our new Age Manager sponsor The Fresh Produce Group, welcome and thank you. And to all other sponsors and supporters, we very much appreciate your financial assistance. Steven Southwell
Commitment of the Committee Without doubt, the Wanda JAG Committee always strives to improve the way this Club operates. Be that financially, structurally or operationally. This has been achieved by agreeing on a plan and working together to achieve these goals. A special mention to Anne Marie Berry who after 3 years in the role as Treasurer will retire from the committee. Anne Marie has brought professional rigour to the way our finances are managed and reported and for that we are truly thankful. You will be missed A-M.
State Championships and with that we also reclaimed the top placed Club in the Bate Bay. The recruitment of our elite Senior Club competitors guided by Dean and Ian Ross has been an excellent initiative to help improve on the skills of our kids. Also, thanks to Kenny and Kurtis for taking care of our U8 Wade training.
Volunteerism To our IRB team lead by Steve Stavrou, John Brown and the water safety team, the Social Committee, Big Board Bounty Committee and all the parents that helped with clothing sales, BBQ, Beach set up or performed official duties at Carnivals a big thank you. And Rossi, it is no wonder you are Greenhills Fittest Man with all work you do for this Club.
Under 6 girls
Our Nippers
Competition Under the guidance of our coaching team lead by Dean McMahon, we have improved on last year to finished 3rd at the NSW
From our new U6s to our U14’s, your conduct has been fantastic. Yes, you have performed well in competition but that comes second to the way you have behaved week in, week out. To our Club Captains, Kurt Stavrou and Shelby Wilde thank you for your leadership. To all the U14s we hope you enjoyed your years at Wanda Nippers and best of luck in the Seniors next year. Also a big thanks to Brett Taper, Louise Southwell, Darren Gossling and Mark Smith for guiding these kids through their time at JAG.
The Future While Wanda JAG is performing well we can always do better. To that end a workshop was held at the end of the season to review where we are going well and where we could improve. This combined with the State Team
Wanda survey results culminated in a Wanda JAG, 3 year strategic plan that will be implemented in 2014/15. As we move into our 50th year I would like to take this moment to thank everyone who has supported me in the role of Wanda JAG Chairman. Being part of the team has been a fantastic experience. I have also enjoyed the feedback from parents on the beach. For me personally, to see the return of the March Past, R&R and a Surf Board Riding program and I’d like to thank Donna Brown, Virginia McMahon (March Past), Pauline Brown & Julie Adams (R&R) and Tony Rohr
(Surfing) for giving some kids an opportunity to be involved in something they are passionate about. That’s what makes us truly great and truly successful – providing everything that this wonderful movement of Surf Lifesaving has to offer and being inclusive. Regards,
Steve Southwell Wanda JAG Chairman March Past

JAG Water Safety Report We had another very successful season on our beach and more importantly everyone was safe in the water and there were no major incidents.
John Brown
swimming with the kids, encouraging and always on hand when needed to help out when the going just got too tough. Importantly our Nippers try their hardest. The determination is impressive and shows when you are in the water with them. To anyone who would like to be involved we’d love to have you on board. We always need more hands to share the load and most importantly the fun. Wanda holds regular Bronze medallion and IRB courses year round. Please contact the Club to find out more details. Thank you to all our water safety members; tube swimmers, board paddlers, IRB crews and drivers. Water safety was provided each Sunday, at Club training, Carnivals and even through the winter training. Without each of you we cannot provide the activities we all enjoy. The start of the season is always a big adventure for Nippers and particularly the Under-9s first year swimming and paddling around the buoy out the back. This year we had some challenging conditions to contend with, with a lot of water movement and some beach closures. It was always good to see Nippers from all age groups up for the challenge. It took a few weeks to get everyone proficient this year because of the conditions but by season end most, if not all, were charging. On the bigger days we always had plenty of water safety
Look forward to seeing you at the beach next season.
John Brown
JAG Boys Club Captain Report I would like start by saying it has been such an honour to be chosen as one of the Club Captains of such a proud and strong Nipper Club. Wanda Nippers have had an amazing year with great results including coming 3rd overall in point score at this seasons State Carnival. I would like to congratulate all the kids that competed at Carnivals up to and including State this year and congratulate all my fellow team members that won medals. I would like to thank our Age Managers Darren Gossling and Mark Smith, thank you for putting up with the Red Cap Boys over the years!
I moved to Wanda in the under 9s and have loved every minute of it, from the training to fun times under the tents at Carnivals. Nippers has become a major part of my life, it has taught me so much, not only about the surf, making me fit and healthy and giving me the skills to be able to save someone but also about how to be a good team member. I have made so many friends both younger and older than myself; these friendships will stay with me forever. I would like to also thank the JAG Committee for all the work involved in keeping this Club going. I would like to thank all the Mums and Dads that helped all season, including officiating, water safety who often suffered in the cold water throughout the year to keep all us kids safe whilst we were in the water. A MASSIVE thank you for all our coaches on sand and water, Dean McMahon, Ian Ross, Dave Phillpot, Luke Carneige, Paul Kotsis, Kurtis and Ken Smith. We all loved going to training, we train hard but these coaches make it so enjoyable!
Kurt Stavrou
The U14 trip away to Queensland was my highlight of all my Nipper years; it was a weekend away with great friends that I will forever remember. I hope all you younger Nipper kids are looking forward to the trip away, it is so much fun. Finally hope you all enjoyed my company around the Club and I am looking forward to going into the U15 but I will always be around to support all my fellow Nipper friends. Good Luck and I hope you all stay on after you finish in the Under 14’s and come to the Senior Club with me.
Kurt Stavrou
JAG Girls Club Captain Report This year, I was honoured with the role of being Club Captain. I got to watch all of the Nippers grow more confident in the water, learn about water safety but most importantly of all, have fun! This year at State, Wanda did extraordinarily well, coming 3rd overall! Way to go! But we couldn’t have achieved the results we did without the water safety, trainers or mums and dads! I’ve had an amazing experience at Nippers and I couldn’t possibly finish the season without thanking Louise Southwell, our
Assistant Manager, and Brett Taper, our Age Manager. They ensured that we had fun, had the right skills and supported us each week. We had a great time on our trip away to Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast. I would like to thank all the people who bought snow cones! Finally, my biggest thank you goes to all the parents who turn up week in and week out, taking us to Carnivals and getting the sand out of our eyes, because without you none of us would have been able to complete the season! Thanks to everyone for the past 9 years! Go Wanda!

JAG Water Co-ordinator’s Report Another testing season again at Wanda with big seas, some nice flat days & as always lots of rips up & down the beach. It’s one thing our brave kids from our Club never worry about, big seas & testing conditions. This is never more evident than when at Carnivals & seeing Wanda kids having a go in any seas.
I can’t do my job unless there’s a great water safety crew, which we definitely have at Wanda. A Big, Big thanks to all those parents who don the “orange Rashie” each Sunday to help out. Along with the brilliant IRB crew, Sundays just wouldn’t happen without you guys so once again Thanks Very much. I’d also like to thank all the U14’s who jump in & help out after their races are done. Last Thank You is to all the great Nippers we have who get in there & give it their best shot each Sunday. Your parents should be very proud of you.
Keep enjoying yourselves at Nippers, See you all next season.
Ian Ross
JAG Beach Co-ordinator’s Report Another Beach season that culminated to the same conditions experienced during the 2012/2013 season at the 2013/2014 All Age State Championships, once again held at Ocean Beach/Umina Surf Clubs at the Central Coast. The big difference is most events were held and completed with Wanda SLSC taking out 3rd place for the 2013/2014 season and becoming the number 1 Surf Club in the Bate Bay District - what an achievement. This was a sensational and ideal way to finish a very successive year for our Beach Competitors. The Bluebottle Beachies represented Wanda SLSC with pride and grace during the State Championship. To recap; the U14’s Boys Sprint Relay Team winning Gold for the third successive season at State (no relays were held during the 2012/2013 State Championships due to weather) - this achievement and effort by these young men is a milestone for the Club.
The other fantastic results were:-The U8’s Girls & Boys Sprint Relay Team winning Bronze; Jade Tattam winning Silver in the U8’s Girls Flags; U9’s Girls Sprint Relay Team winning Silver; and our Sprinters for the U11’s Cameron Team winning Gold. As the results dictate at the State Championships, plus the fantastic results from Branch, The Bate Bay 4 Way Carnival, Sydney Water and all other Carnivals (full results can be viewed on; www. wandaNippers.com.au) the season for our Beach Team was one to be proud of. The introduction of Fitter, Faster, Stronger Beach Program was a great initiative, which we will continue, make it more viable, and incorporate specific exercise for all disciplines to encourage all Nippers to participate for the upcoming 2014/2015 season. To add, we plan to improve our Beach Section with
Jade Tattam
the outcome/s from the sub-committees that have been conducted and hopefully intertwine training with the Seniors. With renown commitment and enthusiasm, we look forward to a Stronger, Faster, Fitter, and successful 2014/2015 Beach season. Paul Kotsis

JAG Team Manager’s Report Firstly I would like to thank all the Age Managers for their support this past season. It was my first year in the role and although at times it was a lot of work there was a lot of support from within the Club. I would especially like to thank Shannon Dixon and Julie-Anne Warn for taking on a lot of the workload that Ken Smith used to take on during his time as Team Manager. There were many times throughout the season that Ken was there for advice and helped steer me in the right direction and for that –
thanks heaps Kenny. Throughout the season I witnessed some amazing displays of skills – fitness and courage from all age groups. Standing on the finish line on Champo Days both Tim Mayo and I saw a few tears, a lot of hugs and pats on the back to fellow competitors and some amazing displays of good sportsmanship. One particular display of good sportsmanship that comes to mind was Emily Eaves in the 13 girls who had a tight race with Brooke Dickson and both Tim and I couldn’t pick who was first or second but to her credit Emily said that it was Brooke who had won the race – that’s the sort of sportsmanship that is right throughout our Club.
As we headed towards State this year we had a lot of you training down on the Bay and in the surf – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The numbers turning up were fantastic and it’s a credit to both you and your parents for putting in the time and the effort - and the results showed in our 3rd placing at State. I look forward to yet another year down on the beach watching you young Nippers learning the skills that it takes to become Lifesavers. Tell your friends from school what a great Club we have at Wanda and get them to join up this year with you.

JAG Age Managers Reports Under 6 Girls This season has been a big learning curve for the Under 6 girls, some of the parents and the Age Manager who were all new to Nippers. The girls have shown a keen interest in all the lessons that were organised, especially if it involved getting wet and playing in the sand. Being a larger group (25-40 girls at a time) it has been hard to get to know each girl individually, but some of their personalities and determination did shine through…. especially when they were competing against Under 6 boys or their parents. I do see some future champs emerging. The highlight of the season was the
Gunnamatta Bay training. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day especially the opportunity to experience board training, wade (never seen so many dolphin dives) and the ride on the IRB. As a new Age Manager, I appreciated the support from the experienced Wanda members such as Dave Phillpot and Gary McNamara especially at the beginning and throughout the year. Each training session wouldn’t have been as successful without the help of the Age Manager’s assistants Sharon McKenzie, Gary Brown and Daniel Greaves and the numerous parent helpers, who helped out each weekend. Secretly… I think the helpers ended up having as much fun, or more, than the kids and it gave them an opportunity to interact with their daughters and the other parents. Hoping to see all the girls back next season, in either U6s or U7s.
Leanne
Under 6 Boys We had a great season for the youngsters although it took a couple of weeks to find their confidence & new friends. It was a pleasure for me, as the manager, to see them each week all get on so well. A special thanks to Santi & Rob also to the other parents that helped out where they could. Standouts for me were the kids that turned up each week even when the weather was against us. To me that’s what it is about to become a Lifesaver not just the nice weather and flat surf but all conditions. I hope that I see you all again next year bigger, stronger & more confident.
Todd
Under 7 Girls Thank you all for a fun season. The highlight of my summer weeks is Sunday mornings seeing your big smiling faces. This Season we had some new friends join us and many friends returning for their second season with Wanda. It is lovely to see the friendships the girls are forming in the group and I am confident many of the friends you make here at Wanda will last a lifetime. This year we have mastered putting a patient in the “Recovery Position”, learned simple CPR techniques, practiced how to dolphin dive, caught a few waves, discussed some of the dangers at the beach, visited the patrol on duty and become experts at flags. Oh, and we beat the boys at tug-o-war - GO GIRLS! Congratulations to the girls who received 100% and those that received 200% Attendance. What a great effort to turn up each weekend, even on the rainy days. I would also like to acknowledge your families for helping you get to the beach each weekend - well done mum’s, dad’s, nan’s, pop’s, sister’s and brother’s. To all my “Pink Caps” - it is great to manage such a competitive and outgoing bunch of girls, it has been thrilling for me to observe you all grow in self-confidence and surf awareness throughout the season. 2014/2015 is going to be a very exciting, we will continue to develop our surf-Lifesaving skills and we will begin competing at the Carnivals just like the big kids!
Thank you to my assistant Age Managers Nathan, Geoff and Stefan. Your help and dedication running along the beach and getting in the water with the girls is a big contribution to their confidence and awareness. To all the other parents that help out each week standing in knee deep water, on the sand, at BBQ duty and on our Set-up days your efforts are greatly appreciated and important to making Sundays fun for the girls. I am looking forward to seeing you all return to Wanda next season.
Katie
Under 7 Boys The under 7’s Nippers team once again had a great season, filled with lots of fun & learning along the way, although we had a drop out of about 17-19 from the previous season we were quite lucky to pick up 19 newbies which pumped the team back up to 39, great outcome.
water activities with the kids jumping into the water & wading with confidence, not to mention a few bodysurfing back to shore. A huge thanks to my 3 Assisting Age Managers Michael Kay, Trent White & Michael Baker for the help & effort they put in throughout the season also to all the parents who helped out with water safety, bbq duty, beach set-up & pack-up, you are all great love your work & dedication. Also can’t believe how much the kids have grown and changed mentally throughout the 7 or so months off season, well done kids you all performed exceptionally well. Miss u all & can’t wait to see you soon, bigger, faster, enthusiastic & energised ready for those huge sand hill runs and heaps more water stuffs. Looking forward to seeing you all in October.

Under 8 Girls The U8 Girls have had quite a huge year this year. Our group started on rocky ground, though we pulled together & made it through the season. That’s what it’s all about. They all made the step up to U8’s from the U7’s, as well as welcoming quite a few newcomers. A whole bunch of words
We did not get off to a very good start with 3-4 wet days which we spent in the Clubhouse learning about the beach & first aid the rest of the days were picture perfect. This season saw an increase in come to mind when I think of our Girls. Amazing, Awesome, Extreme, Sporting, Camaraderie, Sportsmanship, Kind, Witty, Tough, Laughter, Determination, Tears, Curiosity just to name a few. All of the girls “grew up” during the course of the season & started

to take Nippers a bit more seriously, some more seriously than others. This leads me to say, that we have an amazing group of girls, not only do they want to have fun, they also want to do their best & try & win. With this growing up came friendships. I know the girls had friendships & team bonding last year, though this year they took it to a whole new level. They all continued to encourage one another on the side lines & before going to a race. Common words heard from our Age Group were “Come On you can do it”, “Run as fast as you can”, “Try your Hardest”, “I’m so proud of you”, “Go & have fun”, “Give it your best shot”, “Put in 110% effort” & “XPLODE”. I think we will be called the U9’s Xplode Girls Team next year. They all looked out for one another & they made everyone feel welcome. At competitions, the girls shook hands with the other teams / Clubs. This is great sportsmanship. When we had girls competing against one another in events, they shook each other’s hands & said congratulations & good luck. You do not see much of that these days. All the girls have beautiful manners (sometimes, with all the excitement, they may have been forgotten).
Cassandra
Under 8 Boys What a fantastic season, I can honestly say that there isn’t a single boy that hasn’t improved tenfold over the season. The boys started the year a little nervous of the water, but by the end of it they were all wading like dolphins! There was a strong attendance by the boys at wade training which meant personal best results were seen week in and week out, as well as some outstanding results at champo days and some great outcomes at
Ohana, 4 way Carnival, Sydney Branch and State. Just like the water the beach results were just as impressive, with medals and personal best results achieved at 4 Way Carnival, Sydney Branch and State. We also had some great success as a team with the relay teams. Like always my job was made easy by having a great group of boys wanting to learn and giving it their all week in and week out. A big thank you to the Darren and Brad for once again being an assistant, these guys were involved every weekend no matter what the weather. Thanks to Kenny and Kurtis Smith for the time and effort involved in the wade training each and every week, it did make a huge impact on the boys. Thank you to the boys and parents and cant wait to see you next season.

Under 9 Girls We started off the season well with a core group of girls from the previous year. We did however lose quite a few, as I feel the transition from U8 to U9 is quite a big one and perhaps daunting to many. We were however pleased to have a few new girls join us who quickly joined the group and enhanced their skills. The girls have really enjoyed their time on the boards and swimming in the surf. We have had a few wet rough sea swelled days yet this did not deter the girls too much. All
the girls gave their best at all Champo days and enjoyed the fun of the Ohana Carnival! We had good success at Branch with Tyler Coles, May Dixon, Layla Molloy and Zara Lammers winning Gold in the Beach Relay. State Champs was enjoyed by all and both Maya Dixon and Layla Molloy made it in the finals for Board and Layla in the finals for individual swim, a great achievement as this is their first year in these events. We got a Swim Team up, the girls did their best yet missed the semis by 1 point. We had great success on the track with the girls: Tyler Coles, Maya Dixon, Maya Gribble and Zara Lammers bringing home a Silver Medal in Beach Relay. The girls all put in a fantastic effort in Flags with Tyler just being pipped at the post for a spot in the finals. Many of the girls joined the resurrected March Past team trained by Donna and Virginia and thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to represent their Club! Well done and you all looked great in your uniforms! All in all, both Jason and Nicki have enjoyed our new roles as Assistant Manager and Manger respectfully and appreciate the continued support of Dave Phillpot and many others that have supported us this year. We could not have done it without the fabulous support of the U9 girls parents and we appreciate all their help and support. We are looking forward to great fun and training when we venture into U10.
Nicki & Jason
The girl’s sportsmanship this Season was outstanding, they encouraged all who participated. I enjoyed and was very proud to be the Team Manager this year and look forward to another great year next season.

Under 10 Boys Under 9 Boys What a great year it was for all the under 9 boys. This was the first year the boys were able to compete in the surf events .The proficiencies tested the courage of some boys at first but determination see them come out on top. A good number had braved the cold weather in Autumn and Winter and started their board training regime at Gunnamatta Bay. Thank you Kenny Smith and Justin Barratta for your efforts. As the warmer weather approached the boys commenced board training again led by Dean and his team of seniors the boys took to the surf. The green and white capped boys proudly represented their Club at the Sydney Water Carnivals, 4 way Carnival, IMB Carnival, Ohana Carnival, Sydney Branch and State Carnivals. The boys competed admirably and with good sportsmanship and achieved great results and medals in almost all disciplines. The state team performed well in not so favourable conditions - the team excelled with multiple competitors in quarters, semis and finals in all individual and team races. An outstanding effort by all it was great to watch and be part of. A big thank you to Andrew Cole who worked tirelessly behind the scenes; collecting stats, maintaining communication, providing information throughout the season and supporting every Sunday. A big thank you also to Phil Webb who assisted with training weekly and support at Carnivals. I hope to see you all again next year.

Under 10 Girls What a great year by the under 10 girls. A great group of girls who performed well in the water and had a great time whilst waiting for events, colouring themselves in Zinc and doing cartwheels and gymnastics. All girls performed well this year a great improvement on last year’s results. This year saw the girls collect a number of medals at all the Carnivals. The Swim Team and board relay team were able to pick up medals at all the Carnivals and all the girls except one who was sick all picked up a medal at the 4 Way Carnival. This was carried through to State where the girls received a credible 5th in the surf team final and 6th in the Board Team final and Zoe Jay making it to the swim final with all girls reaching at least a semi-final in their events.
The Under 10 boys had a great season. You are all a great bunch of kids and a credit to your parents. Each Sunday you boys turn up ready to tackle the Board, Swim, Flags, Wade and Sprint. Every week you showed your surf skills and improved both on the beach and in the water. Every boy encouraged and clapped his team mates to finish the event. Well done to those of you that competed at
the State Titles at Umina, and braved the weather conditions again. You did Wanda proud. A special mention to Henri who won a silver medal in the surf swim. And to Jake, Morgan, Josh and Henri who won a silver in the surf teams. A big thank you to the parents that helped out each week and made our jobs as managers easier. Enjoy your break and look forward to seeing you all next season.

Under 11 Girls What a great year. This was my first year as Age Manager and although I have been involved with the girls as Assistant Age Manager since they were under 7s I wasn’t sure whether I could do as good a job as Dave and Jason had done the years before. I have enjoyed every week and was blessed to have a great bunch of girls this year, as a team they all got on well, competed hard on champo days and gave support to each other without exception. All are a credit to their parents and the Club. A few highlights for this year wereFirst has to go to Gracie, Lara, Lilly, and Ella for their silver medal at the State Championships in the Swim Teams event, another was first and second place at the 4 Way by our Board Rescue Teams of Lilly and Samantha and Grace and Kayla. Congratulations to Lily Cotter and Amber on their selection in the March Past Team. Sometimes it’s not about medals but effort and at Umina the Sprint Relay Team of Samantha Archer, Samantha Babister, Laura, and Hayley gave their best in trying conditions. Other notable efforts this year included Mikaela’s Board Race on Champo Day even though she didn’t want to race, Taylania’s swim at State in making the semi-finals, Olivia’s effort in Flags at Branch and the show of sportsmanship by the whole squad for swimming with Natasha in her proficiency swim. A huge thank you to Jasmin Peake for chaperoning the girls at camp, and I couldn’t be Age Manager of the year without the help John Archer and the worst looking secretary ever Todd McLachlan. Thanks for a great year and hope to see all back next year.
Todd
Under 11 Boys 2013/14 was an outstanding season from the under 11 boys. A season with more than its fair share of ups and downs – although difficult seas and miserable weather saw Sydney Branch cancelled, the Sydney Water Series reduced to 3 rounds and incredibly State was almost as bad as last year!! We were lucky enough to get a few good Sundays and some great weather for The Big Board Bounty and 4 Way. Regardless of the weather the boys battled through it all finishing with some admirable performances and many impressive results and most of the time with smiles on their faces. At times, we seemed to be watching bright sunny Saturday’s followed by cold dreary Sunday’s but there was rarely a complaint nor did it dampen our boys spirit or enthusiasm. Like last year we noticed an even stronger more patriotic mentality in the group this year and with the addition of the newer events like Ironman, Cameron & Board Rescue, generally the boys were far more confident and eager to be a part of the Team Events. Most of the guys seemed less bothered by the bigger waves or cooler temperatures this season and it was rewarding to watch them often supporting and encouraging each other, competing as a team rather than as individuals and supporting their Bate Bay brothers at the bigger Carnivals. With slightly fewer
registered boys this year, a great bunch of proud and supportive parents and continued procedural improvements at the Club – Pete and I found looking after this great bunch of guys a far easier, more engaging and rewarding task than in previous years. From first timers around the cans, through to State Champions, this is an age group of impressive young men that produced so many competitive, brave and inspirational performances this season that it’s almost impossible to list and even harder to select one or two to highlight – suffice to say that both individually and as a team the U11 Boys achieved at the highest levels in their sport this year and it was a pleasure to be there to watch. See you next year,
Dicko & Pete
Under 12 Girls This season we welcomed a few new Wanda Nipperettes we hope these new girls & their families had an enjoyable season, as too the regular seasoned staple of girls and families and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year. It’s amazing to see how all you girls step up your individual performance year on year, how you’re now developing a natural understanding of the ocean and how to take advantage of it in competition and for enjoyment.
As Age Managers; one of the things we enjoy most is seeing your collective surge of enthusiasm at the end of Nippers, with an ever increasing number of you rushing off, grabbing boards, racing out into water and enjoying the waves and hanging out in the gaggle of 10 to 15 girls. Paul & I often reflect on where that energy was a few minutes before when you were all claim to be “dying” and the collective “NOOOoooo” when we suggest another event... As all of you move into High School or king of the Kids in Primary it was clear to see the change in the group “tude” as you mature into “tweens” (please note the oxymoron), and Paul & I have to learn a language of “OMG’s”, “whatev’s” and the boy talk – where did that come from... This year you girls showed us the true calling of age managing as the respect and admiration of years gone by disappeared and we became your towel & goggle totem pole handlers, our voice’s became white noise as you all collectively seized control of what we did each week. We took a back seat as we appraised our years of subtle leadership training & team building coming to the fore; or that’s how we justified our contribution to the Season. As in all seasons past, the intense level of competition and comradely you girls bring to the beach each week is amazing and continually pushes you to find a new personal best week after week, and makes the Wanda U12G team into the competitive force that you are. There are so many highlights and outstanding individual performances over the season: ■■
■■
■■
Kiera and Mia R consistently set and redefine individual benchmarks, with Rachel, Tash, Ava & Annalise chase them down, and making the force that is the A water team. The achievements & performances of Mia A, Ash, Livy, Ally in the B & C water teams and consistently outperforming A teams in other Clubs and seeing two or three Wanda teams in competition finals is always the talk beach by other Clubs. Beach competition was fierce this year as Sarah & Ruby were challenged by a continual pack of girls often led by Layne and randomly Tash, with a split hair between you all. If you could bottle the “team effect” that embraces the Beach Relay team you’d be rich;
individually we battle to get past the quarter-finals, but our relay team comes out and blows away more fancied Clubs and we’re getting closer to Cronulla each year. Winning the Semi-final at state by the 50m and getting disqualified was one of the heartbreaking moments for the season as you would have got Silver based on your form. Here’s to more of the same when we start up again in October...... in the meantime, see you at Bellingara for some Penalty, Pass or Shot action.
Josh and Paul
Under 12 Boys The under 12 Boys continued to build on their last season with some impressive results again this year. It was great to see the boys regularly making finals and getting medals in nearly all Carnivals they competed in this year. There were many highlights thoughout the year; however as their Age Manager the one that impressed me the most was to see how they boys bounced back from their showing at Sydney Branch in the State Titles. It would be fair to say the boys didn’t perform as their parent and I would expect at Sydney Branch; however their maturity, attitude and commitment to each other was on show for all to see at the State Titles and made me as a father and an Age Manager very proud. There were medals won by nearly all the boys at various Carnivals; however there were some big individual achievements, that don’t always win medals that need to be noted. Firstly Nath Jay for making the final of the individual swim, in a hot field at State and finishing inside the top 20. Next Kane Baratta for making his 1st individual final ever in the board at Sydney Water and our newest competitor Scott Purves for picking up a medal in his 1st year at the 4 Way. I would like to again thank Ross and Mick for their help during the year. Mel, Chris and
Troy for volunteering for water safety and all the parents, trainers, volunteers, committee members for their support of the boys and making Wanda such a great Club to be part of. As the boys move into their penultimate season of Nippers, it will be great to see them crack it for that elusive medal at the State Titles; however if that is not the case, remember boys it’s all about having the right attitude, giving it your best and competing in a friendly and fair manner and you will always be winners. I look forward to seeing you all next season. Cheers
Justin
Under 13 Girls What a fantastic season we have had. Our team of 18 is stronger than ever. We welcomed four new players this season - Jasmine, Chloe, Ashlyn and Emily (up from Coward’s Corner to show us how it’s done). At a challenging age these girls have moulded seamlessly into our group. The bond between our girls is beautiful and they have continued fantastic friendships during and out of the Nipper season. Their camaraderie and sportsmanship is second to none and their enthusiasm is contagious. As always, within a season we learn many things not only by listening but also by observing situations, our peers and mentors. Learning and developing relationships is a healthy and important part of Nippers. As a team; you have watched, listened (most of the time) and shown courage, determination and commitment in many situations, not only in competition but also in the week to week sessions. To win is not always about a coming first – it is about challenging

Under 13 Boys “The Purple People Eaters” What a great season for our little age group!!
yourself, achieving a little milestone each and every time you attempt something. Well done to all of you. The season was full of fun Carnivals and activities including the Big Board Bounty, the Ohana Carnival, the U13 Development Camp which saw the Wanda girls win the Tube Rescue challenge against all the other Clubs in the Branch. We also competed beyond expectations in the 4-Way Carnival smashing the other Bate Bay Clubs. Sydney Water was also well attended by our girls and great accolades to Brooke being selected in the Interbranch Carnival teaming up with the well known Summer Walker. Mmm!! We had great success in the Branch Carnival and saw some great achievements for all the girls who, in challenging and uncomfortable conditions, competed well. Fantastic results with Ashley 2nd in the swim, Brooke 3rd in the Board and Emily, who we now claim as our own, took out the Ironperson in great style. And, did I mention that Annika and Emily won Boardriders coming first and second. Finally, the culmination of all the hard training saw our team finally medal at the State Carnival. Again, challenging conditions causing havoc with programming of events but, all worth it, taking home a Bronze Medal in both the Board Relay and the Surf Teams and fantastic positions gained by all our girls. It was an absolute pleasure to witness the efforts of the girls and a very proud moment for our entire team. We have gone from strength to strength and the girls are very excited about backing up next year. Bring it on!! This season we have also seen the resurrection of an R&R team. With great
efforts by Pauline to bring the girls together, JD has set his sights high for Sarah, Eloise, Issy, Gemma and Emma who have committed to the art of R&R. Under JD’s watchful eye they will perfect their discipline and we will see them compete next year in Branch and State. Go girls. We also have three members from our group in the March Past Team. They will continue to learn their skills and compete – good luck Gemma, Issy and Jade Along with all the girls, it is fantastic to see so many of the parents getting involved in so many areas: Water Safety, IRB, BBQ & Beach Setup helpers, Uniforms, Committee Members, Donations, Trivia Night. It is amazing to see so many embracing our Club and the Club spirit. WANDA can only be as good as the volunteers that take it on otherwise, without you, the Club is nothing. Thank you all for your help, support and patience. Finally, a huge thank you to Pauline once again for keeping all of you informed and me organised. Pauline is and will be an invaluable asset going forward in the U14s. It’s bye for now, but please take a moment to reflect on the time and efforts of so many in the Club that have helped your child - Dean, Rossie, Dave just to name a few.
Julie
Whilst we have endeavored at all times to instill ocean awareness, camaraderie and fairness, I wish this year to emphasis how well the boys competed at every level from the 4-Way to State. It was great to see the boys get some rewards for all the years of dedication, effort and hard work. Although as always is the case in competition there will be disappointments, the boys should hold their head up high with their results. A special mention must go to Luke Sothern, Adam Moriatis, Joel Paton, Blake Paton and Nathan Rohr for representing the Club with pride and sportsmanship whilst making numerous finals and Nath winning our first State individual medal. I was thrilled to see the joy on all their faces with their achievements.
As always nothing would happen without the support and dedication of the parents. I hope you have seen positive development in your young man from being a part of surf life saving. Special thanks to Patrick Managreve, Adam Buckley and James Moriatis for putting their hand up to help out. I wish everyone a safe 2014 and hope to see you for our final year at Wanda JAG. Remember if you work hard and do your best you never know what might happen. All the best,
Tony
Under 14 Girls Well 14 Girls your Nipper years are officially over and it has been a pleasure to watch many of you develop from little Nippers in under 6s to young ladies today and I look forward to you continuing your enjoyment into seniors with under 15s and further using those surf skills. As stated a lot of you have been around since under 6s and I have watched you get scared of big surf, complain about many things, laugh together, muck around, not listen to instructions on reading surf conditions, scream & cry but you all showed how to overcome your fears and encourage each other, to remain close friends and build friendships that will last forever which is very pleasing to Louise & myself. The Competition in 2013/14 - well nothing was more pleasing than Elly, Georgia & Maddy H winning GOLD in BRANCH board relay followed up GOLD at STATE by Elly & Maddy who managed to sneak into the Board Rescue final and absolutely win by a country mile from our neighbours who had been undefeated during the season. Maddy H & Maddy R reaching Swim Final, Ella on reaching semis for State Sprint & Alexia reaching Sprint / Flags finals at Branch & Quarters State and finally Olivia for getting back to competing at Branch / state after horrific car accident. Special congratulations to Shelby (Girls Club Captain) and Olivia (Assistant). To my Age Manager Assistant Louise Southwell who without her assistance during Sunday mornings when I was absent on many occasions for organising the girls - a massive thanks. Thanks to all the parents that helped out fund raising this year for the U/14 trip to
Tallebudgera Sport and Recreation which was very successful & enjoyable, with beach set up on Sunday Mornings, BBQ duties throughout the years and commuting the Girls around to training & Carnivals during the years, To the Water safety, IRB crew, Beach & Water Co-ordinators for outstanding efforts during the season.
was the lead singer on the Saturday night with Ethan, Kurt, Tyler and Hudson singing along. It was awesome to see Tyler watching Snapper Rock go off, he just loves the surf. Kai had the eye of the girls and the life of the party, Nathan, had Mark Smith’s close eye on him. The boys had an excellent time and were a pleasure to have on the trip. Thank you to the parents who helped with the fund raising as well as Mark Smith and Hayden Berry for coming on the trip. Thanks also to Brett Taper and Louise Southwell (U14 Girls) for partnering with us in making the trip so happy and memorable. This was a great way for the U14’s to finish up Nippers and transition into the Senior Club.
To Brett Furniss for your endless hours and time putting all competitors and our girls through SRC & other SLS courses. To Dean McMahon/Kenny Smith & Kurtis Smith putting in the hours surf training the kids to improve their surf skills which has improved results across all age groups and finally to Steve & the Committee we appreciate all your time & effort running the successful JAG.
The boys excelled in competition again this year. As a snap shot, at the State Titles, the Beach Relay team (Jamee, Ethan, Hudson and Kurt) won gold again, with Jamee and Hudson also winning Bronze at the Senior State Titles for the Beach Relay as well. What an effort. The Swim Team came forth by three points and both Cameron Teams made the finals finishing within two places of each other. Brayden, Nathan, Kai and Ethan improved out of sight. Ethan came seventh in the state individual sprint final and Brayden made the final for the Surf Race at both Junior and Senior State. Jack was memorable in each of the 2 km Runs.
I looking forward to you girls progressing on to the Senior Club. Thanks for the memories.
Brett
Under 14 Boys The U14 boys had a great time during their last season of Nippers, joining the girls each week to participate in fundraising for the end of season trip away. All of the group confidently took on the role of helping with the younger age groups. The boys really came out of their shells this year. Nathan was the life of the group both at fund raising and also on the trip. Kurt lived the values of Wanda Surf Club as junior Club Captain, representing the Club well at Carnivals whilst mentoring and leading the younger age groups week in week out. Tyler was a role model for the younger age groups in the Club as Vice-Captain. On the end of season trip, Kyle stood out with his unique hat and cheeky laugh. Jamee was part of the fun and always responsible. Brayden
Wanda Surf Life Saving Club are very lucky to have such a strong team, who have grown together over the last nine seasons and following a fantastic last season as Nippers, are stronger than ever, as a team, to play a large part in the Senior Club. I am honoured to have been their Age Manager for the nine seasons and with Mark Smith over the last few years, thanks Mark.

Director of Surf Sports Report It gives me great pleasure to report that Wanda SLSC had another successful year in competition. When you take the time to look back at the seasons highlights, our results at the Australian Championships and excellent results at NSW State and Sydney Branch Championships, you realise what a great season Wanda had. These results are highlighted in the Sectional Captains reports. Each Captain should be congratulated on their efforts. There are many reasons why our Club is strong competitively and there are always ways we can improve. The success mainly relies on many members joining together as a team to support the training, competitive aspirations and well being of our competition members.
Here are a few of our great results this season; ■■
■■
■■
2nd Sydney Branch behind North Cronulla. Winning the Ohana Taplin Relay, the team consisted of Michael Georgaris, Danielle McMahon, Cameron Pyett, Izaak Smith, Maddie Taper and John Woods. 3rd State, what an outstanding result from our Team, behind Newport and Manly.
At Aussies we were light in numbers but not in spirit, everyone competed to their outmost. Well deserved Gold medals to Jay Furniss the U19 Male Swim and Ali Najem in U19 Male 2km Run, U19 Female Rescue Tube Rescue Team and the 5 Person R&R. We had eight representatives in the winning Sydney Branch Team at Interbranch Carnival. Mitchell Allum, Nick Fox, Jay Furniss, James Karagiannis, Danielle McMahon, Taylar Puskaric, Izaak Smith, Tate Wilkins Congratulations to Jay Furniss and Taylar Puskaric in their selection in New South Wales Interstate Team and John Woods for representing the Northern Territory. Scott Benson, our Boat Captain has been hard at work this season, recruiting new members and nurturing our U17 Boat crews and we look forward to seeing them compete next season.
Chris Fox
We need to give a special thanks to our “duck” drivers and crews, Sam, Steve and Smokey and all those that helped out. The members that officiate at the Carnivals, without your support we would not be able to compete and have such great results. The patrolling members, who keep the beaches safe and fill in to allow our competitors to go to Carnivals, thank you. I must thank the members of the Competition Committee for their assistance and support, also a special thanks to their families for letting husbands/dads/wives/ girlfriends be involved. Anita and the Board of Directors, thank you all for your support of the Surf Sports Committee members. Lastly, I must commend our competitors on their performances and the way in which you always “lift” for a team event. This is the true Wanda Spirit. Looking forward to seeing you all on the beach next season.

Under-15 Organiser’s Report This year the U15’s were a small but competitive group who were bolstered by the U14 Nippers after gentle persuasion! First up this season, was State and Aussie Pool Rescue with Lauren McMahon, Kurt Stavrou, Tyler Nott, Nathan Clarke, Maddy Haywood all achieving fantastic results. State highlights include Kurt 1st and Nathan 2nd Brick Carry, Lauren 3rd 50 Manikin Carry, Tyler 1st 50 Patient Tow. Aussies saw Lauren come 2nd in the 50 Manikin Carry in a time that broke the record. The U14’s had some great individual results at Branch especially in the 2km with a 1st place for Elly O’Donoghue. In the water, Tyler Nott competed in the Surf Board Riding and would be very proud of his 3rd place. Maddy Haywood also placed a respectable 3rd in the Tube Rescue. The beachies backed up from Branch to perform equally well at State. The 2km
Run saw Josh placing 1st and Elly 3rd while the Sprint Relay Team consisting of Hudson Berry, Dane Cooper, Josh Fernandes and Jamee Smith (2 of which were U/14 Boys) also excelled to come away with a 2nd place, a fantastic result considering 3 of the 4 members are U14’s. In the water, Britney Pierce had an outstanding State Carnival and came away with a 2nd in the Surf Race and 2nd Tube Rescue. She also competed in the Cameron with Lucy Furniss, Lauren McMahon and Elly O’Donoghue for a respectable 4th placing. Lauren, Lucy & Britney managed a 6th place for the Board Relay and 5th in the Swim Teams which included Maddy, Britney, Lucy and Lauren. Josh, Elly, Tyler and Lauren made the trek to Perth for Aussies and had great success continuing their good form. The first event for this age group was Surf Board Riding and after much confusion with starting times and places, Tyler was able to surf his way into the finals and came 4th! Great result Tyler.
Elly managed to beat off the long lanky U15’s in the 2km to come away with an amazing 3rd place!! Josh also ran a great race and placed 5th! Lauren was on fire and made the final of the Swim and semifinals of the Ironman, Board and also the Board Rescue with Elly. Credit must be given to Tate Wilkins, Jock Campbell, Wayne Owen, Mark Reilly and Mark Smith for the excellent beach results, thanks guys. The water coaches must also get a mention including Evo, Kirsty May, Scotty and Greg Pierce. The great results in the pool wouldn’t have been achieved without the expert tuition of Blake McCrindle. I hope to see you all stay involved with Wanda and look forward to watching you improve next season in whatever discipline you choose.

Under-19 Organiser’s Report Here we are at the end of another great season. It has been another great year for this small group of athletes. I would like to congratulate every member for their fantastic efforts. At Branch, State and Aussies we achieved some outstanding results. I think every member came home with a medal. Our highlight of the season was our long
haul to Western Australia for the Aussie Titles. With a small team of athletes the U/19’s took home the bulk of the medals for Wanda. They had 3 of Wanda’s 4 Gold medals 2 individual, U/19 Surf Race Jay Furniss and U/19 2Km Beach Run Ali Najem. The other team Gold medal to U/19 women’s Rescue Tube Rescue – Taylar Puskaric, Danielle McMahon, Izel Tuncer and Abbey Schott. You should all be very proud to achieve outstanding results. With Jay,Taylar and Ali moving onto the opens next season I am sure these fine young athletes will be a force in the future I wish them all the best.
Brett Furniss
Thanks for a great season it has been a great honour to be at all Carnivals with you. A big thank you for the support of the management and competition staff.

Beach Captain’s Report Another season gone; another season of exciting growth for the beach team!
Peter Axiotis and Matthew Peterie
Being my second season as Beach Captain, this year continued the trend of increasing our overall numbers but also took the step of improving our results at the major Carnivals of State and Australian Titles. Most pleasing, however, is the culture and the comaraderie of the beach team which is going from strength to strength – team BBQ’s, track and beach training sessions, bulking in the gym, going to Carnivals as a team, Towradgi burgers (junior burger for Pete) and an enjoyable Christmas trip to Jamberoo Water Park. The more we get involved; the more success and enjoyment we will continue to have.
Jake Smith
This season saw the addition of some valuable team members who have brought a new dynamic to the training environment. James Karagiannis really excelled with a new training focus and should be commended for his outstanding results. Eve Neilson had a Carnival debut she will laugh about for years to come - but from there until State improved out of sight and will be a valuable asset to the 17’s Beach Relay. Elly O’Donoghue and Emma Brown both proved what years of consistent training can really achieve. Clayton Beranek (Stephen Version 2.0), well, no one really knows where this guy came from but after beating us all in track training, I can’t wait to see him adapt to the sand. I think even Tyler Harding made a cameo this year! This season saw a stronger emphasis of competing at Carnivals; starting earlier with the Sydney Water Premiership and continuing through to a number of newly contested local Carnivals – something we will continue to push next year. Unfortunately, the increased workload (or lack of flexibility?) is a goal we need to work on to manage injuries. Dean Reilly has been on the cusp of the Australian sprint final for years and was running better than ever. Stephen Holbeach fought back from a freak soccer accident and was running the fastest times in the team. Jake Smith has the best flag turn in the squad. These guys have more potential than anyone and an injury free season is just around the corner, keep persisting. For the second year now we have had the U/14 Nippers training with the senior squad and the fruits of this decision have now taken effect. Josh Fernandes and Dane Cooper were joined by Nippers Jamee Smith and Hudson Berry and despite their age gap brought home a silver medal in the Beach Relay at State. It should also be noted the Nippers combined with Kurt Stavrou and Ethan Wikeepa to win the Nipper State Title for the 4th year in a row. More importantly, the boys relished training with the older guys and there is a strong pathway now for all Nippers who are interested in not just fun competition but overall development as young adults. No one embodies this more than the originally shy and awkward Josh Fernandes. Josh started with us last year, picked up an encouraging 6th at state,
Tate Wilkins
worked hard, matured and became the confident State Champion this year. You are the example of what this squad is about and why I will continue to be Beach Captain. While our numbers in the females continues to be a work in progress, the girls we do have are a core group of quality runners and quality people. Both our 17’s and Open’s Beach Relay Teams contested the State Final; were right in the mix mid race and
Stephen Holbeach
was their best run as a team all year. All girls were among the most consistent trainers, improved more than anyone else and bring a lot to the team environment. It takes many years to become fully accustomed to running on the sand and everyone in the group would love to have you continue. Conversely, our open men’s section has definitely reached its highest levels for a long time in participation. A true testament to this was having 2 relay teams in the final of the Open Beach Relay at State. In fact, both teams were in the top 4 on the final change until Dean’s hamstring gave way. To me, depth is a real sign of strength so I thank all the guys for getting involved so much – I can’t wait to have 8 Wanda men
Wanda Beach Team
all flexing on the podium at State for the relay next year! The placegetters for Branch, State and Australian Titles are already listed elsewhere in this report so I won’t repeat those again. However, it is no fluke that those major individual medal winners were the ones who trained the hardest and most consistently throughout the year. These include: Ali Najem, Mitch Palmer, Emily Rohr, Elly O’Donoghue and Josh Fernandes in the 2km Running with Matt Lewis, James Karagiannis and Peter Axiotis in the sprint events. Special mention must be made to Ali Najem who was undefeated all season except for one race where he was racing in the Open’s at Aussies and still placed 3rd! In addition to this, Ali won both the 19’s and Opens 2km at State and won the 19’s in Perth – Australian Champion! You’ve earned it more than anyone.
has really stepped up his commitment in the last 2 years. The amount of planning and organising behind all the scheduled sessions is second to none. Our training has increased to almost 10 months a year and 5-6 sessions a week and Wayne does all this without any family connection to the Club. I know words are cheap but the entire beach team is over the moon having you involved and realise all this success wouldn’t have come close without your involvement. The same can be said about Jock Campbell coaching the 2km Runners. Jock is the ultimate professional and his energy and passion for helping the athletes is rubbing off on the whole squad. Wanda as a club can really use someone of your status and
skillset in the future and I thank you for putting in all this time with a young family. Lastly, thank you to all the parents and to all the competitors for simply ‘getting amongst it’. Even if you didn’t win a State or Australian medal personally, you should realise that without your support and involvement, those top athletes wouldn’t have reached those heights. Our medals are won as a squad. YOU are the difference. Let’s keep getting involved, keeping fit and having fun while we are young. See you all next season!
Tate Wilkins Beach Captain
Still being a competitor, it is easy for me to attend training and organise a few things. However, the real credit must be paid to our Beach Coaches. Thank you to Mark Reilly for becoming our specialist Relay Coach this season. To have someone to give specific changing technique advice gives us a distinct advantage over other Clubs and allows our other coaches to focus on what they do best.

Swim Captain’s Report As another season has drawn to a close and I am happy to report that the 2013/2014 season has been another successful year for the Swim Section. Once again, the Swim Section has enjoyed success in individual and team events at local Carnivals, Branch, State and Aussies. The depth of our Club’s swim section was on display at this season’s Bate Bay Interclub Championships. The Swim Section dominated across all the swim events held on the day. The Swim Section also took out the coveted 12-a-side following a tremendous swim by Mitchell ‘Mini’ Allum in the final leg of the race. Overall, the Club performed very well at the State Championships in Umina. Izaak Smith had an outstanding Carnival and is the State Under 17 Belt Race Champion. Izaak also finished 3rd in the Rescue Tube Race. Jay Furniss won the Under 19 Male Surf Race and finished 3rd in the Under 19 Belt Race.
Britney Pierce had a fantastic Carnival and was the standout swim competitor in her age group. Britney finished 2nd in the Under 15 Female Surf Race and 2nd in the Rescue Tube Rescue. Taylar Puskaric also swam consistently and finished 3rd in the Under 19 Surf Race. In his first year racing in the Under 17 age group, Keegan Mason had a fantastic swim and finished 6th in the Surf Race. New member to the Club, Cameron Pyett also swam very well and finished 6th in the Restricted Surf Race. Wanda competed very well across all Swim Team events held at State. Congratulations to the Under 19 Female Rescue Tube Rescue team consisting of Taylar Puskaric, Danielle McMahon, Georgie Woods and Izel Tuncer who are the State champions. The Club was fortunate enough to be able to field two teams in the Under 19 Surf Teams Event. The teams finished third and fourth. Well done girls. The Under 15 Female Surf Team consisting of Maddelyn Haywood, Lauren McMahon, Lucy Furniss and Britney Pierce finished 5th in the Surf Teams Event. The Under 19 Male Rescue Tube Rescue Team consisting of Jay Furniss, Izaak Smith, Keegan Mason and Jake Smith also finished 5th. Although Wanda’s Aussies Touring Team was smaller than usual this season, the Swim Section had another successful year
Izaak Smith - NSW U/17 Belt Champion
at Aussies. A huge round of applause has to be given to Jay Furniss who is the Australian Under 19 Male Surf Race Champion! Jay also finished 3rd in the Under 19 Belt Race Taylar Puskaric also had a good Carnival finishing 5th in the Under 19 Female Surf Race and in making the Open Women’s Belt Race Final. The Club is very fortunate to have a number of female competitors in the Under 19 age group. Individually and in team events the Under 19 girls have performed consistently throughout the season and Aussies was no exception. I am very proud to announce that for the second year running, Wanda has won the Under 19 Female Rescue Tube Rescue Race. Congratulations to Taylar Puskaric, Danielle McMahon, Abbey Schott and Izel Tuncer. It was a wonderful albeit nerve racking race to watch. The Swim Section’s fantastic results could not be achieved without the support of the Club, Competition Committee, Team Managers, Coaches and parents. I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support and assistance. I would also like to thank all our members who assisted with the Belt Races this season; you all did a great job. Finally, thank you to all the Swim Section competitors who have made this season so enjoyable and rewarding. Your commitment to training has enabled you to perform so well this season. Speaking of training, I trust that all Swim Section competitors are already back chasing the black line back and forth in the swimming pool ….. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe winter and I look forward to seeing you all next season

2km Beach Run Report
44
There is so much athletic talent in Wanda’s existing members that several of the rough diamonds are right under our noses. This year three new 2km Beach Runners who were already members showed great promise.
Strengths consistency of training, good at several distances, part lunatic, good on all surfaces, doesn’t drink alcohol; oxygen requirements post race has decreased Weaknesses- a complete lunatic, choice of music, his goatee beard ■■
Our numbers are gradually growing, again however we had a small, but very talented crew this year and gained some solid results. Again it was one of the most enjoyable season’s I have had at the Surf Club. Last season in the annual report I set this challenge down to our runners “The challenge I’m setting for next season is 5 national medals next year, with at least 2 Gold’s. I can’t wait, lets go get some!” We didn’t get the 5, only 4 with 2 gold’s, so not a bad season really. After last year’s athlete rating system, it’s back by popular demand; well I think two people liked it. Jock’s Rating of Athlete’s (non-scientific) ■■
Ali Najem – 2 State Gold’s, 1 Aussie Gold and an Aussie Bronze in the opens, a new national champion, enough said!
■■
Mitch Palmer - Mitch is a fantastic raw talent, who doesn’t realise his own ability. Mitch is a very enjoyable part of our training group. Won his first medal at State with a third & ran an inspiring National final to come 4th Strengths – improved training consistency this year, relaxed nature and exceptional raw talent. The girls tell me his abs are pretty good Weaknesses – Hairstyle, ability to pose for a normal photo, tardiness Josh Fernandes – A very talented runner on the track and developing into that on the sand. After not finishing his first event, Josh has come back and gained some great results. Culminating in a great win at the State Titles in the U15’s. Strengths – great speed, and fast on the hard sand Weaknesses – needs to work on his soft sand efficiency
Jock Campbell ■■
■■
■■
Jock Campbell - great runner, great bloke, best coach, superb athlete, really could have been a male model or a hand model! Strengths- fashion sense, hairstyle, personality, biceps, and the Cavorka Weaknesses - zero, nil, none Matt Peterie – still the enigma! Matt would occasionally race and occasionally we’d see him in the distance at training. Strengths - good raw talent Weaknesses – got stuck on the toilet at Branch and missed the race
New Additions ■■
■■
Ali Najem, Mitchell Palmer, Josh Fernandes and Elly O’Donoghue
Emily Rohr - exceptional on hard sand and track and great to see Emily running regularly for the Club. Coming good on soft sand and on her way back to full fitness. A very solid 2nd at State. Strengths - great on track and hard sand, always runs with a smile on her face, very determined to win Aussie Gold next season Weaknesses – Chooses Hawaii over Aussies
Elly O’Donoghue – I have been waiting for Elly to turn 13 for 6 years, so she could finally run in the U15’s 2km. She didn’t let me down, from Nippers straight into winning medals 3rd at State and Nationals Strengths – Fierce competitor and a great kid Weaknesses – Swimming, board training, netball and touch all get in the way of her running, apparently Ellanor is good at them all. Emma Brown – A great new edition to our team, quiet and unassuming with a big ticker and good talent. Strengths – excellent on the soft sand, extremely consistent with training Weaknesses – Speed, and her parents forgetting about her (or so she says)
■■
John Woods – A real surprise packet, has exceptional speed for a swimmer and although only did a couple of races showed that he could be anything. Strengths – Great speed over the first km, good on soft sand Weaknesses – Swimming, and the ball toss, apparently good at these sports, which he chooses over the 2km Blue Ribbon event (it’s bigger than the ironman you know)
We had a real team atmosphere at training and races amongst the Club. This was much to do with many of the iron-people joining in our sessions during the season, which helped build great camaraderie amongst the Club. It’s great to see everyone happy with each other’s success and the spirit and culture developing amongst the Club.
Aussies Start Open Mens Ali & Mitch front and centre
The Beachies also did a number of rescues during afternoon training sessions this year, which may not be anything special for most of the Club, but for the Beachies that’s something special. One
particular rescue that Ali, Mitchy Palmer and myself did that really saved some lives was something to remember. Another really enjoyable season with only
The challenge I’m setting for next season is a gold medal at Worlds and 5 national medals next year, with at least 2 Gold’s.

R&R Reports Open Male and Open Mixed R&R Teams Congratulations to the Open Male 5 Person R&R team on your Australian Championship Gold. We have not won this event since 2010 and the pressure was on to prevent Freshwater repeating the four-in-a-row won by the Wanda 6 Person Team in the 80’s and the Bondi female team a few years ago.
Considering Kurt Melville’s dominance over the past ten years and his shoulder injury, I think the belt swim he put in at Perth was probably his most impressive, holding off a fast finisher over ten years younger than him. But as we’ve found out in the past, the Gold Medal can’t be won without the work on the beach and it’s a credit to Blake McCrindle, Grant Sandstrom, Brock Douglas and Stuart Smith that they put the right training in at the right time and nailed the first section. With nine Golds at Aussies, Brock is now one of the top five R&R competitors of all time, just one behind Col Ricketts and two behind Bondi’s Nick Nezval.
Mixed R&R Team
and although we improved on our results from Branch and State, we did not quite get there at the Aussies. However, second is still a great effort, well done. A special mention must go to Stuart Smith, who, despite all the extra training sessions fine-tuning his drill work on the beach, was the first person to nominate for whatever position best suited the team in Perth. Thanks also to John Douglas for helping us out on the final weekend before Aussies.
Yvonne also joined Paula Cox, Solly, Col, J D, Brock, Steve Stavrou, Smokey, Sam Axiotis, Belly and I in running the R&R areas from the Nipper 4-way to the Aussies.
The Open Mixed 5 Person Team proved to be our most improved and consistent during the year, winning Branch and coming third at State. Grace and Luisa competed at State with Glenn Bell, Stuart and Blake. Training sessions were challenging, so I thank Grace and Luisa for their commitment together with our president Anita Pryke and firsttimer Yvonne Holland.
Coach
We were joined at the Aussies by Kurt Melville’s and Stuart Smith’s partners and our chief motivator Wendy Sandstrom. Thank you to all of the families for letting us concentrate on R&R when it really counted.
Gordon McKirdy
The introduction of Yvonne to R&R led to a new sponsor in her husband,Tony, from TWH Transport. Tony’s enthusiasm has no limits and, together with Glenn, they made sure our reels, tents and trailer received special attention. Our teams really appreciated their efforts. Also thanks again to Anne Caterson for leading us through another season. Open Male R&R Team
Unfortunately, the 6 Person Team never had a chance to train properly as our patient from last year’s winning team started employment overseas in January. Various fill-ins were used and I’d like to thank Grace Sheridan, Luisa Backhouse, Ebony Green and Emily Caterson for their help during the year. The coach joined the team in Perth Wanda R&R Teams

State - Fourth
The team came very close to a medal at the State Titles. This translates to true potential. All we have to do is focus more at traning and you will medal. Next season prior to our first training we have to make the commitment to turn up for training on time, leave our phones with a parent and concentrate for the hour. We will then be on the dias where we belong. Wanda R&R Girls

State Titles - U19 Forth Open Womens - Fifth
A difficult season for the girls with four completing their Higher School Certificate and Katelyn preparing to complete it at the end of 2014. Consequently we only trained one day a week. However, the girls performed exceptionally well at the State Titles qualifying to the final in second place but unfortunately finished fourth. This was no mean feat as the third team went on to win two Australian Titles. To me this was the best I had seen them perform and I honestly believe they would have medalled if they had gone to the Aussies. Maybe next year.
Again Katelyn and Joanna Axiotis were very efficient on line and resuscitation, Joanna Stavrou showed strength and accuracy on the Reel. Emily Caterson had her best season. Emily`s drill could not be faulted and she never failed to bring out a big swim at the major events. Our good mate Ebony Green also drilled well and effortlessly made the bouys when competing. A big thank you to the Mums and Dads for their support and also to Anne Caterson for taking on the role of R & R Captain.
Taylar Phillips’ drilling and belt swimming was again first class and will further improve next season. I would like to thank Patrick Jones for his help and for looking after the reel between Carnivals. Also a big thank you to the Mums and Dads for their support in bringing the girls to training and the Carnivals. I am enjoying the break and look forward to a successful 2014/15 season.

Katelyn I wish you all the best for the HSC. After the winter break we cannot only look at competing in the 5 Person but also the 6 Person. Have a good break and I will see you next season.

2013 Sutherland to Surf “42nd Year” It just gets bigger and better. The 42nd S2S was, I believe our best ever to date. We have come a long way since 1972 when we ran our first S2S with over 50 Competitors. The S2S Fun Run now attracts a crowd of over 8,000 and this gets bigger each year.
The popular Run 4 Life Running Magazine classifies the S2S as a major running event on the Calendar in Australia and uses the place getters for their Championship points score. This year’s Tradies Ansto Pro Sprint was won by London Olympic Marathan Runner Michael Shelly in a time of 31.59, 2nd was Thomas De Canto 32.55, 3rd was Jack Colreary 33.10 and 4th previous winner Gemechu Woyechu.
Mick Brannock
Michael was presented with a cheque for $1,000 plus the Andrew Lloyd perpetual trophy.
Michael Shelly
Also receiving $1,000 and the Kenyn McCann trophy was past winner Belinda Martin who ran a 37.50, 2nd was Milly Clarke 38.02, Fleur Fallnery third 38.46 and Lara James 38.56 4th. Our first Club Member to finish was Ali Najem who came 12th 36.29. In our new category the Veolia Water Youth ( 16 and under ) the winner was Hamish Wallace who came 14th overall in a time of 36.32. Financially the day was very successful for our Club but what a lot of people don’t realise is that through the Every Day Hero link we now help raise thousands of dollars for many other Charities.
Special thanks to my co-ordinator Anne Caterson for her hard work liaising with Police, SES, RTA, Council, Ambos etc Trevor Elliott finance, Gay Curtis sponsorship, Chris Stephenson timing, Sue Brannock clothing and all the Club members for manning the intersections, delivery of barricades, late entries and the many other chores that make the S2S a success. The S2S is very expensive event to run but what makes it easier for us is the generosity of our many sponsors – Thank You. Looking forward to another successful S2S in 2014.

Master’s Report My first season as the Master’s Captain was a steep learning curve, I found grown men can’t make decisions, selecting a team requires a mathematics degree and old men get injured. From the start it was going to be a difficult season for many of the elderly statesman, the masters branch was held at Coogee Beach traditionally known for no waves or parking, State Championships was a timetable debacle and the Australian titles were held in Perth. With assistance from Chris Iredale we formulated some good teams at Umina Beach with the entertainment provided
Mike Mead, Paul Buttel, Troy Ryan and Peter Meyer
by Troy Ryan. The best result in the water was Andrew de Vries surf team swim. A long way behind was myself and Spider Brannock. On the board Joel Bolewski, Chris Iredale and Peter Meyer were placed 2nd in the Board Relay (Peter is still walking Cronulla mall with his medal around his neck). On the beach, Scott McMaster ran the 2km and Jock Campbell placed 2nd. Some good results were also had by Ironman legend Paul Buttel (3rd), Kenny Smith, Luke Turner and Michael Mead.
At the Aussies the Club numbers were disappointingly low with approximately 30 competitors attending the Carnival in Master and Open Events, however the best were sent and Wanda masters 12 points came in the form of gold from two dedicated competitors. Jock Campbell in the 2km Run and Michael Georgaris Jnr on the Ski. A great achievement for both. I hope the masters can continue to grow at the Gold Coast Aussies next season.

Boat Captain’s Report It’s been a long time away from Wanda, but definitely good to be back. Somethings don’t change though, and when we began the season a few familiar heads popped up to help out. With seven new members joining the Club and a couple of existing juniors, this became the core of the “ Baby Boaties “. Due to age restrictions, the boys were only able to gain an exemption to compete in one Carnival, The Garie Dash. On the day the boys rowed well and were unlucky not to make the final. They gave the older and more experienced crews a good run for their money, even beating last season’s Junior State Champions in 2 of their heats. Not a bad effort considering they had never done a buoy turn until that morning and had only learnt how to do a beach start the day before.
Next season is looking good, an invitation has been extended to the four Bate Bay Clubs to compete in The South Coast Surfboat Series. At this year’s Aussie Titles the winners from the Open Mens, U23 Girls & U19 men and runners up in Open Women & Reserve Mens divisions all came from the South Coast Series. This will provide the crews with plenty of solid racing throughout the season. Regardless of the upcoming cold weather, we will be training throughout Winter. Juniors on Saturday mornings and Seniors on Sunday. Next season we will see the return of Nathan Spinner to Wanda SLSC and the introduction of an U/14 Development Team. We are also looking to put together an U23’s girls crew, so if you would like to come down and have a go without your R & R coach or Board & Ski coach finding out, just let me know. As seasons pass so do our boats, this year we said farewell to “The Mick Brannock”, a
Jack Kenning & Cooper Harris
boat that has had more than a few wins to its credit. A big thank you to both our sponsors, the Sutherland United Services Club and The Shire..Local Banking (formerly Sutherland Credit Union) for your ongoing support over the years. I’d also like to thank the following people for their help and support throughout the season, Geoff Young, Rod Holdsworth, Les Townsend and by no means last Ron Doolan. Looking forward to next season

Touring Team Manager’s Report A call from Scotty one morning mid-February, “Hey, Sorrento, would you be interested in doing the Team Manager’s job for the Aussies?” There was only one possible response, “Of course!” For those that don’t know me, I am Brenton Rose (aka Sorrento) and have been a long time member with Wanda since my late teens. But in recent years have moved back to my original home town Perth to live. Hence the call from Scotty! As everyone is aware, after the Aussies being back on the Gold Coast for the past 4 years, they ventured west again to Scarborough Beach in Western Australia, for a one off performance. The overall size of the touring team this year was probably the smallest I have experienced, with only approximately 40 competitors (inclusive of the march past). But the calibre of the competitors that did go was by no means diminished. And this shone through in the results attained – 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze in the Open Carnival, and 2 Gold in the Masters Carnival. In the Open Carnival Wanda were represented in a total of 26 Finals – truly an amazing effort from such a small team.
I am sure that the individual medal winners and finalists will be well covered by each of the sectional Captains in this Annual Report, but I do wish to make mention of a few results which I consider to be absolute highlights from the Carnival. The U/19 Female Rescue Tube Rescue Gold won by Danielle, Taylar, Abbey and Izel. These four girls were amazing for the whole of the Carnival, they kicked it off on the Thursday winning our first medal, and pretty much contested every U/19 event on the program, demonstrating true pride and commitment in representing the Club. Ali Najem, on the Friday morning winning Gold in the U/19 male 2km Run, then backing it up 15 minutes later to take Bronze in the Open male 2km Run. On what is considered to be one of the most testing beaches to run on, Ali’s performances were outstanding. Most impressive for me though, coupled with his results, was Ali’s team spirit, for the whole of the Carnival he was on the beach helping and supporting the other competitors. Wonderful to witness. Jay Furniss, contested a total of 6 finals, cumulating on the Sunday with a totally dominant performance to take the Gold in the U/19 Male Surf Race. The R&R boys – Gordon, Kurt, Brock, Stuart, Blake and Grant, continuing on one of Wanda’s finest traditions bring home the Gold in the 5-Man and Silver in the 6-Man events. These results, along with everyone else’s performances, saw Wanda finish in a very credible 13th place in the pointscore. Of
course though, all of this would not have been possible for everyone behind the scenes. Thank you to Anita, Chris, Carol and Lizzy for all their efforts behind the scenes in the lead up to Aussies, it made my task all the more easier once the Carnival commenced. To everyone that officiated, on the beach and in the IRBs, we all know the competition could not exist without your commitment. The parents, thank you for giving the time, expense and support to enable your children to compete at such a wonderful event. The old boys and other supporters that travelled, it was wonderful to see your faces on the beach, in particularly early on the Friday morning for the 2km Run events, I know the runners appreciated it, and it demonstrated what a true team Wanda is. And finally, to Kirsty-May Morris, Brett Furniss and Rod Holdsworth, thank you for all your assistance on the beach. Everyone, all your efforts combined went towards making the Aussies the success it was for Wanda. And thank you Scotty, Anita and Wanda for asking me to be the Touring Team Manager, it was an honour and privilege to do the role, and give back to the Club that has been at the centre of my life for so long. If asked again, I wouldn’t hesitate to say yes. Thank you.

Board Captain’s Report 2013/14 was very much a season of collaboration for the Wanda Board Team with many academic and employment commitments, and serious injuries arising. Pleasingly there was no shortage of athletes, supporters or parents who put their hand up to help out whenever it was needed. There has been a major shift in the athletes we now have in this section, and subsequently we performed strongly in Open and U/19 ages but could not fill teams in many events for the younger age groups. Witnessing some of the Nippers paddle on a Thursday afternoon, and those that raced in the Senior Club this year I do not believe it will be long before we are strong in this area again. Our performances overall this year were strong with numerous medals won at the State Titles and Aussie finals made. The highlight as the Board Captain for me was Mitchell Allum making the Aussie Open Board Final,
Kirra Jones made the women’s last year and this is an outstanding effort for a small amateur Club like Wanda. It is incredibly difficult to make any Aussie final, the Open Board in my opinion being probably the most difficult. Huge thank you to Greg Pierce who made a major contribution to coaching this year, it is clear to me the board program was followed to the letter and the athletes benefit by having you there. Our senior paddlers in particular Foxy and Mini took training sessions, gave advice and invested their time in the board squad despite it hampering their own training. Thank you gents your loyalty and effort will not be forgotten. Again there were no lives lost on Wanda Beach this surfing season, I would assert the high levels of training and fitness of members of our competition section attribute in some way to this. Each time I walk onto Wanda Beach or attend the Club I often reflect on how lucky we are as a community in the
Kurt Stavrou
Sutherland Shire to have these wonderful young men and women in our Club, putting back into the community as well as balancing their education, employment and attempting to fulfil their own athletic goals. Perhaps those ‘watchdog critics’ who seek to penalise our Club should reflect what they achieved as young people, and the stresses and pressures associated. Finally whilst we had a disjointed season for the reasons outlined above as a group we supported each other, filled in when and where we were required, and competed with distinction at the Championship Carnivals. Regards,
Andrew Evans
Mitchell Allum
March Past Report Another successful year of fun, friendship and fantastic camaraderie with the Wonderful Wanda Women’s March Past Team! Glenn Bell, our Super Coach, needs another medal for his patience in addition to his experience and motivational talks. We had a record number of team members – a full team plus 2 reserves. We welcomed Barb and Donna to our existing team of Anita our Captain, Paula our wonderful, inspirational Manager, Jann our Cleaning Manager, Narelle, Jeanie, Kate, Marg Swimming, Marilyn, Maree, Gyliane and Marg Fishing. We relied and deeply appreciated our
strong, muscle bound “reel bitches” Pete, Ross and Tony to carry the heavy reel. This was the year that gave us our best placing, coming 2nd at the Coogee Carnival. The Carnivals we competed at were: North Cronulla, Wanda, Manly, Maroubra, the State Carnival at Umina and 12 members committed to cross the country to march at the Aussie Titles in Perth. We are women who can appreciate competition but still have a balance of enjoyment and competitiveness. This was evidenced by our choice to conduct a ‘team building wine tour’ during the same time Burning Palms, the National Champions
received swollen ankles, blistered feet and then the Gold Medal. By contrast, we received an appreciation of Western Australian wines and one another’s company at poolside “briefings” and karaoke. If you want fun and adventure and wish to score points for Wanda SLSC come and join the Wonderful Wanda March Past Team!

Pool Rescue Report The 2013 winter season of pool rescue was another great success for the small group of Club members who take part in this side of Surf Lifesaving. The season had many clashes that limited our numbers and the amount of time we could spend preparing for the short season. Being a non-world championship year it was difficult for the older group to stay motivated to want to train and compete in the Winter weather. Pool rescue is the perfect opportunity to create a link between the Nipper and Senior sections of the Club. Both train and race together, with the younger members learning all the skills and techniques from the older members. At the State Championships held at Woy Woy, Wanda put in a very strong effort finishing 2nd behind Terrigal, and in front of Elouera, both of which had teams of a larger size. As the coach, it is always great
to see some of the Nippers having a go at this Carnival and achieving some really good times and even better experience. The team had a lot of success in the relay events, displaying an attitude to get in and have a go for the team as a whole. The Australian Championships were held in Brisbane this season. This limited our numbers, with only 4 Wanda members making the trip. This did not dampen the spirits of the group with some very strong performances, especially from the McMahon sisters, both claiming individual medals.
Danielle McMahon
As always the success of the season would not have occurred without the continued support of parents providing transport, support and most of all food! A big thank you to Virginia McMahon for playing team mum, driver and super official at the Australian Champs, enjoying all the perks of the position. Next season all the competitions are taking place in NSW, with State at Woy Woy and Australian at Olympic Park. Seeing as they are closer, I am hoping for a bigger group, especially from the ever growing Nipper age athletes.
Lauren McMahon
Thanks everyone for your ongoing support, let’s do it again next year, bigger and better.

Director Member Services Wanda SLSC this season has a healthy bank account, facilities that equal most clubs across the country and were placed 3rd at Junior and Senior NSW Championships. Thank you to those who facilitated our success. In 2013/2014 Member Services conducted an open day at Wanda SLSC which provided new members with an insight into Lifesaving, had success in a BRP grant application for an ATV (which will transport IRB’s & patrol equipment), supported club officers in their roles and conducted a member survey to assist Wanda in developing and improving our Club operations for next season and beyond. Wanda members are lucky to be part of such a unique club, Wanda excels across all platforms within Surf Lifesaving and offers members the opportunity to engage in JAG, administration, education, lifesaving, competition, sponsorship, events, IT, international lifesaving as well as socialising with friends and family, so get involved!. To continue our success Wanda needs to have a holistic approach to club operations, encourage better communication, work as a team and most importantly embrace change. Congratulations to our representatives at the Australian Surf Titles including Mitchell

Marriages Our best wishes for a long and happy future together go to: Meegan Farrawell and Geoff Conwell
Due to Service in the Navy and later work commitments and family, Keith was a late starter as far as serving on the Committee of Wanda Surf Lifesaving Club in those early years but he soon made up for this with the boys Ken and Alan joining the Surf Club and wife Shirley becoming President of our Ladies Committee. Keith started at the top as President in 1964, a position he held for 5 years. Hard work, drive and enthusiasm marked Keith’s approach with an ability to motivate and encourage those around him. Keith would speak his mind without fear or favour. After serving as President, Keith spent a number of years on Committee and one of his main achievements was as Conveyor of the Building Committee where his experience in the Building Industry over saw the completion of our 2nd Floor extensions the “Founders Room”. In 1970, Keith was honoured with the naming of a new Surf Boat, the “Keith Garthon” because of Keith’s hard work and commitment to our Surf Club. It was Wanda’s loss when Keith and Family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1979. Keith always called Wanda home and it was Keith’s wish that his ashes would be scattered off Wanda to join his mates and make it his final resting place. An old saying of Keith’s was, It is not what your Club can do for you but what you can do for your Club.

Finance Director’s Report The following Report details the consolidated financial activities of the Wanda Surf Life Saving Club, Junior Activities Group JAG and Ladies Auxiliary for the 2013-2014 Season. The Club is reporting a surplus of $392,183 for the year, representing the financial position of the Surf Club, Junior Activities Group and the Ladies Auxiliary. The significant income contributors to this result were Rent Received and the Sutherland to Surf Fun Run. Fitness First have exercised the option on their lease and extended the term to December 2021, other current tenants have option clauses in their leases. The 42nd Sutherland to Surf was again the premier community event in the Shire and the major fundraising area for our Club. This iconic event is only made possible through the volunteer efforts of the organisers, Mick Brannock, Anne Caterson, Sue Brannock and of course the work carried out by our members and the generous support from sponsors. A further contribution is made to the community with many worthy charities using the Sutherland 2 Surf as a vehicle for their fundraising. It must be said that with little opportunity to increase entry fees and running costs up by 19%, this event must grow to maintain its success. The core activities of lifesaving, training, competition, administration and equipment replacement were supported in accordance with each area’s needs.
The decision to proceed with the Stage 2 development of the clubhouse is a significant milestone in the history of our Club. An initial provision $900,000 was put aside this year and approval was granted at a Special General Meeting to borrow $1,500,000 to-wards the works. Money set aside by Sutherland Shire Council to upgrade the temporary roof replacement and reconstruction after the storm as well as Grants from the NSW Government of $73,000 and the Commonwealth Government of $100,000, championed by our Local Parliamentary Members, Mark Speakman and Scott Morrison respectively, will materially assist with the funding of the project. Thanks to our Auditor, Frank Larosa CA, for being able to meet the deadline for the printing of the Annual Report, as well as his advice during the year. With responsibilities of complying with Accounting Standards in Australia, the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991, and the Associations Incorporation Act NSW, the Club needs to maintain and implement strong internal control to satisfy these requirements. In taking on the building project and in Club operations the Club will need to maintain financial discipline and operate within budgets to be able to repay anticipated loan.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF WANDA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INCORPORATED A.B.N.60 850 705 106 To the members of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated ABN 60 850 705 106
Independent Audit Report Report on the Financial Report
I have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated. (the Association) which comprises the balance sheet as at 30 April 2014, and the income statement and cash flow statement for the year ended on that date, a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes and the statement by members of the Board. Board's Responsibility for the Financial Report The Board of the Association is responsible for the preparation of the financial report and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009 and the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 and is appropriate to meet the needs of members. This Board始s responsibility also includes such internal control as the Board determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement whether due to fraud or error Auditor's Responsibility My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. I conducted my audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the Board, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion. Independence In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical pronouncements. Basis for Qualified Auditor始s Opinion My audit report has been issued with the following qualification: As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for the Association to maintain an effective system of internal control over donations, subscriptions, sales and fundraising activities until their initial entry into the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to such revenue was limited to amounts recorded Auditor's Opinion In my opinion except for the matter referred to in the preceding paragraph, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects the financial position of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated as at 30 April 2013 and of its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009. Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution Without modifying my opinion, I draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009 and the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Audit Report of Frank Larosa continued over page Page 10
