Make new traditions in Galena Country!

We’re thrilled to share Galena Country with you through our 2025 Visitors Guide! As you get to know Galena — and the surrounding towns of Jo Daviess County in Illinois’ upper northwest corner — through these images and stories, you’ll discover a place that’s as forward-looking as it is steeped in history.

Take Galena’s historic Main Street, for example. Its painstakingly restored buildings hold more than 125 ever-evolving shopping and dining spots — places that mix charm with chic, and old-school with on-trend. In these pages, you’ll discover the best of downtown, from delightful eateries (p. 40), inviting wineries and watering holes (p. 44) and eclectic art galleries (p. 49). The surrounding communities also offer opportunities for endless adventure and exploration. Explore their many charms starting on page 4.

What else will you discover? We’ve showcased amazing ways to enjoy Galena’s pastoral scenery, whether you want to enjoy a scenic drive (p. 14), plan a getaway with family or friends (p. 26), or revel in winter charms (p. 36).

Sure, this town is proud of its past (see p. 20) — but it’s not stuck in it. A constant influx of influences from visitors keeps Galena Country fresh and open to new ideas. And those new faces replenish Galena’s reservoir of memorable moments. We hope that you’ll visit soon to discover all that Galena Country has to offer. —Galena Country Tourism Team

Past Meets Present

EXPLORE GALENA’S RICH HISTORY WITH A TOUR OF THE TOWN’S LOVINGLY RESTORED PAST.

Galena was a boom town in the mid-1800s. But when lead mining slowed, the Galena River silted in and steamboats gave way to railroads, Galena went into a century-long sleepy decline. Now fully restored, the town looks much like it did in 1860, when Ulysses S. Grant moved here to help his father run Grant & Perkins Leather Store on Main Street. Some 85% of downtown buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Read on for fascinating historical sites and perspectives.

STEP BACK IN TIME AND EXPLORE GALENA'S HISTORIC GEMS ON FOOT.

The 1998 baseball movie Field of Dreams was filmed partially in downtown Galena. Take a self-guided walking tour along Main Street and see iconic filming locations, including DeSoto House Hotel, Champagne on Main and Outside the Lines Art Gallery

For something spooky, Haunted Galena Tour Co.’s candlelight walking tours visit spirited spots such as The Dowling House

grandest in Galena, with six white marble fireplaces on the first floor. Look for the spot where Grant received the telegraph announcing he’d been elected the 18th president of the United States in 1868.

DeSoto House Hotel

Opened in 1855, the DeSoto House is the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. President Lincoln spoke from the balcony in 1856, and Grant used rooms 209 and 211 of the hotel for his presidential campaign headquarters in 1868.

Grant Park

Cross the pedestrian bridge from downtown to this picture-perfect park and study the cannons and monuments that overlook the Galena River. Among the highlights: the “Blakely of Grant Park,” which fired some of the first shots in the Battle of Fort Sumter and the “Napoleon,” commonly used in the Civil War.

Belvedere Mansion

Built in 1857, this 22-room mansion has been

restored to its mid-19th-century glory. The green velvet drapes are from the set of “Gone With the Wind.” The owners bought them at auction, and they’re a favorite for visitors.

Snap a selfie with Ulysses S. Grant

Visit the pocket park between Washington and Main Street and take a seat on the bench next to Ulysses S. Grant. The seated sculpture of Grant, pocket watch in hand, is an only-in-Galena photo op.

Dowling House

Nestled among the shops and restaurants of downtown Galena, the town’s oldest home was built out of limestone around 1826. Dowling was a trader who quickly became the largest iron dealer on the Upper Mississippi. Here, you could buy stoves, hinges, nails, picks and shovels. Today, you can take a tour and hear stories about some of the town’s earliest residents.

The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum

Housed in an Italianate mansion, the museum houses exhibits on Grant, the Civil War and more. Captain a remote-controlled steamboat, see a preserved mining shaft and marvel at Civil War-era artifacts like the Vicksburg Flag. Hanging in the gallery is the original “Peace in Union” painting by Thomas Nast, depicting Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox in 1865.

Beer

Galena’s brewing history dates to the 1800s, when the town boasted nine breweries. After Prohibition, the last brewery in Galena closed in 1938 and the town was left beer less — until Galena Brewing Company opened in 2010. Today, you’ll find 12 beers on tap (including flagship and seasonal varieties) and a pub menu with burgers, sandwiches, tacos and more. Located in a 149-year-old Presbyterian church in Elizabeth, Highway 20 Brewing Company offers eight beers on tap, all brewed on site. Bring snacks and relax on the outdoor patio with live music on Saturdays and Sundays. Named for the scenic river that winds through the area, Pecatonica Beer Company Tap House serves up full-bodied small-batch beers in a historic building on Warren’s Main Street. And Mud Run Beer Co. crafts ales, lagers and IPAs in Stockton.

Wine

Depending on the vibe you’re after, you can uncork northwest Illinois wines in tasting rooms along Galena’s vibrant Main Street or enjoy a scenic drive out of town to the vineyards. One of Galena Country’s prettiest vineyard views is from the wraparound porch at Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery

Take a tour, then relax in the countryside and sample the 40 wine varieties. Not up for a drive? Head to Galena Cellars Wine Tasting Room & Gift Shop on Main Street, set in an Italianate-style building that dates to the 1860s. Located on an 18-acre farm in Elizabeth, Massbach Ridge Vineyard & Winery offers informal tours, tastings and shopping. At its Galena tasting room, guests are welcome to bring in foods they buy in town to pair with the wines. In Hanover, sample Rocky Waters Vineyard & Winery or Rosario Bruno’s Fergedaboudit Vineyard & Winery. Bruno, who is of Sicilian heritage, learned his tried-and-true winemaking techniques from his Italian friends in Chicago.

Spirits

Brothers Matt and Mike started Blaum Bros. Distilling Co. in 2013 to share their love of whiskey. Today, they handcraft fine spirits, including bourbon, rye, vodka, gin and rum, in the heart of Galena. The brothers meticulously oversee the entire process, from the milling of the raw grains to the mashing, fermentation and distillation using a custom-made copper still. Take a behind-the-scenes distillery tour for a full sensory experience that lets you touch, taste and feel the ingredients that make these spirits unique. Cheers!
