Savor the unparalleled beauty and bounty of Napa Valley and immerse yourself in a vibrant, welcoming culture deeply rooted in hospitality.
Napa Valley is renowned across the globe as a premier wine country destination and beacon of culinary creativity. While it remains revered as the wine capital of North America with an impressive viticultural heritage dating to the mid-1800s, the region has never felt fresher or more exciting. The very same creative, pioneering spirit that drove winemakers to settle here (and a century later, put California wine on the map at the Judgment of Paris in 1976) has continued to fuel a push for excellence, evolution, and reinvention—one that goes far beyond wine and food.
Inspired by the past with an eye to the future, a new generation of tastemakers, artists, and purveyors of living well have helped to enhance and evolve Napa Valley’s singular sense of place. Today, the contemporary complements the classic and all are invited to take a seat at the table.
Whether you come to break bread, sip under the sun, or rock out at a music festival, you’ll discover that Napa Valley is a veritable playground for bon vivants, cultural explorers, and wellness-seekers alike. Here’s to reveling in your best version of the Napa Valley good life. Cheers!

Discover the history, heritage, and spirit of stewardship that have shaped Napa Valley.
Napa Valley’s rich, fertile lands have nourished communities for thousands of years. Three Native American tribes—the Patwin, Coast Miwok, and Wappo—were the first to call Napa Valley home. Typically dwelling near rivers, they hunted big game, fowl, and fish and gathered acorns, grasses, and berries. Native American roots carry into modern day Napa Valley, including the names of places such as “Soscol,” “Mayacamas,” and “Napa” itself.
Spanish and Mexican explorers arrived in the early 1800s, introducing new ways of living off the land, including cultivating wine grapes and cattle ranching. Pioneer George C. Yount was the first “Americano” to receive a land grant from Mexico when he took ownership of Rancho Caymus near Yountville and would become the first to plant grapevines in 1839.
The town of Napa was first planned in 1847 by Nathan Coombs, who saw its potential as a trade hub thanks to the location where the Napa River and Napa Creek converge. During this era, the Gold Rush brought those seeking fortune to Northern California, and local mines yielded silver and other valuable minerals. In 1869, Sawyer Tannery opened along the Napa River and “Napa Leather” gained acclaim for its quality—marking the start of the region’s reputation as a source of luxury goods.
Prior to emerging as a world-class wine locale, Napa Valley was widely known as a wellness destination dating back to 1859. California’s first millionaire, Sam Brannan, helped lay the foundation for visitors to flock to Napa Valley and “take to the waters” in Calistoga, where natural mineral springs and mud baths delivered healing and rejuvenation.
In 1861, Charles Krug opened the first commercial winery, and 25 years later Josephine Tychson made history as one of California’s first female vintners with her St. Helena winery at what is now Freemark Abbey. Chinese laborers are also
credited with helping to bring the wine industry to life in the latter 19th century, between working in the vineyards and building key infrastructure.
Prohibition ground the burgeoning wine industry to a halt in 1920, and cattle ranching led the agricultural economy in the four decades following Prohibition as the wine industry slowly revitalized. Starting in World War II, “braceros” from Mexico became instrumental to the agriculture and winemaking industries; their impact is deeply intertwined in Napa Valley culture today.
The founding of Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966 marked the beginning of the most pivotal chapter in Napa Valley wine history. It was the first new winery to open since Prohibition, with Robert Mondavi raising the bar by championing high-quality winemaking practices. Ten years later, Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon took a surprising star turn at the Judgment of Paris in 1976, with Chateau Montelena Winery and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars beating French wines in the blind tasting competition. Over the ensuing decades, Napa Valley emerged as a leading tourism destination for fine wine and food.
The 1970s were equally important for the restaurant scene. Domaine Chandon
was the first winery to introduce haute cuisine and its success inspired other wineries to offer a dining component. In 1978, The French Laundry was opened by Don and Sally Schmitt in Yountville. When they sold it to Chef Thomas Keller in 1994, he elevated the region’s culinary credibility with his signature fine dining experience; The French Laundry was awarded the title of “World’s Best Restaurant” in back-to-back years (2003-2004) and in 2007,
The French Laundry joined the elite class of three-Michelin-star restaurants around the world.
The 21st century has been a period of exciting refinement and reinvention: more Michelin stars, downtown Napa’s evolution, the introduction of new luxury resorts and boutique hotels, a widespread commitment to sustainable winemaking, and the diversification of the wine and dining scene. In 2013, the outdoor music festival BottleRock Napa Valley resonated with music fans and its growing success introduced the region to a new generation of travelers. Today, the contemporary and classic coexist in a compelling blend that is quintessentially Californian and 100 percent Napa Valley.

TRAVEL THOUGHTFULLY
Follow these five simple tips to be a responsible traveler and leave Napa Valley better than you found it.
1 Buy Local: Support small businesses and the entrepreneurial community to make a positive contribution to the local economy.
2 Eat Green: Patronize restaurants that source ingredients from local farms.
3 Sip Sustainably: Protect delicate vineyard ecosystems, avoid walking through the vines unless you’ve been invited to do so, and support Napa Green Certified estate wineries.
4 Go Car-Free: Leave your car parked and explore on foot and bike.
5 Tread Lightly: Stay on marked trails and throw your trash in appropriate bins.
Preserving Napa Valley’s natural beauty and resources has been a priority for generations. In 1968, Napa Valley became the first Agricultural Preserve in the United States with a zoning ordinance that currently protects 38,000 acres of land. Other impactful sustainability initiatives include the Napa Green certification program for vineyards and wineries. In 2021, the Napa Green program became the first of its kind in the world to redevelop vineyard certification standards to include climate action, regenerative carbon farming, and social equity. With nearly 100 wineries certified (and counting!), Napa Valley vintners comprise 40 percent of California’s certified sustainable wineries. Collectively, program participants bearing the Napa Green signs have saved 28 million gallons of water and
millions of kilowatt hours of energy. The lodging sector is also demonstrating a commitment to destination stewardship with the recent launch of the Napa Valley Green Lodging certification program. Be it hotels, wineries, restaurants, or retailers, treading lightly and contributing to preservation and regeneration is an integral part of the Napa Valley ethos.
A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT: Stretching 50 miles from Mount St. Helena to San Pablo Bay, the Napa River has served as a habitat for wildlife and provided sustenance for thousands of years. It facilitated commerce in the 1800s, and today, the river is an iconic backdrop in downtown Napa. Visitors can learn more about local history and experience the river on guided kayak tours with Enjoy Napa Valley or scenic gondola rides with Napa Valley Gondola

Carrying on my greatgrandfather (Cesare Mondavi), grandfather (Peter Mondavi Sr.), and father’s (Marc Mondavi) legacies means the world to me! As winemakers, focusing on innovation while continuing to create classic nostalgic Napa Valley wines is imperative to our family.
Drink in the history of Napa Valley viticulture at these legendary wineries where it all began.
l Charles Krug Winery was established in 1861 and became Napa Valley’s first tasting room when the doors opened to the public in 1882.
l Schramsberg Vineyards was established by German immigrant Jacob Schram, who purchased the Diamond Mountain property in 1862, planted 100 acres of vineyards, and created the valley’s first hillside wine caves. Jack and Jamie Davies purchased the property in 1965 with a dream of producing sparkling wines; their son Hugh is at the helm of the family business today.
l Louis M. Martini, an Italian immigrant, started making sacramental wine in Napa Valley during Prohibition and opened his eponymous St. Helena winery in 1933 as soon as Prohibition ended. He also helped found the Napa Valley Vintners Association in 1944.
l Pioneering winemaker Robert Mondavi founded his iconic namesake winery in 1966 in Oakville. While the original property is closed for a multi-year remodel, you can sample Robert
Mondavi Winery vintages at the new Arch & Tower tasting room in downtown Napa.
l Winemaker Warren Winiarski made the game-changing Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Stag’s Leap Vineyard continues to be one of the most beloved wines in the winery’s portfolio.
l In 1972, Jim Barrett purchased Chateau Montelena, a Calistoga winery established in 1882. Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay famously won the 1976 Judgment of Paris. The winery remains in the Barrett family and is open for tastings by appointment.
l Milenko “Mike” Grgich made that award-winning 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay vintage and after that success, he went on to open Grgich Hills Estate in 1977. To this day, the estate welcomes visitors and is a popular stop on the Napa Valley Wine Train

Practical trip tips and need-to-knows to help you navigate Napa Valley like an insider
Time your visit to savor the sights, sounds, and other seasonal nuances that make Napa Valley a compelling destination year round.
’Tis the season for stunning views and perfect weather. Thanks to spring showers, Napa Valley shines at its most bucolic in spring. Between the lush green hillsides, colorful wildflowers, and bud break on the vines, the valley bursts with life and emanates a palpable spirit of renewal.
There’s nothing quite like Napa Valley summer days and nights. The shining California sun makes it the best time to enjoy outdoor activities and relax poolside after a day of tasting, while evening temperatures are optimal for alfresco dining and entertainment. Concerts and music festivals keep the good vibes flowing under starry skies.
FALL: SEPTEMBER–NOVEMBER
Raise a glass to harvest season in Napa Valley! Fall is a productive time of year for winemaking and visitors are invited to join in a robust lineup of harvest festivities. Vineyard leaves turn bright orange, yellow, and red, making for stunning photos, as the coziness of autumn settles in during late October.
WINTER: DECEMBER–FEBRUARY
This quieter off-peak season allows visitors to experience Napa Valley like a local. Winery experiences are more intimate and overnight guests enjoy more affordable lodging rates. December glitters with winter holiday celebrations and grand decorative displays; crisp winter temperatures and occasional rains replenish the vines; and Cabernet Season opens doors to private tastings—this is a great time for a barrel tour and valleywide dining experiences.

Go inside Napa Valley wine with sommelier Amanda McCrossin.
Napa Valley expert Amanda McCrossin is a certified sommelier, podcast host, and social media star. She has a knack for demystifying wine and helping wine appreciators cultivate their palates. While working as wine director at PRESS Restaurant (home to the oldest, deepest collection of Napa Valley wines in the world), she started sharing her Napa Valley wine explorations on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Before long, she developed a big enough following to go out on her own and make storytelling and wine education her full-time profession. Here, she shares some of her expertise, insights, and advice for the wine-curious.
Q WHAT MAKES NAPA VALLEY SUCH AN EXCITING PLACE TO EXPLORE CALIFORNIA WINES?
A There really is no other region like it. It’s a relatively small area by contrast to other wine regions. What’s incredible is there are so many different microclimates, and 50% of the world’s soil types are within this 35-mile northto-south span. You’ve got a very rare, dry Mediterranean climate that only 1% of the entire world experiences, which means we have the ideal regionalconditions for growing wine grapes. On top of that, we’re a valley that sits between two mountain ranges, so you
have diversity within the valley floor and fruitful mountains. And then we have that added benefit of being close to major cities like San Francisco.
The region produces Cabernet Sauvignon better than almost any other place in the world, which is not easy to do. But Cabernet isn’t the only champion grape here…the fact that you can grow grapes like Riesling and Chardonnay in the same place where you grow Cabernet is really unique.
The people are also what makes Napa Valley so special because we’re not all born-and-raised grape-growers. People come from all over the world and either find the wine bug early and want to root their lives in Napa Valley, or visit and really fall in love with the place. And so it becomes an interesting breeding ground of human beings who all come together for wine, but come from very different backgrounds.
Q HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO WINE?
A I didn’t come from a wine drinking household, so for me, wine always felt very foreign. My approach today is really uncovering how and why we enjoy it. I’m always cognizant of the fact that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to

“Even though the cachet of Napa Valley is big, this is a small town. It’s a community filled with friendly people who want to help and want you to have a great time.
have a great bottle of wine or to enjoy wine. It depends on the night, right? You’re not going to drink your fanciest bottle on a Tuesday night with pizza. So you have something that feels a little more low-key, like Zinfandel. And then on Saturday night, when you feel a little fancier, maybe then you break open something really special. Pay attention to what you’re drinking, what your mood is, what you’re going to be doing that night. That all plays such a big role in wine. Every bottle is not created equal.
A Napa Valley isn’t just Cabernet Sauvignon—it is certainly the most expensive grape and the most established wine we make, but a lot of the wineries make other varietals, like Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, that are more affordable and approachable. They often also make second and third labels. So maybe if you can’t afford their premium label, you can try something that comes from a vineyard that has slightly younger vines or is made in a way that doesn’t necessarily need to be aged. There’s a ton of boutique producers— 95% of Napa Valley wineries are family-owned—and there’s also a lot of large producers. Within both of those categories, you can find really great value if you look at the wide breadth of what they’re making, because a lot of these people make wines that they want to drink now. If you find a winery that

you really love, research who’s involved in that project. Because a lot of times those winemakers or even assistant winemakers have their own labels, and they often get access to fruit that’s not that dissimilar from what they’re working with in their day jobs.
Q
A The best-quality wines are going to be the ones that are super specific. I tend to spend my money on wines that are single vineyard, single site. Obviously we want to see “Napa Valley” on the label, but the more specific that you see a wine, the more high quality it’s likely to be because the wineries and the winemakers want to showcase the best of what they have and they don’t want to blend it with other
things. If you’re thinking about splurging on a bottle, my advice is to look for as specific a place as you possibly can, and often that’s going to be a single vineyard or even a single block within a vineyard.
Q WHAT NON-WINE-RELATED ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR VISITORS TO ENHANCE THEIR EXPERIENCE IN NAPA VALLEY?
A If you’re out somewhere, if you’re sitting at a bar, even if you’re waiting for coffee, just strike up a conversation. You never know who you’re going to meet, and you never know where that’s going to lead. People are super friendly, generous, and hospitable in Napa Valley. I’ve had some of the most incredible experiences just because I was sitting at a bar, having a conversation with someone that I thought was a stranger, who ended up becoming a friend. Even though the cachet of Napa Valley is big, this is a small town. It’s a community filled with friendly people who want to help and want you to have a great time.
Amanda McCrossin explains a few of the most common wine terms.
“Tannin is more of a texture and a feeling than a taste. It’s that dry, astringent feeling in your mouth. Tannin comes from the skins and the seeds of grapes, and certain grapes have more tannin and certain grapes have less tannin. For example, Cabernet Sauvignon is what’s known as a high-tannin grape versus Pinot Noir, which is known as a low-tannin grape.”
“This is the natural conversion of harsh green-apple malic acid converted to lactic acid. It happens in almost every red wine, but it is more prominent in Chardonnay, where malic acid converts to lactic acid and gives us that buttery feel. If you’re not someone who loves a buttery Chardonnay, then you should avoid wines that go through malolactic fermentation. Sauvignon Blanc usually doesn’t go through it, Pinot Grigio usually doesn’t go through it. Winemakers make no ‘ML’ Chardonnay as well.”
Dry
“The word dry means free from residual sugar. Most of the wines you’re drinking in Napa Valley are dry, meaning all of the sugar has been converted to alcohol by way of yeast. Dry and tannic often get confused.”
Amanda McCrossin’s recipe for a wine-infused day well spent in Napa Valley
Start with a hot air balloon ride! Those take off in Yountville very early in the morning, but it’s totally worth it. You get the best perspective of the valley: a bird’s-eye view of the patchwork quilt of all the different microclimates and AVAs. It gives a really good overview and understanding of how things are laid out. After that, head to St. Helena to grab a coffee and a doughnut at Station. It’s where you’re going to rub elbows with winemakers and the people who live in St. Helena, and it’s one of my favorite places to get coffee.
Go wine tasting somewhere small and boutique. One of my favorites is Frog’s Leap Winery in Rutherford. They do an amazing job of keeping it low-key and very accessible. The wines have been organically farmed since the early ‘90s. They also have a garden on-site, they serve cheese, and it’s a wonderful experience. Then go to lunch at The Charter Oak; order one of the salads and
the vegetables from their farm with the veggie dip. After that, head to another winery, something on the higher-end side, like Rudd in Oakville, which is a family-owned property and one of the most prestigious sites in Napa Valley. If there’s time, check out the western side of Oakville and go to Opus One Winery, which offers an incredible experience as well and is world-famous.
Do dinner at Charlie’s in St. Helena. It has a great local vibe, but you’ll feel super welcome as a tourist. And the food absolutely does not disappoint. Chef Elliot Bell makes some of the best fried chicken in the valley. Then you have to go see a movie at the Cameo Cinema in St. Helena. It’s the oldest continuously run single-screen theater in the country. Francis Ford Coppola screens his films there, and they show everything from arthouse cinema to big feature films. They do popcorn with real butter, and yes, of course you can get a great glass of wine as well!
Protecting and preserving the environment is second nature to Napa Valley’s wine industry.
Collectively, Napa Valley winemakers and grape growers lead the way in sustainable winemaking practices. The shared commitment to minimizing resource impacts, regenerating the environment, and producing clean, quality wines is reflected in the impressive volume of Napa Green Certified wineries and vineyards. Nearly 100 wineries have earned the Napa Green winery third-party certification, meeting more than 120 sustainability standards. The Napa Green Vineyard program is the first sustainable winegrowing certification focused specifically on climate action; regenerative farming; and social equity, justice, and inclusion.
There are many ways a winery can show a commitment to being green.
Napa Valley wineries and grape growers lead the pack in sustainable winemaking— with a little help from the animal kingdom.
Naturally, Mother Nature plays an instrumental role in green winemaking. Many vineyards use Authentic Abatement falconry services to eliminate invasive bird species and rodents. Barn owls also protect vines from rodents and other critters— some 300 owl nest boxes are perched around the valley to help facilitate rodenticide. Bees help foster a healthier ecosystem, too, which is why Honig Vineyard & Winery, Stanly Ranch, and Fantesca Estate & Winery have implemented robust bee cultivation programs. Sheep and goats naturally manage cover crops at wineries such as Cliff Lede Vineyards, Tres Sabores, and Stags’ Leap Winery
Organic: It’s either made from organically grown grapes without the use of added sulfites, or made from certified organic grapes.
Biodynamic: Similar to organic wines, biodynamic wines avoid synthetic chemicals during winemaking. They view the
vineyard as an entire ecosystem, producing lowintervention wines made with minimal manipulation and additives.
Demeter Certification: Part of a global organization dating back to 1928, Demeter is the official certification grantor for biodynamic farms.
• Spottswoode Estate was the first winery to start farming their estate vineyard organically in 1985. They made history again as the first Napa Valley winery to become B Corporation Certified. The family-owned winery keeps paving the way, achieving the Regenerative Organic Certification focused on soil health and animal, worker, and farmer welfare.
• Clif Family Winery’s ecological footprint is reduced by farming 90 acres of organic vineyards and five acres of vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and olive groves. Green business practices including renewable energy and reusable, recyclable, and compostable packaging helped it achieve B Corporation Certification in 2023.
• Tres Sabores has been equally dedicated to organic farming for

the past quarter of a century. The estate’s thriving biodiversity is on full display between the vineyards, orchards, and hillsides dotted with grazing sheep.
• A 2024 Great Wine Capitals Best Of Wine Tourism winner for sustainable wine tourism practices, Grgich Hills Estate first made the transition to organic and biodynamic farming and then attained Regenerative Organic Certification. Grgich was awarded this honor and became one of only a handful of wineries in the world to hold this certification. They employ groundbreaking sustainable practices to be stewards of the land and community in a way that not only respects the earth, but also works to revitalize and heal it.
• Covert Estate goes the extra mile as a member of 1% for the Planet, giving 1% of annual sales from sustainably produced wines to vetted environmental partners.
From the iconic valley floor to the heights of Howell Mountain, every Napa Valley AVA has a story to tell.
As California’s first designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), Napa Valley is a special place when it comes to grape growing and winemaking. This is due, in large part, to the 16 designated appellations—each with its own terroir, climate, and character that are etched into the very essence of the wine itself.
These designations are like a map of the wine’s soul, unveiling the secrets of a region’s winemaking artistry. The Los Carneros AVA, for instance, is renowned for its cool climate, creating Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that dance on the palate with elegance and brightness. Howell Mountain AVA is nestled at elevations above 1,400 feet and produces bold wines. Here, grapes endure warmer temperatures and longer sun exposure, resulting in rich, luscious reds. The vines of Mount Veeder AVA challenge gravity, clinging to rocky soils and absorbing sunlight that adds complexity to Chardonnays and Bordeaux blends.
On the valley floor, you’ll find another collection of stories. In these AVAs, like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, and Oakville, the gentle slopes and fertile soils create wines that embody the essence of Napa Valley, with a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and refinement.
With each Napa Valley AVA, a new chapter unfolds—a tale of passion, heritage, and the dance between earth and vine. Embrace the nuances and heart in every bottle, and let Napa Valley AVAs be your guide to a wine journey unlike any other.
Only the best grapes end up in your glass. Here’s how it happens:
1. Winter pruning
After harvest, vineyard workers train vines to grow a certain way, allowing for precision and timing at harvest.
2. Bud break and flowering
Over a two-month period, the first buds emerge. After a month, tight bunches of flowers dot the vines; each can form a grape berry.
3. Fruit set
The now-pollinated flowers drop their petals, and a tiny green grape emerges at the end of each stem. Bunches take shape and the fruit ripens, thanks to the remarkable climate.
4. Canopy management and crop thinning
Leaf removal and shoot thinning helps to ensure shade, sunlight, and air flow for grape clusters before crop thinning—the
“green harvesting” of unripe or imperfect fruit.
5. Veraison
All grapes begin green, but now they reveal variety characteristics. This color-changing period is called “veraison.”
6. Harvest
After grapes have been tasted and tested for sugar levels (“brix”), it’s time to harvest. Usually, grapes are hand-picked at night or early morning when cooler temps help stabilize sugar levels and ensure fresh fruit aroma.
7. Crush Harvested grapes are sorted, destemmed, and pressed before being sent to an appropriate vessel.
8. Fermentation
Yeast is typically added to initiate the fermentation process. When fermentation is
complete, the wine is transferred to a barrel, cement egg, amphora, or stainless steel tank to age and develop.
9. Aging
A variety of receptacles are used to impart character that will develop over time.
Everything from stainless steel tanks to American, French, or Hungarian oak barrels are used to properly develop the wine profile.
10. Bottling
When wine has aged completely to the winemaker’s preferences, it’s time to bottle. Once in the bottle, wine may be allowed to age for a few months or several years.
Follow these five tips to maximize the pleasure of your wine-tasting experience.
1 Make a Reservation Tasting rooms can require reservations, so it’s best to research in advance and secure bookings at the wineries that top your wish list.
2 Map it Out Even though Napa Valley is a relatively small area, it can take a while to travel between destinations. Group your tastings geographically and investigate your route in advance to allow enough time to get around.
3 Dress for Success No matter the season, wine tasting rooms are temperature controlled; if you’re going
behind the scenes, wine caves and production facilities might be too cool for comfort. Bring a layer and wear sensible shoes for uneven paths and unpaved areas.
4 Fuel Up and Hydrate Breakfast is the most important meal of the day—you don’t want to taste on an empty stomach. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, pack snacks, and have a hearty lunch.
5 Give Gratuities Tip your tasting ambassadors and wine attendants like you would at a bar or restaurant.
AVAS ACCORDING TO AMANDA
Amanda McCrossin explains the significance of vineyard designations, otherwise known as “AVAs.”
“Microclimates tell a story. If you were to drive from Carneros all the way up to Calistoga in the late morning, you could have 10- to 20-degree temperature shifts just within that hour-long drive. That has everything to do with how the San Pablo Bay is moderating the valley and how the winds are coming through. For that reason, you have very different variations of wine. A Cabernet from Calistoga versus a Cabernet from Coombsville should taste very different; they should taste like the place that they come from. When you’re tasting different wines from different sites in Napa Valley, make sure you’re asking: What should
I be tasting here? What’s special about Calistoga? What’s special about Coombsville? For example, Calistoga tends to be the warmest of our AVAs; it tends to have Cabernets that have the softest structure, very plushy, but also very ripe flavors. Coombsville is a little cooler. It’s closer to the San Pablo Bay, which means the wines are going to have great intensity because they get a long growing season, but they also have slightly more lift. They have more freshness because the acids are a little higher. There are two very different interpretations, and it’s fun if you can taste those side by side. A lot of people think of Napa Valley Cabernet as one sort of blanket thing, when in reality, there are many different variations of it.”
New to wine tasting? Follow these do’s and don’ts according to our pro, Amanda McCrossin.
DON’T WEAR PERFUME. “It really affects how you’re going to smell things, but also how others around you are going to smell things—80% of what we’re tasting is actually what we’re smelling.”
HYDRATE, BUT TAKE A FEW SWALLOWS BEFORE YOU SIP. “One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is taking a sip of water right before they take a sip of wine. Our mouths are always trying to achieve this level of neutrality, and the way that we do that is through salivation. So when you take a sip of water, your palate, which has its own natural pH, is going to try to reset immediately through salivation. And if you try to take a sip of wine right on top of that, your palate’s going to be in this weird flux state where the wine that you’re tasting directly after is going to taste either too acidic or too base.”
GET YOUR NOSE INTO IT
“Don’t be afraid to really get your nose in the glass. The middle of the bridge of your nose should kind of rest against the far brim of the glass. Move your head around a lot, side to side, up and down. We smell in a cross direction because you’re going to find lots of different aromatics across the surface of the liquid. And we all have a dominant nostril, so you’ll notice
when you’re smelling side to side that one nostril picks up aromas a little bit better than the other.”
TASTE IN THREE SIPS. “That first sip is a primer sip, your palate resetting. The second sip is when you start to taste exactly what’s going on in the glass. And the third is a confirmation: ‘Do I like this, do I not like this?’”
DON’T BE AFRAID TO SPIT. “It’s totally fine to not like the wine or to want to pace yourself. We don’t have to like everything that we taste. Never be afraid to spit. That’s the biggest mistake that I see in tasting rooms, people thinking that they have to consume everything that’s put in front of them.”
NOTICE HOW THE WINE MAKES YOU FEEL BEYOND FLAVORS. “I try to think about how does this wine make me feel? Does it make me see a color? Does it make me think of a song? Does it give a certain mood? Oftentimes feelings can be more sticky memories that we create, more so than trying to figure out if it’s notes of blackberry or cherry or eucalyptus. All of those things are definitely going to be on the tasting notes and someone can guide you. But there’s nothing stickier than a memory that you can come up with yourself and that you can call back on.”

With picture-perfect weather nearly year round, a plethora of gourmet foods, and world-class wine to pair with it, Napa Valley wineries provide an idyllic setting for an elevated picnic.
Several wineries provide attractive picnic spots, and some even sell the necessary provisions. Others invite you to bring your own picnic spread— as long as you purchase a bottle or two of their wine to taste. It’s always recommended to check with wineries in advance before bringing your own picnic supplies—wineries must follow strict regulations and laws, and many do not have permits allowing outside food on the premises.
• For Laird Family Estate’s Bottle & Blanket tasting, you bring your own food and stop by the tasting room for a picnic blanket and a bottle of wine. If you prefer a picnic table, you’re welcome to bring outside food to enjoy alongside your wine-tasting experience or if purchasing a bottle or two.

picnic lunch, and enjoy bottle service under centuries-old elm trees at one of the oldest wineries in Calistoga.
• Make a picnic table reservation well in advance at Rombauer Vineyards to guarantee your prime outdoor spot. Wines are served by the glass, by the bottle, or a full tasting flight.
• When you reserve the Estate Picnic Experience at Black Stallion Estate Winery, wines are selected upon arrival and you’re provided with a picnic table, cold bottled water, take-away glasses, and a wine opener.
• The Oak Grove picnic area at Rutherford Hill Winery is a longtime favorite for the sweeping views of Napa Valley. Reserve a picnic table beforehand for $30 per person, then purchase wine bottles in the winery.

All roads lead to Mustards Grill, a standout staple of the Napa Valley restaurant world for 40 years
Chef Cindy Pawlcyn opened Mustards Grill, her landmark “deluxe truck stop” along the St. Helena Highway between Yountville and Oakville, in 1983. Prior to going out on her own, Pawlcyn helped open Meadowood Napa Valley’s restaurant and worked under acclaimed Chef Bruce LeFavour at the valley’s French darling of the time, Rose et LeFavour.
Her concept struck a chord, and Mustards Grill has been a gathering place for winemakers, local chefs, and visitors ever since. “It was an instant hit,” she explained. “The valley wanted a place like Mustards more than we knew. We
just wanted a place where folks would be comfortable celebrating or having a burger and a beer.”
It was then that Pawlcyn, ever the pioneer, had the foresight to create an onsite chef’s garden that is now common for fine dining restaurants across the country. She planted an organic garden to provide seasonal inspiration and to treat patrons to the “pure flavors of produce picked fresh just hours before arriving on the plate.” Today, the two-acre gardens supply 20% of the restaurant’s produce, and diners are invited to walk through and explore the thriving gardens to see what’s in season. “Inspiration comes from the garden,
seasonal changes, cookbooks, and of course dining out,” she shared. “In Napa Valley and in the greater Bay Area, we are so lucky with the food scene. I do love to travel and that’s often where I get ideas from, too.”
Well traveled and curious about global cuisines, Pawlcyn is an avid cookbook collector who’s authored four cookbooks herself: The James Beard Award-winning Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook; Fog City Diner Cookbook; Big Small Plates; Appetizers; and her most recent, Cindy’s Supper Club: Meals from Around the World to Share with Family and Friends. An inductee of Who’s Who of Cooking in America, she has also been twice nominated for the James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef in California and has received a Robert Mondavi Award for Culinary Excellence. When asked if anything has changed or evolved since opening 40 years ago, Pawlcyn reflected, “The concept has always been good food and wines for a good value. Lucky for us, it was what people wanted!” She recently had the opening menu framed as a reminder of Mustards’ humble beginnings. “The
menu was small compared to now and the prices were so inexpensive by today’s standards; practically free! It’s amazing that there are 10 dishes still on the menu that are direct descendants of the original menu.”
For a quintessential Mustards Grill experience, Pawlcyn recommends ordering classic dishes like the Mongolian pork chop, lemon garlic chicken, and lemon lime tart. Locals rave about the daily seafood tostada special, ahi tuna crackers, and adult grilled cheese— among the many staples of the alwayschanging menu of daily specials and seasonal dishes.
“I love being here,” Pawlcyn enthused. “I have always described it as chef heaven—with a year-round growing season, diners that love food and wine, wonderful folks to work with...what more could you ask for?” She is still an active, constant presence in the Mustards kitchen and is enthusiastic about the future of the dining world in Napa Valley. “There is a whole new group of chefs opening places and coming to the area, so there are so many places to go, see, and enjoy.”

A chef with a fine-dining pedigree puts his spin on Kansas City-style barbecue with his first brick-and-mortar restaurant.
A Kansas City native, Chef Darryl Bell moved to Napa Valley to work for Thomas Keller at Bouchon Bistro, where he rose through the kitchen ranks over a sevenyear stint. On the side, he developed a barbecue sauce line, 816 BBQ Sauce, originally as a way to raise funds for a foundation in Africa. During the pandemic, Bell’s friends and family wanted to buy the sauce, so he started an online business.
Simultaneously, as the world reopened and people returned to restaurants, he noticed an increased demand for casual dining— and his own cravings for Kansas City-style barbecue were at an all-time high. “My wife said, stop crying about it and create your own restaurant,” he said with a laugh. So Bell made the decision to evolve the sauce into a restaurant, switching gears from fine dining back to his roots with Stateline Road Smokehouse.
Along with his business partner, Jeremy Threat, Bell found a space that spoke to him in the Rail Arts District in downtown Napa. A former auto body shop in a Quonset hut, the building resembled an airplane hangar and had the space he needed for serious smoking—including his 20-foot-long, custom-built smokers. “It’s my cathedral to smoking,” he described it. “There are four different types of fire and heat, smokers that are ultimately cooking all the food on the menu.”
“There is nothing in Napa that is equivalent to this,” he
explained. Notably, it is a pioneering Black-owned restaurant in the city of Napa. And while it’s Kansas City-inspired, the menu is a representation of Bell’s multitude of culinary influences. “I lived in both worlds. I can’t be restricted and tied down to just one criteria,” he said of the cuisine. “It’s a mix of both because that’s who I am.”
The one tradition he won’t mess with is burnt ends. “It’s a dish that was created in Kansas City, so I try to show it in its truest form, the way I ate it when I was small,” he explained. The menu also includes hearty grain bowls, healthy green salads, and vegetable sides—and there’s a secret fish menu that those in the know (that’s you!) can request. Those familiar with Stateline from past pop-ups will be pleased to see the popular smoked maitake and greens dish with marinated garbanzo beans and crisp purple rice among the offerings. “We’re working with Rancho Gordo beans, who are based just two blocks up the street,” he said.
For Bell, this project is showcasing everything he loves beyond food—and removing some barriers. “It’s what I’m wanting Napa to look like and feel like,” he said. A large Muhammad Ali mural on the back of the building is a tribute to the cityscape and icons of his youth. He knows Napa Valley diners are ready for a place like Stateline. “They’re ready for barbecue. They’re ready for a young, hip place with a fun patio, and cool cocktails and playlist.”

Delectable brunch highlights at St. Helena’s elegant Violetto include almond and banana tartine and smoked trout Benedict. Ready to make a splash? Set at the northern end of Napa Valley, Calistoga is renowned for therapeutic geothermal springs. Dating back to the early 1900s, the Olympic-size Main Pool at Indian Springs Calistoga is fed by on-site geysers. Before or after your mudbath at Calistoga Spa Hot Springs, take advantage of four adult-only geothermal pools. Or head to Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort and enjoy indoor and outdoor geothermal pools and the full-service spa. After a day focused on self-care, enjoy dinner at Nova Terra Plant Based Kitchen and Creamery Located in the historic Calistoga Depot,
California’s second-oldest train station, Nova Terra is the only fully vegan market, creamery, and restaurant in Napa Valley.
Get your heart pumping with a hike along Oat Hill Mine Trail, a former stagecoach route that rewards getting in those steps with striking vineyard views. For something more serene, head toward Calistoga to bask in the shady solitude of towering coastal redwoods at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Guided forest bathing experiences offered by Alila Napa Valley
maximize the stress-reducing health benefits that a walk in the woods can provide.
Embrace the beauty of moving at a slower pace by raising a glass at a Napa Green Certified winery. Led by a pair of second-generation sisters, the vineyards at Spottswoode Estate are regenerative organic and biodynamically farmed; you can taste the care for the land in every glass. At family-owned Tres Sabores, wine tastings overlook an organic farmscape studded with fruit trees, olive groves, and grapevines.
To bounce back after a day of wine tasting, visit Blue Water Day Spa in downtown Napa (try the Hangover Helper massage!). Or, spend the afternoon at Health Spa Napa Valley where you could book an exercise class, visit the pool, and get a massage at this full-service day spa.
For dinner, head to Bear at Stanly Ranch. You’ll happily eat your veggies thanks to a seasonally driven menu with constantly changing options including asparagus with Meyer lemon aioli, and purple sweet potato with yuzu kosho yogurt.
Rise and wine! Begin your day with brunch-inspired bites and light-style wines from Clif Family Winery. Or, swap the wine for a mocktail—think Pluot Lavender Limonada—crafted with organic produce from Clif Family’s farm.
Now it’s time to get moving. Strap on a helmet and cruise along the Napa Valley Vine Trail with an e-bike from Napa Valley Bike Tours. The 47-mile trail system boasts colorful public art and stellar vineyard views.

Don’t be afraid to get dirty— Calistoga’s mud bath rituals are safe, relaxing, and healing.
A product of the ancient volcanic activity of nearby Mount Saint Helena, Calistoga’s legendary mud combines mineral-rich volcanic ash with waters from natural mineral hot springs. The resulting magical mud has been touted for its many nurturing benefits, such as hydrating the skin, reducing inflammation, and promoting general relaxation. Depending on the spa, you either “paint” the mud on yourself or “bathe” in a mud bath. Mud bath tubs are heated from the bottom and you lie on top of a layer of mud. Spa attendants lather mud on top until you are covered to the neck, creating a feeling of weightlessness. After a short period, mud is washed off. The sulfur in mineral water mixed with the alkaline in volcanic ash kills all bacteria, so mud baths are perfectly sanitary.

Along the riverfront, in the city of Napa, graze your way through Oxbow Public Market, where the morning offerings include savory breakfast sandwiches on handmade sourdough bagels at chef Christoper Kostow’s Loveski deli. Visit CIA at Copia next door to see the culinary gardens and historic cookware collection at the Chuck Williams Culinary Arts Museum. If you need something for your own kitchen, browse the Marketplace at Copia’s meticulously curated selection.
In the afternoon, paddle off calories on the Napa River during a kayak tour with Napa Valley Paddle or Enjoy Napa Valley. Better yet, kick back and leave the work to a gondolier on a romantic cruise with Napa Valley Gondola. Downtown Napa may not have vineyards, but more than 50 tasting rooms make it a perfect destination for an urban tasting walkabout. As evening falls, dine along the riverfront while savoring acclaimed French country cuisine at Angèle Restaurant & Bar before catching a concert at the art deco Uptown Theatre Napa.
No reservations at The French Laundry? Then go for one of chef Thomas Keller’s impeccable croissants at his Bouchon Bakery in Yountville. Follow the
self-guided Yountville Art Walk audio tour to see the little town’s big public art collection. For works by leading regional artists and to learn about valley history, check out the boldly colorful Napa Valley Museum Yountville.
By now you might be eager to get out to the wineries. Choose from three- and six-hour journeys with multi-course gourmet meals and tasting menus aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train as it travels between Napa and St. Helena. Or ride in a cable car-style trolley up valley to the medieval-style Castello di Amorosa on tours with the Napa Valley Wine Trolley.
You could also hang in Yountville and shop for Napa Valley wine country fash-
ions in Washington Street’s boutiques before toasting the small town’s charms over a sparkling tasting flight at JCB Yountville. And for dinner, walk across the street to Bistro Jeanty. The French cuisine has made this charming restaurant a Napa Valley landmark.
Keep it car-free and carefree on the Napa Valley Vine Trail, exploring the recently completed 8.2-mile stretch between Calistoga and St. Helena (bicycle rentals available in both towns). Power your ride from Calistoga with a breakfast burrito at Lovina, or pack a picnic from Sam’s General Store. Stop off at
Bothe-Napa Valley State Park to explore redwood groves and follow the History Trail to see Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park’s giant 1846 water wheel. Browse galleries and shops along St. Helena’s Main Street, which earned designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Before returning to Calistoga, taste the valley’s bounty at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch
After all that exercise, soothe yourself Calistoga-style with a massage, mud bath, and mineral bath soak at Golden Haven Hot Springs. And the locals’ favorite Mangia Mi Calistoga is where to pair downhome pizza and pasta made from scratch with Napa Valley’s incomparable wines.
Looking to maximize your budget? That’s easy! Pepper these free experiences into your itinerary:
1 Visit the iconic “Welcome to Napa Valley” signs located in Calistoga and Oakville.
2 Hike local trails such as Westwood Hills Park or Robert Louis Stevenson State Park
3 Ride bikes or take a walk along a segment of the 47-mile Napa Valley Vine Trail
4 Feast your eyes on local produce and browse the vendors at the Napa Farmers’ Market and Calistoga Farmers’ Market held Saturday mornings year round. And don’t miss out on St. Helena’s Farmers’ Market on Friday mornings.
5 Wander around Oxbow Public Market, a lively food hall filled to the brim with eateries and retailers.
6 Admire the culinary gardens, snap photos of the giant sculpture (aptly named Fork) by local artist Gordon Huether, and peruse the free Chuck Williams Culinary Arts
Museum exhibits at CIA at Copia
7 Check out the colorful murals in the Rail Arts District in downtown Napa.
8 See more than 40 public sculptures on the Yountville Art Walk
9 Enjoy live music at local restaurants, bars, and wineries. Come summertime, the sounds of music emanate outdoors at free community concerts.
10 Watch hot air balloons take flight in the early morning hours above Yountville.
There’s no need to leave the kids at home. Let Napa Valley entertain the whole family!
By Matt Villano
Whether you sip grape juice at a family-friendly winery, picnic in the vineyards, or feed goats at a working farm, Napa Valley is an ideal destination for kids of all ages.
Start the day with breakfast at La Cheve Bakery and Brews in Napa, a Mexican restaurant in an 1845 building that serves homemade pan dulce (sweet pastries). From there, check out the nearby Playground Fantastico for its whimsical slides and climbing structures. Then, head to Connolly Ranch, where kids can pet and feed chickens and goats. The working farm teaches about the basics of ecology and the sources of the food we eat.
For lunch, check out Oxbow Public Market. Kids will love the sweet treats from Kara’s Cupcakes and Anette’s Chocolates; adults will love the highwaters and kumamotos at Hog Island Oyster Co. and browsing the shelves at Napa Bookmine. Mid-afternoon, it’s time for the parents to enjoy a glass of wine. Feast it Forward, a bar and cooking studio adjacent to Oxbow, has an outdoor “yard” where kids can play cornhole while adults taste local wines. Another great spot for all-ages tastings: Oasis by Hoopes, an outdoor lounge in the middle of a regenerative farm and animal sanctuary.
Get the kids moving in the early morning at Crane Park in St. Helena, a 12-acre space with baseball and soccer fields, volleyball and tennis courts, and a massive playground. Take the short stroll to Model Bakery, home of beloved and buttery English muffins.
Next up: the “Family Tasting” at Cakebread Cellars, where grownups sip wine and kids sip juice on a 45-minute tour of the winery and winery grounds. V. Sattui Winery is another great spot for a multigenerational tasting: little ones can play in a shaded and fenced-in courtyard area while adults sample wine at a picnic table.
For a taste of old-world Italy, source picnic goods at Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co., a family-owned Italian food shop where they still make olive oil in house and slice cheese with a piano string. It’s hard to resist tasting samples of salami and parmesan, but be sure to save room for a dinner of burgers, fries, and milkshakes at Gott’s Roadside, a throwback outdoor diner with modern sophistication.
Brunch is an art form in the northern reaches of Napa Valley, especially with kids in tow. Café Sarafornia, in downtown Calistoga, has a kids menu bursting with options such as silverdollar pancakes and grilled cheese. The open-air patio at Sam’s Social Club, the restaurant at Indian Springs Calistoga, is another great option, and is known for kid-friendly menu items such as churros and egg-in-a-hole.
After touring the grounds at Castello di Amorosa, a winery that replicates a 14th-century Tuscan castle, kids can sample grape juice while parents have the fermented stuff. Another great adventure: taking the aerial gondola 300 feet from the parking lot to the tasting room at Sterling Vineyards. End the day at Old Faithful Geyser of California, Napa’s version of the Yellowstone icon. This hot spring erupts from the earth every 15–30 minutes, shooting hot water up to 50 feet in the air.
These family-friendly resorts offer special activities to entertain the kids while parents enjoy a date night or head out for a wine tasting.
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley features a complimentary Kids For All Seasons program for ages 5–12. The fully staffed kids club allows parents to venture off property or to enjoy some spa time.
During summer months, Carneros Resort and Spa offers evening childcare as part of the Sunny Acres Kids Club. While parents have dinner on-site at FARM, the kids are entertained with hands-on activities, movies, dinner, and more.
At Silverado Resort, the next generation can learn to golf, play tennis, or swim during seasonal camps offered for specific summer dates. Sports and culinary camp classes are also available during major holidays including Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection adds Little Rancher’s Camp to the menu for June through August summer breaks. Kids can partake in a half-day of activities while their grown-ups treat themselves to some “we time.”
Napa Valley was made for bonding getaways and reunion revelry with groups of friends, whether celebrating a milestone birthday or soonto-weds. These group activities are tried-and-true crowd-pleasers.

“When I was a kid, the city of Napa’s population was 20,000. Now it’s upwards of 75,000, but it still feels like a small town. It is conducive to creativity. I can’t imagine doing what I do [elsewhere]. And I’ve been very heartened to see so much diversity coming to Napa vis-à-vis tourism. When I drive downtown and see all manner of people, it means vibrancy to me. It’s so wonderful to see so many happy faces enjoying our valley.

The Grape Crusher sculpture of a vineyard worker sits atop a scenic outlook in south Napa and can be seen along Highway 29. Created by Gino Miles, it’s the largest sculpture cast west of the Mississippi and weighs a whopping 6,000 pounds.
Love Wine Too by Richard Starks is on the grounds of Hotel Villagio. Part of the Yountville Art Walk, a rotating collection of public sculptures, the piece is for sale so get your photos before a collector calls dibs!
The charming simplicity of the I Heart Calistoga mural in downtown Calistoga on Lincoln Avenue calls for a photo op to declare your affection for the bohemian town.
There are countless ways to enjoy Napa Valley’s natural beauty and savor the fresh wine country air.
Navigate the Napa River on a guided kayak tour with Enjoy Napa Valley or rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards from Napa Valley Paddle. For a less laborintensive, up-close vantage of the river, take a Venetian-style gondola ride with Napa Valley Gondola. Plan a lake day at Lake Berryessa; Pleasure Cove Marina has boat rentals and all the gear you need for a day on the water.
Lace up your boots to hit the trails. Hike through hundreds of acres of woodlands and rolling hills at Moore Creek Park in St. Helena. Wander among ancient redwood trees excavated from volcanic ash in Calistoga’s Petrified Forest. Also in Calistoga, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park offers more than 10 miles of trails and Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is home to Mount Saint Helena Trail and Oat Hill Mine Trail—both reward your steps with panoramic views. On the outskirts of Napa, hike Sugarloaf Mountain at Skyline Wilderness Park for views of the San Francisco Bay (on a clear day). Take the short hike to Linda Falls on the western side of Howell Mountain in Angwin and appreciate the natural abundance within the preserve managed by the Land Trust of Napa County.
Avid cyclists and leisure cruisers have plenty of bike trails to choose from. When it’s fully completed, the paved 47-mile Napa Valley Vine Trail will stretch from the Vallejo Ferry Terminal all the way up to Calistoga. For now, cyclists can start exploring in south Napa and cruise 12.5 miles up to Yountville. The 8.2-mile St. Helena-to-Calistoga segment is also ready to ride. Skilled bikers can share the road with vehicles on the 27-mile Silverado Trail from Napa to Calistoga. At just 1.7 miles, the mostly flat Mossy Rock and Mid-Forest Loop through a forested area in Angwin is family friendly. Las Posadas State Forest Loop challenges mountain bikers with a moderate 4.5-mile trek. A network of bike rental outfitters and tour companies make getting on two wheels easy, especially if you want the extra boost of an e-bike.
There’s truly no better way to get the lay of the land and admire Napa Valley’s beauty than a hot air balloon ride. Book a flight with Balloons Above the Valley, Napa Valley Aloft, or Napa Valley Balloons, offering flights year round, conditions permitting. Be prepared to rise early—check-in is before sunrise. The views are worth it and you’ll remember the experience forever!
MOUNTAIN SCENIC DRIVE:
“One of the reasons we moved our family to the area was because of the access to outdoor activities. Napa Valley is a cyclist’s paradise. I love Howell Mountain’s challenging climbs, being rewarded with a descent into St. Helena, and ending with an espresso at our tasting room in downtown St. Helena. When friends and family visit, leisurely rides on the Napa Valley Vine Trail are a must. There’s nothing quite like finishing the day with a glass of Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and bruschetta on the Clif Family patio.
”Gary Erickson, co-founder and co-owner of Clif Family Winery and Farm
SCENIC DRIVE: SILVERADO TRAIL + HOWELL MOUNTAIN ROAD
Escape into nature on a quiet drive up Silverado Trail and onto Howell Mountain in St. Helena. Stop at Moore Creek Park on Lake Hennessey to stretch your legs and take in some of the most gorgeous views in the valley while sipping at mountainside wineries (38 miles/61 kilometers).
Family-owned Napa Valley Aloft is one of Napa Valley’s original hot air balloon operators, providing bucket-list experiences since 1978. Embark on a sunrise flight and soar above treetops with a bird’s-eye view of rolling hills and vineyards for an elevated adventure. Napa Valley Aloft is situated at the historic Estate Yountville, home to award-winning hotels and restaurants. (855) 944-4408 nvaloft.com Ge
From elaborate proposals and intimate elopements to grand celebrations and vow-renewal ceremonies, Napa Valley is the dreamiest of dream destinations for all things weddings and romance.
Get away with your nearest and dearest before the big day
If your idea of the ultimate bachelor or bachelorette party involves wine (or beer!) tasting, relaxing at the spa, and hitting the links, then Napa Valley is the destination for your crew. Celebrate the happy couple with a weekend filled with bonding adventures. Take your pick from hot air balloon flights, hikes, cooking classes, mud baths, bike rides, Michelin-starred feasts, and dance parties. Find more “Friend-cation” itinerary ideas on page 150.
Between its resplendent natural beauty, elegant venues, plethora of hotel options, abundant group-friendly entertainment offerings, and easy access to several major airports, couples and wedding guests love reveling in Napa Valley. Of course, the food and wine will be as unforgettable as the walk down the aisle, first dance, and boisterous toasts. The cherry on top? Perfect lighting for photography from sunrise to sunset, ensuring the big day—and every moment between the welcome reception and farewell brunch—will be captured in cinematic style.

Smaller properties you can have all to yourselves
Many of Napa Valley’s accommodations have 30 rooms or fewer, making boutique inns optimal for full buyouts. You can book the entire inn for your party and guests and make it a one-stop-shop destination wedding. Located just two blocks from Calistoga’s main street, The Francis House is reminiscent of a country manor in France. St. Helena’s Harvest Inn is a Tudor-style manor house with several spaces for weddings, including a dramatic vineyard-view terrace. Exchange vows and rings in a lavender garden, pergola, or courtyard at Bann at Oak Knoll Napa. Make the 19thcentury Churchill Manor your wedding day home, where timeless details include ornately carved moldings and mantles and a veranda that beckons for cocktail hour(s). In downtown Napa, the 17-room White House Inn also provides a stately backdrop for nuptials and photos.
“Napa Valley offers diverse venues with their own unique charm and character to perfectly suit every couple. Venues include stunning private estates, offering couples privacy and exclusivity; elegant boutique hotels give the couple and their guests a place to stay and celebrate together; and ranch settings offer couples the ability to put their personal design aesthetic on display. There are venues with views of the mountains, hills, and vineyards, as well as the perfect ballroom for the first dance. And, of course, don’t forget about the wineries that deliver on both beautiful venue options and delicious wine.
”Rebecca Johnson, event planner & owner, Rebecca Johnson Design and O’Donnell Lane
Napa Valley venues with accommodations, event spaces, catering, and more in-house vendor services set the stage for storybook weddings and pre and post celebrations.
Stanly Ranch can accommodate intimate events and grand celebrations alike; the handsome Glasshouse Barn is a modern indoor-outdoor space big enough to fit 450 guests. Host your ceremony on the outdoor terrace at Auberge du Soleil, then wow your guests with a Michelinstarred reception dinner prepared by the resort’s lauded culinary team. Say your vows on the hilltop vineyard lawn that’s surrounded by rolling hills at Carneros Resort and Spa or choose one of the indoor spaces with high ceilings and natural light. The Estate Yountville offers an array of elegant spaces: a barrel room, lush lawns, a vineyard, and a gazebo. Surrounded by nine acres of
vineyards, The Meritage Resort and Spa has 80,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces, including a wine cave. Alila Napa Valley is another luxurious resort with gorgeous vineyard backdrops. Silverado Resort has a full team of expert planners, multiple sites surrounded by serene natural beauty, and a gorgeous golf course. Calistoga’s Solage has a flawless event lawn bordered by roses, and indoor spaces including an airy farmhouse with sliding glass walls opening to outdoor terraces. Nearby, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley offers several on-site venues centered around the resort’s vineyard and winery, Elusa.
Make a statement with an untraditional, unexpected venue.
Usher in newly wedded bliss onboard the Napa Valley Wine Train, and make it a night to remember with your family and friends. In downtown Napa, the outdoor amphitheater at CIA at Copia makes for a dramatic backdrop, while the light-filled atrium is perfect for seated dinners. A former monastery and winery, St. Helena’s CIA at Greystone serves up old-world charm with stone-walled barrel rooms and ivy-covered walls. The culinary theme continues at Brasswood Estate, an expansive food and wine complex with multiple venue options. Featuring an Italian culinary program,
Tre Posti’s event spaces include a garden grove and vineyard. Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch delivers modern farmhouse vibes with its barn and vineyard-adjacent lawn. The Cask Room at Merryvale Vineyards is a spectacular setting for wedding receptions, surrounded by historic, 2,000-gallon casks lining the stone walls. Host a rustic, chic wedding at Triple S Ranch, a 12-acre estate in the mountains of Calistoga—up to 60 guests can stay on-site in the restored cabins and Victorian residences. Or embrace the arts with a ceremony in the sculpture meadow at di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art

Napa Valley is easily the most beautiful setting for public art. The best way to change an environment and make people feel good is to surround them in art. The more we do that, the better people feel.
