THE PA RA D OX ICAL VI SUALIZATI ON A R E S P O N S E T O I N D U S T R I A L WA S T E L A N D S C A P E S The Paradoxical Visualization takes place on a 137-acre site on the Outer Harbor of Buffalo, New York. Historically, the site did not exist; it is largely constructed of contaminated dredged material from the adjacent shipping channel. The site is surrounded on one side by an historically bustling shipping channel in Lake Erie and on the other by the Buffalo Skyway and some of the many remnants of heavy industrial activity in the city. The specific location as well as the square shape of it seem to emphasize the awesome manifestation of human forces and disturbance exerted in its creation. Instead of employing the typical design measures of rebuilding nature in a generic way, we want to celebrate this ubiquitous character of Buffalo while providing a landscape lab for research and observation of landscape components (plants, water, soil, landform) over time. The paradox of this project lies between the geometric forms and its naturalization. It can be understood as a highly dynamic interplay between axes of visual access, areas of exposure and shelter, and dynamic and static elements. Access to the site is highly dependent on vehicular transportation; one can only access it from exiting the highway and making a U turn to arrive at the parking lot. Under this condition, the design reconfigures the relationship between the site and people by initially creating three sets of primary viewshed projections onto the landform. As a visual cue, these viewshed nodes are proposed to provide a momentary spatial impression; a framed perspective that draws viewers to other areas of the site and encourages them to see the use of industrial waste in an unusually pronounced way. Secondary viewshed projections within the site allow users to experience a wide variety of spatial relationships - people will experience vastness, roughness, crowdedness, irregularity, rigidity, and softness. Based on the viewshed projections from the highway and on the site, we used both digital and physical modeling techniques to create landforms that emphasize the viewsheds, which are aligned with nodes such as important buildings, turning points, high points, and critical entrances and exits to the site. The landform is changed to obtain optimal visual connectivity with the traffic and forms interactive moments for people both within and leading to the site. The urban forest, which is located in the middle portion of the site, will eventually become a stratified forest. The plants will slowly take up toxins in the contaminated soil. Trees will compete with each other and the ones that do not survive will be replaced within one or two years to encourage a healthy, varied stand. Some of the seeds from the trees and surrounding plants will fall to the ground and germinate. Others will be carried by the wind, people, and animals to other areas of the site, such as the microtopography field at the southern end. The conditions that were created with large and small landforms will allow different kinds of seeds to germinate and the site will be become more diverse as the landforms themselves become victims of the climate and human activity. The site’s edges will gradually evolve from hard to soft, the open perimeter of the site will widen as water moves back and forth, and trees, grasses, and shrubs will grow in many different areas of the site providing greater understanding of landscape structure, durability, and health over time. The areas that will remain relatively unchanged are the weathering steel boardwalk, the sunken plaza, and the concrete viewing platform. With this juxtaposition, we hope to encourage people to view industrial waste and landscape change in a new way, opening up the paradox that it can be beautiful and productive.

Not only engaging the infrastructural dynamics of the dredging process, but also create an artistic and experiential landscape. acknowledging the importance of processes over time, the importance of ecological infrastructure in mediating between city and nature. To accomplish these objectives through a series of modular topographic manipulation using sediments, and a series of basins capture the dredge sediments, for cleansing and infiltration as the landform goes down. Within the controlled framework, flexible strategies are regenerated to respond to the varying site conditions over time. The system is organized following a parallelogram grid structures, forms a modular system that can expand and contract as necessary.

As the architecture is situated in a post-industrial area of Chicago, the project is about slowing down in the process in the architecture. Also to bring visitor a maze like experience. As patrons strolling in the building and experience different kind of mass ( Water is a body of mass, from water and confined space) through the journey, they would enjoy the process of observing, and rewarding experience.

M i s t C l u b | Chicago, IL The Mist Club situated on the top of the 900 North Michigan skyscraper, on the west side of the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. The lower level of the club is connected with the Four Seasons Hotel and 900 North Michigan Shops through elevators. With its exceptional location, the Mist take a grandiose panorama of the world famous John Hancock Center and Lake Michigan. The Mist is attempting to create atmosphere of voyeurism by using the quality of edgy and translucent elements. The Make Out Room on the lower level is inspired by the Rain Room by Random International. Falling water drops from the ceiling construct an obscure and misty room, however, patrons don’t get wet in the installation. Meanwhile, skylights are designed to enable the moonlight flow in, illuminating the bar area. An outdoor space is also attached to the lounging area on the upper level.

Group Project: Collaborated with Kate Wangngg

Physical Model

The club is to challenges the male dominated norms by developing a new fresh concept - an ideal and romantic roof top location. The club can also be seen as an interpretation vs traditional images of feminism. A edgy staircase is a presentation of ‘connecting’ inventing ways to encourage interaction.

Rain Room is a space of falling water through which it is possible to walkthrough a path without being drenched in the process. The Rainroom allowed intimacy encountering points where couples can make out, talk, wispering in the rain. With the moisture fill the air, visitors also can enjoy the best view of Fangge Wang Portfolio 2015 Chicago.

The Central Ribbon Park is a public park in Chabuchaer, Xinjiang, PRC, with a total area of 643,000 m2. The park does not solely function as a civil resting area; ecological conservation and cultural inheritance are the goals of the Central Ribbon Park as well. Water in northwestern China is greatly important. The Central Ribbon Park is designed to save and protect water, both underground and on the surface. Numerous species of trees and crops in the park serve as landscape and guardians of the groundwater. The design of each landscape observatories and the L-shape design of the park corresponds to the surrounding environment. Bicycle stations and pedestrian service stations are available every 1 kilometer and 150 meters, respectively. Citizens are encouraged to use these stations to avoid unnecessary long distance of bicycling or strolling. The east-west part of this L-shape park is also designed as a reconstruction of the Great Journey to the West in the Xibe history. Four main nodes stand for the four important towns in the Great Journey to the West. Exhibitions and signage are provided in these nodes for citizens to cherish.
