This project is for a class called, making business from ideas. We represented members of staff from Starbucks. We analyzed how Starbucks deals with 4 components, which are important to operate business and make a design that have business sense. Then use the information and lessons learned to create more new businesses with new design concepts for Starbucks and come to the final concept by consolidating all ideas generated.

Circle of Competitor It has positioned itself in China as a daily luxury and an affordable premium experience.However, the last few years have seen a market share drop of Starbucks. Some competitive competitors like Costa have shown their potentials.The border has been BLURRED, there are more stores providing coffee,space and experience. Learning from the outer circle of the competitors, there are some innovation points.

Trends There are several trends of Starbucks. The first one is better service. The staff write down the names of customers on the coffee cup to identify different customers. The second one is that users want experience and high quality coffee, rather than just a cup of coffee. The third one is the diversification of the business model. The last one is to apply high-tech.

Visual Brand Language Starbucks tried to combine the brand with some scenarios which Chinese people are quite familiar with. If Starbucks can strengthen these connections, it will bring a powerful effect.Nowadays, the Interior decoration style is business casual style, this kind of decoration have less attraction to nonbusiness people. If Starbucks decide open some experience stores for other kinds of people in the future, we will try to use some different style to decorate the stores.

Why: Starbucks exists in many cities and towns and its marketing size is constantly growing larger. Meanwhile, many people go to Starbucks because they need a familiar place to help them accommodate any unfamiliar cities.

How: So, we are always seeking to a connection between familiarity and unfamiliarity. It is a place to make people feel safe, familiar and comfortable.

What: Stores everywhere as sign for visitors, English-speaking

staffs as consultants for visitors, hometown-flavor coffee as a gift for visitors; and, what’s more, we made a bus to provide a short tour for the visitors. We named it Starbus.

Drying Rack 3/2014-6/2014 Group work with Guo Ruizhen, Liu Mengyi, Shi Le. Responsible for concept creation, ergonomics research, 3D moderl, rendering, stucture design.

The current products available seem to show certain limits in mobility and appearance according to our investigation. Besides, they occupy large area even if folded. Thinking of those defects, we base our design on two main additional functions, that is saving space and being moved easily. While, other problems occur when we take those two functions into consideration, such as balance maintenance, clothes capacity and the load-bearing capability of the stressed point. Finally, the current project is adopted after full consideration.

ST Aerospace Economy Class Seat Design 9/2013-4/2014 Group work with Wang Yong, Chen Jiangnan, Guo Ruizhen(ZJU), Wang Yingbei, Jia Yifan(SUTD) Responsible for concept creation, ergonomics research, 3D moderl, rendering, stucture design. This project is for competition hold by ST Aerospace. To make consumers enjoy the time in the airplanes becomes a quite critical problem for all airline companies. And our chair is designed under the consideration of how to relax passengers during the travel period. Ideas of the chair are based on ergonomics which is to improve the degree of comfort, aesthetics which is the contour and appearance of the chair, innovation, functionality, material, cost and weight.

Cutting a triangle from the seat pan is the easiest way that can solve the problem that passengers who sit inside have difficulties to walk out.


Cup Holder Cup holder is designed to prevent drink spillage from cup. Whichever direction of sachet shaking, tri-axis design would keep the hemisphere inside stable.

Adjustable Tray Table When press the side button, the tenon will be back into the axis,then the table can rotates. After adjust to suitable position, the tenon will go out and fixed the table.

Considering about the reality and trying to make the best use of its function, we finally decided to use the traditional way but do some improvement.

Puzricks 1/2013-2/2013 Group work with Shi Le, Chen Jiangnan, Xing Lu, Chen Jian, Hong Yihan Responsible for concept creation, 3D model, animation, This project is for a class called, from play to innovation design. The target group is kids. After grouping the picture of kids, and analyzing the kids' behaviors, we started brainstorm. From 6 design concepts, we finally chose Puzricks. Building block is almost every kid's favorite game. However, with the development of technology, electronic devices make bad influence on kids. Puzricks is a combination of tradition and technology. We try to make hands-on activities back to their life.

Interaction & Technology Location Intelligence Puzricks can remember where and how you build the shape with every single brick.This kind of location identifying and recording is achieved by built-in gyroscopes.

With the increase of health issues associated with pollution, people start to pay attention to the harmful radiation and air pollution in the environment. Designing wearable devices, the radiation detectors are light and portable that allows users to better understand their surroundings. Similarly, despite all these prototyping constraints, we want to prove that the concept of inventing such a device is possible especially with its low cost and ease of production. We hope similar kind of wearable device can improve people’s lives and we can use what we have learnt in class to make the world a better place.

Structures

It is important to determine the orientation of the element that produces the maximum normal stresses and the maximum shear stress. Therefore, this part will be where the product is thin and most easily to bent, and this part will determine how strong the device is, since this is where the largest deformation will occur when the user wears it.

Circuits

Our objective is to use the MOSFETs to act as a control to switch on lights and activate the buzzer according to the output given by the sensors. Ultimately, we want the device to lit up in blue which indicates low level of pollution level and lit up in red (with buzzer sound off) when pollution reaches hazardous level.


Mode Selection DIY Mode is to create your own music. According to natural movements, vibration sensor, pressure sensor, angle sensor and distance sensor can change the tone and beats. Professional Mode is to remix an existing song. MusiClean remix the selected song according to the frequency of your movement.

Instrument Selecton The instrument type of each small device can be controled by Docking Plantform. There is a screen on the top of the Docking Plantform.By dragging the icons on the screen, the function of the devices can be controled.

Docking Platform Docking Plantform is responsible for functions of speaker, charger,and central computing.Each time the device be moved, the sensor will send signals to the Docking Plantform.

Clip-Music Composer The music composers are the devices of the MusiClean. Make the devices in the same shape with clip. So they can be simply fastend to all kind of cleaning supplies. One MusiClean has more than four small devices.


7/2014-8/2014 Japan Group work with Jinbee(Seoul National University), Benjamin(Nanyang Technological University), Souma(Chiba University), Zhou Jingchu(The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) Responsible for concept creation, 3D moderl, rendering, animation, Arduino. This project is design for Asia Summer Joint Design Workshop. MusiClean is a new kind of musical interaction for more than 3 people. We tried to combine music with human natural behavior. After brainstorms, we decided to focus on family. Our goal was to make doing housework a pleasant activity by setting up a band among family members. Thus, we used Arduino to implement functionality in our final demostration.

Westlake 3/2014-4/2014 Individual Work In the contemporary era of information explosion, an increasing number of people feel panic when they have to make decision, including which way to go or what to eat. In this case, apps provide different clues to help people make choices. However, as the demands are increasing, it is harder for people to understand presenting information. Inspired by radiation chart, this intuitive interface provides multidimensional information, which users can filter the information by slider buttons in the radiation chart.

Subway Map 4/2014-5/2014 Individual Work As the number of subway lines increase, there are more people feel confused, in face of the complicated lines and transfer stations, especially when they move on a new place. Actually, people don’t need to know how the lines look like. All they have to know is where are they now, which station to transfer and to get off, how much they should pay for trip, and some detail information. Based on these demands, I design a new interface and a new interaction mode for subway map.

This project is for Industrial Design Competition, hold by Zhejiang University. Planar Tableware is cut from a whole piece of bamboo. At first, to find the best way to cut, we tried to cut up a piece of paper. Then we found bamboo is a kind of green environmental material. Because of simple technology and low cost, this kind of production suits to scale manufacture. Finally, we used laser cutters to implement our design concept.

The design is a whole piece of bamboo consisting of a complete set of tableware (spoon, fork, chopsticks & knife) in an orderly way without waste, which makes full use of the materials and has higher economic efficiency. • Less work preocedures needed • Good flexiblity of the material • Close to nature and eco-friendly • Easy to transport and deliver

The main functions of band-aid, an indispensible emergency supply in daily life, are to absorb the exudation infection. But nowadays, while using the band-aid it happens to have overlapping of fabric, which prevents and sweat from penetrating. That will make it less comfortable and easy to cause infection. The new produ increases the breathability and save the materials. The circle on the back will turn into red while be expo remind the users to change the bend- aid in time.

Breath 9/2014-12/2014 Group work with Zhu Qi, Xu Zhuopu, Shi Le. We deconstruct the traditional earth building and apply them in contemporary design. The performance of raw soil materials include adsorption to particles, optimum moisture retention, and temperature adjustment, which give us a feeling that it can breathe and it is alive. Based on this feature, we made a humidor for plant, cakes with smell of grain, and specimens to present it.
