01_Rio Remix Studio Sangue Bom, Spring 2013, GSAPP - Advanced Studio VI Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Studio Critics: Keith Kaseman/ Raul Correa-Smith Solo Work As the Avenida Brazil is a very important composition in the city Rio de Janeiro, how to take advantage of the avenue but not to separate the avenue with the urban life could become a potential topic.

In this studio, we have 20 sites along the main avenue Avenida Brazil in Rio de Janerio, from the city center to the outside of the city. Each site has specific urban condition according to it’s location. The avenue becomes a important but also aggressive element in the urban life. The context is separated by the highway, and people could only walk within their own neighborhood. With this existing problem, it’s a good way to use the open spaces around the avenue as the landing points and create a space with integrated program performing as a community center for the surrounding area. With the transformation of the ‘legs’ and the circle in the center to control the circulation, this certain form could adapt to different site. Also, the buildings could have different relationships with the avenue. The urban texture will be ‘remixed‘ by this intervening space. 6

With the specific condition of site 08, this gesture could become different urban program with different space operations. It could become landscape element, or part of the transportation. It could help mix the existing program, or this building could become a new city center. Besides programmatic proposal, the space itself could have different possibilities. Because the building is connecting different area such as factories or informal housing, each segment of the spaces could have different use and they can be considered separately. The gallery space, cafe, office and other program could all fit into this building, and the circulation is organized in the center.

Rio Touch? On Site 08, there are factory and food market on one side of the avenue, and neighborhood on the other side. The community center becomes a hub in this area and people could enter from different point on the site. While touching the ground with several ‘legs‘, the major space is lifted above the ground as a bridge. Meanwhile, the ‘bridge‘ provides shade to people, as Rio has tropical climate with sunny weather and frequent rain. The roof will become a park and walking area, with access to the different inside area and also viewpoint to see the city.

Rio Inside? Site 04 is a specific site with a river going underneath the avenue. This site is also closer to the city center. At first I tried to use the method of touching the ground and lift the building to become a mega overpass, but what if lifting the avenues itself and free the ground space? And then the whole ground space could become open to pedestrian people. At the same time, the BRT station and the vehicles could be directly connected with the building. As the scale of this proposal is quite big, the spaces inside are divided to several parts and could contain different program. Each of the space chunks could be designed separately according to the different purpose of use. 11

13

Background & Concept Mental disease has become one of the most serious health problems to human beings, and many people even die from mental disease. Among the mental diseases, depression is the most common disease. However, people haven't pay close attention to depression and there are a increasing number of people die from it. This project is a health care centre especially designed for people suffering from depression. Unlike the traditional sanatorium, this project is more like a community rather than a hospital. Comparing to the space form of rooms connected by a corridor, we prefer a loose space with more freedom for people to move from one building to another. People can choose different route form one building to another according to their mood. Also, with the variable route, people may find new things which may make them feel excited.

A Day of Life The community provides peole with varieties of possibilities of life, and everyone could find their own way living here according to their needs. Thus, people will feel more free here and that could help them to relax. From morning to night, you can walk between inside and outside. Sometimes you will stay with crowd of people, enjoy the lively atmosphere, while sometime you stay by the water by yourself just to relax. Everyday’s life will have some difference and you can always explore this community with joy and surprise. The community has residential area, activity area, and therapy area. They don’t have clear boundaries. Instead, They are all mixed together. People will not recognize the boundary and that would help prevent people from having the fear of the hospital.

17

There are three scales of the buildings with the three main programs. However, the community is mainly occupied with small scale building, which makes the walking experience more comfortable for people. The major residential area, activity center and hospital is connected with other small buildings, and the space connecting them becomes shared cafe and activity space, and also rooftop plaza. The buildings become more private space surrounding the main buildings. The various openings of the buildings provide people with views for different side, which helps people to get more interesting space experience. The grid system is not performing as blocks, but more like landscape element. It gives direction to people and sometimes it goes into the building and people could see what’s going on inside the space while they passing by. 18

Programs Residence Activity Therapy

Vertical Space There are bridges that connecting different buildings. Not simply linking two points, the bridges are actually providing the space with more diversity and people could have different view both from the ground and from the bridge. When people passing by different kind of buildings, they could see different activities. The bridge is connecting the public space directly, and it’s not along the grid system, so the space is more dynamic and less rigid. There are no clear boundary of the inside and out side of the spaces. The building itself could become landscape element. 20

03_Culture Incubator Folk Arts Exhibition Center and Workshops 4-Week Studio Work, Spring 2010, Tianjin University Critics: Yang Wei Solo Work

23

Why Focusing on Folk Arts? Folk arts are just like the traditional Chinese buildings, reflecting the culture of China. In the past, people used to enjoy the traditional play, and were willing to buy the handicrafts. However, these days, folk arts are facing the danger of disappearing. The intangible heritage is struggling to survive. Under this circumstance, I decide to focus on how to recall people's memory of folk arts and thus to help protect this precious spiritual

24

wealth. Unlike the ar ts we all k now, the traditional folk arts are not just the quiet exhibition. Folk arts have strong connections with people's activities. There are many kinds of interesting plays, such as the shadow puppet show, the stilt walker show and so on. Also, the process of the artists making the handicrafts is part of the folk arts. Each kind of artwork is produced in a

unique way. Therefore, in the exhibition center design, I give the artists working space and people could see how these artworks are produced while visiting the exhibition. This method has several benefits: one is that the artists will have working spaces in the town, the other is that people will know better about folk arts. What's more, the interaction between visitors and artists may bring commercial opportunities to the folk artists, and thus help this kind of art to

survive. The site of this project is in the middle of Wu'an, an old town in North China, where there are many old buildings. This folk exhibition center will play the role of both exhibition hall and the place for temple fair, which is held in the festivals, for people to gather together, watching the traditional plays and buy the handicrafts.

Step 1. Put several volumes containing the exhibition spaces and workshops of folk artists on the site.

Step 2. Cut the volumes to form the entrance and yard. Lift the volume as the multifunctional hall.

Step 3. Make the ground down to define the visiting area.

Step 4. Push the volume to create space for people to stay, and to make the lane space more interesting.

Step 5. Lift several volumes to be public spaces, such as cafe and lounge.

Step 6. Use the roof space to create large activity space for city residents.

Step 7. Create vertical connection between the roof and ground, and to bring light in.

25

The Workshops There are several workshops in each volume. People can see the workshops through the window from outside. Once entering a building, people could see a series of different workshops. Each of the workshops in the exhibition center consists of two parts: display and producing. People can see how the folk artists making the handicrafts. Walking through the building, the visitors can see various kinds of artwork. They can even see the shows, such as shadow puppet show in the hall. The exhibition part is open to visitors, and they can see the artists working through the window. In most workshops, a storage room and a rest room is design to help the artists work more comfortably.

Roof Platform The roof platform is open to the citizens. In normal times, it could be used as leisure space for the visitors to rest. During festivals, the platform could be used as "temple fair" space. Temple fair is a traditional Chinese activity during large festivals. In the temple fair, the artists came to sell their artworks, and there are many performs here. As the temple fair is still existed in China, I think it is a practical way to use the platform as the place for the temple fair in order to help the folk arts to be known by more people. 30

Spaces Strategies As the exhibition is open to citizens, the outdoor space design is important. There are several t ypical spatial relationships in this project. Firstly, the rooms on the second floor are like islands in the sea, right connected with the platform and give people a space to relax. Secondly, the void spaces between the floors help people see up and down from each floor. Thirdly, there are several small sinking spaces on the platform to help define the resting area. 32

Site: Kartal Pendik, Istanbul Kartal Pendik is planned to be the new sub-center in Asian-Istanbul. The plan includes a central business district, luxury residential developments, cultural facilities such as concert halls, museums, theaters, and leisure locations including a marina and tourist hotels. With the development of Kartal Pendik according to Zaha’s masterplan, the urban condition inside and outside the planning boundary will become

36

more and more different. People who live outside Kartal-Pendik and people who work inside will be living in a totally different world. How to minimize the difference under the circumstance of urban development is what we concern about. Instead of having a tram line going in the middle of the Kartal Pendik site, we changed it as a ring at the outside boundary of the site. Thus, both people

from the surrounding neighborhood and people who work in Kartal Pendik could use the tram. The site I chose is located between Kartal Pendik and surrounding neighborhood, with the tram line going though the site and a tram station in the site. In the site there are existing residential buildings and part of the buildings inside the Kartal Pendik is remained in Zaha’s masterplan.

Research 01_ Communal Flats in Moscow The communal flats in Moscow is a kind of apartment in which several families share the same kitchen and bathroom. Based on this fact, the kitchen actually becomes the communal area in this apartment which could affect the space that each family are using. There are usually 2-7 families in a communal flat. By making a script of the characters in a specific communal flat, and assuming their occupation of the space in this apartment in a day, the typology of the apartment is actually changing through the time.

Research 02_ 7 Train in New York As a lifted train in New York, the 7 Train has a huge influence to the surroundings. It brings people and also noise to the urban environment, and people have already find ways to adapt to various condition caused by 7 Train. Under such circumstances, we assume that if one day the 7 train is not used anymore, we could use the already formed adaptability and the structure of the subway to introduce some new program to the city.

Project_Hybrid Interior Near the boundary of Kartal-Pendik, there are still many existing neighborhood which are mostly informal house built by the resident themselves. The proposal is to build a urban scale campus together with a public library, in order to create shared program for both group of people. 43

44

Bridge&Ramp

Paths&Courtyard

Bathroom

Bathroom is the smallest common space in communal flat. Because of its size and use, the bathroom could only be occupied by one family at one time.

Kitchen

Kitchen is a large common area shared by each family. The space is divided into several parts to each family, while some communal facilities belongs to everyone.

Corridor

Although the corridor is used as the circulation, there are program in it. Part of the corridor is occupied and used as storage.

Communal Space Type Inspired by the communal flats in Moscow, the communal space in the campus could be defined in three type: individual space, shared space, and circulation with program. 45

Path in one Dimension

Path in several Dimensions

By using the method of folding, the paths in the site could adapt to the existing buildings by changing the orientation. 46

The program of public library is organized by a public path. By folding between the existing buildings, the path somehow affected the inside space. Not only going through the space between the buildings, the paths also go inside the buildings to form space with different privacy. Thus, the open reading area and more private space such as classroom is integrated eventually. On the left, the image shows a typical reading area in the building, together with several classrooms. The path here is not totally visible as a corridor, but as a method to influence the typology of the space.

Draw a 4*4 grid.

Cut off the piece , use it as floor. 48

This studio is to design the space inside a 16m*16m cube. I used same element but in different way for the facade and the inside space. The openings on the facade becomes the solid parts on the floor. By repeating similar operation, the facade and interior space have got interesting relationship. The space becomes like a folding paper, without a clear distinguished floor or facade. The space at both direction is mixed and integrated. This cube is designed as a small gallery. The facade is mainly solid at the exhibition space, but becomes open in the center, where most circulation happens. The floors have 2m difference in height on two sides, and then they could form a spiral circulation. 49

Phoenix_Farming Zone As the weather becomes warmer in 2100, greenhouse becomes a major way for farming. Meanwhile, there are algae farming as clip-on items on the existing residential area. The wind turbine and wind belt is used as energy produce facilities for farming.

50

Phoenix_Bike Path Under the extremely hot weather, the bike path becomes the major low speed transportation method. It’s leading people to their work places, and also performs as energy generator. There are carbon capture system, wind turbine and solar panel on the path.
