WHO

WHERE Pulau Suri, Tumpat, Kelantan

PASAR TERAPUNG TUMPAT Floating market is synonymous with Bangkok and several other places in Thailand, but many are not aware that Malaysia also has its own version of floating markets and they can be found in Kelantan. The concept is similar with the ones in Kelantan located in the village areas, with traders selling mostly local produce, such as coconut jelly, palm sugar, honey, “nasi berlauk”, traditional delicacy and local salad, such as “kerabu nipah”.

One of the floating markets at Pantai Suri has existed since 2016 and is still in operation, though with lesser boats, only 10 the most, but since two weeks ago, another floating market opens at a site about 500 metres away.

In Tumpat, two locations in Pantai Suri are becoming p o p u l a r destinations for visitors and tourists because of their floating markets.

, s i g r s s s r .

“The clear water, the tranquil natural surroundings and a local community reliant on the island’s natural resources for survival have the potential to draw in tourists. Kayakers will get a feel of the village life in Pulau Suri, ” These boat traders are working hard to preserve the culture of the Malays who are known merchants since the era of the Melaka Sultanate by trading their wares including on boats and sampan.

Kelantan Tourism Malaysia director Hafiz Hazin said the floating markets at Pantai Suri, which are open every Saturday, have become popular attractions for tourists in Tumpat. Even during the pandemic, it is still crowded with local visitors from other states.

But with the lack of safety precaution from the COVID-19, the risk of transmitting the influenza is higher. Thus, it is very much important for this issue to be considered as part in the innovative architectural design.

It is styled after the famous floating market in Khlong Hae, Songkhla, Thailand. The Star (21 September 2016). A fisherman, Abdul Ghani Dolah, 68, said although the floating markets in Kelantan are not as “great” as those in Thailand, they still provide a similar experience to the locals and visitors. - The Sundaily (27 March 2019).

Small Space for Big Programmes Floating market in Pulau Suri is a place where visitors come to enjoy traditional food with cheaper prices, experience the cultural entertainment being held and anual celebrations, social gatherings with relatives, participating in sport events and shopping for traditional goods. Thus, with all the combine programmes the existing vanue is well packed in a chaotic manner. A well planning needs to be considered in combining all the above programmes in an appropriate scale while maintaining the cultural sense of place.

“Ada dua lokasi strategik dan sesuai mewujudkan pasar terapung kedua iaitu Taman Mahkota dan Pengkalan Datu, Tumpat. “Kedua-dua lokasi bertepatan kerana kawasan berkenaan mempunyai kemudahan lengkap termasuk surau dan taman permainan. - Berita Harian (22 March 2017). We will need to upgrade the infrastructure at Pantai Suri to make it more convenient for traders and visitors at the floating markets, he added. The Sundaily (27 March 2019)

Kelantan:

A Living Heritage Every state in Malaysia is unique in its own ways. History dates the origin of Kelantan from the ascension of a Thai prince Long Yunus to the throne. The state then went through Thai and British influences before becoming part of Malaysia in 1957. The name ‘Kelantan’ means ‘Land of Lightning’ evident by the many thunderstorms that rock the state each year. Kelantan is a time capsule that preserves various forms of Malay cultural heritage. Tucked away in the Northeastern region of Peninsular Malaysia, Kelantan is the epitome of Malay culture, having been preserved over centuries. A general population of 1.4 million people, 95% of them are Malays. The rest of 5% are Chinese, Indians and Thais.

BRICOLLAGE

GENIUS LOCI Spirit of Place

“City as a museum & city must look like a theatre in an artistic way” - Collin Rowe -

“Different places have their own special characteristic and uniqueness. It’s a phenomenon that cannot be created. It’s existing to the site. You can analyze it through human context ie; the social culture of a place, the human activities and also the natural context which is more on the physical characteristics of the site”

THESIS STATEMENT The main purpose of this thesis is to create a Mixed-use Cultural Centre for the existing floating market into an idyllic environment. Kelantan is well known state in Malaysia which offers a rich culture and tradition with other unique culture influences by other country. One of the most prominent culture vanue created is Pasar Terapung in Tumpat. The local economic relies on this place itself due to the well received attentions from local visitors itself but with the lack of cultural identity and facilities it is not listed as one of the top most visited places in Malaysia despite its own unique traits. Hence, through this proposed idea, this essentially serves the purpose by offering production supports for local traders including the economy, increase in visitors, enhancing cultural identity, programmes, COVID-19 design strategies, diversified and convenient transportations.

AIM Cultural Centre as part of a top rated tourist attraction as well as to expand the socio economic of the locals in Tumpat, Kelantan.

BUILDING FORM, LANG Floating market is synonymous with Bangkok and several other places in Thailand, but many are not aware that Malaysia also has its own version of floating markets and they can be found in Kelantan. The concept is similar with the ones in Kelantan located in the village areas, with traders selling mostly local produce, such as coconut jelly, palm sugar, honey, “nasi berlauk”, traditional delicacy and local salad, such as “kerabu nipah”.

The spacing of the planks varies around openings to admt light & air

When off-grid, as in the case of this one, solar panels generate energy that is accumulated in a battery system and used when necessary at 12 or 110 volts. All blackwater and greywater pass through an aerobic and biological t r e a t m e n t station through a three-phase biodigester system to finally return to the environment in conditions of physical, chemical, and bacteriological purity.

Structural comparison: Before moonsoon season

House remains on the ground under normal conditions but will rise when flooding occurs.

Mooring posts/Steel posts allow house to rise and fall with minimal lateral sway.

Capable with high density house Minimize carbon footprint.

OFIT CONSTRUCTION

Structural comparison: During moonsoon season

(October, November, Disember, January) As the waters rose, the buildings would rise, too, sliding up the pillars and floating on the water’s surface. When the waters receded, the houses would descend to their original positions.

THE TRANSFORMER The transformers are necessary at the point of use to step the voltage down to safer levels • for domestic scale buildings transformers are often pole mounted • for commercial buildings, a more complex electrical system is required • commercial building can puchase their power at cheaper higher voltage rates and operate their own transformers • size of transformer can be approximated from the ft2 of floor area to be served: - A unit 12’x8’x8’(h) can serve up to 10 000ft2 - A unit 20’x20’x11’(h) can serve up to 100,000 ft2 - A unit 20’x40’x11(h) can serve up to 300,000 ft2 - A unit 20’x80’x11’(h) can serve up to 1,000,000 ft2

THE SWITCHGEAR Size of switchgear can be approximated from the ft2 of floor area to be served: - A unit 12’x8’x8’(h) can serve up to 10 000ft2 - A unit 30’x20’x11’(h) can serve up to 100,000 ft2 - A unit 30’x40’x11(h) can serve up to 300,000 ft2 - A unit 30’x80’x11’(h) can serve up to 1,000,000 ft2

TRANSFORMER CALCULATIONS Based on ARK 754 slide, Total area (Nama Bangunan) is 86,211 sqft which not exceed 100,000 sqft so a unit of 30’x20’x11’(h) can serve up to 100,000 sqft So the building required one unit of switch gear

SWITCH GEAR CALCULATIONS Mixed-use Cultural Centre Pasar Terapung BUILT UP AREA = 86,211 Sqft / 8009 sqm Therefore the size of genset room based on rule of thumb is, = ( 8,009 sqm / 1000 sqm ) x 2 sqm = 16.02 SQM SIZE OF GENSET ROOM REQUIRED

BUILDING SERVIC

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM - SE

There are two main types of sewerage system in Malaysia. A premise sewerage system is either connected to a public sewage treatment plant or an individual septic tank.

PUBLIC SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

INDIVIDUAL SEPTIC TANK

An individual septic tank is a tank that is located underground, either on the front, back or side of the building. Septic tanks that comply with the standards stipulated serve as a tank that collects wastewater from a building and has a limited treatment capacity. The main purpose is only to collect wastewater from daily activities at home such as bathing, laundry cleaning or dishwashing, and toilet usage. As wastewater is collected in the septic tank, coarse and heavy particles will settle at the bottom of the tank, forming sludge while clean water will flow out from the surface of the tank to the drain or ditch. AIR CONDITIONING & V

Basic Principle of Air Conditioning Absorb energy in one place and release it in a nother place. Air conditioning is the process of treating the temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution of the air. Split Unit Split systems have an indoor unit which provides heating and cooling and an outdoor unit which houses the heat rejection coil and compressors. Refrigerant is circulated between the indoor and outdoor units. These systems are most common in small buildings. HVAC (Air Cool Package Unit) Package units have heating, compressor, heat rejection and compressors all in one unit, and are typically mounted on the roof and connected to the occupied spaces via a duct through which the heated or cooled air is provided. Water cooled package units have heating, cooling and compressor mounted in a single unit mounted in the ceiling space of the occupied area, and reject heat to a condenser water loop which is cooled by a cooling tower and may also be heated by a boiler

All three of the above types may be “reverse cycle”, whereby the refrigerant system can provide heating or cooling. Alternatively, the refrigerant system may provide cooling only while heating is provided by electric duct heaters or hot water coils.
