About this project

NYALA SNEAKER COLLECTION — AN INTERCITY SHOE The Nyala sneaker is designed in Berlin and inspired by the architecture of its massive buildings, long visual axes, high ceilings and beauty that is inconspicuous. The sneaker collection is also influenced by the vibrancy and eclectic nature of Nairobi where the designer, Emo Rugene, grew up and it is produced in Addis Abeba, “The New Flower”. The Nyala collection is an embodiment of intercity and multi-culturally inspired footwear that cuts across three capital cities to give the wearer an urbanite product to complete their outfit. Nyala is an Amharic word meaning Gazelle, paying tribute to the beauty, elegance and agility of this animal, which was a central part of the design process.

THE SHOE

The collection is unisex and available in three colors. The shoes are designed on an ankle high silhouette with a rounded toe box and completed by a flexible rubber outsole to give the shoe the comfort and stability of an everyday shoe. Each piece in the collection represents an element in the savanna and this is why every piece has a different upper and outsole color combination. The uppers are made of sheep leather that is light and durable, and on the inside of every shoe the tongue is lined by textile sourced from Kenya to give the shoes an authentic feel. Getting a pair of Nyala sneakers means that you literally wear a hand-made piece of work that has passed through three capital cities. This is why we refer to them as intercity sneakers and we hope they will again go round the world with you.

OUR PRODUCTION PARTNERS To guarantee you our supporter maximum quality we sourced for a producer who could deliver a world-class finish. Our partner in Ethiopia has been in operation for over 24 years of which 20 years have been also in exporting of footwear. The process of developing the current design has taken us a period of over one year and we have ironed out the errors to give you the perfect shoe. The durability, comfort and quality are guaranteed and we are confident when you receive a pair you will get maximum satisfaction.

The shoes do not only come in boxes but also in customized unique shoe bags that are handmade by a community-based organization in Nairobi called the Seed of hope. Seed of Hope is a training programme for destitute youth, mainly girls who have not had the opportunity to attend secondary school. Seed of Hope students are granted training and counselling free of charge on the basis of the difficult circumstances from which they come. The students get training during 6 months to 2 years in business skills and vocational skills including fashion design, motor vehicle mechanics, hair and beauty therapy and basic computer packages. The comprehensive syllabus equips students with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence they need to pursue independence and a self-reliant future. 3. Nyala Sneaker

As part of our project, various Kenyan and German creatives have came on board to help make the Nyala sneaker a reality. We would particularly like to highlight them and the role they played in giving us what we have as of now. Musa Omusi Kenyan artist, illustrator and art director Musa Omusi, from the Nairobi-based Creative studio MADE WITH LOVE, has collaborated with Afroshoes for the Nyala launch. Musa has made the vibrant and colourful illustrations of the Nyala sneakers that can be found on the postcards and mobile covers. www.musaomusi.com www.madewithlove.co.ke Sarah Waiswa She is a Ugandan born Kenya based freelance documentary and portrait photographer with an interest in exploring identity on the African continent, particularly the New African Identity. Her desire is to illustrate the plight of various social issues on the continent, in a contemporary and non-traditional way. She helped with the product images. Instagram @lafrohemienwww.sarahwaiswa.com Mutua Matheka Kenyan photographer Mutua Matheka, also known as Truthslinger, has shot some of the images of the Nyala collection. Mutua is passionate about showcasing the beauty and cultures

of Africa with the world. He is famous for his cinematic photos of Nairobi and the spectacular travel photography from his road trips with creative collective OneTouch. Mutua’s portfolio also features assemblages with a special twist and eye for texture, composition and detail this is why we found him a good match to shoot some of the images of the Nyala. Instagram @truthslingerwww.mutuamatheka.co.ke Malte Euler The Berlin based creative helped to revamp our logos and designed the stickers that are part of our afroshoes starter pack.
