You all know him as Iyanya but his real name is Onoyom Mbuk who is a songwriter, performer and singer from Mavin Records. Known for his great stage presence, charisma, smooth dance moves and great physique, I got a chance to speak to him on his recent Kenyan media tour about life, love for his fans and his current projects. Here is what he had to say: You seem to have a lot of love for Kenya and East Africa. Having collaborated with Sauti Sol, Diamond Platinumz and other artists, are you planning on doing more within and outside Africa? Yes, Rkelly as I’ve grown up listening to him. I would also like to work with Khaligraph Jones.I need to reach out to other continents to promote African music. Would you say that you owe most of your success to your roots in Calabar? Yes it has but Lagos played a bigger musical role. If it were not for music, would you go on to pursuing Business Management? Yes I would. I’ve noticed some elements of hip-hop in your music, since you used to rap in your younger days with the name ‘Lofty’? Why did you stop rapping?
Don’t even go there(laughs)…I used to wear big jeans and hoodies, but that wasn’t the life I was able to keep up with, as I’m a versatile artist and I wanted to grow my musical sound. So far so good. Where did you learn how to dance so well as seen in most of your music videos like ‘Kukere’ and ‘Ur Waist’? I discovered a new dance called Makosa, and at first kept practicing it especially when I saw four girls doing the dance moves. I then caught up fast and came up with my own dance styles which I incorporated in all my music videos and performances. What are some of the things that stand out for you about Kenya? I love Kenya so much and I’ve received a good reception from the people. Like the other night at B-Club I felt like I was at Club Quilox back home in Lagos. I had a great time there. What does the song ‘Upto Something’ really talk about and was it based on a real life situation? It was to introduce the new EP as Mavin Group, saying we’re back and ready to take over the music scene. How do you manage to maintain your good looks and remain at the top of your musical game? I eat right and work out a lot.
