Yung Nnoiz: Back to Basics

Why Beat Boxing and how long have you been doing it for? I’ve been doing it professionally for about two years now, but I got introduced to it in 2010/2011.Ive been rapping since class 6 and going for shows. There’s this Indian guy I met who wasn't that good but proved me wrong. We did shows together as we would merge beat boxing with poetry. I would express myself freely without people judging me as it was my way of flowing emotions to people. How did your family take it when they found out you are a rapper/beat boxer? I grew up in Western Province as I came to Nairobi at 16 years of age. I used to write lyrics which my father whooped me for and burnt them. It was a start up for me to create more networks waiting for my big break. I am doing it as a career now although both of my parents are educationists. I’ve had enough shows that pay well. People really support me.It comes as a form of expression plus its business. I do it strategically as I have 3 brothers ahead of me. Do you sing and dance as well? I don't sing or dance because of my physique since a young age. I wasn't really passionate about it.I sound musical in whatever I do. When you're not performing what else do you do with your time? I’ve done poetry, car hire and academics. I have the passion as it bears more fruit and building trust in you. What would you say about the direction Hip-Hop has taken so far in this country?

Kenya doesn't push it so much. Our influence from the West is rife like Kalamashaka, Kaka Sungura and Khaligraph. Its moving in a good direction as there's more hope for people who are losing focus, still not there and bring some change. I admire people like Octopizzo as we need to empower guys. Getting into Philanthropy is my hope and dream.

Are you currently in school or are you working? I work with Blue Sky Adventures Team Building Group as we go rock climbing and do leadership programs. I just finished my University BA with abit of Economics. I’m a full time Beat boxer. I just turned 25 which is pure adulthood making strategic decisions. I know what is expected of me. How is it being a Christian in a secular industry? I'm a Christian. I don't drink or smoke, I want people to see me as a human being. I don't judge and don't want to be judged. I have a deep and personal relationship with God. I grew up in a Catholic family. I gave my life to Christ four years ago which changed my perception of who God is, and I was saved by grace through faith. I’m very grateful. Trump or Hilary Clinton? Trump has the small states that need to wake up. The black community is 13% in America. Obama has given opportunities but Trump will not give them opportunities to

revolt. Americans are still enslaved and ensuming. They should get engaged and build their nation. Trump will wake them up.

How would you explain the current situation of school dorms being burnt? We can’t really blame the students because they are not the ones doing it.The society is rotten and the youths need to wake up to know the way forward. How many shows do you do in a month and what should we expect from you soon? I have 'Mouthpiece' coming up where someone speaks for someone else. It is a vessel for that purpose by God. Ill pray before I do it.It will be the first ever show to be done in Africa. Practice is key. With beat boxing we view art at its point of excellence. I will feature the Quartet Orchestra Lento. It will be held at the Michael Joseph Centre on September 4th from 4pm to 6pm.Tickets are being sold at mymookh.com with Advance tickets going for 400kshs while at the gate they will go for 500kshs.There will be a live recording every month where one video will be released on social media. Buy tickets and support Kenyan Art.Mouthpiece will be done thrice a year. The Kenyan Beat box Company consists of twelve beat boxers in the group. About 4 years from now these guys will have the same level of skills. We have one from Zimbabwe, France, two from Germany and four from Uganda. I normally finance my own shows.Ive organized two beat box shows but getting sponsors has been a hurdle. I normally do 2 gigs in a month-Hip-hop Revealed Mixtape and Millionaire video. I also did Verse 5 at the Memorial Park show recently. I have a show at Arboretum with Le Band.On 21st August I’ll have Momentum with a guest from Zambia called Abel Chungu.Ill be doing a

university and church tour with Nasara the poet in Nakuru and Thika.I hope to do more shows used to run Slam Africa which will happen on 24th August.Ive done most open mics as a rapper. I’m trying to build a brand. I wouldn't mind doing Safaricom Jazz Fest. I’m looking for long term events to make an impact and change lives.

Any challenges you face as a beat boxer? Finances, I’m not so much an average person, doing three different jobs, and getting equipment. What projects are you currently working on? I have a Beat box album coming soon with beat box songs. I’m hoping to do a single and video before the year ends. I have a medley recording to be released soon, Ive done several videos per week. I brand myself every month as a beat boxer as my main target is to build networks and go mainstream. Where can we access your material or see you perform? On YouTube, Facebook as Yung Nnoiz, my mixtape is on waabeh.com, I’m in talks with Skiza.Lookout for my website as I walk with merchandise for my shows. What is your motto? Win or Learn. Any last words? Mind your all, mind your heart, be real, follow your purpose, Invest in your dreams. Believe in yourselves, die empty, and pour out everything you have. Figure what you want, invest in your time wisely. Don’t give up.
