1.1 What is space

study architecture/personal project/2013 Space forms me. It is not easy to perceive the space, while living in it-you are already accustomed to it, taking it as part of your lives. However, if you think about how the space has affected you so far, then you can feel the enormous power of its influence on you. The size, the form, and the color of the space affect the desires of the space users.

At his or her youth, people experience new events. Time after time, their circumstances become being accustomed with them. However, it is hard to recognize it and they feel their events new. This is because similar events occur in different contexts. Different contexts are called by Difference. This project shows the difference and repetition of people’s life. Tetris means the emotion of people: Anxiety, expected, comfort, suspicion, and confused. These modules combine with difference color, height, and material. People go through similar emotions through moving. It looks like maze, because life is maze.

Space makes me I think about the space. The sizes of the furniture and its layout within the space talk to me constantly, meaning that I subconsciously get stored in a certain form, which then starts to brainwash me. When I was 17, I once visited my friend’s house, whose atmosphere wasn’t very nice. It wasn’t nice simply because I applied my own standard in viewing it and compared it with my home atmosphere. Likewise, the size, the form, and the color of the space affect my desires.

1.2 The control of perception the study of perception/personal project/2013

A project for incomplete human perception. I’ve been to Paris before. In 3 years time from that, I saw the Versailles on TV, when I started to be confused with the Louvre. I’ve been to the Louvre as well, in fact, but the Louvre in my memory was only a glass pyramid. This implies that there are conscious and unconscious ways to perceive the images. The images perceived consciously get stored vividly in mind, whereas those perceived unconsciously tend to remain fragmented. However, people think they perceived them all correctly.

The test of incompleteness of memories The experiment of incompleteness of the perception was based on the structure of the human eyes. People blink periodically. If the times are switched between when their eyes are open and when closed, then the world will be seen and recognized differently. Only the instants of the world when their eyes are open will get registered and people will perceive the images selectively because of the instants

these will tend to be the desired moments and images of the users, and the rest will be distorted accordingly. An apparatus is made based on this and gets experimented at an extreme location, i.e., an image of the brothel at the jail, vice versa. The experimenters at each end perceive the images distorted from the other perspective.

Seodaemoon prison (1904-1946)

Here, independence activists and pro-democracy activities were jailed and martyred. Despite such a history of suffering, Koreans achieved independence and democracy. The Seodaemun Prison represents the history of struggle to achieve Korea’s independence and democracy with such indomitable spirit and potential.

Cheonho brothel (1980-2013)

A brothel is a place where people may come to engage in sexual activity with a prostitute,[1] sometimes referred to as a sex worker. Technically, any premises where prostitution commonly takes place qualifies as a brothel, however for legal reasons establishments may describe themselves as massage parlors, bars, strip clubs or by other description.

1.3 The real flower flower shop/exchange student/2011

Flowers are most valuable while their beauty lasts. Nowadays they are being used for enjoying material affluence. Of course there are people who want to have flowers. However, most people want flowers only on anniversaries of some kind. Just as we exchange chocolates on Valentines’ Days, the flowers are being treated as merchandise repeatedly. The real meaning of the flowers in this sense can only be appreciated when it’s not an anniversary or anything but when only the beauty of the flowers seizes the attention. Thus, in order to remind us of the purity of the flowers, this project assumes the repetitive materialistic means of the flowers as a shell or hull, with its theme being ‘to take it off in order to reveal the real flowers’. I chose the jail for its location to set up an extreme context.

2.1 What is house

The study of house/Design 1-2/2007,2013

What is house? This question is for life. A question for living itself. House is the space for personal desire; the desire is projected through the person’s memories into the space. Thus I think house is essentially a collection of the fragmented pieces of one’s memory projected and realized into reality. When people are asked what kind of houses they want to live in, they gather together in their minds, as they speak, bits and pieces from their recollection of their past. This process itself is a way to build house.

urethane foam and acrylic panel 40cmx40cm 2013

This is a study about spread in spaces. This process is very simple. The materials are composed of urethane foam, acrtlic panels, and straws. The first step is to make acrylic panels horizontally. The second step is to spread uretane foam. One spread push other spreads and these spreads fix naturally. The spreads mean people staying spaces. They react other people non-visibly. The reaction builds forms of spaces.

Importance

Talking about house, we can talk about house as a private space, a space for my living only, or as a public space, when someone else joins. When living alone, all the spaces in the house are open to me, but depending on who enters the space, the space can be closed off. We can define this as an extension of the outsiders to consider a layout of the house according to their extension. Consequently, as we take the degree of their intrusion as that of extension, we realize that the severer the degree, the space becomes hidden to such a degree that it is not easily detected even when you are inside.

A module was repeated to create a plane, which then creates a space. A module implies various functions: providing the necessary information on screen or protecting the space from the light through its transparent envelope. The users can move themselves to sit on the module through the flexibility of its material. A bus stop with this kind of theme was produced in a series of process that begins with the image of a tree going forward and ends with a final output model as the last hand of its correlation.

2.3 What are stairs stairs project/personal project/2013

stairs are a big element in the space. Its dynamic effect adds quality to the space, whereas the floor or the wall can be a bit boring. However, when a stair is taken as a matter of formality, it becomes nonetheless boring. A stair shouldn’t let its users feel they have to conquer it through the repetitive means. This project exemplifies its diversity-it can be a ramp or just a plane, depending on the perspective.

Repetition and Tedium

When I went up and down the stairs, I felt tedium, because of the repetitive structure of the stairs.

Stairs made of concrete or stone used to repel me. However, it was fun to walk up the stairs made of sparkling materials. It is due to the characteristics and the forms of the material that compose the stair. This project exhibits the stair experiences as installation art. The silver beads hanging on the fishing rod symbolize the steps of the stair, whose plane gets flown by the wind to form the images that will be perceived as ramps or grounds from another point of view. stairs

This project experiments on the real stair with its data drawn from the tasks described above. People perceive only the facing planes as high, as they walk up the stair, thus feeling challenged until they see the destination. Therefore, by looking right below the eye level facing the final destination, one can reduce the pressure. So I experimented using the apparatus and was able to draw the conclusion as such.

Users can see the bottom and top of the stairs only by the tool.

Users are able to feel moving stairs comfortable. This is because they can see the top of the stairs continuously.

Optical illusion

The tool controls the sight of users and they can move through stairs more confortable.

mem·ory [|memeri] [NOUN][oft poss N] Your memory is your ability to remember things. [NOUN][usu with supp, oft N of n] A memory is something that you remember from the past. [NOUN] A computer’s memory is the part of the computer where information is stored, especially for a short time before it is transferred to disks or magnetic tapes. [NOUN][usu with poss, also in N of n] If you talk about the memory of someone who has died, especially someone who was loved or respected, you are referring to the thoughts, actions, and ceremonies by which they are remembered.

3.1 The distance among individual memories the study of individual memories in a certain place/Thesis project/2012 There are two kinds of memories about a particular place. Public memories. Memories anybody can share. The rest are personal. These are made individually by their own characteristics and can’t be shared by all. But personal memories impress more. Thus when one recalls a space, one recalls first the stored images of the personal memories. Those memories are the same in their importance, based on which within the same distance this project peels one’s memories like a dead skin.

Assembling of memories traditional Korean paper, installation 8mx3mx3m 2012

Individual memory When one recalls the memories of a space, one recalls its images, which have the buildings and landscapes as backgrounds. These backgrounds don’t come up vividly but vaguely. They are all important to each person but when gathered together, their relative importance disappears. They form one large shape. This project showcased a concept at an architectural exhibition for the projects designed with the Voronoi diagram.

3.2 building new memories on the memories Art center in Gyeongchun Line/Thesis project/2012

This project connects architecturally and incorporates the theme described above. A personal memory was assumed as a dot and incorporated into a new architecture, with the help of the Voronoi diagram. The memories of the particular spaces as a collection of the dots create another new collection of memories-the theme of this project. The new memories get created over the memories.

This abandoned railroad site is historical place to Korean. This is because many Korean enjoyed travel from Seoul to Chuncheon by the train. Their common memory is about context, from city to nature. The train get out of Seoul, leaving for natural.

EXTRACT POINTS FROM : from the location use points from individual memories. This is because we thought that the memories contain ideal programs for galleries. It’s very simpl and rationable method.

COLLECT POINTS FROM : from individual memories needed several data as we wanted to make more persuable. Therefore, using previous way, collect a lot of individual memories as possible.

Two long cubes are located according to railroad. This is because the meaning of railroad is important.

Change function of the other, because one building has advantage to access, while the other has no.

SET POINTS FROM DATA :

manupulate points to function had to fit space for our purpose. For this reason, manupulated dots with specific rules. This is attributed to the fact that if without rules, meaning of data is no useful.

FIX SHAPE FROM CONCEPT : determine fianal shape Finally, can create terminal 3-D models through previous phases. This process is very simple, but we have to make much effort due to asthetic view.

Adapt voronoi pattern to buildings. By this process, you can express your initial intention.

Dertermine final model by making the models more dramatically. Erase pieces through intuition.

The shapes created by the Voronoi diagram have two advantages: one, eliminating the standardized division and the existing floor concept, creating a new way of height division; two, this space is for diverse art creation or for its exhibition, which can inspire the artists. The new space form provides its users with the diverse images of the buildings.

3.3 Chaos & Cosmos the study of voronoi/group project/2013 my role : installation, engineering

I was impressed by the book ‘Cosmos’ by Carl Saigon. His ideas on the cosmos and on the chaos influenced me with a penetrating force. People think of order and disorder as if they are two different things. This can become a standard and lead them into fallacies. Order and disorder are not to be separated but to coexist within their own order. This theme is incorporated into the space of nature and landfill, shown as order vs. disorder, to speak of the core of the project, with the help of the Voronoi diagram.

Order is determined by relationships. It means that every relationships has invisible lines and balance to each other. The diagrams above is about the increase of entrophy according to the increase of size of structure. Through thses, you can know that the increase of entrophy does not means increase of chaos because there are lines between two modules.

Cosmos is order, chaos is order

objects in nature have regular structures. Specifically, structure of water is very so elaborate, sustaining their elaborated structure in moving.

This condition is about the increase of entrophy of building. Many fragments of the structure elements look like chaotic, but this condition is stable because there is no any movement of the fragments.

Process of the project. 1. cutting wood panels into slice. 2. attaching white paper to the slices. 3. assembling the slices by using hinge. 4. connecting Voronoi modules. 5. installing the modules in the valley.
