“ Perhaps the big project of the nonhuman turn is to find new techniques, in speech and art and mood, to disclose the particioation of nonhuman in “our”world.” Richard Grusin “The Nonhuman Turn”
This project is about synthetic landscape design, including a ventilation tower, infrastructure, and new type of park. The main issue in the design was the material, which could not be fake and had to be organic. So, we found the material, bedrock, in Manhattan, and then, I designed a very futuristic and ambiguous synthetic landscape. This design makes people broaden their perspective of architectural design.

This studio will design a new entrance zone into the Battery Tunnel on the Manhattan side of New York City. The project will be comprised of a ventilation tower, an office building, a “recreational” space, and the tunnel entrance itself. In accordance to the conceptual framework, we will treat these elements not within individual categories but rather as vital components of a single hybrid object. A number of strange categorical blends will be examined and then used to formulate the new proposals. The coming together of all these disparate elements at the entry of the tunnel provides an ideal testing ground for an architecture,
which seeks to unveil, express, and formalize agencies and aesthetics of things that make up our built environment without falling back into preconceived notions of value, beauty, or usefulness. The “Respiratory Object” will register qualities that often go unnoticed or are deliberately hidden because they are deemed unfamiliar and thus undesirable. But it is precisely in these qualities where we will attempt to locate a new departure point for design, which can tolerate the “strange”, and incorporate it as an active and relevant participant in the design process.

This image is the landscape on park. The design motif comes from the method of the excavator wheel machine. That machine is rotated on an axis, so a circular shape is made. And then, the polishing machine moves in order to make the pathway. This work process is automated. There is no human interruption. Pedestrians walking through on the side road can see the moving polishing machine above their heads.

The reason for showing this pipe configuration is to show how to work the ventilation tower. The biggest image is the 3D section image. That image is showing the synthetic idea and the relationships among the existing places, the bedrock, and the synthetic building.

The street view in Manhattan is more unique than the one in other cities, but the buildings are not unique in the city. As for working on this project, we would like to give people a very strange experience. This concept is connected with the circulation idea – how to attract people walking on the pathway into the park.
For this reason, the concrete retaining wall is a boundary between the new park and adjacent buildings, so people cannot see the park from the road, but they may be curious about what is beyond the retaining wall because a very big automated machine is moving above their heads. Finally, people will go inside, and they will experience a very strange view.

02 Post-anthropocentric Logistics Center : Hyperloop one and Amazon center PennDesign Spring Semester 2017 Instructor: Robert-Stuart-Smith Location: Nevada, United States Program: Automated Factory, Hyperloop, Airship Software: Rhino, Maya, Keyshot Team Project
This project started from the question that what is the building for autonomous machines. Based on research of Amazon Fulfilment Center, it was possible to extract basic concept of the project. First is optimal height of the machines. Normal buildings are organized according to the human scale, yet this project is done by each machine’s size. Furthermore, it became the thinking of developing vertical circulation of overall factory, which made the process system more efficient; existing Amazon Fulfilment Center has largely three process- receiving materials, organizing, and packaging. Second is creating proper circulation for post-anthropocentric building. In this project, there are two types of circulation. One is for machines; visible yet not accessible for humans. 18
The other is for humans; minimum space for needs. To organize this system, human circulation takes only small portion of slightly lower level of the center. This human circulation does not harm main grid system of machine circulation, so machines make flexible grid system using QR Code to work productively. Third is proper shape of the building. The form and shape of this building is created by its own programs. Process and mechanism of Amazon Fulfilment Center is respected; in order to put huge horizontal space in relatively smaller space in the center of a city, vertical spaces are created; and overall phase of factory made collection of box shapes at the beginning and created streamlined volume at the hyperloop station part. Post-anthropocentric Logistics Center

Drone This drone delivery system is related to Amazon Prime Air. In the future, small size of packages are delivered by drones, not human. For this reason, there have to be opening for drones. These drones can be entered into Amazon Fulfillment Center.
Amazon Fulfillment Center Amazon’s operations now involve material supply, distribution, and point of sale being undertaken with minimal human intervention. Amazon’s ecosystem has few anthropocentric concern, yet it perceives an economic opportunity in offering rapid human transport services as a bi-product to it’s manufacturing and sales operation.
Set of objects The term “Internet of Things” describes how since 2008, communication between thing exceeds communications involving people. By 2020 there will be 50 Billion things connected to the internet. Physical domains are increasingly concerned with the interaction of ‘things’ above the interactions of people. The technological shift has enabled industry to transform into what is commonly referred to as “industry 4.0”. Manufacturing has incorporated digital communications, robotic fabrication, and artificial intelligence, to become a highly interconnected semi-autonomous enterprise. Prior to Industry 4.0, it was more economical for companies to consolidate manufacturing within large remote factories where there was access to cheap labour. Industry 4.0 technologies are re-situated close to pointes of sale, rely on minimal human intervention, and aim for near-zero time-scales between purchase and delivery. The infrastructure that supports this is increasingly urban, yet decreasingly human.

Amazon Prime Air Amazon is serious about drone deliveries. We’ve known that for a long time and its latest Clarkson-infused unveil has only further highlighted the seripus nature with which the retailer is pursuing aerial shipping. It’s still some way off though. While the technology might be there, the regulations aren’t. If Amazon’s drones are going to fly out of line of sight (more than 10 miles), regulations need to change first - and this won’t be a speedy process. What’s more, Amazon itself has put a damper on those expecting flying packages come January . The firm caveated its big unveil by stating it “will not launch Prime Air until we are able to demonstrate safe operations”.
Hyperloop Station This hyperloop station is for both of human and package from amazon. This system is common in other train stations. However, the difference from other stations is for mainly package from amazon. This is because this building is not anthropocentric. Also, this building is located in desert, Nevada. The interior operation system is showed on next drawing page.
Hyperloop tube For Amazon
Hyperloop tube For human
Hyperloop Elon Musk’s Hyperloop technology is generating a lot of commercial interests; architectural firm BIG are already commissioned for a Dubai Abu Dhabi Hyperloop preoject while Hyperloop Transportation Technologies is developing an alternative version of the technology for a Bdapest-Bratislava-Vienna line. The hyperloop is a high-speed train system that utilises vacuum tubes, and offers inter-city travel at speeds competitive with air flight. Similar to regular railway stations, hyperloop terminals are able to be placed in city centres, and therefore their design must engage with a complex urban and architectural set of problems.

Firstly, some of them don’t need a studio with a kitchen because they spend so much time at their schools or workplaces. But most of the studios in Philadelphia have kitchens. For this reason, I could get the smallest room without a kitchen, for a studio at less expense. On the other hand, people who want to have a kitchen in their room can choose to share a kitchen with others. This can be economical for them because most of them have irregular life patterns, so they have different meal times. Secondly, this building is targeting people who want to collaborate with others and share their workplace with others. Also, this building offers a gallery and multi-purpose hall in the same building. Microhousing projects are booming in America, especially on the eastern side. This is behouse by themselves.

Microhousing projects are booming in America, especially on the eastern side. This is because so many people prefer to live alone and because it is difficult for young people to buy a house by themselves. For this reason, they are searching for the smallest houses with the least financial burden. In Philadelphia, there are many people who study art and have jobs related to the art industry. They usually are in a class with low income. Although their schools or workplaces are located in the inner city, they prefer to live outside of the city because of the living expenses. Noting this point, I have a good idea for gathering them into the inner city.

Mass Study (Concept Study)
Mass study and uban fabric are started from the figure of road system in US. Most of cities in US have similar the road system. the system is organized by orthogonal shape, which does not have any vertical hierachy, but have equal sequence like network. I applied this idea to this project, because this microhouse is small city. Based on this concept, I did 2studies. The first study is program study which make modules having small function.
30
And then, I studied how to configurate the modules through urban fabric. The first step of urban fabic starts from 2d plane, and then, erected the plane. The last step is mass study. This is important step because this building is for artists who think of natural environment as important. So, the mass study is divided into 3 step. The first one is where is public or private space. The second step is the direction of sunlight. The last one is putting small units into the grid.

This project connects architecturally and incorporates the theme described above. A personal memory was assumed as a dot and incorporated into a new architecture, with the help of the Voronoi diagram. The memories of the particular spaces as a collection of the dots create another new collection of memories-the theme of this project. The new memories get created over the memories.

EXTRACT POINTS FROM: _from the location Use points from individual memories. This is because we thought that the memory contain ideal programs for galleries. It’s very simple and rationable method.
COLLECT POINTS FROM: _from individual memory Needed several data as we wanted to make more persuable. Therefore, using previous way, collect a lot of individual memory as possible
SET POINTS FROM DATA: _manupulate points to function Had to fit space for our purpose. For this reason, manupulated dots with specific rules. This is attributed to the fact that if without rules, meaning of data is no useful.
USE PHINO PROGRAM: _employ grasshopper plug-in In order to complete voronoi pattern, we need algorithm. Thankfully, there is already program which makes Voronoi pattern. It’s grasshopper. Algorithm presents.
FIX SHAPE FROM CONCEPT: _determine final shape Finally, can create terminal 3D model through previous phases. This process is very simple, but we have to make much effort due to aesthetic view.
Two long cubes are located according ro railroad. This is because the meaning of railroad is important.
Change function of the other, because one building has advantage to access, while the other has no.
Apply concept to one building and in order to show concept more clearly, mend the size of the other.
Adapt voronoi pattern to buildings. By this process, you can express your initial intention.
Determine final model by making the models more dramatically. Erase pieces through intuition.

The goal of this project is to make an innovative auction house and signature building in New York City. The auction hall has the characteristic of changing programs according to circulation in contrast to conventional buildings. People can experience innovative spaces and broaden their ideas of architecture. This project starts with analyzing urban contexts and natural transformation systems. The main thesis is bifurcating programs. This idea is reflected by changing programs horizontally.

This section and the section detail drawing are to show how materials are applied. One of the important things in terms of structure is using a steel frame and a solid concrete wall. Also, installation of the exterior panel and interior panel is important. This is because the exterior panel is GRG, which is a concrete material. In order to achieve seams and curves in the exterior panel, I had to use GRG. Corian is the main material in the interior space, because Corian is good for expressing natural curvature in surfaces and the gloss of interior space. You can check the explanation of materials in the 3D detail.

This project is the renewal of the facade in the Hyundai Car Service Center. The time period was just two weeks, so I worked on 3D digital modeling, rendering, and section detail drawing at the same time with Byung-Soo Cho. As a result, I learned how to draw section detail drawings.
