Community skill centre Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia A community skill centre that provides a chance for the elders to continue passing on the locality and heritage into the new era in order to prevent them getting forgotten. This community skill centre also aims to bring in both generations together to create a collision of interactions and memories. The centre can also lessen the gap between the generations by passing on the distinct and unique local skillsets that makes Kajang the town it is and in hope for the next few generations to continue the effort.

chow kit tunes

project location design concept

Community music centre Chow Kit, Selangor, Malaysia “Thumps of drums and plucks of strings, modulating synthesizers and singsong of vocalists, tunes and rhythms that truly enthuse all. The universality of musical composition provokes curiosity, dictates the mind and breaking the routine creating peaks on the flat routine loop. The peaks infuse dynamic and expressive impact that ripples through Chow Kit, attracting whilst dispersing innovation with expressions, pulling the left-behinds forward together with the locals as the harmonic instruments orchestrates Chow Kit into the musical future.” Chow Kit presents traces of past and present musical experiences such as the abandoned theatre complexes, open air concert by the late Sudirman, NGOs (such as ANGSANAcare by Yayasan Chow Kit) that provide musical therapies for the locals, tunes of local jamming sessions under the bus stops as well as the abandoned music shops located around the site. The appearance of the abandoned local premises that due to their non-strategic locations, creates a capitalist incarnation of malls that houses the maximum convenience of essential retailings and a competitive financial survivalist environment. This phenomena results in a dissolve of the local unification which has negative impacts on the social environment. This community music centre is a promotion and appreciation of musical opportunities such as by harvesting talents from both homeless and stable locals by introducing recording studios and music based classes. This project also bridges the gap between the different characters through the charms of sonorous melodies, providing spaces that amplify the experience beyond with public amphitheatre, stage, experiential spaces, and interactive audio introductory area. Besides teaching and harvesting, this music centre also aims to clean out the negative stain that

why music?

MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF MANKIND -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, poet

“It exists in every society (both with and without words), varies more within than between societies, regularly supports certain types of behaviour, and has acoustic features that are systematically related to the goals and responses of singers and listeners. - Universality and Diversity in Human Song, Harvard University

Chow kit road! chow kit road! meaning repeating the importance of “jalan chow kit”

People are everywhere in the middle of the city From all races old or young Some riding cars and some just walked Some just hanging out ha ha ha ha ha ha

In the middle of the city The poor and the wealthy Is like a family filled with joy Lot of people selling almost anything Everything’s cheap ha ha ha ha ha ha

Temporary shelter Lakeside at Taylor’s University Inspired by the surroundings, the shelter is designed to be a fully functional shelter for the needy with daily activities in mind such as sleeping, working, storage, interacting with nature and at the same time sustainable. The shelter also prioritise the anthropometry of human movements and interactions with the shelter, making the relationship between the user and the shelter more flexible and easily operable.
