TEDxTainan 2016 Annua l E v e n t About TED Talks A platform devoted to spreading ideas for thought and action leaders, who are the creative, innovative and the go-to people from every field of expertise.

To share one single idea per person in 18 minutes, that fulfill three values to audiences, 1. touches our heart 2. teaches us something new 3. easy to recall

To inspire action and fundamentally understanding of a topic.

2

V ision of TEDxTainan

When we localized the event in Tainan, we have two visions. It is to encourage the TED’s spirit in Tainan, and to fulfill the need of expanding the idea’s framework in this cherished town.

The mission of TEDxTainan is to open up the

framework of ideas in Tainan. In this year’s annual event, we ought to explain the phenomenon in Taiwan through global conception. What values Taiwan had, that the global conceptualized it as something important.

3

We gather those who has valuable ideas and is working on the action that has a vision which is able to foresee the nature of the issues. Society’s issues foreseeing, as to predict, and to act. Last but not least, is to encourage the city to engage in more social activity.

As we try to bring more thoughts into Tainan, we never forgot to appreciate the uniqueness of this city. We want to show the world the efforts of Tainan in social engagement as well. Through TEDxTainan’s annual event, we encourage to city to achieve whatever the city wanted to achieve. 4

Curatorial Concept

0 to 1, is all about thinking of the best way to reform a better future. The name “zero to one”

inspired by the book of startup investor Peter Thiel and how he see the world. One of the best in the book is he refer America as “optimistic yet indefinite country” . The indefinite optimist is bullish on the future but lacks any design and plan for how to make such a future possible.

Yet, we look back to all the things that happened to Taiwan in the last few years, the stag-

nant of Taiwan’s startup, the relationship between government, corperates and residents, the strong voices of the residents that was unable to be heard of, etc. We all feel stucked and not moving forward for a long times.

5

When one had too many choices, but we don’t know how to choose which one is the best

for us, that is indefinite optimist. When we look to the future, sometimes, we are puzzled by the many choices given to us. So it is very important to reason those choices based on the first basis from which a thing is known. Action based on the first principle thought is the key to the better future. By more discussion, people tend to know that when to be more dogmatism and when to be more nihilism.

The theme “nothing to everything”, which encourage us to overcome the inertial thinking

which puzzled us a lot when it comes to discuss and speculate social issues. With first principles, we boiled things down to the starting point, which meant the fundamental truth, and then we reason up from there before we begin to act out of it in order to make Taiwan a better place in the future.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, commited citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

In terms of reshaping the society’s value,

we decided to discuss the values stages-to-stages. While we dig deep into a stage, we find the stagnantion point in each stage, and talk about it.

Career

The character of Taiwan, and the problem we met while reforming it Taiwan had a long history of OEM. Today, we want our own products to find a place in global market. So, the government promote “startup” so much, that kind of raised another problem, of which Taiwan doesn’t seems to be lacking of ideas. In fact, we had too much ideas that it seems we are ignoring the problems that rose from the status quo. We don’t seems to understand the nature of future development and long-term planning. Taiwan industry is in one very urgent situation. The past few years we see the Taiwan government launched a number of industrial upgrading program, any subsidy program that promotes the transformation of a traditional industry, promoting cultural, entrepreneurial industries , innovation , entrepreneurship and advocating enterprises to have their own brand, Updating the service design, enhance the brand value seems to be a good thing. And also the recent Asia Silicon Valley program, this seemingly friendly entrepreneurial environment. Why we still can’t seems to be cultivating a global international brand and emergence of multinational companies? In order to drive the industry breakthrough while increasing the ability of Taiwan industry to compete amongst the world, we have to get rid of the old and tradition thought that slow us down, and talk about every problems we are facing now, instead of running away from the facts.

“ In Taiwan, we always have the ability to produce a good work. But we don’t always work

strategically to establish a good business model to make it sustainable. The only way to prevent “good product, bad company” from happening, is to establish your own way to survive in the market.

11

Subt opic 2 :

Society

The voice of social discussion, and how do we improve the efficiency of it Social participation, is a way to provide spontaneous response to contemporary problems. The large volume of public opinion in Taiwan is a phenomenon that we can not ignore. Our participation in the discussion of a social topic is one of the important steps to establish the society self-identity. For the future forms of social discussion, we expect to create a society with higher tolerance towards a more controversial issues, which at the same time, promote critical thinking on the discussion. We expect to encourage more citizens to shape their imaginary future social patterns by their own actions. In today’s society, the obstruction of public voice to reach the executive unit is the lack of functionable bridges and platforms. Eventually, the quality of social discussion and the depth of topic we are discussing, is the key factors of how a society is known to everybody.

Humanity

The dark side of Capitalism, and how it affected our choice of life We believe that the capitalism era had left behind many social symptoms. To inspect them, first we have to start inspecting from the social concept that we all have in our life. Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and affirms their ability to improve their lives through the use of reason and ingenuity as opposed to submitting blindly to tradition and authority or sinking into cruelty and brutality. Is it possible for us to think in the most fundamental “human nature of mankind for the recent horrific events in the International and Taiwan society. To rethink the values, to build social empathy and to get rid of social indifference. These are the path we should be taking to build a better future. The pluralistic development of humanistic values is inseparable from education. We can enhance the quality of humanities and ideology, through education. Yet, most of the times we had our education in many different ways, not only in the classroom, but in the communication amongst people. To share value of life together through different stories, is the best way of inspecting our life.

17

Jason Liu - Freelance journalist A

“ We wasted a lot of times tagging people on the social media, which provide us a fil-

tered part of the society. Can we stop trying to be a keyboard warrior, hiding in our comfort zone and vocally abused those who we don’t even know.

The Han privilege is invisible yet the common experience by non-Han people under the same social, political, or economic circumstances is different. By respecting the history of this land, we should start respecting the difference in cultures between us.

Despite all the installation that do not have any connection to the culture of the place at all, such as Chiayi Diamond Shoes, is experiencing a strong resistance by the citizens in Chiayi. How do an art, connect with the culture, is a very important aspect that determine the value of the art piece and our culture.

people who dislike cocktails

like Bartenders people who love cocktails, eager to attempt, but don’t have the chance to try it.

We chose to target those people who is in the middle of the analysis. These group of people are experienced in drinking. If given a chance, they will love to try to craft simple cocktails at home. They love the idea of not having to go out often just to have a drink. Sometimes, serving ourselves a glass of cocktail while relaxing is a better option. 54

B R ANDI NG

Although Cocky means arrogancy in word, but it also had a different perspective of facing our life in a fearless way. As we said, sometimes, we are limited by those mundane viewpoints. When we want to do something, we always afraid of how people look at us. As like crafting cocktails, we always thought if we don’t have the skill of a bartender, we are prohibited to do the same thing. It is not. Of course, bartenders deserve respect in every ways as they put their mind and heart in mastering it. But as we who love cocktails, we shouldn’t be stopped to try crafting a taste of our own as well. Everyone deserved a taste of their own. As Cocky represent, we are not professional bartenders, we don’t serve cocktails, we serve the cocktails’ lovers.

Insight and Attempt ACTION OF INVOLUNTARY Involuntary means an action done without will or conscious control. Such as, everybody wears their bathroom shoes to go to the bathroom, which exactly is the best moment to implement a fall detection system.

CHOICE OF THE ELDERLY SLIPPERS There are several factors to determine if a slippers is suitable for the elderly, such as the ability to keep warmth, the flatness of insoles, the size of the vamp, the size of the entire shoes and the tightness of it.

FOOT CONDITION OF THE ELDERLY The foot of the elderly is easily out of shape, which lead to the reduction of foot joint stability, balance disorders and gait instability. Foot disease such as spurred, synovitis, follicular swelling and toenail deformity is happened frequently as well.

Elderly’s bathroom experience

Research

There are four common cases of how elderly fell in bathroom a) Suddenly feel uncomfortable, fainted afterward b) Slip on the floor in front of the sink c) Stumble across some stuff in bathroom such as mats or their legs d) Feeling dizzyness after trying to stand up after sitting on toilet for a long times

There are five ways of falling down a) Fell over with stomach facing down

d) Fell down with butts facing down first

b) Fell down with back facing down

e) Fell down with knee facing down first

c) Fell with left/right side of body facing down

64

Scenario A c t i o n A n a l y si s We have tested out several position of how a patient would fall, and the angle of their foot. And we finally break it down to 3 positions of falling down which is most frequent for elderly.

Bre a k d o wn As shown in the figure below, there are 3 directions of fall and each of them is tested out the optimal angle of the foot is after the fell.

65

Idea Sketch

66

Detection System

It is a part of experiment to test out how gyroscope functioning as an alarm worn on foot. It is triggered by a contact sensor to know if there is somebody wearing it. Then, the gyroscope would detect the angle worn by elderly. If it show an unusual angle, the alarm is triggered to inform the person responsible to care for the elderly. This is still in experiment progress, as precise angle is needed to recorded while elderly wearing the shoes is doing all kind of actions.

WEBSITE Cocky Innovative Liquor TEDxTainan

80

Pre-launch website is to gather potential customers’ information. To achieve it, we need to raise their curiosity as much as we can. So to do that, we mosaic our product, and designing the background and alcohol color to be swifting as the mouse move.

81

In our product landing page, we consider these few points. How do we get users to our site from scalable channels, how do we design our website’s first experience to be pleasant, how do we get our users to promote our product to their friends, and how do we direct them to kickstarter to fund our products. 82

FORM DESIGN

HASSELBLAD x VIOLIN CASE A redesign of an iconic form

86

AN I NT R ODU C T I O N TO H A SSE L B L A D Since the beginning Hasselblad cameras were born from a love for photography and the desire of a man to give photographers the technical excellence needed to realise their creative vision. That man was Victor Hasselblad. For seventy five years now, Hasselblad has been devoted to a very simple task: to produce the finest camera equipment known to man. And for over seventy years, they have succeeded in doing just that. In making the tools that will enable us to live up to the Hasselblad brand proposition, “Create To Inspire.

The most iconic model Hasselblad 503cw

87

The product line of hasselblad is separated into 4 timezones, which is the surveillance camera at World War II, v-system the iconic civilian used camera, h-system the modern hasselblad and the x-system the mirrorless. The current hasselblad is focusing on h-system and x-system.

Hasselblad camera always manage to ensure quality. The photos it captured provides a tremendous amount of details and richfulness. Most of the hasselblad is used to capture portraits because medium format camera provides top quality image but has a slower shutter settings.

VINTAGE ISN’T DEAD Most of the iconic form design comes from the past. It proves us one thing, sometimes, less isn’t more, sometimes less is bored. The greatest lesson i’ve learnt while designing by Hasselblad’s design code, is that the details of the craftmanship fits so well with the form. While using a simple cube form, every edge of it is covered by silver metal which is so exaggerate but exquisite. Just like the form of Harley Davidson, the exposed of a little mechanical from the inside is where all the beauty comes from. Every vintage design has a common, no matter it is fashion or product, that they are not afraid to show the best of them to u, which in Hasselblad case, is the delicate cube and the mechanical inside can capture the best photo in the world.

ALIGN

STATICNESS BY SIMPLEST FORM

100

THE U R G E O F PER F ECT I O N Align is a minimalist table lamp, structured by the simplest form, a line, to create an urge to try “aligning” the lamp part and lamp base. Lamp base is made of copper while lamp part is made of dark color wood.

The lamp is to tested out “the urge of perfection” in human psychology, which is a mild symptoms of OCD. When two lines connected to each other in a overlapping, parallel and perpendicular way, we feel much better and comfortable. Because it fits how we like to percept things in a way we are used to.

101

The connection of bold lines create mild shine that sips through the tiny gap of wood. Soften the environment which shines from within.

102

103

First I use this 2 prototypes to find how how much light I need to lit up the desk. The structure is 55cm in length due to the 50cm LED in the market which is unchangeable. The first prototype is enclosed with a door at 1cm each, the second prototype is fully opened. The end result is second prototype is better due to the strength of the LED.

Next I ought to find out the proper height of the lamp as it is designed to be unaltherable. Result is 50-55cm as matching with the angles designed in solidwork.

105

Material brings out the charm of your product. In this product, there is a very important feeling I want to express. In modern world, the form we tried to adapt had become simpler and simpler. Unlike in the old times, we all wanted a complicated beast like Harley Davidson’s bike. But does “simple” always means “bore”? Or can we play with small details in simple form such as a simple twist of an angle, a pattern of bump in a surface, or even how two different materials can be combined together in a creative way. I believe all these things makes up the future’s trend of form design.

I have chosen two main material for my product, that is copper to brings out the feeling of warmth(color) and steadiness(material), and lauan plywood that had been processed into darker color and smooth surface to brings out the feeling of solidity.

106

This project had only 1 purpose, to find out a “NEW FORM for table lamp, so the users will love it once again. Like Alessi Juicer, I am not designing a new cultures about how to use lamp in an efficient way or things like that.

When designing it, I only ask myself a question. How do a traditional lamp worked the way it should be and still give us a feeling of stylistic and a different perspective of visual sense.

FLOW

MOVEMENT IS FASCINATING

112

113

TO G O W IT H THE F L O W Flow is a simple clock, designed to appreciate the moment staring at the gently flowing tips of the time. In this age, people forgot how to enjoy life. Sometimes, just stop and stare. No matter how stress the life is, how huge the wound is, time do heal.

So, let’s give time some time.

114

SK ET CH Wabi sabi requires a lot of imagination to create something people are not expecting at all.

115

116

Prototype of this project has 3 aims 1) To find out how high it should be “floating” in order to let people concentrate on only the surface of the clock 2) How thick should be for the needle to remain stealth 3) How wide is the circle, to catch attention yet doesn’t feel exaggerated

Round is chosen as most part of the product is because edge is known to be distracting, which I don’t want that to happen. I want the focus to stay on the movement.

117

THE ART OF WABI SABI Wabi-sabi is a concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics constituting a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. In short, sometimes we found our attention stay longer in the imperfection details or moments than the perfect one. I tried to apply the same concept on my clock. Because I want people to find themselves lost in the intentionally imperfection details while the time passed by, slowly, quietly. Thus I wanted to find out how to crack open the surface of the clock, will provides the best effect I wanted. In the end, I have chosen the second one. Because the crack located at 2/3 of the clock which is very unconventional and attention seeking.

119

Shiny aluminium and teak wood is the material chosen in this product. The visual difference in these two materials, which give feeling of dull roughness and shiny smoothness at the same time is mesmerizing to watch. They give each other contrast to make them stand out together.

In teak wood, I’ve decided to make it looks like dark colour and light colour wood join in the middle to create more contrast. With the dark and light colour and the intentional gap between the wood, people tend to look longer in the details I’ve put up together.

120

121

To be honest, this clock seems weird in every ways. But it tends to catch your attention, as you watch the dull black needle move along the light surface, and then move past the crack, then it kinda shades into the black area, and it comes out again. Sometimes, it feels just magical.
