Work Sample #004 Neo Urban Studio Architectural Thesis Birmingham, AL 2018 Published in Margaret Fletcher’s Visual Communication for Architects and Designers, 2020 Neo Urban Studio is my final undergraduate architectural project, completed during the Auburn University Urban Studio program I was accepted into for my thesis year. The Urban Studio takes 15 students from the university campus to Birmingham, to study urban design as it applies to the rich history of the largest city in Alabama. The project anchors a street corner of a newly revitalized area of a previously blighted downtown district. A newly developed public park and public transportation hub sits adjacent, attracting populous of all socioeconomic classes. The concept of the building is to integrate the public realm into the built environment by hollowing out a series of unconditioned spaces and eliminating building threshold. The first floor is entirely public. While businesses exist on this floor, such as a restaurant/bar and cafÊ, the interstitial areas between programs are populated with furniture, rotating gallery walls, and other amenities. Without the barrier of threshold, the building extends the sidewalk into its campus. Overhead light wells enhance the interior, and guide the public through it.

Work Sample #005 Vivid Walls AU Project WOOF Design Competition Entry Auburn, AL 2015 Selected as a Finalist Project WOOF is a West Coast non-profit organization that aims to improve the reputation and practices of dog adoption centers nationwide. Our undergraduate class was tasked with actualizing their manifesto architecturally. The top ten projects were selected to present to a design jury comprised of designers, professors, and a representative of Project WOOF. My submission, Vivid Walls, incorporates rehabilitation, friendlier residence, and adoption facility programs. The building presents the programs in a powerfully colorful gesture aimed at consumers to represent the joyous feeling of giving a needy animal a better life. Five colored monolithic concrete walls separate the building into two major masses and frame a courtyard in between. The masses are separated and grouped according to public and private programs, with the mass facing southward containing the public spaces. Each wall is painted a different color to convey senses of enchantment and welcoming positivity. The walls are three feet in width, and the interior spaces celebrate the thresholds that they offer.

Precedent study of color and walls of Luis Barragán House
By studying the architecture of famous Mexican architect Luis Barragán, his use of color and his monolithic walls as a means to frame space began to resonate with the ideas put forth by Project WOOF. Barragán’s house creates a powerful sense of wonder from the scaleless walls and vibrant colors on both the interior and exterior. It is almost is as if a visitor
into his home was in a dream. These abstract ideas compliment the client manifesto. When the walls intersect, their color and hierarchical relationships are highlighted. Colors of adjacent walls alternate between complimentary and analogous. In addition, the walls act as a sort of way finding in the building, and programs housed within them compliment the
colors in their interior design. The walls frame long corridors and axes within the building, as well as radically simplify the floor plan. By simply seeing the placement of the five walls, visitors already understand the building they are about to enter, contrasting the familiar with the extraordinary.
