CHARLESTON FORGE

When forging by hand, steel is first cut to the correct size and then heated in a forge until red hot. Once it has reached about 1,000 to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, it is malleable enough to be shaped by the blacksmith. In some cases this means bending it around a jig to make a chair leg. In other cases it is tapering and texturing a piece of steel to become a table leg. Different designs require different processes but the craftsmanship and precise attention to detail never changes no matter what the process.
