Seven year journey
Year 7 I found the visit to my Primary School very helpful as I learned what Warlingham would be like and about all the clubs here. The Induction Days helped me get to know people and I’ve made lots of new friends since starting at Warlingham! Ollie
Year 10
At Warlingham, we support our students on a seven year journey, during which they discover their talents and develop useful life skills as well as gain the qualifications they need for their next steps.
For my first work experience placement, I got to experience the working life of the mortgage team at an Estate Agency based in London; for my second I was placed in a local Architect’s, which is my career aspiration, so it was a great opportunity for me to see what it would involve.

At the Year 9 Options Evening, I discovered there were a lot of choices for me to pick from. The teachers explained what I would learn in each subject. I chose History, Spanish and Health & Social Care because I enjoy these subjects and think they will be useful.
Realising potential
Year 8 During Activities Week, I went on the Year 8 trip to Paris. It was my first residential trip with Warlingham and I was so excited to be going to Paris! I really enjoyed exploring new places with my friends and seeing all the sights. We also got to visit Disneyland!

I’m taking A Levels in Law, Sociology and Spanish and want to study Forensic Psychology at University. Sharntae Former student I joined Warlingham in Year 7. My parents chose it because of its educational record and reputation. I decided to stay on for my A Levels because I felt it had a strong sense of community. Studying Politics and the visit to the Houses of Parliament, helped me decide what degree I should do. Sally Sally graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London with a First Class Honours degree in Politics and International Relations and is now working in the Civil Service.

I chose to stay on at Warlingham because it’s very close to where I live and I like the teachers. In addition, some colleges did not offer the courses I wanted to take. Since being here, I’ve felt supported to get good results. James

Courage We are up for a challenge. We see mistakes as opportunities to learn. We are keen to improve. Commitment We keep going, even when things are hard. We plan and anticipate. We are capable of managing distractions. Kindness We think of others’ feelings before we act. We celebrate our differences and treat people as equals. We contribute.
The Warlingham Learner
Developing outstanding lifelong learners Our key values are: Courage, Commitment and Kindness. The Warlingham Learner, which centres on and develops these values, is the means by which we articulate and develop the skills and personal attributes that our students need to become outstanding lifelong learners who are able to be happy and successful in school and in life beyond school. We all believe that there are no barriers or excuses to being the best learner we can be! Our character curriculum is the means by which we teach students British Values and deliver their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC). Our comprehensive tutor programme, consisting of weekly main school assemblies, Votes4School sessions, house assemblies and the Inspire Programme, provides students with regular opportunities to explore fundamental British values and engage with a range of spiritual, moral, social and cultural debates.
Since I have been here, I have had a lot of fun and have found I’ve been given more responsibility.

And finally, together, we celebrate our arrival and reflect on the journey as a whole. We also consider how and where we will travel in the future. Travelling expands the mind.
The Learning Journey
Delivering outstanding teaching
At Warlingham, we consider every child to be unique with different strengths and different experiences, so teachers make sure they know the individual context of each student, as this is the starting point for the learning. This means that teachers use prior data and knowledge of personal circumstances as well as in-class questioning to find out what a student is bringing with them on the journey. Each student then needs to know their next steps. This means they need to be able to set themselves goals and know how to meet those goals. These next steps will often be in the form of stepping-stone activities that enable practice, practice and more practice!
At Warlingham, we don’t assume someone has learnt the lesson; teachers must find the evidence of learning. Assessment is continuous in all lessons. All students know what they are good at and how they could improve and we always check their arrival at the destination. We leave no one behind along the way.
The ‘Learning Journey’ acts as a framework for our delivery of consistently excellent teaching across the curriculum and empowers students to develop the tools and skills they need to learn independently.
The first part of the Learning Journey requires teachers and students to share the destination; it is vital that we all agree where we are going. We want students to be clear about what success looks like and feels like and have a vision of where they hope to be by the end of the learning. Teachers make sure they know which key vocabulary to use and how it can be used.

Teachers have access to a wide range of professional development opportunities and they actively share good practice, which is improving the quality of teaching overall.

The large number of Higher Band students at Warlingham School & Sixth Form College make more progress and achieve more highly than similar students do nationally.
Working together with parents, we set challenging targets, develop aspirations and encourage each child to take responsibility for their learning. Effective and regular tracking and monitoring of student achievement enables all teachers to ensure that each student maximises their progress. We provide regular contact with home to ensure that parents and carers are fully informed and involved with the academic progress of their child.
Learning takes place in a purposeful and well-disciplined environment in which students are encouraged to be actively involved through investigation, problem solving, discussion, practical work and research. Our students enjoy learning and generally achieve above national average results at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, as a result of the hard work and dedication of staff, students and their parents. Our examination results are published every year, on our website, www.WarlinghamTLT.co.uk.
At Key Stage 3, students are taught in a variety of ability groupings; for some subjects, students remain in their mixed ability tutor groups but in many subjects they are set according to ability with regular reviews to ensure students are in classes with appropriate levels of challenge and support. We offer an extensive options programme at Key Stages 4 and 5, which enables us to create a personalised learning experience for children during their time with us. We strive to provide what each child will need for the next stage of his or her journey in life in order to be successful – whether that be university, training or employment.
Our students are taught how to learn and they are all, irrespective of ability, stretched and supported in their pursuit of excellence. We believe that all children should make outstanding progress, and to encourage them to make that progress, we ensure that achievement is always celebrated.
Achieving the best
Academic excellence
Although our results are consistently strong, we are not complacent and we are constantly adapting our teaching and curriculum to meet the needs of our learners. Our teachers are experts in their field and yet continue to learn themselves, many supporting the development of teachers in other schools and all work together to share best practice.

The Induction Days were useful because they gave me an idea of what the school was like. At first, I was a bit nervous, going from the top to the bottom of a school, but I soon met new people and settled in.

Care and support
Somecounsellor.children will experience a special educational need at some time in their school lives. Of these, only a small percentage will require additional support to enable them to experience success. The Learning Development Department works closely with students who find learning more challenging to devise programmes and strategies that enable them to be successful at Warlingham. Students are well-supported by specially trained teachers and a large team of teaching assistants and advice of professionals from external agencies is sought where appropriate. All relevant SEND information, including our policy, provision map and information report can be found on our website.
Similarly,www.WarlinghamTLT.co.uk.forstudentswhojoin us mid-year, we provide all the help and support needed to help ensure they settle in well.
Providing individual support
Our comprehensive induction programme ensures that those joining us in Year 7 are well-supported to make the transition from primary to secondary school. We work hard to ensure they settle in and quickly become successful members of our school community.
New parents are sent a welcome letter, which outlines the activities and support that we offer to them and their child, alongside a booklet which contains important information about the school. Our induction days are designed to engage Year 6 students, with taster lessons running alongside fun activities. These days culminate in an evening event for new parents. More information about our induction programme is available on our website,
Our well-established House System also helps students to settle in, by providing a sense of belonging to a smaller community with approximately 300 students per house. Each house has its own unique ethos and distinguishing uniform. Siblings join the same house which helps create familiarity. Each Head of House leads a team, including an attached Senior Leader, Deputy Head of House, Form Tutors and support staff. Students are allocated to a form within their house with a form tutor, who will remain with that form as it progresses up the school. All students’ academic, social and personal development is overseen by their form tutor as well as by the Head and Deputy Head of their house. Great emphasis is placed upon getting to know each individual child and ensuring that their needs are being met. We place a high importance on the emotional health and wellbeing of all our students and work closely with a number of external agencies who can also provide expertise and guidance relevant to student welfare and we also have staff in school who are trained as teacher listeners to offer support to students in-house as well as a part-time

At Warlingham School & Sixth Form College, we are proud to extend our students’ learning opportunities far beyond the classroom. We recognise that all students have different talents, strengths and interests and we make every effort to ensure that these are nurtured and developed through our curriculum enrichment programme. We inspire our students to be curious and passionate about their world and extend their horizons through foreign travel, field trips, conferences and visits to theatres and museums.
In recent years, students from all year groups have visited countries around the world on various trips – Music trips to China and Berlin, Humanities expeditions to Italy, France, Belgium and Iceland, Business Studies visits to New York, PE tours to France, Spain and USA and Modern Foreign Languages exchange visits to France and Spain.
On the home front, there have been many excursions that help our students widen their horizons, including geographical fieldwork, and visits to galleries and sites of historical interest. These trips are supported by a number of events and specialised days, which are designed to develop our students’ teamworking and communication skills to help them in their future careers.
We also run a number of extra-curricular clubs, for example, Astronomy, Badminton, Orchestra and Russian clubs. Further details about the wide variety of clubs Warlingham offers can be found on our website, www.WarlinghamTLT.co.uk.
Our Year 10 students have two weeks of Work Experience in the Summer Term, which helps them to prepare for their future work once they leave school. Meanwhile, all Key Stage 3 students have an Activities Week during which they can participate in a huge range of activities and trips, including Summer Camp in the Lake District, a trip to Paris and a residential PGL activities course. College students do a few days of Work Shadowing and then spend time preparing for work or university applications
Year 12 students support younger students with paired reading and paired maths; this provides a development opportunity for our College students and helps the younger students to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

We offer a wide range of fantastic facilities, all designed to facilitate learning and enjoyment.
Fantastic facilities Investing in our curriculum
Warlingham has a large computer network, with most departments having their own dedicated IT room, which enables students to engage in e-learning across the whole curriculum. Students and parents are also able to access learning materials from home and specialised programs are made available to students who need to use them remotely – for example, the Adobe Creative Suite. We continually review our IT network, equipment and services so they keep up with technological advances. We ensure that our science laboratories are state-of-the-art and have a rolling programme of refurbishment in place. We ensure that all subjects have access to the equipment and facilities that are needed to continue to deliver outstanding learning experiences for all our students.
Our sports facilities are outstanding, including indoor and outdoor cricket nets, an air-conditioned fitness suite, gymnasium, a multi-purpose sports hall, 25 metre heated swimming pool, a newly-refurbished all-weather court and various pitches, including a floodlit Astroturf pitch.

Warlingham has a thriving Sixth Form College with more than 200 dynamic, happy and highly successful students. We have a very clear focus on supporting each and every student to achieve the best academic qualifications alongside developing the skills, character and personal attributes to succeed in their next step whether it be university, an apprenticeship or the world of work. Our curriculum offer is wide and varied with both traditional A Levels and a range of modern vocational and work-related Level 3 courses available.

Our Advance Award is a unique scheme developed to provide a framework of engaging community experiences and learning and it helps our students to become well-rounded and prepared for their next step after college - be it university, apprenticeships or the world of work. The award comprises four elements: Academic Success, Community Engagement, Employability Skills and Work-related Learning. Students take on new responsibilities and challenges outside their chosen area of study, such as supporting students in the lower school and leading charity events in school and in the local community; our annual RAG week led by college students is a real highlight of the school calendar! Students also regularly take part in a variety of enrichment activities, including the Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA), Debating, Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and Young Enterprise.
Students can chat with their friends and enjoy group study in the lounge complete with a kitchen area and lunch service, work from a state-of-the-art desktop PC in our large, fully equipped study area or arrange a meeting in our glass-walled meeting room. They can enjoy alfresco lunch or study at the tables and benches, or even play table tennis in our spacious, private College garden. Our comprehensive induction programme ensures that students from our Year 11 and external students settle in and get to know each other very quickly. Information about the transition from Year 11 into the College and other information about the College is available on our website,
Our College students also benefit from a very strong support system. Each student has regular access to their tutor and a one-to-one mentoring meeting each half term. The focus is on supporting academic progress whilst helping students to develop their ‘personal brand’ and encouraging and signposting them to community-based volunteering activities that will help develop their employability skills and prepare them for the next stage in their development. They are also supported to gain relevant work experience. Students also benefit from the support of a dedicated and experienced team of college staff who mentor students who wish to apply for university places or competitive school leaver programmes; this has led to an extremely successful track record of students being offered places at Oxbridge and other top universities. We constantly strive to improve the College and its environment. Our College centre was designed with the help of our students and offers a comfortable environment in which to study and socialise.
