TICKETS for Warrandyte’s first ever Fireball fundraiser sold out three weeks before the big event and emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley (right), pictured with South Warrandyte CFA captain Greg Kennedy, is being a good sport in showing his support for our Fireball. Locals and their families, friends and supporting businesses have embraced the gala community event, stocking up on tickets, sponsoring tickets for firies and donating money and goods to be auctioned. Organisers of the event, which was instigated to say thank you to local CFA volunteers and raise funds in
support of a much-needed fire tanker, say donations are still being gratefully accepted and no contribution is considered too small. In recognition of the importance of the community fundraiser, Victoria’s emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley took time out from his hefty schedule to help draw attention for the event. Mr Lapsley, who will be attending the evening, said: “It’s about recognising the goodwill and spirit of the great things people do for their community – coming together is so important.” l For more information or to make a donation visit facebook.com/Warrandyte.Fireball

WARRANDYTE Diar y has dominated the annual Community Newspaper Association of Victoria Awards over the weekend, which included landing the “big one” – Newspaper of the Year. The awards were held at a conference centre in Caroline Springs and the Diary made a clean sweep of the night with three wins and being named a finalist for three others. It’s an outstanding achievement given the Diary is one of more than 200 publications across the State registered with CNAV. “It was a fantastic result, not only for our great little team, but all our contributors and the Warrandyte community that we serve,” editor Scott Podmore said. “It’s a really lovely way to cap my first year as editor of this newspaper, the communication hub of Warrandyte. But I was obviously given an enormous head start and advantage on all the others, and that’s called the Cliff Green factor – the best part of 40 or so years of Cliff building the foundations and growing the best community newspaper in the world, let alone Victoria, and I’m merely steering the ship.” The Diary was presented with six certificates on the night: Best Newspaper (winner); Best Layout & Design (winner), in recognition of designer Rachel Schroeder’s excellent work; Best Community Content (winner); Best Photo (finalist) for Stephen Reynolds’ vibrant cover photo of two roving entertainers at the Warrandyte Festival; Best Sports Coverage (finalist); and Best News Feature (finalist) for our story on Peter Stevens and the Black Cat Trail attack in Papua New Guinea. Full report, next Diary.
