In this issue we cast a sartorial eye over the diverse and delightful world of the Donny fashionistas. From velour tracksuits to bespoke evening gowns, (real) Gypsy Chic to Tattoo Freak, Concrete Surfer to Silver Street Supermodel, Doncaster has it all. It is a town where you can be whoever you are without some Tyra Banks telling you that you're just not 'it'. A town where anything goes. If, in the olden days, a glimpse of stocking really was something shocking, then Doncaster is high voltage, baby!

Our resident artist this month is the amazing Jack Bean, whose colourful print work adorns the clothing of Doncaster fashion brand, Offend My Eyes. Jack created Offend My Eyes with his business partner Nick S-J. The philosophy of the company is best summed up in Jack's own words: "To me, clothing shouldn't be about fitting in and trying to be like everybody else. It's about expressing who you really are, so why settle for something boring if your personality is anything but boring?" Which is exactly what #DonnySwagger is all about - being who you are without fear of judgement or ridicule.

On page 6 Doncopolitan's very own glamour-puss, Miss Rachel Horne, guides us through some of the current Doncaster fashion trends. The people of Donny really should be able to walk tall as, when it comes to fashion, we have some of the best peacocks in the UK. But be warned, as well as beauty, there are also some much needed beasts. 'Here there be monsters.' Then we talk to talented ASOS stylist Stevie Hockaday about what it takes to make it in the fashion industry, before members of one of the most visible style tribes in Doncaster, the skateboarders, give us the low-down on Donny Life. Doncaster's Traveller Community are, in terms of style and culture, amongst the most misrepresented of people. On page 24 we get a lesson in real Gypsy style from the Gypsy Princess herself, Violet Cannon. The music focus in this issue is almost as diverse as Donny fashion. Northern Original Mods, skins, soulies - the original founders of British underground style. Check out Revolver on Baxtergate for menswear or visit Tracy Grayson at Anarchy Hair for the perfect hair to match your Northern Original style. 2. Boyo We dedicated issue 5 of Doncopolitan to this very special breed of manboy. Hardworking fellas who live life on the edge need a smart casual style. You might see them driving down Silver Street on their quad bikes or looking fly around DTC in their latest tags.

3. Skater Boy Too creative for established labels, these guys have got their own brand, label and community - NIV and Donny Life (see page 18). 4. Uber Glam Always polished, always on point, never leaves the house ungroomed. Donny is famous for its good lookin’ babes. Check out our independents Tiffany, Venzia Designs and Bella Donna Boutique. 5. Muscle Beach You’ll find him (or her) lifting weights at the gym like Mr Scunthorpe 2010, aka Ashley Todd. Looks intimidating but really he’s a pussy cat. 6. Indie Cindies Known for spending too much time on ASOS (see page 12). Natural habit was once Priory (see page 28) or the Leadmill. Indie Cindies fought against the norm by stealing their nana’s clothes and partying hard in them. Classy But Sassy Case Study A: Tawny Kay can be found clad in the finest charity shop steals but always looks a million Doncopolitan Dollars on stage, where she is one of the rising stars on the UK burlesque scene. Case Study B: Glenda Blenda is a full-time drag diva at Hallcross pub, Doncaster’s only LGBTQ club. Glenda is known for her classy looks and trashy mouth. Keep an eye out for Glenda at this year’s Doncaster Pride in Sir Nigel Gresley Square on 6th August and at the Hallcross after-party that evening. 8. Vintage & Retro We love Zulu Vintage, an online boutique selling exclusive luxury vintage garms. You’ll find everything from Zandra Rhodes to Gucci and Prada. If you are looking for a bespoke modern twist on a vintage look, check out Wonderland Awaits, a treasure trove based at Branton Garden Centre. Anastasia Walker of Bang Band Romeo recently wore a bespoke commission whilst playing on the main stage at the Isle of Wight Festival (see page 42).

9. Moustache Man Greg T Brown is one of the world’s most beloved mustachioed men. Hailing from Stainforth, he now works in LA as a fulltime alternative fashion model. Swoon. 10. Tattoo Townie Doncaster loves this art-form and we are proud that Doncaster has one of the greatest number of tattooists per square mile to be found anywhere on the planet and that it is the home of one of the biggest tattoo conventions in Europe. Tattoo Jam takes place on the 5th to 7th of August at Doncaster Racecourse, visit tat to o j a m .co m for further details. 11. Suited and Booted We love seeing all the Donny boyos suited and booted at Donny Races. They scrub up well thanks to independent retailers like Punch on Wood Street, who stock the best guy-garms around. 12. Hippy Heroes You might not catch this one at the races - more likely to be at an animal rights rally. We love the hippy heroes’ rainbow vibes and practical footwear. You can steal their look by making your own clothes, taking dressmaking classes at Knit & Stitch, and upcycling a charity shop find from one of Doncaster many outlets. Best of all, you’ll be giving your coins to a good cause. The Blinders are one of the hottest new alternative bands around and with influences from Slaves, The Doors and Black Sabbath, the band, who Doncaster born and bred but now living in Manchester, are bringing the town back onto the map for one of the most thriving places for new and upcoming musicians.

People of Doncaster - what can I say? If you weren’t there then you missed an absolute treat.

The band formed around 2014 and consists of 3 lads who go by the names of Thomas Haywood, Charlie McGough and Matt Neale. The Blinders combine their own flavour of styles to create their own unique sound whilst still keeping their alternative and ‘Punkadelic’ edge. Their choice to write about populist culture as well as political culture sparks a ‘enigmatic’ fire into their performances, and songs such as 84 and Murder At The Ballet from their new EP Hidden Horror Dance capture that type of diverse and ‘visceral’ notion. The bands live gigs have been enjoyed by many and leave people always wanting more! Luckily for us Doncaster lot we get to welcome the 3 boys back, as they are performing at this years annual MapFest. You can catch them at CAST theatre and Social Bar on the 4th and 5th of August. The night of Friday 1st July led me to the Leopard, where I found myself captivated by Manchester’s Federal Charm, who were supported by a trio of Yorkshire bands. The night opened with Doncaster’s very own Retroject, an up-and-coming band who always please the crowds, especially here at the Leopard. Next on were Off The Wire, kooky and fresh with just the right amount of weird. The volume ramped up as The Doldrums took to the stage. The Leeds-based band gave us a great set full of power and energy which took you to a place where Jack White and Pete Doherty meet up to get messy. The crowd loved it. Federal Charm started their set with ‘Gotta Give It Up’, a guitar frenzy that got the small but responsive crowd immediately hooked. Federal Charm take you on a journey, touching on different genres and styles along the way, and the crowd at the Leopard certainly got that tonight. We picked out some Rage Against The Machine and a hint of Flea from the bass player and a lead singer, who moved from rock to blues and various places in between, throwing in a harmonica to boot. All this was held together by a drummer whose consistency and timing meant that the set felt cohesive as we followed the journey Federal Charm were taking us on. It struck me how tight the band are. Federal Charm are not only fantastic musicians, but clearly very good friends. Their chemistry on stage was clear, as they bounced off each other and seemed to really enjoy putting on a good show. Although the turnout was limited, the band gave us their all and engaged the crowd with their banter and enthusiasm. I thought their new single, ‘Masterplan’, was the wind up to the show, but Federal Charm followed this up with their own favourite, ‘Silhouette’, and the rarely played yet superb ‘Walk Away’. Their trip to Doncaster was day 5 of a 17-day tour covering the whole of the UK, so if you missed them here, you still have chance to see them over the next few weeks. Hopefully they’ll be back at the Leopard for a third visit soon. Their current album, Across The Divide, is well worth a listen. Cattle Decapitation are a deathgrind band from San Diego, California formed in 1996, who in their early years created protest songs about the mistreatment and consumption of animals, the abuse of the environment, and subjects such as misanthropy and genocide of the human race. Much of their music is based on putting humans in the situations that animals are subjected to, for example animal testing and slaughter. While the band started with an entirely vegetarian line-up, only two current members are vegetarian. The internationally-recognised band will be appearing at Vintage on Silver Street in conjunction with Mapfest.

Women's Lives Matter

PRIDE

An activist group in Doncaster has dedicated itself to providing an alternative to the now closed Women’s Aid. Women’s Aid is a UK-wide charity which aims to end domestic violence against women and children. Many local women raised money to launch the service in the 1970s.

Women’s Lives Matter is an anti-austerity feminist group which campaigned against the closure of Women’s Aid in Doncaster. A petition opposing the closure attracted over 1,500 signatures. Women’s Aid had relied on funding from the Big Lottery Fund for the past three years. Prior to this, their services were funded by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. In a statement, the Council said they were assisting Women’s Aid in sourcing new funding. In an online statement, Women’s Lives Matter said: “We already have several trained counsellors in Doncaster, including one who specialises in ethnic minority women, now unemployed after the closure of Women’s Aid. We also have an accountant and a solicitor among our supporters who can help us set up a new organisation. We have even been offered space in the rooms above the Real Junk Food Project café to use as a base. We just need to secure some funding to pay the wages of the staff.” Karen Johnson, Assistant Director of Communities at Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC), said: “We were recently approached by Women’s Aid about their financial situation and are currently helping them to identify alternative funding. We will be ensuring that those in need continue to have access to support. Doncaster Council did historically contract Women’s Aid to provide services to victims of domestic violence. However, this ended in 2013 following the appointment of a new provider. This was the result of a comprehensive tendering process.” The Women’s Lives Matter Campaign meets regularly at The Real Junk Food Project on Scot Lane. The co-ordinators have applied for funding to secure the service and continue this essential service. “Tackling domestic abuse is a key priority for the Council and its partners and we have a wide range of help and support available for victims in Doncaster. For confidential advice, information and support, call our domestic abuse helpline on 0800 470 1505. Always ring 999 if you are in immediate danger.” Doncaster operates a domestic abuse service, made up of agencies including the police, Council, NHS and voluntary sector services, such as Riverside ECHG, Women’s Aid, Victim Support, and Doncaster Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Service.

Plans are well underway for the tenth Doncaster Pride, which will take place on the 20th August at the heart of the town centre. With humble beginnings in the Market Place and an audience of around 1,000 in 2007, the event now proudly stands as one of the biggest in Doncaster, with crowds expected to reach 10,000 to mark the 10th birthday. The event is run for and by the gay community, but has always welcomed everyone including families to the colourful day, which includes a walk through the streets of Doncaster. The walk is led by a pipe and drum band and features local community groups, including the South Yorkshire Commemorative Trust and representatives from collieries across the borough. All in all, a fun, friendly and colourful day out that’s completely free. Add to the walk and the main stage a mix of food and drink outlets, stalls crammed full of info and retailers selling an array of goods and the event is complete. Chair of Doncaster Pride, Jenny Dewsnap, said: “We have been doing this for ten years and we are proud of what we’ve achieved as a very small voluntary group. We’ve seen things change enormously in that time here in Doncaster. We’ve seen support from within and outside the gay community grow, and we now have many sponsors and supporters who help us to deliver this fabulous event. We’ve also seen our crowds grow year on year, not just from the gay community but much wider, all coming together in unity and celebration to have an amazing day out. Doncaster Pride has grown to be one of the largest annual events in the town and it puts Doncaster on the map for the right reasons. We feel we’re part of a growing number of hugely successful Pride events, and of course we reckon we’re one of the best around. We must be doing something right to be going this strong for the tenth birthday event. We are so proud of what we’ve achieved, but more so we are proud of everyone in Doncaster who has supported us over ten years. We urge you all to come and join in on 20th August and help us celebrate this milestone. “Pride does have a serious side. Recent events in Florida - the senseless murder of 49 people from our community - have served to remind us all that Pride events are still as important now as they have ever been. The world may have advanced, but homophobia and lack of education prevails. Whilst ever one person anywhere in the world is suffering because of their sexuality, we will continue, and we will remember the real reasons why Pride events and the visibility they give to the gay community are still relevant in 2016.” Walk of Unity – From 1pm. This summer, St. Modwen, which owns and manages The Village at Waterdale, has started work on the redevelopment of Young Street car park to deliver new and improved retail and leisure facilities to the area.

The redevelopment includes plans for a two-storey building, incorporating over 22,000 sq ft of space for a variety of uses, including retail, office, leisure and restaurants. Work is expected to be completed in early 2017. Other improvement works will also take place on existing buildings close to the Young Street car park to improve the retail experience for shoppers and residents. As part of St. Modwen’s ongoing investment in the town, each Friday from 22nd July to the 26th August, The Village at Waterdale will be hosting a free family event to keep the kids entertained during summer. Children will be able to enjoy a range of fun activities, from face painting and balloon modelling to special events in association with Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery and Sticky Mits Nursery. The events include: • 22nd July: Animal Party – youngsters can pet a range of animals, including giant snails, snakes, lizards, hedgehogs and rabbits. 29th July: Balloon modelling. 5th August: Summer crafts and face painting with Sticky Mits Nursery. 12th August: Punch & Judy Show. 19th August: WW1 Children’s event with Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. 26th August: Animal Party and free book giveaways. Amazing Floral Sugar is Doncaster’s biggest cake and sugar craft supply shop, which prides itself on its bespoke special occasion cakes and first-class customer service. Shop owner Heather was born in Yorkshire but lived in Kent for several years, where her passion for baking began. After creating cakes for friends and family as a hobby, this quickly turned into a thriving a home business. Heather is now a member of the British Guild of Sugar Crafters and was taught by Eddie Spence MBE, aka The Royal Cake Maker, who was also chairman of the Guild and the artisan behind Charles and Diana’s wedding cake. Heather now has six years under her belt and is one of the most established retailers in the new Waterdale development, which plans to create a home for unique independents. The shop offers everything, from sugar craft tools, tins and stand hire to haberdashery crafts and regular workshops. There is a kitchen on site, so you can order freshly-baked cakes free from additives and preservatives. Heather confesses that she likes a challenge. Her baking skills can accommodate all sizes and budgets. Customers can walk in off the street and work with her to design their dream cake. “My strangest cake has to be a cake for a bowel surgeon retiring from Doncaster Royal Infirmary. It was an upside-down heart representing a giant bowel. The most complex and challenging work comes from modelling in icing. I’ve done everything from coal miners to caravans”. One of Heather’s career highlights so far is appearing on Japanese TV after a woman in Doncaster with a world-renowned 65-year-old easter egg was approached by the production company for an interview. Heather was headhunted and asked to make a replica of the egg for their documentary, which was then broadcasted on TV to thousands of viewers. Heather is certainly one of Doncaster’s hardworking #Girlbosses and recommends that if you’re passionate about something and want to start your own business, “go for it, it will be hard work but it will pay off”. With 300+ working artists, a day devoted specifically to those in the industry (ARTIST friDAY), seminars, workshops, the Tattoo Masters’ Ball, trade stands, vendors and lots of live entertainment, Tattoo Jam is an unmissable event for anyone with an interest in ink.

A Hidden History explores the stories of Romany Gypsies and Travellers who have lived or reside in Doncaster. The project is led by Paula and Violet, both Romany Gypsies who currently work as engagement officers for CVS. Although Gypsies and Travellers have lived in the Doncaster area for hundreds of years, this is the first exhibition showcasing Gypsy and Traveller life throughout the 20th century. This project tells the story of a culture’s hidden history through photography and precious belongings. Join Paula & Violet on Thursday 18th of August 11.00am – 1.00pm for a talk and discussion about the #ProudGypsyTraveller project. Exhibition opens on 13th August.

It’s hard not to get carried away and completely absorbed in salsa when at one of his classes. He loves nothing more that imparting his knowledge into eager salseros, seeing them progress from shy first-timers at the back of the warm-up into salsa addicts who have to be dragged off the dance floor at the end of the night. When he is not wowing the ladies (and some men) with his great style (bum wiggling!) he’s... well, he’s dancing.
