lifestyles & neighborhoods Real Estate With housing costs below the national averages, it’s no surprise housing statistics are making a splash in Warrick County. Ohio Township has seen the biggest boon to the area, with median home cost at $143,300, this is 7.8 percent below the nation’s average for cost of living. A variety of subdivisions encourage creative designs that take advantage of the county’s rolling hills. Modern apartment/condominium projects, as well as senior housing, follow this population boom, too. NerdWallet. com announced that Boonville is the ninth best place in Indiana to raise a young family. www.bestplaces.net.
Population Warrick County’s total population is 61,049, a growth of 2.3 percent since the 2010 census (according to data by stats.indiana.edu), including 22,454 households. The population has grown at a consistent rate over the past decade, putting Warrick County as the 11th fastest-growing county in the state. Boonville, the county seat, has the largest population, with 6,246. Newburgh has a population of 3,325; Chandler, 3,423; Lynnville, 888; Elberfeld, 625; and Tennyson 279.
Crime Small-town living has its perks. Warrick County’s crime rate is lower than surrounding areas, with property crimes making up the majority of reported offenses. Administration
Warrick County is administered by a three-commissioner board elected by the public. The board is responsible for most of the county’s business, including enacting ordinances. A seven-member county council handles the financial details, serving as a check and balance for the board of commissioners. Boonville serves as the county seat, with offices housed in both the historic courthouse and the county judicial center. The City of Boonville elects a mayor and council to handle the city’s administration, while the towns of Elberfeld, Chandler, Lynnville, Newburgh and Tennyson all elect councils to conduct town business.

Protecting the People
The Warrick County Sheriff’s Department serves the needs of county residents, while police departments in Boonville, Chandler and Newburgh provide protection to their citizens. The Elberfeld community is served by a part-time Town Marshal and Deputy Marshal, in addition to coverage provided by the county sheriff’s office. Many of the departments also utilize reserve deputies, volunteers who fill in for officers as needed. The City of Boonville has the county’s only paid fire department, employing nine firefighters, three captains, a chief and an assistant chief. The Boon Township Fire Territory was recently established, which helps the department better serve township residents as well as those in the city limits. The remaining communities are served by seven township or town volunteer fire departments, pooling from more than 200 local volunteers. Alcoa Warrick Operations has its own fire department, serving the needs of the aluminum smelting and rolling facility.

A Washington printing press from the 1880s was used to print the Boonville Standard. Civil War cases feature musical instruments that the Indiana Brigade carried into battle and weapons from the conflict. Antique toys from the 1880s through the 1960s fill the charming nursery room. Step back into the turn of the 19th century to view a one-room school or view decades of clothing from the bustles of 1890 to the dropped waists and short skirts of the 1920s among other exhibits.

There is an abundance of quality real estate, including established industrial parks that are complete with infrastructure and are wired for instant global access. In addition, Warrick County boasts an excellent transportation network via its road, rail, water and air systems. Furthermore, the county offers businesses several incentives, including a variety of state tax credits, established TIF districts, competitive tax phase-in programs, and the area’s rich natural resources. December
Boonville Christmas Parade In 1946, just a year after the end of the second World War, returning soldiers in Boonville began a local Jaycees chapter. The group, searching for a way to celebrate the holidays, came upon the idea of a town parade. Now, more than six decades later, the Boonville Christmas Parade has become the longest-running parade in the state. It annually pulls people from surrounding communities to kick-start the holiday season. The parade also marks the arrival of everyone’s favorite elf, Santa. Christmas in Olde Newburgh The Christmas season begins in Newburgh the first weekend in December. The event offers the traditional holiday activities like caroling
and roasting chestnuts on an open fire. Santa is available throughout the three-day celebration. Tinsel Town in Tennyson The town of Tennyson sparkles during the Christmas season. Each December, Build a Better Community sponsors Tinsel Town in Tennyson, which includes a parade, Santa and refreshments. Christmas in Boonville The Boonville Merchants Assocation has begun dressing the downtown square the first weekend in December with the Christmas spirit. The theme last year was Our Christmas Story, a play on the classic movie A Christmas Story. The event, which featured local people playing the parts in the movie, was the official kickoff to the holiday season, leading up to the annual Christmas parade.

ISTEP, Indiana’s state-sanctioned testing, is administered each spring to students in grades three through 10, with the Graduation Qualifying Exam administered to sophomores. In 2014, Warrick County’s pass rate was 89.8 percent for mathematics and 88.1 percent for English/language arts, well above the state’s average in both areas. Graduation rates for all three high schools — Castle, Boonville and Tecumseh — are above 91 percent. In Ohio Township, which has the largest concentration of students, public schools spend $8,825 per student. There are approximately 19.5 students per teacher in Ohio Township. Extracurricular activities round out the curriculum and provide students with opportunities for additional growth through music, theatre, philanthrophy, art, foreign language, writing and more. Among these, high school athletics have a rich tradition in Warrick County. Castle, Boonville and Tecumseh high schools each boast numerous team, as well as individual, state champions. Due to growth in population, particularly in the southwestern corner of Warrick County, the school corporation has faced many challenges in accommodating the increasing classroom sizes. In 2007, the school board passed a resolution to adopt a middle school concept. As a result, the school corporation spent approximately $27 million on the construction of the Castle South Middle School in southern Warrick County, while making numerous other upgrades and renovations to its existing schools. Safety is also of major importance to the community. Over the past couple of years, the Warrick County School Corporation has worked to create secure entryways to each school. In addition, school resource officers have been placed within the schools to help provide added security, as well as a safe option for students to go to when they need help. School resource officers are provided by the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Chandler, Boonville and Newburgh police departments. The Indiana State Police also have a presence in local schools.

healthcare &wellness
arrick County is home to three hospitals — St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital in Boonville, Deaconess Gateway Hospital and The Women’s Hospital, both in Newburgh. The Women’s Hospital opened in 2001, the first anchor facility on Deaconess’ Warrick County campus. It was the first hospital in the area to be solely dedicated to serving women’s needs in surgery, birthing, infertility, outreach and more. In addition, the hospital provides extensive newborn care, offering a Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. When Deaconess Gateway Hospital opened in 2006, it brought with it a focus on concentrated areas of care, an emergency department and an opportunity for Deaconess Gateway Campus to become the hub of specialized medical care in Warrick County. Neurology, cardiology and orthopedics are just a few specialty areas offered at Deaconess Gateway. A partnership with Riley Hospital for Children also provides the hospital a unique opportunity to offer specialized pediatric care unavailable anywhere else locally. St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital is a small, community hospital in Boonville that has served Warrick County residents for a little more than three decades. It is a Critical Access Hospital, offering ambulatory and wellness services. In addition to its emergency room and inpatient care, the hospital campus also provides diagnostic and therapeutic care services to meet the needs of the area’s rural residents. Warrick County is also home to many nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and assisted living facilities that work with doctors and hospitals to ensure the medical needs of the county are met. With more than 10 elderly-care establishments, residents can be assured that they will always be cared for. The newest addition to senior care is The Village at Hamilton Pointe, an 11-acre senior living campus developed by the Leo Brown Group in Newburgh. Hamilton Pointe’s full continumum of care includes a 115-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, a 53-unit assisted living facility and 24 independent living garden home units. St. Mary’s has built a new $18.8 million, 44,000 square foot expansion for the new Epworth Crossing. The facility features a new and expanded St. Mary’s Breast Center, Convenient Care East, which will nearly double in size, St. Mary’s Women’s Wellness Center, primary care and specialty physician offices, a highly advanced 3T MRI, lab, digital x-ray and ultrasound all under one roof, a community space for demonstrations such as healthy cooking and a medical equipment and retail store. Additional services include Tai Chi and yoga classes. In January of this year, St. Mary’s opened up its new convenient care facility in Boonville, anchoring itself as a major medical provider for the community. The Warrick Wellness Trail is the new medical district surrounding the area of Epworth Road and S.R. 66. Anchored by Deaconess Gateway Hospital, the Warrick Wellness Trail has become home to nine other medical practices. The entire project will take nine phases and will eventually extend Stahl Road all the way to the Newburgh Walmart.

Investing in our Success We call ourselves Alcoans. We are innovators in safety and environmental practices, experts in global business, and leaders in community organizations. Together, our 2,000 employees create an average economic output worth $6.63 million per day. In fact, one dollar of every $20 in the area economy can be attributed to our operation. We’re proud of our contributions. And we’re pleased to be such an important partner in this region’s collective success.
