WORLD CLASS FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING
We work with a global team of experts.
We are part of a global organisation, but we take a local approach to each and every project. We have in-depth knowledge and understanding of local building codes and fire safety engineering regulations, all supported by a wealth of international knowledge and research.
We use performance based design principles where standard codes may not be suitable to demonstrate that an alternative approach will still meet the performance requirements.

PROJECT CASE STUDIES
INNER SYDNEY HIGH SCHOOL Hansen Yuncken / Schools Infrastructure NSWTHE CHALLENGE
This future focused school comprises a campus approach consisting of a new high-rise tower and three refurbished heritage buildings.
The new building includes a large gymnasium and movement studio, a roof top outdoor games court and a central resource library with ‘mini-libraries’ located throughout the school. The design brief was intended to foster a strong connection to the community through shared use of selected campus facilities.
The development was staged with the refurbished heritage buildings being occupied initially by the school whilst the construction of the high-rise tower was completed. This presented unique fire safety hazards and challenges throughout the construction process.
OUR SOLUTION
Warringtonfire developed a comprehensive fire safety strategy for the school which included a major fire safety upgrade of the existing heritage buildings and integration with the new tower. Our team of fire safety engineers conducted advanced evacuation modelling to evaluate and inform the holistic evacuation strategy for the school. Smoke modelling was used to assist in the design of the mechanical and natural smoke hazard management provisions for the gymnasium and assembly spaces.
An interim fire safety strategy was developed for the school to manage fire safety risks during construction. This included extensive stakeholder consultation, risk assessment, and development of mitigation measures which were progressively reviewed and updated throughout the construction process.
NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA, PARKES, CANBERRA
National Gallery of Australia
THE CHALLENGE
Warringtonfire were engaged by the National Gallery of Australia to complete the landmark main entry building extension, the temporary exhibition gallery extension and ongoing refurbishment works.
The original building has a series of interconnected storeys via enclosed light wells (atria), non-fire isolated stairways and double volume spaces that ultimately connect the eight storeys of the original building and approximately 30,000m2 of floor space. The building also contains highly valuable artefacts and hosts large numbers of people during operational hours.
OUR SOLUTION
Our team of fire safety engineers used a suite of specialist analysis tools to demonstrate compliance with the relevant benchmark performance requirements. Because the National Gallery of Australia is located on National Capital Authority land in the ACT, we had to develop a robust approvals process to facilitate future maintenance of the building’s essential fire safety systems.
We used full 3D modelling of the public areas – together with evacuation modelling – to simulate smoke movement and required evacuation times. The significant size and importance of the building has also required close coordination with the stakeholders and ACT Fire and Rescue.
PROJECT CASE STUDIES
SURGICAL, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION SERVICE (STARS), BRISBANE
Watpac Constructions and Metro North Hospital and Health Service
THE CHALLENGE
Located within the Herston Health Precinct, the STARS includes a new eight storey healthcare building with a single basement level. The building consists of 100 rehabilitation beds, special purpose rehabilitation support areas and a surgical and endoscopic centre – with a 32 bed surgical inpatient room, seven operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms and recovery spaces.
OUR SOLUTION
The prescriptive fire safety requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) often result in impractical design solutions that impede the day-today functionality of rehabilitation and ambulatory care health buildings. We developed a wide range of performance based solutions to meet the unique clinical, security and fire safety needs of this facility. This required extensive consultation with stakeholders – including the builder, the fire brigade and the local health authority.
BARANGAROO SOUTH, SYDNEY
Lendlease THE CHALLENGE
Barangaroo South is located in Sydney’s CBD, on the shores of its world-famous Sydney harbour. It is the largest urban regeneration project in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics.
Setting new standards in sustainability, Barangaroo South is Australia’s first large scale carbon neutral mixed-use precinct – including commercial buildings, residential apartments and retail spaces.
OUR SOLUTION
Warringtonfire provided fire safety engineering services for the shared basement and the buildings that sit above it. A range of solutions were developed to address fire ratings to structural elements, evacuation provisions, firefighting services and smoke hazard management systems. Our work was critical in enabling the construction of the commercial buildings – International House and Daramu House – using unprotected mass timber.
We worked closely with Lendlease to develop fire safety engineering solutions and to facilitate their review and approval by the relevant authorities.
FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS
Our experienced fire safety engineers can help from the early planning stage of a project.
We encourage early engagement with all key stakeholders, as getting the fire strategy right at the beginning of a project will save time and money throughout the project lifecycle.
