Call us home For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 studentto-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President’s Message WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10

2009-10 President’s Message

DR. HAMID SHIRVANI

University President California State University, Stanislaus

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking as one of the “Best 371 Colleges” in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the CCAA for the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Additionally, our athletes enjoy a graduation rate that is significantly higher than other NCAA Division II schools; 66.7 percent of CSU Stanislaus athletes graduate in six years compared to 55 percent of student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level nationwide. Our outstanding student-athletes and coaches continue to receive recognition for their many achievements. Pole vaulter Kasey Burlingham was the National Champion in Men’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf Coach John Cook was named West Region Coach of the Year, and over 40 of our athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors last year. Several Warrior graduates have gone on to succeed in athletics beyond their stellar performances here at CSU Stanislaus. Three of our baseball team’s players were drafted by Major League Baseball last spring, including Dakota Watts (16th Round, Minnesota Twins), Kyle Loretelli (38th Round, San Diego Padres), and Eric Federico (39th Round, Colorado Rockies). Joining our coaching staff this year are two Division I coaches with impressive records and the experience to take our men’s soccer and basketball teams to new

heights. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dana Taylor comes from Oregon State University, where he led his team to post-season appearances in the highly competitive Pac10 Conference. Larry Reynolds, Head Coach for Men’s Basketball, also has extensive Division I and II experience and has won several conference championships. The Student Recreation Complex is another enhancement and resource for students this year. The University is quite proud of this new 24-acre complex which features an all- weather track and soccer stadium with 2,100 seats, 18,500 square foot fitness center, and intramural sports fields. California State University, Stanislaus’ reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics continues to grow. I encourage you to build on the strength and momentum of the CSU Stanislaus Warriors by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding sports teams. Go Warriors!

Season Preview WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10

Experienced Warriors look for return trip to conference tournament Coming off a 13-15 season where the Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball team qualified for the conference tournament, there seems to be even more promise for the upcoming season. With key returning players and talented transfers, the Warriors should have the keys to make a return trip to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament in March. The Warriors went 10-5 at home in 2008-09, proving that they know how to defend home court. The goal now is to capitalize on their wins on the road. Sharon Turner is excited to start her eighth season as the head coach, but has been struggling trying to get her roster set. Early on, Turner waited on three transfers — two of them potential starters — to be approved by the NCAA before the season-opening trip over Thanksgiving weekend. “We have some young ladies that we are waiting on to be cleared and once that happens that changes our team drastically. If their waivers are approved we will have a very good team. We will still be good even if they are not approved, but we will be much better if they are,” Turner said. Turner has high expectations for two of these transfers, seniors Alishea Kelly and Whitney Lewis both from Mesa State. “(Alishea) Kelly probably could be best guard in our conference. She is phenomenally talented and will really be a big surprise to people in our conference. The fact that she is a senior is the bad part, but getting her for a year is better than not at all,” Turner said. Sophomore transfer Wynter Turner, from Riverside Community College, is also expected to make a difference, “She will be definitely make a big difference in what we do.” The returning players expecting WARRIORATHLETICS.COM

to contribute this season, include allCCAA junior forward Katie Busi and guard Christin Gowan. Busi started in all 28 games last season, averaging 13.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. She led the conference with 65 blocked shots and 2.3 blocks per game and was ninth in the CCAA in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Busi also lead the Warriors with 31 steals. Gowan struggled with a knee injury for most of last season but Turner thinks that she will now be a huge asset. “I am expecting her to have a much better season. Her knee was in bad shape last year and she had a rough go of it playing in pain trying to play through it. She just wasn’t herself,” Turner said. Even with an injured knee, Gowan still averaged five points per game, had 15 steals, 60 assists and 24 3-pointers. She also led the team in free-throw percentage at .774, going 41-for-53. Other returning players that Turner has confidence in are junior guards Jeanette Rowe and Andreanna Marshall, as well as senior Guard Nathalie Olveda. Another key player would be sophomore Samantha Bertomen. “They have all improved tremendously, Rowe and Marshall have really improved offensively and ballhandling wise. I am expecting them to really step up and contribute this season,” said Turner. Turner only brought in two freshmen this year in Bianca Padilla, a guard from La Jolla and Turlock Chris-

tian graduate Erin Santiago. With so many talented transfers and returning players it may be difficult for the freshmen to see playing time but they are expected to make a difference in the near future. The Warriors are carrying 18 players this season. “We have a lot of depth and back up. The new transfer kids are just phenomenal. They will contribute so much. I’m really excited about them,” said Turner. As for who Turner expects to be the teams to beat this season, “Like most people you want to believe you are No. 1 until someone knocks you off, but (UC) San Diego will be tough again, as always, and I really think that Cal Poly Pomona will be a real shocker. I think they are really going to surprise people,” said Turner. With 15 away games this season the Warriors will have to work that much harder to compete in the conference. The conference season begins Dec. 4, on the road in the Bay Area, stopping in Arcata for the Humboldt Classic on Dec. 11 and 12, and will return home Jan. 2 to host Cal Poly Pomona. They have the luxury of being home for most of January and the end of February right before the CCAA Championship tournament starting March 2nd. Turner believes her team has what it takes to make it to the CCAA tournament this season: “ Since my second year here I have been trying to make sure we have good studentathletes, but above all, really trying to make sure that we have good people. “I like the kids here and I think they work hard and have fun together. I am really excited, I think we have a chance to make a lot of noise in our conference.”

Head Coach WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10

SHAron SHA ron TU TUrner rner Head Coach

Sharon Turner is now in her eighth season at the helm of the Warriors women’s basketball program. Turner took over as the head coach in May of 2002 and led the Warriors to the NCAA Division II Postseason Tournament for the first time in 12 years. Behind the leadership of two two-time All-Americans Shannon Donnelly and Aprile Powell, the Warriors finished tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with an 18-10 overall mark and 15-7 in conference play in 2002-03. That mark is the program’s highest finish since joining the CCAA in 1998. Last season, Turner’s team enjoyed its best season in six years, going 13-15 overall and 8-12 in conference play. The team qualified for the CCAA conference tournament for the first time after finishing tied for sixth in conference play. Prior to coming to Cal State Stanislaus, Turner was the Associate Head Coach at Cal Poly Pomona for three seasons. During Turner’s three-year tenure at Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos won the CCAA championship three times. In addition, the Broncos won back-to-back NCAA Division II regional and national championships in 2001 and 2002. As the associate head coach at Pomona, Turner served as the recruiting and academic coordinator and worked with the Bronco post players. She also organized summer camps and clinics. During her time at Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos compiled an overall record of 55-7, had two post players receive all-CCAA and All-American awards, one being named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, and the other the Most Valuable Player of the Elite Eight. Turner has coached for more than 20 years at the college and high school levels. Turner served as the recruiting coordinator at Long Beach State and spent time at her alma mater, San Jose State, as an assistant coach. She also helped start the program at Cal State Monterey Bay. As a player, Turner played the off-guard and power forward positions at San Jose State, where she finished her collegiate career among the Spartan leaders in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and free-throw percentage. After her playing career at San Jose State concluded in 1986, Turner coached at Mira Loma and Rio Americano High Schools in Sacramento from 1986 to 1991. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in Afro-American Studies from San Jose State. Turner is currently a bible college student working towards a doctorate degree in Biblical Studies and Pastorial Counseling at Dominion Bible Institute and Seminary. In addition, she serves as the faculty advisor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes at CSU Stanislaus. The couple has two children, Ashleigh, 23, and son Allen, 12, and two grandchildren, Malachi (4) and Josiah (2), and live in Modesto.

E-Mail: rjhiegert@goccaa.org Home: (925) 634-4838 The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division

II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 12th year as the Commissioner.

Student Recreation Complex WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10 California State University, Stanislaus students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007 and the complex opened this fall in time for the soccer season. Sixty-eight percent of student voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the referendum and student body officer elections. “I am very pleased to see that students are so supportive of this project, because it will really be an asset to the University and the community,” California State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this University and contributes to physical education and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components. It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.” The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/ football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

44

CSU Stanislaus students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term starting in 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer. A unique feature of the project is the campus commitment that half of all donations and profits related to the facility will be directed toward reducing the student fee after the complex is opened. The other half of donations will go to athletic scholarships while the remaining half of profits generated by the facilities will be designated for future expansion and improvements of the complex. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved studentgenerated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities. “We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY STANISLAUS

Athletics Facilities WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10

The gymnasium took on the name, Warrior Arena, in 1999 — 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. The Arena is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Health and Physical Education. Warrior Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include the Student Recreation Complex, which features a soccer and track stadium, a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts. Both baseball and softball fields also feature batting cages. A full-size swimming pool is adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

Advising Program/F.Y.E. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL • 2009-10

Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determinaAMYE LEON tion and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct Academic Advisor interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consistently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU, Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

A Special program for first semester freshmen Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. First Year Experience for Athletes Only: All the World’s a Stage (or a Playing Field) THEA 1500 — Acting for Non-Theatre Majors (Dr. Mayer or Dr. O’Donnell) MDIS 1040 — Seminar in First Year Experience (Amye Leon)

SAAC is also very active in community activities including raising money for the NCAA Division II sponsored Make-A-Wish Foundation annual fund drive. The Warriors led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in fund raising for Make-A-Wish for four consecutive years (2004-08), contributing $3,213.65 in 2007-08. In 2006-07, the CSU Stanisalus SAAC raised $4,021, which was the second highest total in the nation surpassed only by Saint Anslem Colleges $4,050.
