Call us home For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 studentto-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President’s Message MEN’S SOCCER • 2009

2009-10 President’s Message

DR. HAMID SHIRVANI

University President California State University, Stanislaus

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking as one of the “Best 371 Colleges” in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the CCAA for the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Additionally, our athletes enjoy a graduation rate that is significantly higher than other NCAA Division II schools; 66.7 percent of CSU Stanislaus athletes graduate in six years compared to 55 percent of student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level nationwide. Our outstanding student-athletes and coaches continue to receive recognition for their many achievements. Pole vaulter Kasey Burlingham was the National Champion in Men’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf Coach John Cook was named West Region Coach of the Year, and over 40 of our athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors last year. Several Warrior graduates have gone on to succeed in athletics beyond their stellar performances here at CSU Stanislaus. Three of our baseball team’s players were drafted by Major League Baseball last spring, including Dakota Watts (16th Round, Minnesota Twins), Kyle Loretelli (38th Round, San Diego Padres), and Eric Federico (39th Round, Colorado Rockies). Joining our coaching staff this year are two Division I coaches with impressive records and the experience to take our men’s soccer and basketball teams to new

heights. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dana Taylor comes from Oregon State University, where he led his team to post-season appearances in the highly competitive Pac10 Conference. Larry Reynolds, Head Coach for Men’s Basketball, also has extensive Division I and II experience and has won several conference championships. The Student Recreation Complex is another enhancement and resource for students this year. The University is quite proud of this new 24-acre complex which features an all- weather track and soccer stadium with 2,100 seats, 18,500 square foot fitness center, and intramural sports fields. California State University, Stanislaus’ reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics continues to grow. I encourage you to build on the strength and momentum of the CSU Stanislaus Warriors by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding sports teams. Go Warriors!

Head Coach MEN’S SOCCER • 2009

DANA TAYLOR Head Coach Dana Taylor begins a new era of men’s soccer at Cal State Stanislaus, entering his first year at the helm of the program. Taylor comes to the Warriors from Division I Pac-10 Conference power Oregon State, and brings with him a wealth of collegiate coaching experience. Over the course of his coaching career at Oregon State and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., 22 of Taylor’s players have moved on to play professionally. While at Oregon State, Taylor’s teams did well in the classroom, over his career posting grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Players earned conference academic honors 58 times, including 12 in 2006, 10 in ‘07 and seven in ‘08) and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American status on three occasions. Taylor’s squads had a 10-year record of 79-98-14 with Oregon State. Through the 2002-07 seasons, however, the Beavers’ average was just shy of 10 wins per season. In his 10 years at Oregon State, Taylor’s players were recognized as all-conference athletes 46 times and as allregion 11 times. Danny Mwanga received Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors in 2008. Alan Gordon earned All-American honors in 2003 and Joe Zaher was a Freshman All-American in 2002. Peter Billmeyer and Aaron McCarthy were alson named All-Americans under Taylor’s guidance. Taylor holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America advanced national diploma. He has been a national staff instructor, coaching USSF national courses as well as being part of the national goalkeeping staff. The 2002 Oregon State team won a school-record 13 games and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Taylor was named the Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year for the impressive performance. The 2003 season was also a banner year, as the Beavers advanced to the NCAA Men’s College Cup for the second straight season, hosted an opening-round game for the first time in program history and claimed a school-record 13 wins for the second year in a row. While 2004 was a rebuilding year, the 2005 Beavers set a school record with a 10-game unbeaten streak, and also won three consecutive games against ranked Pac-10 teams. During the 2007 campaign, Oregon State was just three points shy of a tie for second-place in the Pac-10 Conference standings. Along with putting a quality team on the pitch, Taylor believed

WARRIORATHLETICS.COM

his program needed to encompass the classroom, encourage service to the community and promote personal character, as well as excel competitively. The Beavers averaged 10 hours of community service per player in 2007. Prior to coming to OSU, Taylor served as an assistant coach at Creighton for four seasons, helping the team to a 63-17-6 record, two Missouri Valley Conference titles and a Final Four appearance in 1996. At Creighton, Taylor’s primary responsibility was working with the goalkeepers. The Bluejays had a 0.87 goals-against average and 35 shutouts in 86 games with Taylor on the coaching staff. During that time, Creighton won three MVC tournament titles to go with its two regular-season conference titles. The Bluejays reached the NCAA Tournament all four years, advancing to the

1996 Final Four, the 1997 second round and the 1998 quarterfinals. As a youth coach, Taylor’s squad won the U-23 Region II championship and finished second at the 1998 national finals. Taylor was the Nebraska State Soccer Association’s Director of Coaching and Player Development from 1993-95, overseeing all 25,000 players in the state. Prior to that, Taylor was the Colorado Springs Chargers Soccer Club’s Director of Coaching while also working as an assistant coach at Colorado College. In 1992, Taylor helped Colorado College to an 18-2-2 record, a No. 3 final regular-season ranking and a spot in the NCAA Division III Final Four. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation with a minor in personnel management from the United College of Barrington-Gordon, then located in Rhode Island, in 1985. While at the school, he was a four-year starter and a two-time National Christian College Athletic Association All-New England selection. Taylor, 46, and his wife, Lisa, have three sons: Brandon (19), Brady (15), and Bradlee (11). Brandon is on the golf team at Oregon State.

E-Mail: rjhiegert@goccaa.org Home: (925) 634-4838 The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. Student Recreation Complex MEN’S SOCCER • 2009 California State University, Stanislaus students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007 and the complex opened this fall in time for the soccer season. Sixty-eight percent of student voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the referendum and student body officer elections. “I am very pleased to see that students are so supportive of this project, because it will really be an asset to the University and the community,” California State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this University and contributes to physical education and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components. It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.” The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/ football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

CSU Stanislaus students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term starting in 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer. A unique feature of the project is the campus commitment that half of all donations and profits related to the facility will be directed toward reducing the student fee after the complex is opened. The other half of donations will go to athletic scholarships while the remaining half of profits generated by the facilities will be designated for future expansion and improvements of the complex. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved studentgenerated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities. “We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, STANISLAUS

The gymnasium took on the name, Warrior Arena, in 1999 — 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. The Arena is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Health and Physical Education. Warrior Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include the Student Recreation Complex, which features a soccer and track stadium, a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts. Both baseball and softball fields also feature batting cages. A full-size swimming pool is adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

Advising Program • F.Y.E. MEN’S SOCCER • 2009

Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determinaAMYE LEON tion and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct Academic Advisor interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consistently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU, Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

A Special program for first semester freshmen Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus.
