Call us home For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 studentto-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

2009-10 President’s Message

DR. HAMID SHIRVANI

University President California State University, Stanislaus

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking as one of the “Best 371 Colleges” in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the CCAA for the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Additionally, our athletes enjoy a graduation rate that is significantly higher than other NCAA Division II schools; 66.7 percent of CSU Stanislaus athletes graduate in six years compared to 55 percent of student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level nationwide. Our outstanding student-athletes and coaches continue to receive recognition for their many achievements. Pole vaulter Kasey Burlingham was the National Champion in Men’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf Coach John Cook was named West Region Coach of the Year, and over 40 of our athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors last year. Several Warrior graduates have gone on to succeed in athletics beyond their stellar performances here at CSU Stanislaus. Three of our baseball team’s players were drafted by Major League Baseball last spring, including Dakota Watts (16th Round, Minnesota Twins), Kyle Loretelli (38th Round, San Diego Padres), and Eric Federico (39th Round, Colorado Rockies). Joining our coaching staff this year are two Division I coaches with impressive records and the experience to take our men’s soccer and basketball teams to new

heights. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dana Taylor comes from Oregon State University, where he led his team to post-season appearances in the highly competitive Pac10 Conference. Larry Reynolds, Head Coach for Men’s Basketball, also has extensive Division I and II experience and has won several conference championships. The University is quite proud of this new 24-acre complex which features an all- weather track and soccer stadium with 2,100 seats, 18,500 square foot fitness center, and intramural sports fields. California State University, Stanislaus’ reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics continues to grow. I encourage you to build on the strength and momentum of the CSU Stanislaus Warriors by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding sports teams. Go Warriors!

Season Preview WOMEN’S SOCCER • 2009

Coming off a record breaking year, Warriors are back for more success The 2009 Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team will have plenty to live up to during the season, but all signs point to success for this year’s squad. The Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team is coming off a record breaking year offensively. The Warriors set new single-season marks in goals (44), assists (42), and points (130). In addition they were ranked as high as No. 23 in the nation and No. 3 in the West Region. “The 2008 season was good in many ways,” said Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer head coach Gabriel Bolton. “We continue to take steps towards playing an attractive attacking style of soccer. I also love how we competed with every team in the CCAA.” With a winning record in 2008, the Warriors women’s soccer team has now recorded winning seasons in seven of the last eight years. In 2009 expect to see more progress but some very different faces. That’s because the Warriors graduated seven seniors. Among the key losses are all-region first team defender Melissa Phillips and offensive points co-leader Adrienne Sorenson (now an assistant coach). Phillips was the anchor of an aggressive Warriors defensive line in ’08, while Sorenson was one of the Warriors’ many flashy forwards with speed and skill. Sorenson co-led the team in points with six goals and six assists. Phillips scored four goals and notched an assist last season for nine points as a defender. The new-look Warriors will be a very young squad with only 3 seniors. “We are young but our team continues to get faster and more athletic,” Bolton said. “This is going to be an exciting team to watch for years to come.” Making things even more exciting is the opening of the new Warrior Stadium. Set to open Aug. 23, with the brand new scoreboard to be installed Sept. 6, the 2,100-seat state-of-the-art facility promises to be one of the best in college soccer. “The team is very excited to play in our great new stadium,” said Bolton. “We are very fortunate to have this opportunity and plan on making the most of it.”

WARRIORATHLETICS.COM

The following is a position-by position preview: Goalkeeper The Warriors return two goalkeepers from last season. Senior Jessica Sitarz started all 19 games last season and posted a 1.09 Goals Against Average in more than 1,700 minutes between the posts. She is being challenged by redshirt freshman Millie Brown. Defense Phillips will be missed on the backline for the first time in four years. However, the Warriors are returning three starters from last year’s defense in right back Allison Freels, center back Vanessa Cervantes, and left back Jade Adamson. Cervantes is the lone returning Warrior besides goalkeeper Sitarz that started all 19 matches for the Warriors in 2008. Look for junior Heather Overholt to be a significant contributor in the defense in 2009. Others battling for starting position in the center of the defense will be sophomore Kayln Pottorff and two freshmen Holly Johnson and Apryl Whitney. Pottorff appeared in 15 games for the Warriors last season. At the outside defender spot, newcomers Hilary Callahan, Sierra Casas, Shelby Cargile and redshirt freshmen Emily Celey-Butlin will all compete for playing time. Midfield All-CCAA player Kim DiNardo returns

for her junior year as the team’s defensive midfielder. After starting 17 matches for the Warriors last season, she will have to hold off challenges from Alisa Barlow and Jessica Cordova, as all three look to contribute at that position. The attacking midfield positions will certainly have a new look as three-year starter Jenna Kasch graduated last year. The freshmen trio of Danielle Lovato, Bernadette Bettencourt, Alexia Poon should all see major playing time in the midfield. Sophomore Nichole Meyer and freshman Jen Thornton will also compete for playing time. Forward The Warriors are once again deep at forward despite the loss of key players at that position due to graduation. Sophomore speed burner Marissa Dunaway returns after leading the team and tying a freshman goals record with seven in the 2008 campaign. She also tied for the lead in points with Sorenson at 18. She is joined by junior standout Lisa Garcia, who spent most of her time in the midfield last year. Garcia scored a goal and had three assists last season for five points. Redshirt sophomore Maryanne Sayles returns after a four-goal performance last season. Also battling for playing time will be senior Alena Smajlagic, redshirt freshman Ashley McGuiness, and a group of true freshmen Taylor Waldon, Rachel Naranjo, Elle Porter and Angela Bell.

Student Recreation Complex WOMEN’S SOCCER • 2009 California State University, Stanislaus students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007 and the complex opened this fall in time for the soccer season. Sixty-eight percent of student voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the referendum and student body officer elections. “I am very pleased to see that students are so supportive of this project, because it will really be an asset to the University and the community,” California State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this University and contributes to physical education and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components. It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.” The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/ football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

34

CSU Stanislaus students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term starting in 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer. A unique feature of the project is the campus commitment that half of all donations and profits related to the facility will be directed toward reducing the student fee after the complex is opened. The other half of donations will go to athletic scholarships while the remaining half of profits generated by the facilities will be designated for future expansion and improvements of the complex. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved studentgenerated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities. “We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, STANISLAUS

Athletics Facilities WOMEN’S SOCCER • 2009

The gymnasium took on the name, Warrior Arena, in 1999 — 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. The Arena is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Health and Physical Education. Warrior Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include the Student Recreation Complex, which features a soccer and track stadium, a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts. Both baseball and softball fields also feature batting cages. A full-size swimming pool is adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

Warrior Athletics Tradition WOMEN’S SOCCER • 2009 California State University, Stanislaus fields 14 men’s and women’s athletics teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), having become a member in fall 1998. The University is affiliated nationally with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Division II. The Warriors have a winning tradition with over 250 student-athletes earning All-American honors since the program’s inception.

Carrie Luis won the 800- and 1,500meter runs in 1993 and 1994

The Warriors have been very competitive at the national level since moving up to NCAA Division II in 1989. Kasey Burlingham became the first individual national champion since 2005 when he captured the 2009 men’s track and field title in pole vault. The softball team advanced to the sub-regionals in the first season under the new postseason format while the men’s golf team finished sixth in the nation after a second place showing at the Super Regionals. In 2007-08, the baseball program set a team record in wins and advanced to the NCAA West Regional tournament for the first time as a Division II program. The softball team continued its success by winning the CCAA Tournament Championship on its way to another NCAA West Region tournament appearance. The Warrior women’s soccer team posted its best regular-season in 2005 with a 15-4-2 record. Behind the team’s

success, the University was rewarded as the CCAA Soccer Championship. In 2006-07, 11 of the 14 Warrior athletic teams posted winning records and Warrior student-athletes Graduated at a higher rate than the University studentbody while maintaining a B-plus grade point average. Two firsts occurred in 2006-07 for the Warriors as a Division II program with the men’s soccer team qualifying for the CCAA Championships for the first time after finishing second in the North Division. The softball program achieved the Elite status as it hosted and won the West Region and made its first ever appearance at the NCAA Championship tournament before finishing with a school record 50win season. programs turned in their best conference team finishes in 2006-07. The men’s golf team also enjoyed success, as it captured a CCAA championship in 2007 before continuing its postseason success both at the regional and national level. In the 2005 women’s track and field standout Chaunte Mitchell became the second athlete to repeat as a national champion, claiming the pole vault title in 2004 and 2005. It was the first time since Carrie Luis in 1993 and 1994 that a Warrior athlete won back-to-back national championships. Luis claimed a double national championship in the 800- and 1,500-meter races both years. During 14 years of competition at the NCAA Division III, level, California State University, Stanislaus won 12 national golf championships, two national baseball championships, and had both its men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the “Final Four” in the national tournaments. Other notable achievements for the Warriors include: • The women’s basketball program has made it to the NCAA tournament three times in the last 15 years including the team’s last appearance in 2003. • The women’s soccer program achieved its first national ranking in 2004 and finished with the team’s fourth 10-win season. • For the second time since 2005, the men’s basketball team defeated a Division I program when the Warriors beat Santa Clara in a 2007 preseason game. The Warriors also defeated UC Irvine in November, 2005. • Two-time CCAA Athlete of the Year Joel Stallworth competed at the 2008 World Indoor Track & Field Championships in Spain.

Advising Program • F.Y.E. WOMEN’S SOCCER • 2009

Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determinaAMYE LEON tion and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct Academic Advisor interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consistently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

A Special program for first semester freshmen Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus.
