Season Preview / Schedule Warriors aiming for rebound after modest 2009-10 season

By Chuun Sun The Turlock Journal (Nov. 16) Maybe the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team was just going through the motions of a developing program. The way last season went down, it wasn’t ideal. The Warriors didn’t make much noise in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, highlighted by the fact that they wrapped up the season with winning just one time in the final 10 games. To commence the 2010-11 season, the Warriors won’t have back a certain 6-foot-11 center from Puerto Rico until early December. Even so, second-year coach Larry Reynolds is already smiling. “I’m very anxious to get the year going,” he said. This season, he welcomes back six returners and a collection of junior college transfers who can be big-time contributors. One of them is Reggie Jones, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward who secured the California Community College Co-Player of the Year award after leading Ohlone College in Fremont to the State Tournament Elite Eight by scoring 14.5 points, grabbing 5.1 rebounds and collecting 1.8 blocks per game. Jones will be an ideal frontcourt replacement for Frank Monge, the tall Puerto Rican center who fractured his ankle twice this year, a streak of bad luck that included twisting it during a preseason practice. With Monge unable to return until early December, the Warriors are forced to start the regular season without a big-time presence in the middle. Cal State Stanislaus begins CCAA play

Head Coach LARRY REYNOLDS Head Coach Larry Reynolds, who has coached Division I and II championship teams at Long Beach State and Cal State San Bernardino, became the head coach of the men’s basketball program at California State University, Stanislaus, in June of 2009. In his first season at Cal State Stanislaus, he helped the team to 10 wins for the first time since 2006-07 with a 10-17 overall record. Reynolds compiled an impressive record as a head coach for 10 seasons after a number of years as an assistant coach at UC Riverside and the University of San Francisco. In five seasons at Long Beach State, he directed his teams to consecutive post-season playoff appearances from 2004-05 to 2006-07, including a Big West Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final year. Long Beach State rolled to a 24-8 record in 2006-07, and he was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year. At Division II Cal State San Bernardino, Reynolds’ teams rolled up a dazzling 110-35 record over five seasons and made four consecutive NCAA West Regional appearances. His clubs won three CCAA championships (1999-2002), two West Region titles, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight twice. At Cal State San Bernardino, after a 12-15 first season, Reynolds turned the program around to post a 23-8 season in 1998-99 and won the West Region in 1999. The team advanced as far as the NCAA Championship quarterfinals. CSUSB advanced to the 2001 West Regional title game and posted a 24-4 record that season. The following year, in 2002, Reynolds again led the Coyotes to an impressive 28-2 overall record before falling in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal game. Reynolds was named CCAA Conference Coach of the Year four times and National Association of Basketball Coaches District Eight Coach of the Year in 1998-99. From 1979 to 1995, Reynolds was an associate head coach at UC Riverside with John Masi. UCR won eight CCAA titles and made the NCAA tournament 10 times, including three Elite Eight appearances. In 1994, UCR advanced to the national championship game. During the 1995-96 and 96-97 seasons, Reynolds served as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco. Reynolds played at UC Riverside where he was a conference most valuable player in basketball. He graduated from UCR with a degree in urban studies in 1976 and earned his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1993.

Ben Riley joins the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball coaching staff for his second year in 2010-11. Riley brought a wealth of experience to the Warriors as both a coach and a player. Riley comes to CSUS after four years as head coach of the Lassen Community College men’s basketball squad. Riley led the team to a conference championship in 2007-08 and was named conference coach of the year for his and the team’s efforts. While at Lassen CC, Riley served for two years on the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association executive board as the Golden Valley Conference representative. Riley had a prolific playing career as a high-scoring shooter at Mendocino College in Ukiah, and at NAIA-member College of Idaho. He led his College of Idaho team to a total of 48 wins in two years and an appearance in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Riley set the single-season school record for 3-pointers by hitting 106 shots from behind the arc. At Mendocino College, Riley led all California community colleges with 27.3 points per game as a sophomore and set single season records in scoring with 763 points and in free-throws by making a 168. The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference.

On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). In 2010, Cal Poly Pomona captured the men’s basketball title. CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President ’s Message 2010-11 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking. CSU Stanislaus is the only CSU campus listed among Princeton Review’s “Best 373 Colleges” in the United States. Warrior fans also deserve applause for turning out in increasingly strong numbers. The new 24-acre Student Recreation Complex has helped attract fans to some great home games. Soccer alone had the strongest average attendance among Division II schools last year. Cheered on by loyal fans, the men’s soccer team tied a school record with 11 victories and Victor Regalado became the University’s first All-American in men’s soccer. Three other student-athletes were also declared All-American. Pole vaulter Annie Burlingham made the first-team selection in women’s pole vault. Golfers Brandon Taylor and Trevor Blair earned All-American status as they led the Warriors to another National Championship appearance. Two of our coaches were honored by their peers as they were named CCAA Coach of the Year: John Cook of Men’s Golf and Verek Visaraga of Women’s Tennis. Warrior athletes once again demonstrated that their ability to succeed is not limited to the field. Thirty-one CSU Stanislaus student athletes had GPAs of 3.4 or higher, which is one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. The spotlight on CSU Stanislaus athletics is only getting brighter as the University will host three major championship events this academic year. We will host the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in May, 2011. Two CCAA conference tournaments will be held on campus. The Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships will be held in November, 2010. The CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in May, 2011. The academic and athletic achievements of CSU Stanislaus’ student athletes are to be commended. I encourage you to show your support for these fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding teams. Go Warriors!

Athletics Administration Dr. Milton RICHARDS Director of Athletics

Dr. Milton E. Richards is in his 12th year as the Director of Athletics at California State University Stanislaus. He is guided by the belief that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the overall mission of the university and that a successful intercollegiate athletics and recreation program for men and women contributes substantially to campus life and community interaction. Dr. Richards and his staff have taken Warrior Athletics to new heights among the nation’s NCAA DII elite intercollegiate athletics programs. The goals for the Warrior Intercollegiate athletics program are: • To graduate Warrior student-athletes at a rate higher than the general student body. • To positively promote CSU Stanislaus through an intercollegiate athletics program that operates within the rules and regulations of the University, National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). • To be competitive and provide student-athletes with a positive intercollegiate athletics experience. Since his arrival in the spring of 1996, CSU Stanislaus student-athletes have continued to graduate at a rate higher than the general student body while maintaining a stellar 3.0 class room grade point average (G.P.A.) as a group. Other accomplishments by Dr. Richards, his coaches, student-athletes, and friends of the program during Richard’s tenure include: • More than 355 student-athletes have been named to all-conference, all-region, and All-American honors, as well as receiving accolades as all-academic student-athletes at various levels. • Twenty-four Warrior Athletics teams have participated in NCAA postseason play. • More than $6 million dollars has been secured in private funds for the Intercollegiate Athletics program. • Three separate student fee referendums have been passed by CSU Stanislaus students in support of the Athletics program, including the referendum for the recently completed $16 million state of the

Kim Duyst

art Student Recreation Complex and two additional referendums to support Warrior Athletics. Prior to joining CSU Stanislaus, Dr. Richards served as Director of Athletics at the State University of New York at Albany. In this capacity, Dr. Richards provided the needed leadership to move the UAlbany Intercollegiate Athletics program from NCAA DIII classification to NCAA Division I status. A native of Liverpool, New York, Dr. Richards worked in Division I-A athletics for 11 years at Kansas State University and Temple University. CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Commitment Statements

California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics became a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program in 2007-08. The mission of the NCAA is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education. Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

TUTORING AND STUDY HALL

A Special program for first semester freshmen

Academic tutoring is available through the Tutoring Center on campus. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor will also establish a regular study hall program for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor is available to monitor the progress of each student-athlete and to ensure his/her academic success. The Tutoring Center is available on a “drop-in” basis with peer tutors in specific subject areas. Student-athletes can make an appointment with a specific tutor to address a specific academic challenge that they face. Any student-athlete with a learning disability can receive assistance by utilizing the resources available at the CSU Stanislaus Counseling Center and Testing Services. All resources available at the counseling and testing centers are designed to assist all students with learning disabilities and to provide the appropriate tools or techniques to address the disability to assure success at the college level. The Athletic Advisor, departmental academic advisor or team head coach will assist you in utilizing these services in a confidential manner. The Athletics Department Student-Athlete Study Hall Program has been established to assist at-risk studentathletes to utilize appropriate study habits and time management skills to succeed in the classroom.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. ED & BERTHA FITZPATRICK ARENA Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena The arena on the campus of California State University Stanislaus is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as the Department of Kinesiology. On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. Fitzpatrick Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. Also in the Fall of 2009, the walk-way leading up to the Arena was named Hanny Way, in honor of Jim Hanny, who had been involved with CSU Stanislaus athletics since 1966. In 42 years of service at CSU Stanislaus, Hanny has served as the athletics director, chairman of physical education, coached basketball, golf, track & field, cross country and baseball. Hanny led the Warriors to 12 national championships and is a member of five different Athletics Halls of Fame. Adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center, is a full-size swimming pool. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, Warrior studentathletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

SRC & Athletics Facilities The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs. In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s Warrior Stadium & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and & AL Brenda Track the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts.

2010-11 CAL STATE STANISLAUS MEN’S BASKETBALL

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For nearly fifty years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our three student-athletes coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
