Call us home For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 studentto-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President’s Message SOFTBALL • 2010

2009-10 President’s Message

DR. HAMID SHIRVANI

University President California State University, Stanislaus

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking as one of the “Best 371 Colleges” in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the CCAA for the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Additionally, our athletes enjoy a graduation rate that is significantly higher than other NCAA Division II schools; 66.7 percent of CSU Stanislaus athletes graduate in six years compared to 55 percent of student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level nationwide. Our outstanding student-athletes and coaches continue to receive recognition for their many achievements. Pole vaulter Kasey Burlingham was the National Champion in Men’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf Coach John Cook was named West Region Coach of the Year, and over 40 of our athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors last year. Several Warrior graduates have gone on to succeed in athletics beyond their stellar performances here at CSU Stanislaus. Three of our baseball team’s players were drafted by Major League Baseball last spring, including Dakota Watts (16th Round, Minnesota Twins), Kyle Loretelli (38th Round, San Diego Padres), and Eric Federico (39th Round, Colorado Rockies). Joining our coaching staff this year are two Division I coaches with impressive records and the experience to take our men’s soccer and basketball teams to new

heights. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dana Taylor comes from Oregon State University, where he led his team to post-season appearances in the highly competitive Pac10 Conference. Larry Reynolds, Head Coach for Men’s Basketball, also has extensive Division I and II experience and has won several conference championships. The Student Recreation Complex is another enhancement and resource for students this year. The University is quite proud of this new 24-acre complex which features an all- weather track and soccer stadium with 2,100 seats, 18,500 square foot fitness center, and intramural sports fields. California State University, Stanislaus’ reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics continues to grow. I encourage you to build on the strength and momentum of the CSU Stanislaus Warriors by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding sports teams. Go Warriors!

Season Preview SOFTBALL • 2010

Warriors sport new-look with same goals of success in 2010 Coming off of an outstanding 2009 season, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team is ready to get back into the swing of things. The Warriors ended last season with a 35-21 overall record making it all the way to the Super Regionals with an amazing postseason run. The Warriors ended the year ranked No. 15 in the NFCA Top 25. Jan Schefkowitz, who is in her 18th season as head coach, is ready to see what this season has in store. Schefkowitz has recorded the second-highest winning percentage among softball coaches for the University in the past 25 years. In 2007 she brought the team to a whole new level as the Warriors won the NCAA West Regional championship and advanced to the NCAA National Championship tournament for the first time. With 17 years of coaching at CSU Stanislaus behind her, she uses her expertise and brings on former outstanding players, Jessica Gaumnitz and Alyssa Guzman, to assist her as team managers. “Well it’s a tough transition to go from teammate to coaching teammates but I think they are doing a great job,” said Schefkowitz. Schefkowitz and her staff — including assistant Paul Cavan and former player Jessica Scholl — have been preparing the Warriors for the upcoming games, but not without some difficulties. With the rainy month of January behind them they are hoping to get more practices outdoors on their newly resurfaced Warrior Softball Field, after spending much of the wet season with indoor batting practices. Schefkowitz is anxious to see what her team can do — especially with a handful of new players to the program. “I don’t know where we fall yet. The season is long and it’s a marathon not a sprint. We have goals for the end of the marathon and we just don’t know how close or how far we are from where we want to end up,” said Schefkowitz. There will be many appearent changes in the linep when the Warriors take the field on Feb. 3 against Academy of Art. The staff had the tough task of having to replace All-Region players Meghan Franksen and Gaumnitz, both completed their stellar four-year careers here last Spring. Also gone are three all-stars that used to roam the outfield — Guzman, Britney Borba and Kimiko Wright. WARRIORATHLETICS.COM

Schefkowitz is rebuilding her team and expects everyone to step up and contribute. Three true freshmen and three transfers are all in the mix with the returners to see significant playing time. “We are not trying to replace a graduating senior with a freshman, we are trying to have everyone step up from where they were last year,” said Schefkowitz. The Warriors will look to transfers Missy Corral  , who had two great seasons at Modesto Junior College, and Cassandra Carlos. Carlos returns to California after two years at Division I University of Maryland-Eastern Shores. “It’s all about doing the best you can and we will see where that gets us. I think Missy and C.C. bring a lot of experience with them and they are doing a good job sharing that with everyone else,” Schefkowitz said. “Our freshman transfer Sarah Locarnini is just doing a great job in learning our ways and getting the hang of everything,” she continued. “As for all the returnees, I expect them to be a year better then when they left last year and I think they have been and so I am looking forward to seeing what we look like in action.” The leaders, though, will be the core group of returners, and at the top of the list is All-Region pitcher and first baseman Jennifer Arnold. Arnold, who also earned All-CCAA second team honors, returns after posting a 13-9 record with a 2.54 ERA last spring. She batted .324 with seven homeruns and drove in 34 run during her junior season. Arnold is expected to be the game one starter before moving over to first in the second game. Senior infielder Erica McIntyre was second behind Arnold with a .323 batting

average and should again be a major part of the offense in 2010. Other key returning players are Nikky Rissetto, who will start at second base, and Brittany Balanesi. Balanesi will move out to the green as part of a newlook outfield. Rounding out the list of seniors is pitcher Stacey Hains, who could give the starters some innings off. “Our seniors historically have provided a lot of leadership so I am looking to all of them for that,” said Schefkowitz. Besides Balanesi, Carlos will roam centerfield, and Kiley Mendez — a true freshman from Los Banos — would start the year in right as part of the brand new outfield. Another true freshman tossed immediately into the circle will be Brittani Weatherford — an all-league pitcher from Stockton’s Lincoln High School who Schefkowitz expects to be the staff ace some day soon. When Schefkowitz was asked who the team to beat this season would be, her reply was, “Everyone in our conference is always tough, Humboldt (State), UC San Diego are always good, and CSU Monterey is the defending CCAA champion. There is nobody easy at all and there never has been.” Humboldt State, CCAA coaches’ preseason favor to win the conference, enters the year ranked No. 11 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Preseason Top 25. Schefkowitz and the team are all working towards the ultimate goal of returning to the national tournament, like the Warriors did in 2007. But Schefkowitz made it clear that it is going to take every single player on the squd to make the goal a reality. “That’s what we always want, to go to the national tournament. All the players need to make an impact; everyone has to contribute in order for the team to win, that has always been our formula for success,” said Schefkowitz. After the opening doubleheader against Academy of Art, the Warriors host the annual Best of the West Invitational, Feb. 5-7, at Pedretti Park. Stanislaus opens the California Collegiate Athletic Association season the following weekend against defending CCAA champion Cal State Monterey Bay. — Shannon Krein, SID Student Assistant

Head Coach SOFTBALL • 2010

JAN SCHEFKOWITZ Head Coach It’s hard to imagine, in the brisk, chill air that is so common to our valley this time of year, that a “warmer-weather climate” is what brought Head Softball Coach Jan Schefkowitz to Cal State Stanislaus 17 years ago. 2007 Entering her 18th season at the helm of the Warriors NFCA Softball program, Schefkowitz lends her impressive expertise.  West Region During her first six years at Cal State Stanislaus, she spent her Coaching time as both head coach for volleyball and softball. Since 1998, Staff of the Year Schefkowitz has been able to channel all her attention into her true love — softball — and has recorded the second-highest winning average among softball coaches for the University in the past 25 years. In 2007, she led the team to a new level, as the Warriors won the NCAA West Regional championship and advanced to the NCAA National Championship tournament for the first time. It was at the regional tournament at Warrior Field when the team elevated the program to new heights under the guidance of Schefkowitz. Her team defended home field to win the West and representing the region at the national tournament in Akron, Ohio, before bowing out with a semifinal loss to top-ranked Columbus State. When it was all said and done, the Warriors turned in the winningest season in history with a 50-20 mark. Schefkowitz and her assistants were named the NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Last season, Schefkowitz again led the Warriors to a NCAA Division II West Regional appearance — the program’s third consecutive trip and fifth over all — after winning the program’s first California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship. In 2006, the Warriors appeared in their third Regional appearance and went 2-2 in the tournament with an impressive upset win over San Francisco State to fend off elimination. The team also boasted its second All-American with outfielder Megan Law taking third-team honors, as well as the CCAA Freshman of the Year in Meghan Franksen. Schefkowitz was named Coach of the Year by her peers in the CCAA in 2000, after taking the Warriors to the NCAA Championship with a 44-20 record. She continued the team’s success in 2001 with another 40-win season and the team’s second postseason appearance. After graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in physical education from the State University of New York at Brockport, Schefkowitz obtained her master’s in physical education from San Francisco State while helping to lead the softball team to the AIAW Division III College World Series in 1981 as an assistant coach. She also made a coaching stop at Chicago State University before returning to New York to coach seven years at SUNY-Cortland, winning three conference championships and earning three coach-ofthe-year honors. In 1992, Schefkowitz found a home in the small but evergrowing city of Turlock. Schefkowitz was a four-sport varsity letter winner in high school. She also played on the San Jose Rainbows p r o f essional soft b a l l team.

CCAA Tournament

CHAMPS!

ARCATA (May 3, 2008) — Alyssa Guzman’s three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning finally ended Saturday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championships finale, lifting Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino and the CCAA title. Earning the CCAA’s automatic berth, the 19th ranked Warriors advance into Wednesday’s NCAA Division II West Region Championships with a 30-21 record. In the championships game, neither team could break through against clutch pitching. Cal State Stanislaus’ Jessica Gaumnitz was toughest of tough, pitching the last seven innings and giving up only one hit on her way to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Suffering the loss was Tawni Baker, who pitched five solid innings before allowing a single and walked in the 12th. She was relieved by Cassidy Lee, who had started the game and held the Warriors to one hit in her first four innings of work. Lee struck out the first hitter she faced, Jennifer Arnold, before being stung by Guzman’s decisive blast. Cal State Stanislaus took the lead in the bottom of the second on Casey Stephenson’s leadoff home run. Cal State San Bernardino tied the game in its next at-bats, putting runners on via a single and walk before Priscilla Curiel drove home Debbie Shisler with a single of her own. Gaumnitz, who went 3-0 in the tournament, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Jessica Scholl, Alicia Reid, Meghan Franksen, and Kimiko Wright were all named to the All-Tournament team. The Warriors beat Cal State San Bernardino, 6-1, to open the tournament two days earlier and handled Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-4, on Friday to advance to the title game. Gaumnitz allowed just three earned runs on six hits in 18 innings of work. She struckout 13 batters. Offensively for the Warriors, Wright went 6-for-12, Scholl was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs against CSUMB and Franksen played flawless defense. Alyssa Guzman was 3-for-9 with a pair of home runs during the tournament. The victory is the Warriors’ 17th consecutive win away from Turlock, and they are now 20-5 in road games. It was the team’s first conference championship.

2007 National Championship Tournament SOFTBALL • 2010

’07 Team lifted program to new heights after magical championship run The Warriors’ amazing, magical championship run ended when they spotted the top-ranked teams in the country two runs without a hit in the fourth inning and could not recover as Cal State Stanislaus dropped to No. 1 Columbus State, 7-1, at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Akron, Ohio, on May 19. With the loss, the Warriors end their tremendous run as a final six team in the national tournament. Cal State Stanislaus ended the year 50-20, a new school record, including a West Region championship and finished the year ranked No. 6. The Warriors may not have won the National Championship but what they accomplished in 2007 elevated the program to new heights. “I don’t think anyone on the team was sad (about being eliminated),” head coach Jan Schefkowitz said after the team lost to Columbus State. “We accomplished a lot and we did a lot when we got here. I am so proud of the team. We came to compete and we did that.” The team arrived in Akron full of energy and was poised to show the rest of country what West Coast softball and softball in the competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association was about. After the championship banquet, where centerfielder Megan Law received her second NFCA All-American award, the Warriors seemed eager to take the field at Firestone Stadium. However, they had to wait an entire day before facing Nebraska-Omaha in a night game. Casey Stephenson was the story of the night on May 17 when the junior designated player zoned in and belted two solo home runs

against the Mavericks. Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a six-hit shutout as the Warriors took game one, 3-0, over Nebraska-Omaha. Stephenson was later named to the All-Tournament team to cap-off her tremendous postseason. The next night, senior lefty Omaira Estremera pitched the game of her life against a powerful offensive team. She allowed just three hits and struck out five SIU Edwardsville hitters. The Warriors, however, stranded seven runners on base with five in scoring position and dropped the tight-game 1-0 to the eventual champions. Against top-ranked Columbus State, the Warriors uncharacteristically committed four errors and managed just two hits and were eliminated from the tournament after a 7-1 loss. “You can’t make errors at this level and we did and that started a cascade to other errors,” Schefkowitz said after the game. “However I think our players battled as well as they could. Columbus State is a great team and all of the teams here are great teams. You don’t survive when you make errors.” Warriors finished their first National championship appearance 1-2 in three games and was one-hit away from playing in the semifinal game. Now that the program has reached new heights, the Warriors have set their sights on a return trip to the national tournament, this time at the 2008 NCAA Spring Festival in Houston, Texas.

E-Mail: rjhiegert@goccaa.org Home: (925) 634-4838 The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division

II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 12th year as the Commissioner.

Carrie Luis won the 800- and 1,500meter runs in 1993 and 1994

The Warriors have been very competitive at the national level since moving up to NCAA Division II in 1989. Kasey Burlingham became the first individual national champion since 2005 when he captured the 2009 men’s track and field title in pole vault. The softball team advanced to the sub-regionals in the first season under the new postseason format while the men’s golf team finished sixth in the nation after a second place showing at the Super Regionals. In 2007-08, the baseball program set a team record in wins and advanced to the NCAA West Regional tournament for the first time as a Division II program. The softball team continued its success by winning the CCAA Tournament Championship on its way to another NCAA West Region tournament appearance. programs turned in their best conference team finishes in 2006-07. The men’s golf team also enjoyed success, as it captured a CCAA championship in 2007 before continuing its postseason success both at the regional and national level. In the 2005 women’s track and field standout Chaunte Mitchell became the second athlete to repeat as a national champion, claiming the pole vault title in 2004 and 2005. It was the first time since Carrie Luis in 1993 and 1994 that a Warrior athlete won back-to-back national championships. Luis claimed a double national championship in the 800- and 1,500-meter races both years. During 14 years of competition at the NCAA Division III, level, California State University, Stanislaus won 12 national golf championships, two national baseball championships, and had both its men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the “Final Four” in the national tournaments. Student Recreation Complex SOFTBALL • 2010 California State University, Stanislaus students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007 and the complex opened this fall in time for the soccer season. Sixty-eight percent of student voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the referendum and student body officer elections. “I am very pleased to see that students are so supportive of this project, because it will really be an asset to the University and the community,” California State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this University and contributes to physical education and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components. It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.” The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/ football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

52

CSU Stanislaus students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term starting in 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer. A unique feature of the project is the campus commitment that half of all donations and profits related to the facility will be directed toward reducing the student fee after the complex is opened. The other half of donations will go to athletic scholarships while the remaining half of profits generated by the facilities will be designated for future expansion and improvements of the complex. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved studentgenerated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities. “We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY STANISLAUS

Athletics Facilities SOFTBALL • 2010

The gymnasium took on the name, Warrior Arena, in 1999 — 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. The Arena is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Health and Physical Education. Warrior Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmosphere and vocal fan support. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include the Student Recreation Complex, which features a soccer and track stadium, a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts. Both baseball and softball fields also feature batting cages. A full-size swimming pool is adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

Advising Program/F.Y.E. SOFTBALL • 2010

Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determinaAMYE LEON tion and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct Academic Advisor interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consistently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU, Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

A Special program for first semester freshmen Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. First Year Experience for Athletes Only: All the World’s a Stage (or a Playing Field) THEA 1500 — Acting for Non-Theatre Majors (Dr. Mayer or Dr. O’Donnell) MDIS 1040 — Seminar in First Year Experience (Amye Leon)
