Season Outlook / Schedule With talented depth, Warriors get set to make a run for CCAA title The Warriors have reloaded after a tremendous 2009 season, when the team set numerous records, including tying the school’s best mark with 11 victories. Secondyear head coach Dana Taylor will have experienced players returning and have added great depth with a talented recruiting class. “We have nine returners coming back with an incredible amount of experience that we took from last year’s campaign,” Taylor said. “Our recruits have added depth in all areas of our team. Our goal is to take it one day at a time, learn each day as we strap on our boots and improve as individuals and collectively as a team.” In his first season, Taylor elevated the program to an 11-win season, matching the school record set in 1991, before Cal State Stanislaus joined the CCAA. Prior to Taylor’s arrival, the Warriors had only one winning season since 1998. The rest of the conference has taken notice as the head coaches projected a second place divisional finish for Stanislaus in 2010. The preseason poll also put the Warriors in the conference tournament and one head coach voted for the Warriors to win the conference tournament championship. “Our goal, like anyone else, to be in the postseason at the end of the season,” said Taylor. “However, our focus is to remain in the present. We have no control over outcomes. We must understand our roles and how this affects out team.” The postseason could start at home for the Warriors as Cal State Stanislaus was selected to host the CCAA conference tournament (Nov. 5-7 at Warrior Stadium) for the second straight year. Before the Warriors can get that far, it will have to endure another tough schedule, starting with a non-conference contest versus regional foe Western Washington to open the home schedule on Sept. 4. As part of the grueling CCAA schedule, the Warriors will face four preseason Top 25 teams in Cal State Dominguez Hills (#6), Cal State L.A. (#12), Sonoma State (#22) and Cal State San Bernardino (#25). An advantage for the Warriors is that they will face four of the five Southern California teams, including three ranked programs, at Warrior Stadium. Stanislaus posted an impressive 8-1-1 record at home last season.

Regalado netted school-record 13 goals and scored 28 points in just 13 games in 2009 en route to being named as CCAA’s most valuable offensive player of the year. “I’m not trying to meet the same goals as I did last year,” Regalado had told a local sports writer after the first day of practice. “I’m just trying to take it a game at a time. Head Coach DANA TAYLOR Head Coach Dana Taylor started a new era of men’s soccer at Cal State Stanislaus when took over the helm of the program for his first season in 2009. Taylor came to the Warriors from Division I Pac-10 Conference power Oregon State with a wealth of collegiate coaching experience. In his first season at Cal State Stanislaus, he led the Warriors to a second place finish in the CCAA North Division. The Warriors were 11-6-2 overall and 8-6-2 in conference play. During the course of the season, the Warriors set a new CCAA-era (since 1998) record in assists (26) and broke the 11-year-old team points record (86) with 88 points in 2009. The Warriors were also ranked in the top-half of the conference in shots (295), total assists and assists per game (1.37). Taylor also coached the program’s first All-American player in Victor Regalado, who was also named the CCAA’s most valuable offensive player for 2009. Cal State Stanislaus was also the national leader in home game attendance. The men’s team averaged 888, having drawn 8,879 spectators. Both numbers rank No. 1 in NCAA Division II. Over the course of his coaching career at Oregon State and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., 22 of Taylor’s players have moved on to play professionally. While at Oregon State, Taylor’s teams did well in the classroom, regularly posting grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Players earned conference academic honors 58 times, including 12 in 2006, 10 in ‘07 and seven in ‘08) and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American status on three occasions. Taylor’s squads had a 10-year record of 79-98-14 with Oregon State. In his 10 years at Oregon State, Taylor’s players were recognized as allconference athletes 46 times and as all-region 11 times. Danny Mwanga received Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors in 2008. Alan Gordon earned All-American honors in 2003 and Joe Zaher was a Freshman All-American in 2002. Taylor holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America advanced national diploma. He has been a national staff instructor, coaching USSF national courses as well as being part of the national goalkeeping staff. The 2002 Oregon State team won a school-record 13 games and made its firstever NCAA Tournament appearance. Taylor was named the Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year for the impressive performance. The 2003 season was also a banner year, as the Beavers advanced to the NCAA Men’s College Cup for the second straight season, hosted an opening-round game for the first time in program history and claimed a school-record 13 wins for the second year in a row.

4

While 2004 was a rebuilding year, the 2005 Beavers set a school record with a 10-game unbeaten streak, and also won three consecutive games against ranked Pac-10 teams. During the 2007 campaign, Oregon State was just three points shy of a tie for second-place in the Pac-10 Conference standings. Along with putting a quality team on the pitch, Taylor believed his program needed to encompass the classroom, encourage service to the community and promote personal character, as well as excel competitively. The Beavers averaged 10 hours of community service per player in 2007. Prior to coming to OSU, Taylor served as an assistant coach at Creighton for four seasons, helping the team to a 63-17-6 record, two Missouri Valley Conference titles and a Final Four appearance in 1996. At Creighton, Taylor’s primary responsibility was working with the goalkeepers. The Bluejays had a 0.87 goals-against average and 35 shutouts in 86 games with Taylor on the coaching staff. During that time, Creighton won three MVC tournament titles to go with its two regularseason conference titles. The Bluejays reached the NCAA Tournament all four years, advancing to the 1996 Final Four, the 1997 second round and the 1998 quarterfinals. As a youth coach, Taylor’s squad won the U-23 Region II championship and finished second at the 1998 national finals. Taylor was the Nebraska State Soccer Association’s Director of Coaching and Player Development from 199395, overseeing all 25,000 players in the state. Prior to that, Taylor was the Colorado Springs Chargers Soccer Club’s Director of Coaching while also working as an assistant coach at Colorado College. In 1992, Taylor helped Colorado College to an 18-2-2 record, a No. 3 final regular-season ranking and a spot in the NCAA Division III Final Four. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation with a minor in personnel management from the United College of Barrington-Gordon, then located in Rhode Island, in 1985. While at the school, he was a four-year starter and a two-time National Christian College Athletic Association All-New England selection. Taylor, 46, and his wife, Lisa, have three sons: Brandon (19), Brady (15), and Bradlee (11). Brandon was an All-Region player on the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team in 2010.

2009 Season Review Soccer Program Enjoys Many Successes In 2009 The Cal State Stanislaus men’s soccer program may not be new, having been around for more than three decades, but with all the new things around it, the 2009 squad might as well have been an expansion team. The astounding thing, however, is that the team didn’t play the season like it was new, piecing together one of the best seasons ever in the program’s history under first-year head coach Dana Taylor. Individual and team records fell and the Warriors took the entire California Collegiate Athletic Association by surprise as they marched to an 11-6-2 record and a secondplace finish in the CCAA North Division with an 8-6-2 mark. The new 2,100-seat Warrior Stadium brought some of the largest crowds Cal State Stanislaus and the CCAA has ever seen for soccer. The Warriors set the CCAA men’s soccer attendance record of 888 fans averaged per game, and a total of 8,879 fans for the season — both top numbers in NCAA Division II during the 2009 season. Those crowds were sure to have helped, as the team finished with its best-ever home record since joining the CCAA in 1998 with an 8-1-1 mark. An incredible 1,796 fans watched the men defeat UC San Diego, 2-1, on Sept. 18. Overall, 2009 was the Warriors’ winningest season during the CCAA era. It was the team’s first 10-plus-win season during the CCAA era, and it was its winningest season overall, since 1991 when that team went 115-1. The team set CCAA-era record in assists (26) and broke the 11-year-old team points record (86) with 88 points in 2009. The Warriors were also ranked in the top-half of the conference in shots (295), total assists and assists per game (1.37). The Warriors also spent time on the NSCAA Far West Region poll for six weeks, peaking out at No. 6 by the end of the regular season. Junior forward Victor Regalado became one of the most exciting players in the CCAA, setting individual records and bringing home the program’s first conference most valuable offensive player of the year award in 16 years. Regalado led the conference in goals scored and led all players in points per game (1.75), goals per game (0.81) and game-winning goals (6). Regalado played in at least two less con-

14

ference games (13) than most of the other leaders and still led the CCAA in points (20), goals (9), points per game (1.54) and goals per game (0.69) during conference games. Regalado set new school single-season records for goals with 13 and points with 28. His single-season goals total has already placed him at No. 2 on the Warriors’ career list for goals, trailing Dennis Wolfe’s 14 scores from 2003 and 2005-07. He is just five points away from setting the CSUS career record in points, sitting in third right now behind Tony Amaral (33 points, 2002-05) and Wolfe (30 points). Regalado ranked among the top 10 CCAA players in six offensive categories, including leading the conference in goals scored, goals per game (0.81) and points per game (1.75). For all of his accomplishments, Regalado receive national and regional recognition. He became the first Warrior to be named to the NSCAA All-America team. He was also named to both the NSCAA and Daktronics all-West Region teams. Regalado is the program’s first first team all-region player since Albert Martins earned the NSCAA All-Far West Region honors in 2005. Joining Regalado with all-conference honors in 2009 was Warrior freshman midfielder Edgar Santana, who got a secondteam nod, and sophomore goalkeeper Javier Rosales, who received honorable mention. Santana finished the season with four goals and three assists for 11 points in playing a key roll at midfield and forward. The freshman also had two game-winning goals for the Warriors. He was among the top five in shots taken with 58. Rosales finished the season strong to earn CCAA Honorable Mention accolades after splitting time with freshman goalkeeper

Steven Waite through the early part of the year and ended up having one of the best seasons ever as a goalkeeper at Cal State Stanislaus. Rosales would go on to set a new CSUS single-season record for saves percentage with a .819 clip. He cut his goals against average in half from 2008, going from 2.03 last year to 1.00 this season, which also set a new single-season record for Cal State Stanislaus. The sophomore Rosales had 59 saves and four shutouts in 2009, which move his career totals in both categories to the top three in the at Cal State Stanislaus. His career 140 saves are third behind Jose “Mando” Herrera (2004-07, 287) and Matt Buckman (2001-02, 146). His seven career shutouts are second behind Herrera (20). The Warriors marched through the CCAA North Division after being selected to finish second-to-last in the CCAA preseason coaches’ poll. They went 5-3-2 against CCAA North opponents, including a 1-0 upset over thenNo. 8 Sonoma State at Warrior Stadium on Oct. 25. It was the Warriors’ first victory over the Seawolves in four years. The Warriors split their six games against CCAA South Division opponents in 2009, going 3-3, with all three losses coming against teams who qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament. Speaking of the CCAA Championship Tournament, Cal State Stanislaus played host to the conference’s best Nov. 6-8 with the men and women’s CCAA soccer title on the line. E-Mail: rjhiegert@goccaa.org Home: (925) 634-4838 The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference.

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Location. Location. Location.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President ’s Message 2010-11 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking. CSU Stanislaus is the only CSU campus listed among Princeton Review’s “Best 373 Colleges” in the United States. Warrior fans also deserve applause for turning out in increasingly strong numbers. The new 24-acre Student Recreation Complex has helped attract fans to some great home games. Soccer alone had the strongest average attendance among Division II schools last year. Cheered on by loyal fans, the men’s soccer team tied a school record with 11 victories and Victor Regalado became the University’s first All-American in men’s soccer. Three other student-athletes were also declared All-American. Pole vaulter Annie Burlingham made the first-team selection in women’s pole vault. Golfers Brandon Taylor and Trevor Blair earned All-American status as they led the Warriors to another National Championship appearance. Two of our coaches were honored by their peers as they were named CCAA Coach of the Year: John Cook of Men’s Golf and Verek Visaraga of Women’s Tennis. Warrior athletes once again demonstrated that their ability to succeed is not limited to the field. Thirty-one CSU Stanislaus student athletes had GPAs of 3.4 or higher, which is one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. The spotlight on CSU Stanislaus athletics is only getting brighter as the University will host three major championship events this academic year. We will host the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in May, 2011. Two CCAA conference tournaments will be held on campus. The Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships will be held in November, 2010. The CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in May, 2011. The academic and athletic achievements of CSU Stanislaus’ student athletes are to be commended. I encourage you to show your support for these fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding teams. Go Warriors!

Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

TUTORING AND STUDY HALL

A Special program for first semester freshmen

Academic tutoring is available through the Tutoring Center on campus. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor will also establish a regular study hall program for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor is available to monitor the progress of each student-athlete and to ensure his/her academic success. The Tutoring Center is available on a “drop-in” basis with peer tutors in specific subject areas. Student-athletes can make an appointment with a specific tutor to address a specific academic challenge that they face. Any student-athlete with a learning disability can receive assistance by utilizing the resources available at the CSU Stanislaus Counseling Center and Testing Services. All resources available at the counseling and testing centers are designed to assist all students with learning disabilities and to provide the appropriate tools or techniques to address the disability to assure success at the college level. The Athletic Advisor, departmental academic advisor or team head coach will assist you in utilizing these services in a confidential manner. The Athletics Department Student-Athlete Study Hall Program has been established to assist at-risk studentathletes to utilize appropriate study habits and time management skills to succeed in the classroom.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. Student Recreation Complex The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities.

“We are very grateful Warrior Stadium to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational.

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For nearly fifty years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our three student-athletes coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
