Season Preview Warriors return experience, welcome new talent in 2011 Dana Taylor is entering his third season as the head coach of the Cal State Stanislaus men’s soccer team. In 2009, he left a Division I power for Turlock, in hopes of taking the Warriors toward national prominence. He’s getting there. The third season started on Aug. 15, and after three practices, Taylor said this year’s squad is ahead of last year’s. But he’s not in a rush to make predications, though he returns nine starters and welcomes a batch of eager and talented newcomers, including recent high school graduates from the Turlock area in forward Jose Barajas (Turlock) and midfielder Paul Oei (Denair). “It’s too early to tell,” he said, “but we’re stronger.” The first real indicator of this season was on Aug. 19, when the Warriors played a scrimmage at Sacramento State. The Warriors took a 1-0 victory over the Hornets on a late goal by Arturo Pulido. The scrimmage, Taylor said, allowed the newcomers and the other unproven talent a chance to shine. “I think they’re all making an impact. It’s just to what degree,” Taylor added about the new guys. “Do they start? Do they come in as subs? Do they travel? And that’s what (practices) are all about.” The Warriors begin the regular season on Sept. 2, when they host Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. Making this Warriors team won’t be an easy task. Since Taylor took over two years ago, they’ve notched two consecutive winning seasons, including a 10-5-3 record in 2010. That year, they finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division, narrowly missing the conference tournament. Entering this season, the Warriors boast a recruiting class with talent from across California and Oregon and from nationally recognized club teams. They also introduce a new assistant coach in Morgan Cathey, who has played and coached at the professional level. With that kind of team makeover, the War-

2

riors have high expectations for themselves. “We have a lot of new guys who are ready to play at this level,” said defender Trevor Grimbleby, referring to a group of 15 freshmen and one transfer. “There’s no need to build them up. They’re ready to go in and play. That’ll help us with a lot of depth.” The Warriors also welcome back nine seniors, indicating that this group has the experience to move forward with the goal of capturing the conference title. TJ Grewal is one of them, as he’s coming off a season in which the defender earned second-team all-conference honors. “Like Coach said, ‘Every year, we get better and better,’ ” Grewal said. “Anyone can play at anytime. We don’t have to worry about not having someone starting and to fill spots.” Goalkeepers Seniors Javier Rosales and Bill Hambelton will man the net this season. Rosales returns after his most successful season statistically in 2010 with a 0.99 GAA and five shutouts in 11 matches. Hambelton, however, was the go-to man late in the season before ending the year with three shutouts and a 1.02 GAA in eight contests.

Forwards The returning front line that included returners Jose Velazquez, Juan Alvarez and Manny Avila(combied with five goals in 2010) will certainly be challenged by the newcomers. Freshmen Daniel Kuczynski, who was born in Poland and now hails from the Toronto, Ont. area, and local product Barajas figure in the Warrior Attack. Midfielders Controlling the tempo in the middle of the field will be a group of veterans mixed with skilled newbies. Both Pulido and Luis Guzman were key players a year ago. In 2011, however, the depth now also includes England’s Brandon James and Central Valley standouts Josh Handley (Modesto JC), Paul Oei (Denair HS) and Julian O’Dell (St. Mary’s HS, Stockton), just to name a few. Defenders The strength of the team will once again be on defense. Anchored by Grimbleby, the solid backline also includes experienced players in Grewal, Nolan Holdridge, Schad TenBroeck and Kyle Cadigan. This unit helped led the team to eight shutouts in 2010 — a new team record. Opponents managed to score just 19 goals in 18 matches last season.

Head Coach DANA TAYLOR Head Coach Dana Taylor started a new era of men’s soccer at Cal State Stanislaus when took over the helm of the program for his first season in 2009. Taylor came to the Warriors from Division I Pac-10 Conference power Oregon State with a wealth of collegiate coaching experience. In just two short seasons at Cal State Stanislaus, Taylor has elevated the program to another level. The Warriors posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history. Taylor, who was 20-11-6 in two seasons, is the only winning coach in the history of the program. During the course of the 2009 season, the Warriors set a new CCAA-era (since 1998) record in assists (26) and broke the 11-year-old team points record (86) with 88 points in 2009. The Warriors were also ranked in the top-half of the conference in shots (295), total assists and assists per game (1.37). Taylor also coached the program’s first All-American player in Victor Regalado, who was also named the CCAA’s most valuable offensive player for 2009. Cal State Stanislaus was also the national leader in home game attendance. The men’s team averaged 888, having drawn 8,879 spectators. Both numbers rank No. 1 in NCAA Division II. In 2010, the team established team single-single records in assists, points, shutouts and goals-against-average. Over the course of his coaching career at Oregon State and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., 22 of Taylor’s players have moved on to play professionally. While at Oregon State, Taylor’s teams did well in the classroom, regularly posting grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Players earned conference academic honors 58 times, including 12 in 2006, 10 in ‘07 and seven in ‘08) and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American status on three occasions. Taylor’s squads had a 10-year record of 79-98-14 with Oregon State. In his 10 years at Oregon State, Taylor’s players were recognized as all-conference athletes 46 times and as all-region 11 times. Danny Mwanga received Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors in 2008. Alan Gordon earned All-American honors in 2003 and Joe Zaher was a Freshman All-American in 2002. Taylor holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America advanced national diploma. He has been a national staff instructor, coaching USSF national courses as well as being part of the national goalkeeping staff. The 2002 Oregon State team won a school-record 13 games and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Taylor was named the Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year for the impressive performance. The 2003 season was also a banner year, as the Beavers advanced to the NCAA Men’s College Cup for the second straight season, hosted an opening-round game for the first time in program history and claimed a school-record 13 wins for the second year in a row. While 2004 was a rebuilding year, the 2005 Beavers set a school record with a 10-game unbeaten streak, and also won three consecutive games against ranked Pac-10 teams. During the 2007 campaign,

4

Oregon State was just three points shy of a tie for second-place in the Pac-10 Conference standings. Along with putting a quality team on the pitch, Taylor believed his program needed to encompass the classroom, encourage service to the community and promote personal character, as well as excel competitively. The Beavers averaged 10 hours of community service per player in 2007. Prior to coming to OSU, Taylor served as an assistant coach at Creighton for four seasons, helping the team to a 63-17-6 record, two Missouri Valley Conference titles and a Final Four appearance in 1996. At Creighton, Taylor’s primary responsibility was working with the goalkeepers. The Bluejays had a 0.87 goals-against average and 35 shutouts in 86 games with Taylor on the coaching staff. During that time, Creighton won three MVC tournament titles to go with its two regular-season conference titles. The Bluejays reached the NCAA Tournament all four years, advancing to the 1996 Final Four, the 1997 second round and the 1998 quarterfinals. As a youth coach, Taylor’s squad won the U-23 Region II championship and finished second at the 1998 national finals. Taylor was the Nebraska State Soccer Association’s Director of Coaching and Player Development from 1993-95, overseeing all 25,000 players in the state. Prior to that, Taylor was the Colorado Springs Chargers Soccer Club’s Director of Coaching while also working as an assistant coach at Colorado College. In 1992, Taylor helped Colorado College to an 18-2-2 record, a No. 3 final regular-season ranking and a spot in the NCAA Division III Final Four. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation with a minor in personnel management from the United College of Barrington-Gordon, then located in Rhode Island, in 1985. While at the school, he was a four-year starter and a two-time National Christian College Athletic Association All-New England selection. Taylor, 46, and his wife, Lisa, have three sons: Brandon (19), Brady (15), and Bradlee (11). Brandon was a member of the Cal State Stanislaus golf team. He was an All-Region player in 2010.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very

For the sixth consecutive year, CSU Stanislaus is featured in the 2012 edition of the prestigious college guide “The Best 376 Colleges.” CSU Stanislaus is one of only two California State University campuses to receive this honor, and the only one to receive the recognition for six-straight years. Additionally, The Princeton Review recognized CSU Stanislaus as one of the best colleges in the West in its website feature, “2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region,” posted August 1, 2011, on www.PrincetonReview.com. This is Cal State Stanislaus Student life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President ’s Message 2011-12 President’s message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am delighted to welcome you to California State University, Stanislaus and another year of Warrior Athletics. Once again, the success of our student athletes on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the university’s reputation for excellence and its sixth-straight annual recognition in the Princeton Review’s listing of Best Colleges in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is very proud to be the only CSU campus to receive this honor for six consecutive years. In 2010-11, we had the pleasure of hosting three major championships: the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) soccer championships and the Track & Field conference championships. CSU Stanislaus is truly honored to have hosted these events and welcomed thousands of student-athletes and families from around the country to our campus. Our Warrior Athletics teams and student-athletes continue to rank highly in the state and country. Our women’s soccer team recently participated in the CCAA championship tournament. In addition, two of our student athletes qualified for the NCAA track nationals, and seven were honored as NCAA All Americans. However, Warrior success is not limited to athletics competitions—our student athletes also continue to realize success in their academic pursuits. Thirty-five student athletes had a grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or higher, one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. Thank you again for your interest in Warrior Athletics. I encourage you to visit our beautiful campus and encourage our fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our teams. Go Warriors!

Athletics Administration DR. mIlTon RICHARDS Director of Athletics

Dr. Milton E. Richards is in his 13th year as the Director of Athletics at California State University Stanislaus. He is guided by the belief that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the overall mission of the university and that a successful intercollegiate athletics and recreation program for men and women contributes substantially to campus life and community interaction. Dr. Richards and his staff have taken Warrior Athletics to new heights among the nation’s NCAA DII elite intercollegiate athletics programs. The goals for the Warrior Intercollegiate athletics program are: • To graduate Warrior student-athletes at a rate higher than the general student body. • To positively promote CSU Stanislaus through an intercollegiate athletics program that operates within the rules and regulations of the University, National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). • To be competitive and provide student-athletes with a positive intercollegiate athletics experience. Since his arrival in the spring of 1996, CSU Stanislaus student-athletes have continued to graduate at a rate higher than the general student body while maintaining a stellar 3.0 class room grade point average (G.P.A.) as a group. Other accomplishments by Dr. Richards, his coaches, student-athletes, and friends of the program during Richard’s tenure include: • More than 400 student-athletes have been named to all-conference, all-region, and All-American honors, as well as receiving accolades as all-academic student-athletes at various levels. • Twenty-four Warrior Athletics teams have participated in NCAA postseason play. • More than $ 6.5 million dollars has been secured in private funds for the Intercollegiate Athletics program. •Three separate student fee referendums have been passed by CSU Stanislaus students in support of the Athletics program, including the referendum for the recently completed $16 million state of the art Student Recreation Complex and two additional referendums to supportWarrior Athletics.

KIm DUYST UYST

Prior to joining CSU Stanislaus, Dr. Richards served as Director of Athletics at the State University of New York at Albany. In this capacity, Dr. Richards provided the needed leadership to move the UAlbany Intercollegiate Athletics program from NCAA DIII classification to NCAA Division I status. A native of Liverpool, New York, Dr. Richards worked in Division I-A athletics for 11 years at Kansas State University and Temple University. As Director of Athletics at Kansas State, Dr. Richards was responsible for an athletics program which totaled 14 sports with an $8.5 million budget. Under his leadership the program reached new heights in Athletic Fund Raising. From 1982-91, Dr. Richards enjoyed a nine-year association with Temple University, a Division IA institution in Philadelphia. He spent six of those years as Associate Athletics Director, a position that included the job of Chief Financial Officer. In that role, he managed all of the administrative and operational aspects for the Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. At Temple University Dr Richards also served an adjunct faculty member for the Temple University College of Education teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in education administration. Dr. Richards is completing a second five-year term as a member of the West Virginia University School of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences President’s Visiting Committee. The Visiting Committee is in an advisory Board established to provide input to WVU President James Clements and College Dean Dana Brooks, on all matters related to the School of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. Dr. Richards was elected to the West Virginia University Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009 and earned three degrees from WVU, including an Ed.D (1983), a MS. (1982), and a BS. (1980). He has authored several articles on issues related to intercollegiate athletics. Dr. Richards is the father of two children, Milton Chase, and Megan Brittany, both graduates of WVU. He is married to former CSU Stanislaus Hall of Fame student-athlete Amy Bublak, who is law enforcement officer with the Modesto Police Department. Dr Richards and his wife Amy are very involved in the Turlock community. He was elected President of the Stanislaus County Mosquito Abatement District, serves on the Board of Directors for the Turlock Chamber of Commerce and is member of the Rotary Club of Turlock. Ms. Bublak is an elected member of the Turlock City Council, served on the Turlock City Planning Commission, and is President of the Stanislaus County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The couple resides in Turlock.

SAAC / CHAMPS Life Skills Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The mission of the California State University Stanislaus Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting studentathlete welfare, maintaining athletics integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administration and fostering a positive student-athlete image. SAAC is also very active in community activities including raising money for the NCAA Division II sponsored Make-A-Wish Foundation annual fund drive. The Warriors led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in fund raising for Make-A-Wish six out of the last seven years, including four consecutive years from 2004 to 2008. In 2009-10, the Warriors raised $5,064.92 — nearly $1,400 more than the second place finisher. Last year, Stanislaus tops the list again with $5,800 raised. In 2008, SAAC was involved with a campus community engagement project, Henry’s March, benefiting the Children’s Craniofacial Association. Working with event organizers and coordinated by Associate A.D. Kim Duyst, SAAC helped Henry’s March raised more than $25,000 for the C.A.A. SAAC committee members were also actively involved with workshops through the conference office as well as the CCAA Sportsmanship Workshop. They present Faculty Appreciation Awards at our annual athletic banquet. For its efforts in 2007-08 and 2010-11, SAAC won the Cal State Stanislaus Outstanding Student Organization Leadership Award. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Interim Director of Retention and Advising Fernando Beltran, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Student Recreation Complex The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step forward with the addition of the new facilities.

Warrior Stadium “We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their overwhelming support of this project,” Richards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.” In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility hosted three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational.

On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts.

2011 CAL STATE STANISLAUS MEN’S SOCCER

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For 54 years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our the student-athletes, coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
