Season Outlook / Schedule

Youthful, energetic team seeks positive results in 2011 Last season is history. Head coach Jan Schefkowitz and the Warriors are burying last season’s record and starting fresh in 2011. The new team’s personality: young and energetic. The 2011 squad will feature 13 lower classmen with seven freshmen and six sophomores to go with just two seniors and a junior. There a few key returners to the Warriors roster this year. Sophomore starting pitcher Brittani Weatherford returns to the mound as the Warriors number one hurler. Weatherford finished last year with a 7-19 record, with 16 complete games. Weatherford posted a 4.54 earned run average and led her team with 109 strikeouts. This upcoming season Schefkowitz will be looking for more confidence and better command by Weatherford. “I hope to see better poise on the mound,” explains Schefkowitz. Sarah Locarnini led the team with the bat last season and the Warriors are hoping she can carry that on and be a more consistant hitter in this upcoming season. Locarnini, who will start at shortstop, led Stanislaus with a .395 batting average and she was 18-for-25 in stolen bases. Her single season batting average already ranks her second in the CSUS all-time list. Only two-time All-American Megan Law had a better batting average in a season (.431 in 2006). “In her position, she must be a bigger leader for her team. Both offensively and defensively,” says schefkowitz. Locarnini will have to take charge of the infield as the only returning infielder. Freshman Brittney Rickles will be her middle-infield partner while two sophomore tranfers are guarding the corners at the start of the season. Catcher Missy Corral is one of two seniors on this year’s team. She led her team last year at the plate with 11 doubles and 28 RBI’s. “ Corral is a different kind of leader, she works well with the pitching staff and the pitchers have confidence that she will be a wall behind the plate,” said Schefkowitz. Junior centerfielder, Brittany Balanesi and senior Veronica Luna are the only two

2

Warriors who have been to the postseason. In 2008, they were part of the team that made it to the super regionals in St. George, Utah. “Balanesi has made great strides and as a junior I expect this to be a breakout year for her,“ comments schefkowitz. Nicole Jenkins and Kiley Mendez are two of the other returners from the 2010 team. Both young players and the team hopes to see them to grow as stronger players this year as well, Jenkins on the infield and Mendez as an outfielder. The biggest thing to remember according to Schefkowitz is for her young team to stay poised at all times. “They must focus on what they know and stay focused on the goal of being excellent. The young players need to strive to be consistant, keep mental focus, and have passion for the game,” says the 19th-year head coach. Freshman Kristan Burns will be sharing the pitching circle with Weatherford. Schefkowitz feels she has a great opportunity to be a strong pitcher and hitter for the Warriors. Strong hitters is something that Schefkowitz feels they do not lack. Lauren Nagle, a freshmen from San Diego, Vanessa Del Toro, a sophomore from Stockton, and Jordan Flora, a sophomore from Modesto will all be looked at to succeed with a bat in hand. “Nagle and Flora are both strong hitters and Del Toro has a lot of presence with the bat,” explains Schefkowitz. “Brieanna Stone also has a nose for the ball and she just seems to get it done.” Defensively, two of the top newcomers are freshmen Laura Ginns and Rickles. Ginns will be starting in the outfield while Rickles will be the starting second base for the Warriors. Kaitlin Goulart, a freshmen infielder from Turlock, and Alyssa Coelho, another freshmen from Hughson are also on the squad this season. When asked how well her young team will do in a such a tough conference, Schefkowitz responded that “who they play is never as important as how they play. We always expect our opponents to pitch, hit, and field well.” The Warriors’ goal as a team is to

Head Coach JAN SCHEFKOWITZ Head Coach

It’s hard to imagine, in the brisk, chill air that is so common to our valley this time of year, that a “warmer-weather climate” is what brought Head Softball Coach Jan Schefkowitz to Cal State Stanislaus in 1992. Entering her 19th season at the helm of the Warriors Softball 2007 program, Schefkowitz lends her impressive expertise.  During her first six NFCA West Region years at Cal State Stanislaus, she spent her time as both head coach for Coaching volleyball and softball. Since 1998, Schefkowitz has been able to channel all Staff of the Year her attention into her true love — softball — and has recorded the secondhighest winning average among softball coaches for the University in the past 25 years. In 2007, she led the team to a new level, as the Warriors won the NCAA West Regional championship and advanced to the NCAA National Championship tournament for the first time. It was at the regional tournament at Warrior Field when the team elevated the program to new heights under the guidance of Schefkowitz. Her team defended home field to win the West and representing the region at the national tournament in Akron, Ohio, before bowing out with a semifinal loss to top-ranked Columbus State. When it was all said and done, the Warriors turned in the winningest season in history with a 50-20 mark. Schefkowitz and her assistants were named the NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Last season, Schefkowitz again led the Warriors to a NCAA Division II West Regional appearance — the program’s third consecutive trip and fifth over all — after winning the program’s first California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship. In 2006, the Warriors appeared in their third Regional appearance and went 2-2 in the tournament with an impressive upset win over San Francisco State to fend off elimination. The team also boasted its second All-American with outfielder Megan Law taking third-team honors, as well as the CCAA Freshman of the Year in Meghan Franksen. Schefkowitz was named Coach of the Year by her peers in the CCAA in 2000, after taking the Warriors to the NCAA Championship with a 44-20 record. She continued the team’s success in 2001 with another 40-win season and the team’s second postseason appearance. After graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in physical education from the State University of New York at Brockport, Schefkowitz obtained her master’s in physical education from San Francisco State while helping to lead the softball team to the AIAW Division III College World Series in 1981 as an assistant coach. She also made a coaching stop at Chicago State University before returning to New York to coach seven years at SUNYCortland, winning three conference championships and earning three coachof-the-year honors. In 1992, Schefkowitz found a home in the small but evergrowing city of Turlock. Schefkowitz was a four-sport varsity letter winner in high school. She also played on the San Jose Rainbows professional softball team.

CCAA Tournament

CHAMPS!

ARCATA (May 3, 2008) — Alyssa Guzman’s three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning finally ended Saturday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championships finale, lifting Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino and the CCAA title. Earning the CCAA’s automatic berth, the 19th ranked Warriors advance into Wednesday’s NCAA Division II West Region Championships with a 30-21 record. In the championships game, neither team could break through against clutch pitching. Cal State Stanislaus’ Jessica Gaumnitz was toughest of tough, pitching the last seven innings and giving up only one hit on her way to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Suffering the loss was Tawni Baker, who pitched five solid innings before allowing a single and walked in the 12th. She was relieved by Cassidy Lee, who had started the game and held the Warriors to one hit in her first four innings of work. Lee struck out the first hitter she faced, Jennifer Arnold, before being stung by Guzman’s decisive blast. Cal State Stanislaus took the lead in the bottom of the second on Casey Stephenson’s leadoff home run. Cal State San Bernardino tied the game in its next at-bats, putting runners on via a single and walk before Priscilla Curiel drove home Debbie Shisler with a single of her own. Gaumnitz, who went 3-0 in the tournament, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Jessica Scholl, Alicia Reid, Meghan Franksen, and Kimiko Wright were all named to the All-Tournament team. The Warriors beat Cal State San Bernardino, 6-1, to open the tournament two days earlier and handled Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-4, on Friday to advance to the title game. Gaumnitz allowed just three earned runs on six hits in 18 innings of work. She struckout 13 batters. Offensively for the Warriors, Wright went 6-for-12, Scholl was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs against CSUMB and Franksen played flawless defense. Alyssa Guzman was 3-for-9 with a pair of home runs during the tournament. The victory is the Warriors’ 17th consecutive win away from Turlock, and they are now 20-5 in road games. It was the team’s first conference championship.

2007 National Championship Tournament

’07 Team lifted program to new heights after magical championship The Warriors’ amazing, magical championship run ended when they spotted the top-ranked teams in the country two runs without a hit in the fourth inning and could not recover as Cal State Stanislaus dropped to No. 1 Columbus State, 7-1, at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Akron, Ohio, on May 19. With the loss, the Warriors end their tremendous run as a final six team in the national tournament. Cal State Stanislaus ended the year 50-20, a new school record, including a West Region championship and finished the year ranked No. 6. The Warriors may not have won the National Championship but what they accomplished in 2007 elevated the program to new heights. “I don’t think anyone on the team was sad (about being eliminated),” head coach Jan Schefkowitz said after the team lost to Columbus State. “We accomplished a lot and we did a lot when we got here. I am so proud of the team. We came to compete and we did that.” The team arrived in Akron full of energy and was poised to show the rest of country what West Coast softball and softball in the competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association was about. After the championship banquet, where centerfielder Megan Law received her second NFCA All-American award, the Warriors seemed eager to take the field at Firestone Stadium. However, they had to wait an entire day before facing Nebraska-Omaha in a night game.

16

Casey Stephenson was the story of the night on May 17 when the junior designated player zoned in and belted two solo home runs against the Mavericks. Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a six-hit shutout as the Warriors took game one, 3-0, over Nebraska-Omaha. Stephenson was later named to the All-Tournament team to cap-off her tremendous postseason. The next night, senior lefty Omaira Estremera pitched the game of her life against a powerful offensive team. She allowed just three hits and struck out five SIU Edwardsville hitters. The Warriors, however, stranded seven runners on base with five in scoring position and dropped the tight-game 1-0 to the eventual champions. Against top-ranked Columbus State, the Warriors uncharacteristically committed four errors and managed just two hits and were eliminated from the tournament after a 7-1 loss. “You can’t make errors at this level and we did and that started a cascade to other errors,” Schefkowitz said after the game. “However I think our players battled as well as they could. Columbus State is a great team and all of the teams here are great teams. You don’t survive when you make errors.” Warriors finished their first National championship appearance 1-2 in three games and was one-hit away from playing in the semifinal game. Now that the program has reached new heights, the Warriors have set their sights on a return trip to the national tournament, this time at the 2008 NCAA Spring Festival in Houston, Texas.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference.

In 2010, Cal Poly Pomona captured the men’s basketball title. CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.

Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

Prersident ’s Message 2010-11 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes. Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking. CSU Stanislaus is the only CSU campus listed among Princeton Review’s “Best 373 Colleges” in the United States. Warrior fans also deserve applause for turning out in increasingly strong numbers. The new 24-acre Student Recreation Complex has helped attract fans to some great home games. Soccer alone had the strongest average attendance among Division II schools last year. Cheered on by loyal fans, the men’s soccer team tied a school record with 11 victories and Victor Regalado became the University’s first All-American in men’s soccer. Three other student-athletes were also declared All-American. Pole vaulter Annie Burlingham made the first-team selection in women’s pole vault. Golfers Brandon Taylor and Trevor Blair earned All-American status as they led the Warriors to another National Championship appearance. Two of our coaches were honored by their peers as they were named CCAA Coach of the Year: John Cook of Men’s Golf and Verek Visaraga of Women’s Tennis. Warrior athletes once again demonstrated that their ability to succeed is not limited to the field. Thirty-one CSU Stanislaus student athletes had GPAs of 3.4 or higher, which is one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. The spotlight on CSU Stanislaus athletics is only getting brighter as the University will host three major championship events this academic year. We will host the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in May, 2011. Two CCAA conference tournaments will be held on campus. The Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships will be held in November, 2010. The CCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in May, 2011. The academic and athletic achievements of CSU Stanislaus’ student athletes are to be commended. I encourage you to show your support for these fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding teams. Go Warriors!

Dr. Milton E. Richards is in his 12th year as the Director of Athletics at California State University Stanislaus. He is guided by the belief that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the overall mission of the university and that a successful intercollegiate athletics and recreation program for men and women contributes substantially to campus life and community interaction. SAAC / CHAMPS Life Skills Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The mission of the California State University Stanislaus Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletics integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administration and fostering a positive student-athlete image. SAAC is also very active in community activities including raising money for the NCAA Division II sponsored Make-A-Wish Foundation annual fund drive. The Warriors led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in fund raising for Make-A-Wish five out of the last six years, including four consecutive years from 2004 to 2008. In 2009-10, the Warriors raised $5,064.92 — nearly $1,400 more than the second place finisher. In 2008, SAAC was involved with a campus community engagement project, Henry’s March, benefiting the Children’s Craniofancial Association. Working with event organizers and coordinated by Associate A.D. Kim Duyst, SAAC helped Henry’s March raised more than $25,000 for the C.A.A. SAAC committee members were also actively involved with workshop through the conference office as well as the CCAA Sportsmanship Workshop. For its efforts in 2007-08, SAAC won the Cal State Stanislaus Outstanding Student Organization Leadership Award. Other regular SAAC community events included building homes with Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, AVID, and working with local school children on academic and athletics skill development.

Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.)

TUTORING AND STUDY HALL

A Special program for first semester freshmen

Academic tutoring is available through the Tutoring Center on campus. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor will also establish a regular study hall program for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Academic Advisor is available to monitor the progress of each student-athlete and to ensure his/her academic success. The Tutoring Center is available on a “drop-in” basis with peer tutors in specific subject areas. Student-athletes can make an appointment with a specific tutor to address a specific academic challenge that they face. Any student-athlete with a learning disability can receive assistance by utilizing the resources available at the CSU Stanislaus Counseling Center and Testing Services. All resources available at the counseling and testing centers are designed to assist all students with learning disabilities and to provide the appropriate tools or techniques to address the disability to assure success at the college level. The Athletic Advisor, departmental academic advisor or team head coach will assist you in utilizing these services in a confidential manner. The Athletics Department Student-Athlete Study Hall Program has been established to assist at-risk studentathletes to utilize appropriate study habits and time management skills to succeed in the classroom.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. SRC & Athletics Facilities The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus, opened in August of 2009, is located on the east side of campus. The SRC features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art allweather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in singleWarrior Stadium game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of & AL Brenda Track NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts. The arena on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus is home to the Warriors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as the Department of Kinesiology. On the first day of basketball practices for the 2010-11 season, new letters were installed on the building, renaming the gym to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. The arena was renamed for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks contributed $500,000 to the University in 2009. As a result, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved, at the recommendation of University President Ham Shirvani, that the campus’ Warrior Arena be renamed the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. In 1999, the gymnasium took on the name Warrior Arena, 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus. Adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center, is a full-size swimming pool. All on the same side of the University, Warrior Athletics facilities also include the Warrior Baseball Field, known as one of the best on-campus baseball facilities in the CCAA, and CSUS Tennis Courts, which is home to the highly-competitive women’s tennis program.

2011 CAL STATE STANISLAUS SOFTBALL

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For nearly fifty years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our three student-athletes coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
