WELCOME Hello, If you feel in need of laughter therapy, I think that we can be of assistance. The Death of Stalin is a deliciously dark satire on the scrabbling for power that followed the demise of the Great Russian Dictator. Impeccably cast and with a characteristically scathing script by Armando Iannucci, this will definitely brighten your day. Rather more innocent, but equally satisfying, is the delightful Lost In Paris in which Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon wreak their idiosyncratic chaos on the French capital with a polish and imagination worthy of Tati or Keaton. Ingrid Goes West finds a young woman stalking a digital media star, highlighting some of the absurdities of modern life, and The Florida Project follows the young residents of a less than deluxe motel exploring their world in a wide-eyed tale reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine. If you are in need of a giggle fix, Paddington 2 explores the further adventures of everyone’s favourite Peruvian.

Gloria Grahame: Femme Fatale Film Noir Icon PG

Sat 11 Nov 11am – 3.30pm (including a lunch break)

Sat 25 Nov 11am – 3.30pm (including lunch break)

The day includes a complete screening of Something’s Gotta Give.

The day includes a complete screening of Nicholas Ray’s In A Lonely Place.

Julie Wright, lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Warwick, provides an insight into the life and career of Jack Nicholson. An actor, director, writer and producer, Jack Nicholson was first given the opportunity to work in Hollywood by Roger Corman in the 1960s before careermaking roles in Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown and his Oscarwinning performance in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Audiences have watched this icon, now 80, age on and off-screen, and Something’s Gotta Give is an especially poignant look at a male Lothario coming to terms with his advancing years.

For a time embodying the notion of the Femme Fatale, the alluring Gloria Grahame (1923–1981) will be forever remembered for her scintillating performances in films like Crossfire (1947) and In a Lonely Place (1949). This talk by Adrian Wootton OBE coincides with a new Grahame biopic starring Annette Bening, adapted from the book Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. Wootton demonstrates Grahame’s brilliance, but also reveals that the controversial personal life of the four-times married screen siren was as tumultuous and complex as the best movie plot.
