Beginning in the real world, but rapidly descending into hell, followed by purgatory before finally reaching a euphoric state in heaven – There is Hope explores ancient ritual, contemporary beliefs, and religious imagery including the Seven Deadly Sins.

“The word poetic is a treacherous one to apply to any artist, but Paterson’s is a poetry of knowledge and mystery, cosmicomically rendered.” The Guardian There is Hope
With FAR, McGregor takes a fascinating creative journey inspired by the controversial Age of Enlightenment and by the 18th century French philosopher Diderot’s very first set of encyclopaedia.

Katie Paterson: In Another Time is the largest, most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work in the UK to date. Works presented at the Mead Gallery include letters of condolence for the death of stars, an archive of darkness from throughout the universe, and light bulbs specially created to simulate moonlight. From transmitting Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to the moon and back, to providing a live phone line to a melting glacier, much of Katie Paterson’s work uses everyday technologies - from doorbells to record players – to make a connection between humanity and vast, intangible natural phenomena. Strangely intimate and inherently romantic, her work provides a poetic examination of the origins of time and space which is both understated and monumental.

The exhibition also includes Nils Norman’s customised Bus Shelter 2015 where advertising spaces publicise impending environmental disasters and propose micro-solutions for living in a flood zone, making your own diesel and combating West Nile Virus. Working with engineering students at the University of Warwick, Norman has also adapted the roof to host a garden: an illustration of how the city’s green spaces might look in the future. Artists’ Plans for Sustainability features Joseph Beuys’ Lemon Light/Capri Battery of 1985 – considered to be one of the artist’s last great works - in which a yellow light bulb is powered by a fresh lemon. In just a few more decades, the world’s population will exceed 9 billion, 70% of which will live in cities. Across the world, artists are proposing innovative and radical alternatives to change behaviours and ensure a more resilient and sustainable way of life.

Domestic Blitz A film resource for KS2 history £15 Warwick Arts Centre created Domestic Blitz from the archives of the GPO and the Crown Film Units with the aim of giving children a real sense of what life was like during WWII – getting to the heart of what citizens had to deal with. The films selected offer an intriguing mix of information and propaganda.
Do It Now (1939) What to do if your locality is attacked.
Britain Can Take It (1940) Made for the American market.
Heart of Britain (1941) Significant footage of the bombing of Coventry.
Dig for Victory (1942) Grow your own vegetables for health and the good of the country. The Domestic Blitz DVD now contains a new section, Blitz and Pieces, a compilation of primary source material running as a documentary of the Blitz in Coventry which can inspire you to make your own film with children no matter where your school is. To order your copy of the Domestic Blitz DVD please email ed.artscentre@warwick.ac.uk
