A highlight this season will be a new co-commission by Chunky Move and Restless Dance Theatre - two Australian dance companies collaborating for the first time to make a new work. The latest exhibition in our gallery is the timely and thought provoking Radical Landscapes, featuring some of the biggest names in modern and contemporary British art, including 2022 Turner Prize nominees Ingrid Pollard and Veronica Ryan, and 2004 winner Jeremy Deller. CBSO returns for an evening rich in melody, lyricism, humour and with just a touch of melancholy. Described as an ‘out-take’ from Adams’ opera Nixon In China, The Chairman Dances features swooping movie-style themes. There’s a searing intensity to the opening of Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, and a delightful spontaneity that will showcase the skills of CBSO clarinettist Oliver Janes. The evening closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, his final completed work and one that many view as his best.

The most technically challenging of his piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 gained in popularity after inclusion in Shine, the 1996 Oscar-winning movie. Praised for his daring originality, celebrated Londonbased pianist Pavel Kolesnikov takes on the challenge. The second half of the concert features Shostakovich’s fifth symphony. His best known, it’s a sweeping emotional rollercoaster penned under the threat of communist suppression.

West Midlands jazz wunderkind Xhosa Cole, presents his first live feature film score, a soundtrack to a masterpiece of New Black Cinema, Sidewalk Stories - American filmmaker/actor Charles Lane’s superb yet rarely seen retelling of Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid Stationary Peaceful Protest is a collaboration between Xhosa and Shiyi Li and was inspired by the Birmingham Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Joined by a talented eight-piece ensemble to rescore Lane’s film, Cole was the winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2018 and Jazz FM’s Breakthrough Act of the Year 2020.
