Broken

Seismic performance in a shifting world Wed 2 - Fri 4 Oct 7.30pm

World Premiere Visually thrilling and full of trickery, Motionhouse’s brand new production erupts onto the stage in its premiere at Warwick Arts Centre. Building on the success of international hit Scattered, which explored the theme of water, Broken examines our precarious relationship with the earth, luring the audience into a world of shifting perspectives. This powerful company merge highly athletic dance within intricate digital imagery and original music in an unashamedly visual and adrenaline fuelled spectacle. Contrasting the caves of our ancient ancestors with modern apartments of glass and steel, the show juxtaposes the mythical underworld where our hopes and fears are amplified with the visceral overworld of light and speed, questioning our ambivalence towards our world. That is, until disaster strikes… Created by Artistic Director Kevin Finnan with set design by long-term collaborator Simon Dormon, projections courtesy of international digital innovators Logela Multimedia and original music created by Sophy Smith and Tim Dickinson.

FRANKO B

LUNDAHL & SEITL

Because of Love Four Stages of Volume 1 Conversation 6pm

Franko B presents his new multi-disciplinary performance. Central to the work is the idea of the sentimentality of memory – the emotional charge and romanticism often applied to our experience of remembering culture. The work represents a departure in Franko’s practice, moving away from the tableaux vivants of his previous work. Here, multiple elements (including live presence, original music, animation and video projection, lighting and scenography) are brought together to weave a loose, non-linear narrative, guiding the audience through a dynamic journey that unfolds over an hour. The centrepiece of the work is a choreographed duet with Franko B and a life-sized animatronic polar bear.

T. Post Show Talk 60mins / Age 18+ Theatre £15.50 (£13.50) Under 26s £9.50 Supported by Arts Council England.

Their last performance in the West Midlands was the critically acclaimed Symphony of a Missing Room at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, at Fierce Festival 2011. This new work involves a collaboration with Sue Fox, a renowned hypnotist. Involves prolonged periods of darkness.

The Secret Agent Tue 8 – Sat 12 Oct 7.45pm

Secret terror cells, political conspiracy, police bungling, state sponsored bomb plots…This is London, 1896. Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s classic novel, The Secret Agent is a heart-breaking but hilarious chronicle of passion, betrayal and terrorism. Set at a time of social upheaval and growing disparity between rich and poor, at the heart of this tale is a woman fighting to protect her young brother from exploitation and violence. In their trademark highly imaginative style, music hall and early cinema collide in theatre O’s return to the stage after 5 years away.

HEADLONG & NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE

1984

by George Orwell In a new adaptation by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan Tue 15 - Sat 19 Oct 7.30pm April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is watching him – and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye. 1984’s ideas have become our ideas, and Orwell’s fiction is often said to be our reality. The definitive book of the 20th century is re-examined in a radical new staging that explores surveillance, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying. This major new production explores the world inside Winston Smith’s head, as well as the world without, and catches the euphoria and bliss buried deep underneath the cold face of Big Brother. In an age of mass surveillance, ‘total’ policing and GPS tracking, 1984 is as relevant now as it ever was. Headlong continues to interrogate our most important cultural texts, following productions of Medea, Faustus, Six Characters In Search Of An Author and King Lear.

FORCED ENTERTAINMENT

Big Hits

Tomorrow’s Parties

Thu 10 & Fri 11 Oct 7.30pm

Tue 22 – Thu 24 Oct 7.45pm

Hello, welcome, you look very nice. We’re Big Hits and we’re on a mission. You’ll learn SELF-IMPROVEMENT here with us tonight and you will COMPLETELY improve yourself. That way you can be better in the world. Are you ready? Because if you’re not you’re running out of TIME. We’re going to blast our hearts RIGHT OUT for you right here for you. How do you feel? Do you feel FREE? This one’s for you.

International innovators Forced Entertainment’s latest performance imagines a multitude of hypothetical futures. Two performers wreathed in coloured lights, like a strange fairground attraction, speculate about what tomorrow might bring.

Big Hits rises up in the space between live art and theatre, relentlessly looking for a good time – and staring hard at censorship, propriety, and the violence that can erupt when noise is stifled. An unruly voice is at large, the music’s turned up high.

Exploring utopian and dystopian visions, science fiction scenarios, political nightmares and absurd fantasies, the audience is carried along on a flowing tide of conjectures, possibilities and dreams.

90mins / Age 16+ Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9

Sometimes collaborative, sometimes competitive, the two performers enjoy the pleasure of invention as their suppositions take them in different directions. Tomorrow’s Parties is Forced Entertainment in intimate and comical mode – a playful, poignant and at times delirious look forward to futures both possible and impossible.

GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN is a 2012/13 Artsadmin Associate Artist.

NOFIT STATE

Noodles Thu 24 – Sat 26 Oct 7.30pm Sat matinee 2.30pm NoFit State is known around the world for ground-breaking productions that challenge preconceptions of contemporary circus, combining live music, dance, stage design, text and film with traditional circus skills. In a sea of irreverent chaos and a world of knots, wires and spaghetti, a surreal cooking show loses the plot as the noodles take over. Aerialists, hand-balancers, contortionists and magicians twist and bend the frontiers of reality in a world that will make you laugh, gasp and drop your jaws in wonder at moments of great beauty and madness. FUEL, ROUNDHOUSE AND KING’S CULTURAL INSTITUTE

Work in Progress

While You Wait

Wed 23 & Thu 24 Oct 7.15pm

Fri 25 Oct & Sat 26 Oct throughout the day

If you put me up against the wall and put a gun to my head, I’d probably admit to being a liberal.

While You Wait is Fuel’s latest series of podcasts, each of which is a different meditation on the idea created by artists in collaboration with academics from King’s College London.

Actually, if you put me up against a wall and put a gun to my head I’d probably admit to being whatever you wanted me to be. And of course, putting a gun to my head is exactly what I’d expect someone like you to do. Confirmation is a show about the gulf between beliefs that we can’t talk across. About our knee-jerk dismissal of the opposing viewpoint. About the echo chamber of agreement and validation we live in. About the way we only choose to see the evidence that proves we’re right. Working with research into the phenomenon of confirmation bias, and a conversation with political extremism, Confirmation is an attempt to have an honourable dialogue, real and imagined, across that gulf. Not to debate the viewpoints, but to find out how we come to believe what we believe, and how, from a common starting point, we can end up so far apart. As with all triggered@warwick events, our Associate Producers China Plate will be on hand to host an artist/audience exchange following the performances. Written and performed by Chris Thorpe. Developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin. 90mins + exchange / Age 14+ Helen Martin Studio £5.50 (£4)

As the landscape presses in on them, they draw upon the threads that connect them to survive.

SADLER’S WELLS PRESENTS JONZI D

SLEEPDOGS

Tue 29 & Wed 30 Oct 7.45pm

Mon 18 Nov 8pm

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D presents a double bill, including his acclaimed solo work The Letter, after its explosive debut last year. In addition, the evening also features a top guest hip-hop artist, and Jonzi presents a new work, continuing his three decades as a pioneering creative voice in hip-hop dance theatre.

A unique, specially staged theatre/music performance in our Butterworth Hall.

Lyrikal Fearta: The Letter The Bullet And & Broken Lineage The Bass Trombone

The Letter explores the responses to Jonzi being offered an MBE. Using choreopoetry he paints a picture of “stunning, rhythmical clarity” (The Stage), looking at this sensitive subject matter through the eyes of an animated cast of characters. The Letter is accompanied by a commissioned score played live by members of the Speakers Corner Quartet Kwake Bass. The evening also features a newly commissioned piece, exploring the broken lineage between the old skool and new skool ‘hip-hop’ generations, bringing Jonzi’s unique perspective to evolving social issues. An exciting collaboration with Ivan Blackstock, of BirdGang Dance Company, it promises to captivate audiences with Jonzi’s trademark wit, humour and style. 70mins / Age 14+ / Contains strong language Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9

There’s an orchestra, trapped in a city during a military coup. Violence erupts, the orchestra becomes separated – lost – trying to find their way home. The composer is left to tell the story. An intricate, fractured narrative with a haunting soundtrack comes together like a mosaic: a whistling bird in the jungle, a gunfight at the airport, a murder in a forest of music stands…pieced together by a lone performer, trying to make sense of the chaos. 1hr 45mins / Age 12+ Butterworth Hall £12 (£10)

Beats

The Paradise Project

by Kieran Hurley

Work in Progress

Thu 5 & Fri 6 Dec 7.45pm

Thu 12 Dec 7.15pm

Beats tells the story of Johnno McCreadie, a teenager living in a small suburban Scottish town at the time of the 1994 Criminal Justice Act – a new piece of legislation which effectively outlawed raves, or ‘public gatherings around amplified music characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats’.

Is it far from here? Is it a place where no one grows old and there’s no disease and everybody is happy?

Beats is a coming-of-age story exploring rebellion, apathy and the irresistible power of gathered youth. With techno. Lots of techno.

Is everything in soft focus?

Following sell-out runs at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre and London’s Bush and Soho Theatres, Kieran Hurley’s play is an astonishing mix of intricate, well-observed storytelling and exhilarating music and visuals. Best New Play at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland 2012 – Winner. The Stage Award for Best Solo Actor 2012 – Nominee. Written and performed by Kieran Hurley, with live DJ (original mix by Johnny Whoop) plus live visuals by Jamie Wardrop.

The World Turned Upside Down Buster Keaton, Sculpture and the Absurd

The World Turned Upside Down is a groundbreaking exhibition which, through the work of over twenty international artists, examines the lasting legacy of Buster Keaton’s unsettling comedy on conceptual art from the 1930s to the present day. Featuring work by artists working in film, photography, sculpture, installation art and performance, The World Turned Upside Down tracks a lineage from Keaton’s melancholic slapstick comedy to the dry wit of much conceptual practice. By revealing the carefully constructed composition and mechanics of his comedy and placing artists’ works in direct relation to three of Keaton’s early films, the exhibition also explores the relationship between sculpture and performance.

The exhibition presents work by artists including Bas Jan Ader, Marcel Broodthaers, Alexandre Da Cunha, Simon Faithfull, Fischli & Weiss, Ceal Floyer, Brian Griffiths, Emma Hart, Jeppe Hein, Sofia Hultén, Tehching Hsieh, Gordon Matta-Clark, Hayley Newman, Miranda Pennell, Ruth Proctor, Roman Signer, William Wegman, Richard Wentworth, Richard Wilson, John Wood and Paul Harrison, Ben Woodeson and Erwin Wurm. The World Turned Upside Down is a Mead Gallery exhibition which has been curated by Ben Roberts and Simon Faithfull and is supported by The Henry Moore Foundation.

Ben Roberts is Public Programme Organiser at Camden Arts Centre and previously worked as a Dean of the Brown Mountain College of the Performing Arts and as director of Tiffin Projects. Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio Wed 9 Oct 7.30pm Tchaikovsky Rachmaninov Tchaikovsky Conductor Piano

Souvenir de Florence Paganini Variations Symphony No.4 Vladimir Fedoseyev Andrei Korobeinikov

The horns blast out a savage fanfare; the trumpets scream in reply – and you know this isn’t going to be any ordinary symphony. It’s Tchaikovsky’s Fourth, the no-holds-barred emotional autobiography in which one of the most inspired composers of all time wrestles with his personal demons in music of startling rawness and power. This is uncensored Tchaikovsky, and if you want to hear what that really means, you need to hear it played by a genuine Russian orchestra. These Russian artists were born to play this music, just as the young pianist Korobeinikov’s performance of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini comes straight out of the tradition of Rachmaninov himself.

Pre-concert Talk Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2 Paul McGrath, Director of Music, University of Warwick, in discussion with pianist Andrei Korobeinikov.

Violin Concerto in C major Symphony No.45 in F sharp minor Symphony No.10 in G minor Violin Concerto in A major ‘Turkish’ Alina Ibragimova

One night in Vienna, Haydn turned to Mozart’s father and told him: “Your son is the greatest composer known to me – alive or dead”. So what better partners for this programme than two of music’s greatest friends? It’s the idea of tonight’s director, violinist Alina Ibragimova. She’s won every award going, including a Classical Brit. Now she switches to the wonderfully authentic sound of a reproduction 18th century violin to play two of the classical era’s most entertaining violin showpieces: Haydn’s sparkling concerto in C major, and Mozart’s zingy, shamelessly tuneful Turkish concerto. Then she becomes first amongst equals, leading these virtuoso players in Mozart’s spirited 10th symphony and Haydn’s delightfully droll Farewell symphony.

Smetana Bruch Strauss Beethoven Conductor Violin

3 Dances from The Bartered Bride Violin Concerto Tales from the Vienna Woods Symphony No.5 Libor Pesek Chloe Hanslip

Beethoven called it “Fate knocking on the door”. For Billy Joel it was simply “one of the biggest hits in history”. But there’s more to Beethoven’s Fifth than just the most famous beginning in all music, and if you’ve never heard it complete you’ve missed out. So here’s your chance, in a concert that begins in the Bohemian meadows of Smetana’s delightful folk-opera, and takes a whirl around Strauss’s Vienna before veteran maestro Pesek launches his orchestra into the four notes that simply everybody knows. Pesek and the CNSO are drenched in the Central European way of music-making, so there’s no more natural team to accompany the wonderful Chloe Hanslip in the most popular violin concerto in the world: Bruch’s First. You know it; you love it... but you’ve never heard it played like this!

Pre-concert Talk Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2 Paul McGrath, Director of Music, University of Warwick, in discussion with violinist Chloe Hanslip.

Delius Walton Delius Elgar Conductor Cello

La Calinda Cello Concerto On hearing the 1st Cuckoo in Spring Enigma Variations Christoph Koenig Jamie Walton

England’s dreaming...and as winter closes in escape from it all with some of British music’s sunniest and most spring-like masterpieces. Delius heard his First Cuckoo in a French garden. William Walton composed his Cello Concerto in Italy, and a warm Mediterranean laps at its very opening bars. But who’s counting when it all sounds so irresistibly English? For the RPO, British music is a living tradition – one that will sound fresher and livelier than ever with conductor Christopher Koenig and the acclaimed cellist Jamie Walton. No piece says ‘England’ quite like Elgar’s Enigma Variations; the musical portrait-gallery that’s become part of our national life.

Pre-concert Talk Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2 Paul McGrath, Director of Music, University of Warwick, in discussion with cellist Jamie Walton.

COULL QUARTET

Colours of Dark Light

with Christopher Redgate, Oboe Wed 20 Nov 7.15pm Britten Phantasy Quartet Op.2 for oboe and string trio Edward Cowie Colours of Dark Light for oboe and string quartet – world premiere Ravel Quartet in F Genius loves company, and when you add a wind instrument to a string ensemble something magical happens. The teenage Benjamin Britten found a completely fresh voice; for Edward Cowie, meanwhile, it’s a way to explore the outer limits of the universe itself in a stunning new work written specially for the Coull Quartet and the “blazing audacity” of oboist-extraordinaire Christopher Redgate. This is music to astonish: but back in turn-of-the-century Paris, Ravel’s String Quartet caused outrage too! You’d never believe it today. Bright, serene and radiantly beautiful, it’s the perfect finish to an evening of music to send the imagination soaring.

Chamber Concerts This year we’re delighted to introduce our new Chamber Music programme – a wonderfully intimate complement to our orchestral and Coull Quartet concerts. Some of the brightest and liveliest ensembles on the current scene play music that ranges from the Baroque era to the British musical renaissance of Elgar and Vaughan Williams and the timeless power of Ludwig van Beethoven. Music doesn’t get any more personal than this – so join us this season, as we share three centuries of ‘the music of friends.’ Helen Martin Studio £12 (£10) Subscribers £9.50

English Piano Trio plays Tchaikovsky Sun 29 Sep 3pm Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky

Melody from ‘Souvenirs d’un Lieu Cher’ for Violin and Piano Op.42 Pezzo Capriccioso for Cello and Piano Op.62 Piano Trio in A minor Op.50

The A minor Trio is Tchaikovsky at his most ambitious, but also his most personal. Grandiose, impassioned, and hauntingly sad, it’s the overwhelming climax to this all-Tchaikovsky programme from the English Piano Trio, and everyone who loves Tchaikovsky should get to know it. First, though, two delicious musical miniatures show how – even when he’s breaking your heart – Tchaikovsky always sends you away humming a tune.

Delmege Quartet English Piano Trio plays Beethoven Sun 13 Oct 3pm

Violins Thomas Aldren and Kirsty Lovie Viola Elizabeth Boyce Cello Hannah Innes

Members of the Royal Academy of Music, the Delmege Quartet was officially formed in London in October 2011 during an impromptu chamber music day in Kirsty’s living room, and has had great success since then. The programme will include Mozart and Haydn.

Wed 6 Nov 7.15pm Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Cello in A major Op.69 Beethoven Piano Trio in D major Op.70 no.1 Ghost Beethoven Piano Trio in B flat major Op.97 Archduke There may be only three players in a piano trio: but this is the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, and it’s anything but small-scale. Beethoven’s Archduke Trio is the trio by which all others are measured: as epic as the Emperor concerto, as tender as the Moonlight Sonata and as dramatic as the Eroica symphony. The so-called Ghost Trio, meanwhile, opens a gateway into a truly otherworldly realm of emotion. The English Piano Trio have been playing this music together for a quarter of a century, so it’s no surprise they’ve chosen to devote an entire concert to some of the greatest music ever penned for a violin, a cello and a piano.

Nicolas Jaar & the Joshua Light Show Sun 6 Oct 8pm New York’s legendary Joshua Light Show is noted for creating the hallucinatory visuals behind the psychedelic mythic rock acts of the late 1960s including The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. Reformed by founder Joshua White with a new team of artists in the 2000s, the lightshow combines classic analog effects—including the “liquid light” for which it is best known—with contemporary digital approaches. This is one of only three performances in the UK in a rare European outing. Joshua Light Show will be accompanied by rising electronica star Nicolas Jaar who fuses minimal techno beats, deep house, off-kilter jazz-funk rhythms into symphonic dreamscapes. His debut album ‘Space Is Only Noise’ has become one of the most successful debuts of recent times garnering praise from the likes of The Guardian (“One feels drawn into a fully formed, self-contained world of his making”) and Dazed & Confused (“Nicolas Jaar has achieved something that few electronic musicians have achieved before - bringing geeky techno fiends, jazz lovers and chav ravers into an unholy union”). Co-presented with Barbican, Fierce Festival, Birmingham and produced in association with Arktype, New York.

Written by folk luminaries, the late Lal & Mike Waterson, Bright Phoebus was released in 1972, attracting little interest and largely shunned by critics at the time. It is now considered one of the definite recordings of the genre, mixing dark poetic ballads of life, death, love and longing with, at times, Sgt. Pepper pop-like sensibility. This project draws together the remaining members of the Waterson family plus special guests, to celebrate the life and work of Lal and Mike through their music. They will perform the album live for the very first time, as well as some of Lal and Mike’s previously unheard and unreleased songs. Butterworth Hall £22.50, £19.50

Sun 20 Oct 7.45pm

Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon is delighted to present his latest stand-up show for 2013. The style is observational, the subject matter is life itself, and the default expression is one of utter disbelief. Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes silly, but always punchy.

The godfather of alternative comedy in his first full-length stand-up show in 17 years following two sold-out London seasons.

Witty, acerbic, magniloquent Frenchman seeks willing, intelligent audience for fun, adventure and maybe something more. Must have own underwear, socks and breath but be prepared to have these charmed off, laughed off and taken away respectively. Studio £11.50 (£9.50)

Robin Ince The Importance of Being Interested Sat 9 Nov 7.45pm Award-winning comedian and science enthusiast Robin Ince follows up his Happiness Through Science show with a look at his favourite scientists – Charles Darwin and Richard Feynman. It is a loving look into the minds of two giants of human imagination who changed our world view. He’ll also stop off on the way to look at some of the more bizarre views of early science – is the ostrich really the offspring of the union of a gnat and a giraffe?* (*No) Age 14+ Studio £12.50 (£10.50)

Chris Ramsey The Most Dangerous Man on Saturday Morning Television Sat 16 Nov 7.30pm After being “sent off” the Soccer AM sofa last year for misbehaving, Chris wonders whether he really is The Most Dangerous Man on Saturday Morning TV – not to mention, whether he wants to be.

Thu 14 Nov 7.30pm

Expect a wealth of comedy anecdotes, misunderstandings and audience banter delivered with likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit from the loveable northern comedian. Butterworth Hall £23

Mark Thomas is well versed in the art of creative mayhem and over the years his troublemaking has changed laws, cost companies millions and annoyed those who most deserved to be. Now he returns to what he does best, mischief – joyously bad behaviour with a purpose. After his award-winning show Bravo Figaro Mark sets himself the task of committing 100 Acts of Minor Dissent in the space of a year. Mark catalogues everything from the smallest and silliest gesture to the grandest confrontations and the results are subversive, hilarious, mainly legal and occasionally inspiring. Theatre £15.50 (£10.50)

Taking his brush with on-air censorship as a jumping off point to muse on life, mistakes, expectation and offense, he examines what happens when you say the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Theatre £17

Roaring Forties

Sun 24 Nov 7.30pm

Tue 26 Nov 7.30pm

Wed 4 Dec 8pm

The Nation’s favourite impressionist, Alistair McGowan, goes back to his stand-up roots for a new two-hour show. Asking the big questions like: would the world be a happier place if Ed Miliband was Prime Minister? What are we really thinking while watching Shakespeare? And is Hilary Devey Jessie J’s mum? Expect to hear everyone from Andy Murray to Colin Murray, riffs on everything from Jeff Stelling to bad spelling and at least one song about butter.

Fresh from a record-breaking season of shows at London’s Soho Theatre and a critically acclaimed total sell-out season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, South African comedian, Trevor Noah is proud to present his critically acclaimed show, The Racist, on a ground-breaking tour of the UK.

A self-confessed ‘miserable old git’ since the age of 23, Ed Byrne is now in his forties. While for others this might result in a crisis that prompts the purchase of a sports car, Ed embraces middle age with open arms. Come join him, as he truly comes of age and gives out his clarion cry: “I am in my Forties. HEAR ME ROAR!”

Illustration by Liam Brazier Freelance illustrator and animator Liam Brazier is probably best known on the printed page for his angular, shape filled, geometric artwork inspired by his own personal popular culture nostalgia loves. His work has been exhibited in the UK, US, and beyond, for both small and large clients and used by the likes of Apple, Samsung and Queens of the Stone Age. Liam’s animations have been seen on the London Underground, and at festivals worldwide. www.liambrazier.com
