HELLO Summertime and the living is, well, a bit changeable, really. So in preparation we have a cluster of feel-good comedies, a memorable musical and some defining, iconic films. There is a playful quartet of French comedies: Fanny Ardant takes up a new hobby in her retirement (and he’s 20 years her junior) in Bright Days Ahead; Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris get reacquainted in New York in Chinese Puzzle; the incomparable Fabrice Luchini is one of a pair of bickering actors in Cycling with Molière and Agnès Jaoui looks for Prince Charming in Under the Rainbow. The musical comes in the shape of Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of Jersey Boys, which features music and the mob in the biopic of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The iconic movie of the Seventies, The Deer Hunter, returns in fine fettle and demands to be seen on the big screen. Richard Linklater’s Boyhood may well prove to be an equally defining film as a deeply perceptive view of growing up through the eyes of a boy from ages 6 to 18, shot over 12 years. In George Stevens’ generational drama Giant, James Dean gives his final and greatest screen performance alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. The issues of fathers and sons are also in evidence in Jon Favreau’s Chef and David Gordon Green’s Joe, boasting Nicolas Cage’s finest performance in a decade. The counterpoint will be found in Angelina Jolie’s exploration of the archetypal witch in Maleficent, which explores the Sleeping Beauty tale from another perspective. So escape the overblown sci-fi, fighting robots and giant lizards with our carefully curated programme this summer.

Mon 7 & Tue 8 Jul Dir: Dylan Goch UK 2014 92mins Cast: Gruff Rhys, Kliph Scurlock, Keith Bear
Based on a true-crime book of the same name, Devil’s Knot deals with the brutal murder of three young boys in Arkansas in 1993. When the police reveal the crime had ‘satanic overtones’, the small community is sent into turmoil.
Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys continues his exploration of the history of Welsh people across the world after 2010’s Separado! with this film about the search for Welsh-speaking Native Americans.
While the local police force begin a witch hunt, and arrest three young men, private investigator Ron Lax (Firth) becomes convinced that there is more to the story than the locals are prepared to admit, and begins digging further into the lives of the families involved in this terrible tragedy.
Rhys’s ‘investigative concert tour’ retraces pioneer John Evans’ 1792 journey to find a lost tribe of Welshspeaking Native Americans. As Rhys travels across the American heartland, he seamlessly blends together interviews, cartoons and songs to create an endearing and engaging film that is part music documentary, part history lesson and part road movie. 03

Jersey Boys
Director Clint Eastwood takes the Broadway and West-End smash-hit musical and adapts it for the screen, elegantly portraying the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. John Lloyd Young reprises the role that won him a Tony award, as Frankie, the young man from Jersey with a distinctive falsetto. The film follows the struggles of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks as their meteoric rise impacts upon their lives in different ways. Featuring all the hit songs from the original musical, under Eastwood’s direction, this flashy fame story becomes engagingly believable.

Angelina Jolie dons the horned headpiece of evil fairy Maleficent in the latest live-action adventure from Disney. This film delves into the backstory of Sleeping Beauty’s infamous villain, and explores Maleficent’s ill-will towards the beautiful princess Aurora (Fanning).
Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate child of an English Royal Navy captain and an African slave, this film features a central star-making performance from Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
A care-free young woman living in a peaceful forest kingdom, Maleficent leads an idyllic life until an invading royal army threatens the harmony of the land. Betrayed by the man she loves, and bent on revenge, Maleficent places a curse upon newborn princess Aurora. But as the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
Set in the late 18th century, Dido is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Watson). Although her birth right affords her certain privileges, her status as a “mulatto” means she can only look in envy whilst her halfcousin Elizabeth looks for a suitor. Belle

Fri 29 Aug & Mon 1 – Thu 4 Sep Dir: David Gordon Green US 2013 117mins Cast: Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter
A film 12 years in the making. In 2002, Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight) cast six year old Ellar Coltrane as Mason. In the intervening years, Linklater regularly filmed the boy, as he grew from child to teenager to young adult.
Nicolas Cage delivers his best, most nuanced performance in recent years in this gritty and moving tale set in rural Mississippi.
Through Mason we see all the milestones of growing up, as his voice breaks, as he gets taller and ganglier, as his heart gets broken for the first time. Starring alongside Coltrane is Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as Mason’s divorced parents and Linklater’s own daughter as Mason’s older sister. “WHAT AN ASTONISHING ACHIEVEMENT; WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE.”

As Joe takes him under his wing, he discovers that Gary lives with his family in an abandoned house under the tyranny of a drunk and abusive father (a stunning performance by Gary Poulter). Joe soon finds himself torn between his fierce protective instincts and his need to avoid the violence of his past. “THERE’S NOT AN UNFELT MOMENT IN CAGE’S PERFORMANCE.
