HELLO Tiaras back in their boxes for another year, we still have plenty of award winners and contenders to enjoy. There are more opportunities to see the favourites but there are others that missed the cut or that the various academies simply made mistakes in omitting. Ava DuVernay’s Selma, for example, should have had nominations for David Oyelowo for his portrayal of Martin Luther King in this stirring account of one of the pivotal points in the American Civil Rights’ struggle. Oscar Isaac is outstanding (like a young Pacino) in J. C. Chalandor’s very moral and mostly peaceable A Most Violent Year. Julianne Moore is measured and subtle in her deeply affecting performance as a linguistics professor afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease in Still Alice. Add to this the wonderful and hilarious catalogue of blights of the modern world in Wild Tales and Xavier Dolan’s candid and compassionate portrait of mother and son relationships in Mommy and you have a broad choice of the highest quality cinematic fare to enjoy. In addition, the British submit their own spectrum of emotion and exploration from the sublime silliness of Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep and Horrible Histories’ Bill (Shakespeare – the early days!) through various adventures of journeys to India for the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Brazil for Steven (Billy Elliot) Daldry’s Trash to a grittier tale of life with an autistic maths genius, X+Y and an exploration of the Meredith Kercher murder in Michael Winterbottom’s The Face of an Angel.
Trash 15 Sun 1 - Thu 5 Mar Dir: Stephen Daldry UK/Brazil 2014 114mins Cast: Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, Rickson Tevez, Gabriel Weinstein Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry once more coaxes remarkable performances from a young cast in this Brazilian-set tale of triumph over adversity.
In addition, 3 classic reissues: 30 years on, Ghostbusters returns, a digital realisation of Bladerunner: The Final Cut and the evergreen Hollywood romantic comedy, The Philadelphia Story grace the big screen once more so that you can see them properly, at last.
Three young boys live and work in the favelas in Rio, sorting through trash on the local rubbish dump. When a wallet is unearthed, the boys are delighted and share the cash between them. But they soon realise there is something far more important in the wallet when a corrupt police inspector turns up, desperate to find it.

A Most Violent Year
Inherent Vice 15 Sun 1 - Tue 3 & Thu 5 Mar Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson US 2014 148mins Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro In 1970, drug-fuelled Los Angeles detective Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello (Phoenix) investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend. Adapted from Thomas Pynchon’s novel by writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master), this American crime-comedy is a wild ride through a landscape of far-out scenarios and brain-melting characters, with a game supporting cast and a typically leftfield performance from Joaquin Phoenix, sporting some seriously hairy chops.

A Most Violent Year 15 Selma 12a Fri 6 - Tue 10 Mar Dir: JC Chandor US 2014 125mins Cast: Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo
Fri 6 - Wed 11 Mar Dir: Ava DuVernay US 2014 128mins Cast: David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo, Oprah Winfrey
The third feature from writer/director JC Chandor (All Is Lost) examines the determined climb up a morally crooked ladder of Colombian-born business owner Abel Morales, where simmering rivalries and unprovoked attacks threaten his heating oil business, family, and his unwavering belief in the righteousness of his own path.
This powerful film tells the gripping true story of the pivotal moment in Martin Luther King Jr’s epic civil rights struggle - the 1965 protest march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama to secure voting rights for African Americans.
A powerful and dramatic study of the American Dream featuring commanding performances from Inside Llewyn Davis’ Oscar Isaac and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain.
British actor David Oyelowo gives a stunning performance as King, whose belief in non-violent protest is met with extreme violence, and whose backroom negotiations with US President Lyndon Johnson (Wilkinson), and others, leave him exasperated. A “SCORCHING, FULL-BODIED, FLAT-OUT GREAT FILM.” The Telegraph 03

Life for 50 year old Alice is fine. She has husband (Baldwin), grown children and is good at her job. But then one day she loses her thread, and is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
First published 50 years after her death in a concentration camp, novelist Irène Némirovsky’s lost story of an unlikely, yet powerful, love set against the backdrop of World War II is adapted for the screen by the director of The Duchess.
Based on Lisa Genova’s novel, Julianne Moore delivers a delicate, award-winning performance, slowly revealing Alice’s gradual erosion of memory and loss of confidence that comes with her cruel decline. Directors Richards Glatzer (himself suffering from a neurodegenerative condition) and Wash Westmoreland tackle a difficult subject with bravery and sensitivity.
