hello

Side Effects 15

Hands up if you have ever been to the cinema and came out thinking, “That was extraordinary – I’m glad I took the risk.” I think this season offers unexpected rewards like that. The headlines will be seized by The Great Gatsby, which will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Pedro Almodóvar’s charming I’m So Excited! and Régis Roinsard’s Populaire, but do take the time to check out these other gems... Last November, we previewed the Taviani Brothers’ Caesar Must Die, where inmates performed Julius Caesar in an Italian prison. At the end of the screening, you could hear a pin drop, so moved was the audience. There is more Shakespeare on offer when Buffy creator Joss Whedon presents his contemporary setting of Much Ado About Nothing in June.

From the States, there’s Steven Soderbergh’s canny thriller Side Effects and the uncomfortable but alarmingly true story, Compliance. Promised Land finds Gus Van Sant articulating the ecological issues about fracking and Richard Linklater’s Bernie goes from small town comedy to something rather more sinister. Michael Winterbottom teams up with Steve Coogan again in The Look of Love, the tale of Paul Raymond and his club and mag empire of the 70’s, and Neil Jordan explores vampire myth in a British seaside town using a visually arresting style in Byzantium. An armchair festival and no mud in sight.

Steven Soderbergh’s (Magic Mike) latest and possibly last film is a brilliant genre-bending tale which explores the dark relationship between mental illness and the pharmaceutical industry. After driving her car into a wall, depressed New Yorker Emily (Mara) is assigned to psychiatrist Dr Banks (Law) who prescribes a new antidepressant, Ablixa. Warned the new drug may have unpleasant side effects, Emily’s behaviour soon takes a shocking turn for the worse. With terrific performances and a storyline that harks back to Hitchcock and film noir, Side Effects may well be Soderbergh’s last but best film.

“A gripping psychological thriller… that cruelly leaves you craving one last fix.”  The Guardian Side Effects

Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist is outstanding for its rounded portrayal of events and philosophies around an inflammatory subject. Riz Ahmed (Four Lions) once again proves himself one of this country’s most promising young actors. There’s also the best in World Cinema with I Wish, from Japan, White Elephant, from Argentina, Something in the Air, from France and, Love is All You Need, A Hijacking and Easy Money from Scandinavia.

Fri 10 – Sun 12 May Dir: Paul Andrew Williams UK 2012 93mins Cast: Gemma Arterton, Christopher Eccleston, Vanessa Redgrave, Terence Stamp

Part documentary, part drama, veteran Italian directors the Taviani Brothers have created a daring and inspiring version of Julius Caesar. Fri 10 – Wed 15 May Dir: Gus Van Sant USA / United Arab Emirates 2012 107mins Cast: Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook

Mon 13 & Tue 14 May Dir: Craig Zobel US 2012 90mins Cast: Ann Dowd, Matt Servitto, Pat Healy, Dreama Walker

Written by and starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski, this is a film that hits right to the heart of small-town America’s current economic crisis. Damon is Steve Butler, a salesman for a natural gas company. Alongside his partner (McDormand), he is sent to a rural town which has been crippled by the economic downturn, with the aim of convincing the residents to sell their land and allow the company to start tapping into the resources that lie beneath. But they soon face opposition from an eco-campaigner (Krasinski) who foresees the issues that lie ahead.

Based on a true story, this disturbing and voyeuristic film has prompted debate amongst the critics and remains a chilling account of our response to authority, and the weakness and susceptibility of human nature. When fast-food restaurant manager Sandra receives a phone call from a ‘policeman’ telling her one of her colleagues has been accused of stealing from a customer, a chain of events is set in motion that finds blame with everyone involved.

“A disturbing, exciting and instructive film about matters we should all be prepared to face.” The Observer

The Mexican Suitcase tbc Wed 15 May Dir: Trisha Ziff Mexico / Spain / US 2012 86mins subtitled The Mexican Suitcase tells the story of three lost boxes containing 4,500 negatives dating from the mid to late 1930s – the work of legendary photojournalists Robert Capa, David “Chim” Seymour and Gerda Taro. Exiled from their respective countries – Hungary, Poland and Germany – the photographers travelled to Spain together to fight fascism with their cameras. Set against an original score by Michael Nyman, their images depict the memories of survivors of the Spanish Civil War and the exile of 500,000 Spaniards to France and Mexico. 07

Elefante blanco

Acclaimed Argentine director Pablo Trapero reteams with his Carancho lead, Ricardo Darín, for this gripping drama about the work of Catholic priests in the slums of Buenos Aires. Darín plays the dedicated Father Julián, who enlists the help of French priest Nicolas (Renier) to protect the inhabitants caught up in the violent drug war which has engulfed the slum. Joining them on their mission to tackle the druglords and the corrupt police, is caring social worker Luciana (Gusman). With Ida’s ditzy generosity clashing with Phillip’s brusque manner, the pair’s initial icy exchanges soon warms into mutual attraction.

I’m So Excited! 15 Los amantes pasajeros

Fri 24 – Thu 30 May Dir: Pedro Almodóvar Spain 2013 90mins subtitled Cast: Javier Cámara, Carlos Areces, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Hugo Silva, Paz Vega Returning to the delirious spirit of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Pedro Almodóvar takes to the skies in this highly bizarre but thoroughly entertaining comedy.

I’m So Excited!

The film looks at the colourful characters aboard a plane bound for Mexico including a trio of camp air stewards, a corrupt businessman, a psychic, a former actress and a Mexican hitman. When a technical failure is discovered in the plane’s undercarriage, the passengers and crew descend into chaos with plenty of sex, drugs, alcohol and song and dance. With echoes of the 1980s spoof flick, Airplane! and his own earlier films, Almodóvar has reassembled his usual cast of game and talented actors for this raunchy and raucous look at sex and death.

“A well-crafted and thoughtful thriller that looks at familiar subject matter from a new angle.” The Independent 10

Fri 31 May – Sun 2 Jun Dir: Tobias Lindholm Denmark 2012 101mins subtitled Cast: Johan Philip Asbæk, Søren Malling, Dar Salim Writer of hit TV drama Borgen and Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, Tobias Lindholm’s solo directorial debut is an intense look at the high-pressure negotiations surrounding a hijacked ship. The action seamlessly transfers from a claustrophobic hull to a plush boardroom as the viewpoint changes from the ship’s on-board cook Mikkel to the CEO of the vessel company. As the CEO tries to negotiate a deal with the pirates, the kidnapped Mikkel and his fellow shipmates begin to lose hope that they’ll ever escape alive. A refreshingly naturalistic look at the subject of hijacking which avoids sensationalism and gratuitous violence.
