HELLO There is a frisson of excitement over the current season of films which brings a welcome injection of fresh new ideas and talents. Steven Knight’s Locke features a bravura performance by Tom Hardy as a man whose world is falling apart around him as he drives down the M1. Minimal in content but huge in impact, this is a career defining moment for both Hardy and Knight. Also look out for Richard Ayoade’s absurdist The Double and Michael Fassbender in Frank, as eccentric a tale of rock’n’roll as you are likely to see. Belle is an arresting costume drama which explores race and rank in the time of Jane Austen, a fascinating counterpoint to 12 Years a Slave. You can also catch Chiwetel Ejiofor again in Half of a Yellow Sun, set in the troubling times of the Nigerian civil war. John Michael McDonagh returns from the success of The Guard with Brendan Gleeson and an impressive roster of Irish talent in Calvary, a tale of contemporary disillusion and how to be good in a hopeless world. You get the sense that the cast were queuing up to participate. Lars von Trier makes a career out of being controversial. Nymphomaniac is his most confrontational film to date; a debate on sexuality and honesty with Charlotte Gainsbourg fearless in the lead role. This is not one for the faint hearted. In contrast, The Lunchbox is a delightful gem of World Cinema, a sort of Brief Encounter in Mumbai which will leave you lighter of heart but hungry of stomach! Ilo Ilo is a rare Singaporean film about a family facing hard times and the strong link that develops between their son and a Fillipino maid. It’s a lot more rewarding than getting frustrated by football and wet weather.

The Grand Budapest Hotel 15 Fri 2 – Mon 5 May Dir: Wes Anderson US/Germany 2014 100mins Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Jude Law, Edward Norton Wes Anderson’s biggest success to date is a multi-faceted tale set in an opulent European hotel. It focuses on the character of the titular hotel’s concierge M. Gustave (Fiennes), known for his charm and his amorous relationships with the guests in his care. Amongst the hotel’s throng of zany residents is ancient patron and object of Gustave’s affections Madame D (a virtually unrecognisable Tilda Swinton). Her sudden demise sets in motion a mad-cap story involving a valuable painting and a fight for an enormous family fortune, all told in Anderson’s typically off-beat style.

Fri 2 – Thu 8 May Dir: John Michael McDonagh Ireland/UK 2013 101mins Cast: Chris O’Dowd, Brendan Gleeson, Dylan Moran, Kelly Reilly

Tue 6 – Thu 8 May Dir: Lukas Moodysson Sweden 2013 102mins subtitled Cast: Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin, Liv LeMoyne

Brendan Gleeson steps in front of the camera once more for The Guard director John Michael McDonagh, in a darkly comic tale of a priest who strives to do what is right in an increasingly corrupt world. While in the confession box, Father James Lavelle (Gleeson) receives a death threat from the other side of the lattice, and is told he has a week left to put his affairs in order.

This delightful Swedish coming-of-age drama centres on three 13 year old girls in 1980s Stockholm. Fed up with their parents and the kids at school who ridicule their tomboyish haircuts, best friends Bobo and Klara decide to start a punk band. Enlisting the help of the talented but quiet Hedvig as their guitarist, the trio embark on their first ever gig.

Although he thinks he may know his would-be killer, Father James continues his rounds of the morally flawed citizens of his parish, attempting to make an impact on their cynical souls before his impending date with death.

Director Lukas Moodysson (Together) evokes the anarchic spirit of the period whilst creating a genuinely funny and recognisable portrait of adolescence filled with embarrassing parents, romantic disasters and never-ending friendships.

Elia Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel is perhaps best known as the film that propelled James Dean to the limelight, and the only James Dean film released during his short lifetime.

John Turturro writes, directs and stars in this wry comedy about a man’s unexpected career move into male prostitution. Turturro is Fioravante, who finds himself, along with his friend Murray (Allen), in financial difficulties when their bookshop closes.

Dean plays Cal, a fiery and passionate young man who’s continuously at war with his brother Aron and with whom he competes for his father, Adam’s affection. Things come to a head when Cal not only falls for his brother’s girlfriend but also finds out the truth about his and Aron’s estranged mother. “STEINBECK HIMSELF PRAISED THE MOVIE VERSION… NEED A BETTER ENDORSEMENT?”  Empire
