HELLO Just when you think you are sure of what comes next, life turns around and confounds you. You think there will never be another film maker like Ken Loach, of such compassion and political acuity, but then along comes Clio Barnard with The Selfish Giant and Kes is reborn for the 21st century. You think that Cate Blanchett has got the Oscar for Best Actress sewn up for Blue Jasmine, and then Sandra Bullock gives an amazing performance in the sci-fi chamber piece Gravity opposite George Clooney. And how could they possibly follow Mamma Mia? Well, Dexter Fletcher’s Sunshine on Leith is a heartfelt tale of romance in Edinburgh based on songs by The Proclaimers. You can’t follow Trainspotting but the dynamic James McAvoy leads a starry cast in a tale of corruption and abuse in Irvine Welsh’s Filth. You think that everything has already been said about the assassination of JFK. 50 years on, Parkland looks at this landmark event through the eyes of the bit players and bystanders, revealing another story altogether.
Filth 18 Fri 1 – Tue 5 Nov Dir: Jon S. Baird UK 2013 97mins Cast: James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots
Mary Poppins is an evergreen family favourite but what about the truth behind the tale? Saving Mr. Banks examines the extraordinary duel between its creator, P L Travers and Walt Disney as she fights to protect her beloved characters from the vulgarization of Hollywood.
It’s been 17 years since Trainspotting, but finally Filth has arrived, another Irvine Welsh adaptation worthy of being discussed in the same breath as Danny Boyle’s breakthrough film. This tale of a corrupt policeman on a downward spiral is a no-holds barred odyssey through Edinburgh’s seedy underbelly, that is replete with Welsh’s trademark satire and scathing wit.
I Wish was the best Japanese film of the year until its director Hirokazu Kore-eda made Like Father, Like Son which is graced by wonderful children’s performances and some deeply moving adults, too.
It features a career-defining performance from James McAvoy, who thoroughly destroys his nice-guy persona with his portrayal of Bruce Robertson – a drug addled, sex-crazed, morally destitute Edinburgh cop who will stop at nothing to gain a promotion to Detective Inspector.
Enjoy the run up to Christmas.
With a cast that includes Shirley Henderson, Jamie Bell and Eddie Marsden, this is a black comedy not for the faint-hearted.

Wed 6 & Thu 7 Nov Dir: Margarethe von Trotta Germany/Luxembourg/France 2012 113mins subtitled Cast: Barbara Sukowa, Axel Milberg, Janet McTeer, Julia Jentsch
45 years after the classic Zeffirelli picture and numerous modern adaptations, experience a return to the traditional telling of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, starring Hailee Steinfield (True Grit) and Douglas Booth (BBC’s Great Expectations) as the doomed young lovers.
An unflinching look at life of political theorist Hannah Ardent, and her report on one of the most controversial trials in history. Ardent was a German-born Jew who fled to New York during World War II, where she became influential in the world of academia, eventually becoming the first female professor at Princeton University. As a writer, she was asked by The New Yorker to cover the trial of the former SS Lieutenant Adolf Eichmann, one of the major facilitators of the Holocaust. Her subsequent reports caused controversy amongst the paper’s readers, as she concluded that Eichmann was an example of the “banality of evil”.
In this classic tale, screenwriter Julian Fellowes remains faithful to the period setting and Shakespeare’s verse, providing the framework for a new classic, which also stars Damian Lewis (TV’s Homeland) and Paul Giamatti (Sideways). Romeo & Juliet

Sat 9 Nov 11am – 3.30pm
Sat 23 Nov 11am – 3.30pm
Coinciding with its emergence as a major economic power, China has become a remarkable producer of cinema, with waves of film-making, first dramatising the nation’s recent past and later probing some of the more difficult areas of contemporary life.
From John Gielgud to Leonardo de Caprio, from Bette Davis to Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare’s lovers have been played on film by an extraordinary range of performers, including animated garden gnomes and live-action Belgian cats. Adaptations, modernisations, parodies and backstage dramas have explored the fascination of Romeo and Juliet since film began. And the play itself has been brought to the screen by some of cinema’s most brilliant, inventive and lyrical directors.
Producer, consultant and programmer David Sin introduces the themes and protagonists of this new golden age with illustrations from their films. There will be a complete screening of Chen’s ground-breaking Farewell My Concubine, not screened in UK cinemas for over a decade.
An intelligent, divorced woman in her late 50s, Gloria (García) is independent but looking for company. Preferring dance clubs to sitting at home in her Santiago flat, one night she meets Rudolfo, a soft-spoken, recent divorcé. As a relationship develops between them, Gloria is confronted with Rudolfo’s dependence on his exwife and children.
University of Warwick English Professor Tony Howard investigates the undying popularity of Romeo and Juliet with a screening of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film adaptation Romeo + Juliet.
A compelling central performance from Paulina García, winner of the Best Actress Award at the Berlin Film Festival, and a well-written storyline makes this a compassionate but never sentimental character study. Gloria is a rare gem, a satisfyingly mature look at middle age. “A GENTLY HUMOROUS MELODRAMA THAT’S REFRESHINGLY GROWNUP.”

Charting the days surrounding the assassination of John F Kennedy, Parkland weaves together the perspectives of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.
In the aftermath of a failed coup in Indonesia in the mid-60s, more than a million people were murdered in a bloody cull.
From the doctors and nurses at the Parkland hospital where both the President and Lee Harvey Oswald were admitted, the FBI agents who had Oswald in their grasp, to Oswald’s brother, Robert, the film presents history as witnessed from the sidelines. An engrossing and deeply personal retelling of an historical event.

A sharp, funny romantic comedy, Enough Said marks one of James Gandolfini’s final appearances. Gandolfini plays Albert, an academic who embarks on an awkward romance with Eva (Louis-Dreyfus), a masseuse who, like Albert, is a single parent to a college-bound daughter. Woody Allen’s latest film features an Oscar-worthy performance from Cate Blanchett as Jasmine, a broke and broken socialite. After the government took away all her fraudulent husband’s assets, Jasmine moves in with her free-spirited and working-class sister Ginger (Hawkins). When she’s not wallowing in self-pity and swallowing anti-depressants, Jasmine constantly criticises Ginger’s choice of men. With echoes of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and the recent Madoff scandal, Blue Jasmine has been hailed by many as one of Allen’s best film in years. “IT IS PURE MOVIE-GOING PLEASURE.”
The Guardian
A classic comedy of manners, this film is an old-school battle between prim and proper British sensibilities and American over-familiarity. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson deliver wonderful performances as Walt Disney and writer P.L. Travers in this account of their relationship during production of the Mary Poppins movie. Protective of her literary creation, Travers travels to America at the request of Disney, who charms her into begrudgingly selling the rights to her book. As production begins to move forward, Travers soon finds herself affronted by the attempts of the American team to “jazz up” her much-loved character, and she begins to dig her heels in as the movie moves beyond her control.
Victor Fleming’s timeless classic is digitally restored and back on the big screen to mark the centenary of Vivien Leigh’s birth. This multi-Oscar-winning romance pairs together the feisty Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Leigh) with the self-made Rhett Butler (Gable) against the chaotic backdrop of the American Civil War. This special one-off screening will include an interval, during which mulled wine and mince pies will be served.
