Helen Mirren plays a supporting but feisty role in State of Play, as Russell Crowe's editor in a superior political thriller which reminded me of Michael Clayton, and Emma Thompson returns to the forefront in Last Chance Harvey, a rom-com for the more mature adult proving that Kate Winslet is not the only British actress who can command the screen. Stephen Frears returns to collaborating with writer Christopher Hampton and Michelle Pfeiffer after Dangerous Liaisons with another French adaptation, Colette's Chéri, set in the sumptuous splendour of fin de siecle Paris.

There are festival programmes from Spain and Latin America and Australia - always surprising and engaging; an astonishing vampire movie from Sweden, Let The Right One In, which defies description; and Paolo Sorrentino's Il Divo, a dazzling work which casts an unblinking eye on recent Italian politics. This has to be one of the richest years for film in a decade. Have fun.

Fri 1 – Thu 7 May & Fri 3 – Sun 5 Jul Dir: Tom Hooper UK 2009 93 mins Cast: Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Colm Meaney, Timothy Spall

The jumble and hustle of modern-day India provides the steamy, energetic backdrop to Danny Boyle’s electrifying film Slumdog Millionaire, which swept the boards at this year’s Oscar and Bafta ceremonies. This is an eloquent and moving account of a boy who attempts to become a millionaire on a television game show, rediscovering the love of his life in the process. Slumdog Millionaire is a cinematic rollercoaster ride, above all a romance, in a world where social, economic and political issues are never far away. With a superb young cast, Boyle’s feel for the heat, sweat and street life of Mumbai transforms Slumdog Millionaire into a compelling and gripping cinematic experience.

Acclaimed actor Michael Sheen (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) continues his startling run bringing public figures to film as the legendary, opinionated football manager Brian Clough, with Timothy Spall as his right hand man, only friend, and crutch Peter Taylor. Set in 1960s and 1970s England, The Damned United tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football, Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie (Colm Meaney), Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Clough.

Slumd og Mill ionaire

No one should be so rash as to declare that ‘the British are coming' but we are enjoying a rather good year in production. Slumdog Millionaire cleaned up at the Oscars and then the talk of the Sundance Festival in January was In The Loop, Armando Ianucci's wickedly funny satire about the start of the Iraq war (or similar). It is a long time since a comedy has made me laugh this much. However, Bill Maher's dry and acute wit that is in evidence in Religulous, his survey of the great religions of the world, did make me smile a lot. He takes a similar approach to Michael Moore but with more subtlety and generosity to his subjects so that no one will be offended but all of us gain some sort of enlightenment!

Italian politics comes under scrutiny in this visually arresting biopic of Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, who was elected to Parliament seven times between 1975 and 1992. From the filmmaker of Consequences of Love, the film examines the power and corruption of the country’s elite, leading to the trial in which Andreotti was accused of collusion with the Mafia.

Britain and America; friends and allies as far back as anyone can remember. Both the US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war but not everyone agrees including US Assistant Secretary for Diplomacy, US Army General (Gandolfini) and a floundering British Minister Simon Foster (Hollander). When Foster accidentally announces on national TV that ‘war is unforeseeable’, the British government is sent into a spiral of chaos and spin propagated by verbosely aggressive Director of Communications, Malcolm Tucker (Capaldi). From Armando Ianucci, the comic-genius behind The Day Today, I’m Alan Partridge and the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It and starring Tom Hollander, James Gandolfini, Peter Capaldi and Steve Coogan, comes a hilarious and biting satire on British-US relations and the lunacy of war.

In the heart of the Selva Laconda, in a Zapatista village in Chiapas, a young indigenous girl is to be married - but when a chance meeting with a rebel fighter throws the marriage plans into disarray, both the village community and the insurgent army are put at risk. Shot on location with a cast of nonprofessional actors.

Set in a near future in which the resources of the world are directed towards the rich, water has been privatised and the poor have become nothing more than virtual workers, Sleep Dealer is an impressive sci-fi film that combines new technology and global politics as three strangers attempt to connect with each other and begin to resist their continued exploitation. As with the very best examples of the genre, Sleep Dealer uses its future world to offer a stark warning about today. Sitting somewhere between Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 this is a real Spanish gem.

Forced to choose between the familiar environment of the boxing ring, and the seemingly “easy” route offered by Vidal, Ángel is torn in two directions and his sense of stability begins to weaken under this external pressure.

During the late seventies, in the midst of the tough social context of Pinochet’s dictatorship, Raúl Peralta, a man in his fifties, is obsessed with the idea of impersonating Tony Manero, John Travolta’s character in Saturday Night Fever. By day mild-mannered and impotent, he unleashes his passion in the local bars by imitating his idol. His urge to reproduce his idol’s likeness drives him to commit a series of violent crimes and thefts. In the meantime, his dancing partners, who are involved in underground activities against the regime, are persecuted by the government’s secret police.

Housing economic and social migrants, the ramshackle community soon developed a unique identity, and out of these humble beginnings of mud and tin shacks grew the El Pozo del Tio Raímundo suburb. This moving documentary presents the barrio's development as a reflection of Spanish society, class war and solidarity, assisted in no small way by the work of the ‘Red Priest': Father Llanos.

Ángel is a twenty-year-old loner and an aspiring boxer with extremely poor career prospects. Vidal makes his living from crime and pressures Ángel to join him in participating in a series of bank robberies.

Der Baader Meinhof Komplex Mon 11 – Wed 13 May Dir: Uli Adel Germany/France/Czech Republic 2008 150mins subtitled Cast: Martina Gedeck, Moritz Bleibtreu With films such as Downfall and The Lives of Others, recent German cinema has been celebrated while confronting dark periods in the country’s history. The Baader Meinhof Complex continues that trend as it deals with the Red Army Faction, the left wing militant group formed by radicalised children of the Nazi generation, who fought an international terrorist campaign opposing American imperialism and the West German establishment throughout the 1970s.

Tue 26 – Thu 28 May Dir: David Hand US 1942 70mins

Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings/ Eastern Promises) stars in an extraordinary change-of-pace role as John Halder, a good, decent individual with family problems: a neurotic wife, two demanding children and a mother suffering from senile dementia.

Set in the luxurious demi-monde of pre First World War Paris, Chéri is the story of the love affair between the beautiful retired courtesan Léa (Pfeiffer) and Chéri (Friend) the son of her old colleague and rival Mme Peloux (Bates).

A German literature professor in the 1930s, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Yet with Halder’s change in fortune, his seemingly inconsequential decisions potentially jeopardise the people in his life with devastating effects.

Léa has educated the spoilt and callow boy in the ways of love, but after six years Mme Peloux has secretly arranged a marriage between Chéri and Edmée, daughter of another rich courtesan. As the inevitable moment of parting approaches, Léa and Chéri try to come to terms with their imminent separation, but the roots of their life of ease and pleasure reach deeper than even they imagine and they begin to understand, too late, how much they mean to one another.

This half-term we bring a true classic to the big screen – the animated story of Bambi, a young deer hailed as the ‘Prince of the Forest’ at his birth. As Bambi grows, he makes friends with the other animals of the forest, learns the skills needed to survive, and even finds love. One day, however, the hunters come and Bambi must learn to be as brave as his father if he is to lead the other deer to safety.

The End of the Line, is the world’s first major feature documentary about the devastating impact overfishing has had and is having on our oceans.

There is a hidden society at the end of the world. One thousand men and women live together in unbelievably close quarters in Antarctica, risking their lives and sanity in search of cutting-edge science. Now, for the first time, an outsider has been admitted. In his first documentary since Grizzly Man, Werner Herzog, accompanied only by his cameraman, travelled to Antarctica, with rare access to the raw beauty and raw humanity of the ultimate Down Under. Encounters at the End of the World, Herzog’s latest 09 meditation on nature, explores this land of fire, ice and corrosive solitude.

Based on the book by former Telegraph journalist Charles Clover and filmed over two years, The End of the Line provides a dramatic exposé of those in power who are taking advantage of the seas with catastrophic consequences on the world’s fish supplies.

Tue 9 – Thu 11 Jun Dir: Kari Skogland UK/Canada 2008 117mins Cast: Ben Kingsley, Jim Sturgess, Rose McGowan, Kevin Segers

Set in 1980s seaside England, this is the story of Edward (Son of Rambow’s Bill Milner), an unusual ten year old boy growing up in an old people's home run by his parents. Increasingly obsessed with ghosts and the afterlife, Edward's is a rather lonely existence until he meets Clarence (Michael Caine), the latest recruit to the home, a retired magician with a liberating streak of anarchy. Is There Anybody There? tells the surprising, touching story of this odd couple - a boy and an old man - facing life together, with Edward learning to live in the moment and Clarence coming to terms with the past.

Inspired by a true story and highly controversial at its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, this is a gritty account of the Irish civil conflict in the 1980s when it was at its most treacherous. 22-year-old Martin McGartland is recruited by the British police to infiltrate and spy on the IRA. Living his life under constant threat of exposure, he continues in the belief that his information saved many lives. He enjoys the buzz of his double life until he is discovered and becomes a ‘dead man walking’, hunted and tortured by those he spied upon. Forced to escape, the real Martin is still on the run to this day.

Audacious in conception and daring in realisation, Steven Soderburgh’s studies of Che Guevara’s campaigns in Cuba and Bolivia provide us with an outstanding anatomy of the politics and process of revolutionary change.

Sounds Like Teen Spirit is a feel-good popumentary, following the style of affectionate documentaries like Spellbound and Red Hot Ballroom. Johnson’s touching film follows the agony and ecstasy of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Unlike so many other child talent contests, there are no pushy parents jostling in the sidelines, just children with real ambition, and sometimes even talent. Open to 10 to 15 year olds, each artist must have written their own song.

Having run away from his daughter’s wedding after finding out she has asked her father-in-law to give her away, missed his plane, then lost his job, Harvey finds kindness in his chance meeting with Kate. Energised by her intelligence and compassion, their relationship blossoms against the backdrop of London, unwittingly transforming their lives.

This witty observational study follows several contestants, amongst them a bullied Cypriot balladeer, an inappropriately “sexy” young Ukrainian girl, and a hopeful girl from povertystricken Georgia who feels the weight of a nation’s hopes on her shoulders.

Thu 25 Jun Dir: Krzysztof Kieslowski Poland 1989 56mins subtitled Cast: Adrianna Biedrzyska, Janusz Gajos, Artur Barcis

Taxi-driver Janusz, his mother, wife and two kids leave a chair free, in the traditional manner, at their Christmas Eve dinner table. At midnight mass, Janusz spots a familiarlooking woman looking at him, and later meets her in the street. Her husband is missing; he must help find him.

Since her mother died in childbirth Anka has always been close to her architect father. But while he is away she finds a letter from her mother that contains a family secret.

Honour the Sabbath Day 15

He reluctantly agrees, and so embarks with the woman - with whom it becomes clear he has had an affair - on a search through the lonely city, its hospitals and railway stations. A film of enormous compassion about the consequences of love, this says more in under an hour about the suffering that results from exclusion, infidelity and the lack of charity than a lifetime of sermons.

Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep It Holy Dir: Maciej Cuske 2008 44mins subtitled

When her father returns, they drink vodka and she challenges him to a game of Truth or Dare... Kieslowski's masterly film addresses the question of incestuous impulses and their roots - and has all the discomforting compulsion of watching open-heart surgery. The two central performances are simply astounding.

Supporting Film

Till It Hurts Dir: Marcin Koszaka Poland 2008 24mins subtitled In Till It Hurts, Polish director and cinematographer Marcin Koszaka returns to the subject of his first documentary, Such a Nice Boy I Gave Birth To, which dealt with his own relationship with his domineering mother. Again he goes right to the emotional edge with his reinterpretation of the fourth commandment – honour your father and mother.

Synecdoche New York tbc

Oscar-winning writer Kaufman both writes and makes his directorial debut with this exploration of the creative mind featuring an all-star cast. Theatre director Caden Cotard (Hoffman) is mounting a new play. Worried about the transience of his life, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty.

Hamle t2

He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a growing mockup of the city outside. However, as the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden's own life veers wildly off the tracks.

Hamlet 2 15

Sat 26 Jun – Thu 2 Jul Dir: Ken Loach UK 2009 117mins Cast: Matthew McNulty, Eric Cantona, Lucy Jo Hudson

Mon 29 Jun – Thu 2 Jul Dir: Andrew Fleming US 2008 92mins Cast: Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, David Arquette

A magical, social realist film about a football fanatic postman whose life is in crisis. He finds a very special life coach in the guise of his hero, Eric Cantona. This film came about through a series of conversations between life-long footie fan Loach, writer Paul Laverty, footballer Eric Cantona and producer Rebecca O'Brien. The project is "inspired by the foot-balling genius of Eric Cantona and his very special relationship with all who love football." Loach, Laverty and O’Brien have previously collaborated on the films Ae Fond Kiss and Sweet Sixteen.

One high school drama teacher is about to make a huge number 2 in this wildly irreverent and completely outrageous comedy from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine. When his school theatre department is threatened to be cut, failed-actor-turned-high-school-drama-teacher Dana Marschz writes a play that he hopes will solve everything: a sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Staging one of the most politically incorrect musical theatre extravaganzas ever seen, Dana and his class will put it all on the line for one controversial, conflicted night of hilarity.
